thebaruranch.com WELCOME TO THE 1ST ANNUAL BAR U LOOK BOOK
Even though the Bar U has been in our family since 1933, we are new in several business ventures, including raising AQHA RANCHING HERITAGE COLTS. With the help of our good friend and photographer, Kristy Jewell, and her daughter Lacy, we have attempted to produce an introduction to our ranch as well as a sale catalog of this year’s colt offering that will be offered at auction at the October 9, 2016 Farmers and Ranchers colt sale in Salina, Kan. Teresa and I love raising colts and are doing our best to produce the kind of colts that will work for you. This is the best set of colts top to bottom that we have ever produced. (Teresa says I say that every year, but this year it’s true!) Our ranch-bred mares are all generated from a double bred Hollywood Gold mare I bought in the 1960s. We’ve added three mare lines since 2005. They have NCHA money winning pedigrees and carry the blood of Little Acre Doc, Smart Mate, and Docs Hickory. We rode every one of them at the ranch and liked them before we started breeding them. We have some colts out that are winning in cowboy dressage, extreme cowboy racing, and ranch horse competitions and that really encourages us. Since we have a small number of mares and because we want to breed to a variety of studs, we don’t own a stallion. Spencer Harshman’s stud CRR Hurricane Cat is our main “go to” horse because his colts are really working for us.
BAR U RED ANGUS We are starting a Red Angus cow herd. Teresa and I
purchased four registered Red Angus cows this year from
Pieper Red Angus, Hay Springs, NE. They will start calving after August 20th and we can’t wait to see those calves! Our goal is to produce bulls for our bred heifer program in the beginning and later develop a customer base for those great red bulls that have fantastic numbers and a “look at me” phenotype. The popularity of Red Angus females, coupled with how well they are producing on Dad’s ranch has us pretty excited about the Red Angus cattle.
BAR U REPLACEMENT FEMALES
This will be the 7th year Teresa and I have purchased open heifers from Dad’s ranch and other reputation breeders. This year we have 9 heifers purchased from Peiper Red Angus and 25 blacks from Lindsey Smidt. These heifers are handled a LOT. We use them in our guest ranch business teaching folks cattle handling skills and they are the main bunch used in no less than 5 cattle drives throughout the year. This year looked like it was going to be a challenging year to show a profit so we pulled out all the stops, synchronizing, AI breeding and freeze branding permanent ID numbers on them. We will be offering just under 90 head in November, probably on Superior Auctions.
BAR U DUDE RANCHING
Guest ranching is another of our ventures. Authenticity is not much of a problem for us. Frilly and fancy is a bit difficult, but we do our best to accommodate guests with real live ranch experiences. When our guests need a horse we put them on one they will want to take home, (tho that horse will probably not be for sale). Many of our mares worked for our guests before they started having colts and some of them have to go back to work when they miss having a colt
or after this year’s colt is weaned. Couples, small groups, and individuals wanting horsemanship instruction and trail rides make up our clientele. Folks with a lot of experience and some that have never ridden come ride with us. There are some annual events, but folks may call and invent their favorite adventure at the ranch. Dad often comments to our guests that ranching is about fixing fence, painting fence and cleaning pens, but we just smile and ride off.
STONEHORSE BED & BREAKFAST
In 2014 we got a chance to lease a house close to the ranch. Since we didn’t want to sell our big beautiful house in Cottonwood Falls, we started a bed and breakfast. The Stonehorse Bed and Breakfast house is a five bedroom, two bathroom stone and brick house on a quiet street. It is really spacious and works well for family reunions, cattle drive customers, and we even had a yoga retreat there this year! It is only 25 minutes from the ranch so it works well for folks who are visiting. The 10 miles of Diamond Creek gravel has plenty of corners to keep you awake after a long cattle drive. Teresa is my favorite cook and she does some amazing breakfast casseroles and pastries. We test them on Wednesday morning cowboy Bible studies, so you know they are good! The food is ready in the refrigerator so that our guests may enjoy their breakfast when ever they want to get up unless we are driving cattle and the boss says to be at the ranch early. As you can see we are all about service. Producing a great product is what we really like to do whether it is a colt, a calf
or a good time at the ranch. Hope you will be our next customer!
I trust this horse to produce colts we can count on more every year. When folks ask about a particular colt, the most common comment is, “He rides like a Hurricane.” I want to explain what that means. First, it means that the colt has a better attitude than the mare, or at least as good. It means that the colt was easier to start than its mother. It means that they are smooth in every gait with a purposeful walk, a smooth as glass trot, and an easy to ride slow lope that will make you drool. It means that the colt is as cowy as the mare and a little more. The one’s I’ve ridden like to pull from the horn. I expect those who rope will love them. In addition, you may expect these horses to have good bone and be big and stout enough to do the job. They are tall enough for most and stout enough for everyone. I have no intention of ever letting him off the ranch. I made my nephew, Spencer promise to let me have the first shot at him if he ever decides to sell The Hurricane. I suspect that there will be a lot of people who will want a horse that “Rides like a Hurricane.” Hurricane has $1,957,338.86 in NCHA Dollars on his pedigree and has $336,911.83 on his colts’ papers. He won $1,191.39 himself.

