It is our pleasure to offer you a look into our purebred Red Angus program and have a look at what we are offering for sale. It is our hope that we have ranch horses and cattle that will fit your needs. Here at the BAR U RANCH, it is all about the future and we are focused on making it better for you as well as our family. If you would allow an old movie quote, “the future is the finish line”. So we keep dreaming and scheming to grow and improve the genetics of our horses and cattle. Performance for profit, whether we are talking about horses or cattle, is the objective. We plan to raise the ones that will work for you! We also want to invite you to join us at the ranch in the coming year. Hope you will take advantage of our bed and breakfast, The Stone Horse, located in Cottonwood Falls (stonehorsebedbreakfast.com), join us for a dude ranch cattle drive, come for a trail ride, or just stop in for a visit. Mark the first Saturday in December 2018 on your calendar -- we are planning to have our first field day at the ranch. I’m talking about good food and entertainment to go with looking at our stock. It won’t be a sale this first year, but there will be horses and cattle offered in a silent bidding format. This day will be something of a customer appreciation party at the ranch. Hope you can join us.

Pete

Pete is a great ranch horse with a lot of cow. He is near perfect for sorting and penning cattle and will hold the rope while you doctor. Once he is warmed up he is plenty good and safe for toting grandkids and dudes. If we get him sold we will seriously miss him as he is my “go to” horse, but we need to merchandize him while he is young enough to have a value. Once the best one is not available, the young ones will get more riding.

Safe in Foal to a One Time Pepto / Smart Little Lena stud This is the best most trusted horse on the ranch with no warm up needed. She has packed dudes and grandkids regardless of the weather. What makes her really special is that she is never tired or unwilling. When she has a child to carry, she will get a mouth full of grass and then trot to catch up, no bat or spurs needed. She is so good footed that she never needs shoes. She has gone every day during calving season without a missed step. We don’t even trim her. This mare won a fifth place in the UHCA youth class the first year my son showed. She has a gelding son who is being shown now. Ike is strong and fast. Lee Chapman loves him and has turned down a lot of money for him. This mare has done every job on the ranch and done it well. She is the one I reach for if I have to ride out in a blizzard, pen a bad cow or catch a stray. We are saving her Hurricane filly this year in hopes that she will be as good as her mother. Cherokee has a full sister named Lilly some of you will remember and a brother named Manna Messiah. They were both great horses. Don’t pass this one up.

Safe in Foal to Reno (My Life’s Delight). This little mare is a cutting horse deluxe. She will work a cow with or without you, and if one happens to get by her, she will cow kick it on the way by. She raised a beautiful bay roan gelding we sold in Salina that went to Texas as our high-selling colt for the year. She raised a black filly we sold as a weanling and she has a Reno (My Life’s Delight) coon-tail filly (pictured) we are considering keeping. A special note, there are over $750,000 in NCHA winnings on the back side of this mare’s pedigree.

MY LIFE’S DELIGHT AKA RENO

Reno is the sire of Liberty’s coon tailed filly. He is sired by CD LIGHTS and his dam is SAVANNA HICKORY. His registration number is 5455362. Reno is being shown by Jamie Stover and we are seriously impressed with his first colts. They look sharp and grow fast. Reno is doing well in the show ring. The coon tail is the best colt Liberty has foaled so far. She has a ton of breed character and should be a fantastic cow horse.

Holiday

WHATA SMOKEY CASH

NU CASH COW X WHATA SMOKEY HONEY Cash is our choice of ranch horses. He has some cutting horse ancestors and some great ranch horses on his papers. He won the Haythorn Futurity as a 3-year-old with Adrian Vogel, as well as other ranch horse competitions. He is an early maturing, beautiful Palamino horse with mind and manners. He is almost a complete outcross to our mares, and we are hoping that the hybrid vigor will make these colts big and athletic. The right kind to work in futurities at a young age. He has the look of a champion.

OFFERED FOR SALE

Holiday Cash is sired by WHATA SMOKEY CASH. His mother, Doodlebug, is by BLACK HICKORY MATE and her mother is HOLLYWOOD LILLY. Doodlebug was a great ride, long strided, cowy, fast and loved to jump. She was an easy start and worked well in the “dude string.” Holiday’s sire, Cash, is being shown by Adrian Vogel. He won the Haythorn Futurity when he was young and continues to turn heads in the ranch horse shows. Holiday was the youngest colt born this year and really looked sharp early. He is toting a thick winter coat now, but when he sheds off he is going to break some hearts.

OFFERED FOR SALE

The sisters, Razzy and Razzy 2. This mating, in the words of a good friend of mine, should be a Bad-A cross. The sire, BOONS SMART AE, is a star in Jamie Stover’s barn. I don’t know how much money he has won, but it is impressive as is he. Also known as Herbie, he has an immense presence in the show arena and will make you stop and look when he comes in. The mare, HURRICANE JOSEY, was a smooth ride and a self motivated cow horse with tremendous authority. Cows didn’t out run her or beat her in the sorting pen. Josey’s full sister, HURRICANE SCARLETT, is full-time in Jamie Stover’s riding string and could well be his favorite ride. These mares will be a bit late maturing, but I can’t wait until they do! Jamie is putting the first 30 days on Razzy 1 right now. She is quick footed and smart. I think you best hang on when you show these mares a cow.