Cash is our choice of ranch horses. He has some cutting horse ancestors and some great ranch horses on his papers. He won the Haythorn Futurity as a 3-year-old with Adrian Vogel, as well as other ranch horse competitions. He is an early maturing, beautiful Palamino horse with mind and manners. He is almost a complete outcross to our mares, and we are hoping that the hybrid vigor will make these colts big and athletic. The right kind to work in futurities at a young age. He has the look of a champion, and his first colt on the Bar U (“Tyke”) has it too.

Herbie was our choice of studs to cross on the first Hurricane mare to be bred. He has a money winning pedigree and is a proven performance horse. The color and kind we were looking for to pursue the highly sought after cow/cutting horses. Jamie Stover has trained and shown him with points in working cow horse, heeling, reining, dally heeling, ranch pleasure and performance halter. He has $1,698,071.92 in NCHA winnings. We are hoping that he gives his colts that same winning style, and his first colt, “Jazzy fits the bill.

If you like big, stout, good headed colts, take a good look at Tyke. His mother, Hollywood San Doll (aka Sandy) is a proven producer out of the popular mare Lilly who is now owned by Mark and Melinda Decarlo. Her first colt Oso is owned by David Vought. David paid a lot of money for him because we didn’t want to sell him. Linda and Gregg Schultz own Shesaosalenacat (aka Cherokee), and they won the EXCA Colt Challenge with her in 2015. Trish and Mark Hickey own Bella, Sandy’s yearling, and she is big and pretty. They plan to show her in the buckskin association. So why breed her to Tom Jenssen’s “Whata Smokey Cash” ? Because he is a great young stud. Adrian won the Haythorn Futurity with him and we wanted to try him. Giving him one of our best mares was to give him a good chance. From the looks of Tyke we think it was a good decision.

Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Ranch Horse Sale in Salina, KS
This colt has a presence. She captures my imagination. She has the look and move of a champion. We rode Tess more and won more with her than any other. Tess is the best mare on the ranch and now we will see what her colts will do. It was a difficult decision to stop riding Tess and let her raise colts. Believe me, if she doesn’t breed back she will be back under saddle...as soon as Teresa can catch her.

Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Ranch Horse Sale in Salina, KS
This colt is a shaped up roan dun. He has had two full brothers before him. Doodlebug’s first colt was a beautiful blue roan that we lost at weaning time to a broken leg. Last year’s colt was our high seller, purchased by Eric Bohl. We are anxiously waiting to see if he rides as good as he looks. They seem to be great minded like both the stud and mare. Doodlebug was a great ride. She was long strided and cowy. She also made the dude string at a young age. We started her raising colts earlier because I decided that I wanted to ride her colts. With Black Hickory Mate as her sire and Hurricane as the sire of her colts, there is a lot of potential for her offspring. We called him chrome, because of how easy to look at he is.

PEPTOBOONSMAL BOONS SMART AE BITTY LITTLE LENA CRR HURRICANE CAT HURRICANE JOSEY DOCS HEART BRACRE SHE SELLS OCTOBER 9
Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Ranch Horse Sale in Salina, KS
Here is the next big thing. This is the first colt out of a Hurricane mare. Her mother, Hurricane Josey, was a great cow horse and we showed her a couple times. She was just about ready to come into her own where we could see if she had what it takes to win when we had an opportunity to breed her to a proven, money winning Peptoboonsmal stud (Boons Smart Ae shown by Jamie Stover). We decided to forfeit Josey’s show career to take a leap forward in our breeding program. This colt is cute! She is a bit small, but her mother was too and she made a 14.2 hand, 1200-lb mare that had some authority when we had big cows on the end of the rope.