Razzy 2

BOONS SMART AE AKA HERBIE

PEPTOBOONSMAL X BITTY LITTLE LENA • REG 5255754

Herbie was our choice of studs to cross on the first Hurricane mare to be bred. He has a money winning pedigree and is a proven performance horse. The color and kind we were looking for to pursue the highly sought after cow/cutting horses. Jamie Stover has trained and shown him with points in working cow horse, heeling, reining, dally heeling, ranch pleasure and performance halter. He has $1,698,071.92 in NCHA winnings on his papers. We are hoping that he gives his colts that same winning style.

Hawken

OFFERED FOR SALE CRR HURRICANE CAT X PEPPYS AIMEE TOO

RANCH HORSES

REFERENCE STUD

HAWKEN is a 2-year-old son of CRR HURRICANE CAT and out of Dad’s old mare, Amy. Amy was the queen of the ranch from age 4 to age 17. Her reputation was that a cow, any cow no matter how wild or rough, could not get away from her. She worked at the ranch so long that she could bring a cow to the barn with almost no assistance from the rider. In her old age of 25, we now use her to pack dudes, but if there is a cow to head, she doesn’t act her age. We sold Hawken’s full sister to Morgan Dixon last fall, and she started very easy. Hawken is built stout and should make a great roping cow horse.

Grace

CRR HURRICANE CAT

CATS RHETT X MORIA’S BLUE MOON CRR HURRICANE CAT has been sold to the TS horse program and we don’t know if we will be able to breed to him at this point. That is why we will only be selling the two fillies by him if the money is big enough to make a payment on our investment capitol. I’ve said it before and I’ll say again. Hurricane colts suit us all the way. They travel smooth, they cow without being silly, and they like to pull from the horn. I heard a friend of mine who trains horses for a living say that he likes the Hurricanes because the public can get along with them. If you get a chance to own one whether it is out of one of our mares or someone else’s, don’t hesitate.

Gracie has a colt that I want to tell you about. She may be the best performance prospect born in 2017. She is for sale, but remember that she is my favorite and one I’d like to ride into the brood mare band. She is beautifully built and out of my favorite stud, CRR HURRICANE CAT. Of course most of you already know Gracie, one of the best mares at the ranch.

EXPERIENCE THE BAR U

This year will mark the 8th year of our bred heifer development program. We have been buying heifers from my Dad and occasionally from other reputable cow herds to grow, breed and sell. These cattle sell at the top end of the Fall Select Female Sale hosted by Superior Auctions in late November. We use these heifers in our dude ranch operation driving them as many as five times in customer cattle drives. We also teach cattle handling skills with them. As a result they are very docile and easy to handle. The only dry lot they see is during the first week of weaning each year. Last year was the first year we bred them all to Pieper Red Angus bulls, and they sold very well. We are headed red, but will have black and black-white-face heifers until Dad’s cows all turn red. He is still holding on to a couple Hereford bulls and black cows.

TRAIL RIDES

Join us for the Flint Hills Cowgirl Cattle Drive to experience the vast, rolling Flint Hills landscape. The tallgrass prairie of eastern Kansas sure is a beautiful sight to see horseback. Contact us for information about our rides held several times throughout the year.

This is the bull that started us with Pieper genetics. Dad bought this bull sight unseen on the phone after a good friend recommended we look at the Pieper cattle. His calves have rocked the Bar U with superior weaning weights and look. We are anxious to have his heifers in production to see if they perform as good as they look. You can recognize his calves at the chute by their thick tops and the way they track wide as they leave. It was three of his sons that we bred our heifers to last summer. Two of those bulls went back to the commercial black cows to breed for 2019 calves.

I will not soon forget the excitement as Teresa and I watched this bull top the 2016 Pieper sale. I don’t know why we didn’t sample him the first year, but we are on the bandwagon now. This bull is complete in every way. Great look, great numbers great pedigree. He is the son of PIE Cowboy 343 and by a HXC Conquest daughter. We used him on our top heifer BARU Tilly 641 and we flushed her mother, PIE Tilly 2155, to him. You better believe we are looking forward to these calves! I saw him in Nebraska, and he has not lost that sale-topping look with age.

BARU Tilly 641 is without a doubt the most exciting heifer that has ever been born at the ranch of any color. She has the look of a show heifer with the numbers of a donor cow. She is ultrasound safe-in-calf to PIE Just Right 540. In addition, we are collecting eggs via IVF and have frozen embryos available sired by PIE Just Right 540. There is a lot of discussion at the ranch about whether we should let this quality of heifer leave. The need for investment capitol makes it possible for you to have an opportunity to own her. Believe me, she has taken the eye of everyone who has seen her.

884 has the best looking bull calf at the ranch. He is sired by C-BAR EL GRANDE. We purchased this cow in the spring sale at Piepers with the intent to make her a donor cow, and it looks like she is a good one that will influence the genetics of our future. We will be IVF flushing this cow and will offer embryos for sale. If you are interested in embryos by this great cow, we will consider using the bull of your choice.

BARU RUBY 643 is another really exciting heifer. Her mother, PIE RED RUBY 4094, is the first cow we purchased from Pieper Red Angus. She is the mother of PIE GET ER DONE and a favorite of Mark’s. She is bred to PIE JUST RIGHT 540. She is very maternal. There is often discussion at the ranch whether she or Tilly will make the best cow. We would sell her by private treaty reserving an IVF flush. I’m quite sure she will be one of the cows that influence our future. PIE RED RUBY 4094 has a PIE THE COWBOY KIND 343 heifer at side that looks great. We truly feel blessed to have this cow family.