Grover has a fan club already. He has been on Facebook since birth and people ask about him when they call. Another Hurricane x Heart Bracre and maybe the best looking one at this age. He has a really laid back attitude and a good look. This will be the first one from this cross that will be started outside the ranch. If you are looking for a good prospect, this one is one you should consider.

Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Ranch Horse Sale in Salina, KS
This little mare has the attitude of a cow horse. She is little and quick and will have the authority to skin a cow and put her where she wants. Her mother (Little Smart Liberty) loved people and hated cows. If a cow got by her she would cow kick her on the way by. With the total number of famous cutting horses on her pedigree, how could she be anything else? Belle is a cutting prospect. If you are looking for a cutting horse, look close at this one.

CATS RHETT CRR HURRICANE CAT MORIAS BLUE BOON PEPONITA PINE PEPPYS AIMEE TOO PRECIOUS AIMEE HE SELLS PRIVATELY
At the Bar U Ranch in Burdick, KS
Peppys Aimee Too is my Dad’s last ride. She is special in a sometimes OMG way and famous around our circle of cowboys. Dad rode her from her 4 year old year to her 20th year. She could handle a cow like no other, but she was not always nice to ride. After I brought her home, Mom called me stating that there was a mare and colt in the yard. Aimee is a world champion gate opener. There are too many Aimee stories to tell in one page. Aimee was in a class by herself. A cow couldn’t get away from her, and she instinctively knew where the cow needed to go. If that cow had to go to the barn and you were brave enough to turn Aimee loose, the cow went to the barn. It could be a ROUGH ride. Now Hawkin is sired by CRR Hurricane Cat so what I think is going to happen is that he will have Hurricane’s easygoingness and Aimee’s ability with a cow. He will not be eligible for the ranching heritage program unless someone makes an exception and he will not be in the Salina sale as we got him too late to enter, but we will be offering him for sale private treaty this fall. We also got a yearling filly that is a full sister. She will be going into our riding/showing program. Aimee is a grand daughter of Peponita raised by Charley Trayer (hanging tree cowdogs). We are very excited to bring her into the Bar U Ranch mare program!

SORREL • 2-YR-OLD GELDING HE SELLS PRIVATELY
At the Bar U Ranch in Burdick, KS
Reiny is a well build balanced colt that should be a great one. He has a blemish on his left front foot that makes him hard to guarantee so we bought him at the Salina sale last year from ourself so that he will be eligible for the Farmers and Ranchers Futurity. Adrian Vogel is planning to start him this fall and we might partner up on him if he likes him. I’m really figuring that we are going to own him for a long time. He is a full sister to Hurricane Josey and Scarlett, and I believe in these genetics. As long as we can breed Heart Bracre to CRR Hurricane Cat we will. I predict that there will be a long line of good horses from this cross.

BAY ROAN • 3-YR-OLD FILLY SHE SELLS PRIVATELY
At the Bar U Ranch in Burdick, KS
She is a beautiful, good minded cowhorse that just might be the best all around cow horse I’ve ever started. We rode her mother and full sister and they were great, but she just might be better. Our hope is to get her ready to make a bid for the Ranching Heritage Finals, showing her in 2016 as a 4-year-old. Our plan is to get Jamie Stover to help with the training. If she won’t show, I know she will make a fantastic ranch horse and we will be showing her in the Midwest Ranch Horse Association next summer.
Tallgrass Joker
My good friend Gordon Schieman wanted to own and ride one of our horses. He and I selected the colt that best suited his needs - Tallgrass Joker. His purchase is financed over the time need to delivered the colt broke and riding as a 4 and a half year old. Gordon comes to the ranch periodically to see him and I update him with Tallgrass reports.
BAR U CUSTOMER RELATIONS
Because we really think it is important for horses to grow in an environment that includes rocks, trees, creeks, mares and colts to play with, we offer our customers options to leave them at the ranch. We believe it is best for folks to leave their colts at the Bar U until they are ready to ride. We will halter break them and have them packing a saddle. We are happy to work with you to create the best start for horse and rider.
