Comedian’s Guide to Survival a funny, realistic look at how to make it as a stand-up comedian

hoever said “dying is easy, comedy is hard” certainly had a point. Trying to be a successful stand-up comedian is an exercise in perseverance. If one becomes a successful stand-up comic, it can be quite rewarding both artistically and financially. However, the road to reaching that comedy pinnacle is indeed a long, difficult one. There are those who have to juggle a day job with trying to fulfill those stand-up aspirations. There’s plenty of long, lonely travel on the road from one club gig to another. Most times, the performance venue is not always the most ideal one. The audience – sometimes in small numbers – can be unresponsive to your material or even worse, outright hostile. And the pay is very little or next to nothing. There are plenty of those horror stories that have been told or written about by generations of comics, professional or amateur, successful or not.Veteran British comic (and current New Brunswick resident) James Mullinger has had his share of similar ups and downs on his journey to pursuing his dream of being a successful comedian in his native England. But this time, he offers his story not as an oral or written narrative, but as a more illustrative version in the form of an autobiographical feature film called “The Comedian’s Guide to Survival”. Filmed last year in England and at the Just For Laughs festival, “The Comedian’s Guide to Survival” was previewed last month at this year’s edition of Just For Laughs before its official premiere in the UK this October. It tells the story of Mullinger (played by popular British actor James Buckley), as he struggles to make it as a professional stand-up comic in Britain, while working as a magazine journalist as he spends every waking hour • August 20, 2016

during his nights and weekends travelling across the country performing in club and pub gigs, withstanding every form of public humiliation and at times, sleeping in empty train stations overnight when he misses that final train back home to face another day at the office. Nick Secker, James’ editor-in chief boss at the magazine (played with hilarious, spittle-spraying snarkiness and nastiness by Kevin Eldor) is determined to have him focus on his journalistic duties and forget his comedy ambitions, by hanging over James’ head the threat of termination if he ever finds out that he performed another comedy club gig again. However, strange enough, he decides to put James in charge of the magazine’s upcoming special issue on comedy. He is sent to Montreal and L.A. to interview a series of comics for the publication (and includes “interviews” with such comics as Omid Djalili, Gilbert Gottfried, Brendon Burns, Gina Yashere and Mike Ward, who make cameo appearances throughout the movie). If Secker’s intention was to have James stick to his job and forget about being a stand-up comic, this assignment has a boomerang effect, and only serves to strengthen James’ ambition to take up the mic even further, no matter what the consequences may be. “The Comedian’s Guide to Survival” is a movie that gives a genuine, gritty look at how tough it can really be to carve out a career as a stand-up comic, and all the sacrifices and obstacles that go with it. James Buckley fits into the role of James Mullinger so easily, and convinces the audience that he is James Mullinger the struggling comic

(Mullinger himself makes a cameo appearance, as narcissistic veteran comic Brad Macey, who offers the aspiring young comedian some valuable career advice). And there’s plenty of laughs interspersed with the drama and dilemmas that young James faces on his career path, with Buckley performing stand-up sets with material that Mullinger actually used throughout his own career (which adds to the film’s sense of authenticity). Thanks to a finely crafted screenplay by Mullinger and director Mark Murphy, and a strong cast, “The Comedian’s Guide to Survival” should be essential viewing for anyone who is interested in the world of stand-up comedy, or those brave souls who want to pursue a career in it. Many veteran comics will certainly identify with many of the situations that are portrayed in this movie; however, many aspiring stand-ups should take it as a realistic lesson about what they are about to face as they head out on the road to living their own dreams as a successful stand-up comedian.

COVER STORY Sebastien Bourgault, French Canadian Comedian is laughing his way to LA

eing a comedian isn’t always easy, especially when you’re cracking jokes in a new language. It takes a lot of work, and includes a few crickets along the way. However, French Canadian comedian, Sebastien Bourgault, leaves English comedy clubs chuckling. He fills rooms with laughter from his fresh jokes and inspiring story. Sebastien’s lifelong dream is to live and perform in Los Angeles. The biggest challenge that stood in his way: he was almost forty, and couldn’t speak English. See online for more: www.mtltimes.ca

race yourselves…there is a new villain in town, and he goes by the name of Alain Chanoine. Sharing the screen with Cara Delevingne, Will Smith and Margot Robbie, our very own Montreal-born actor plays the demon “Incubus”, in this summer’s most anticipated movie, Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad is about a U.S. intelligence officer who decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated anti-heroes to fight a demon who is trying to take over the world, which inevitably ends in chaos. arrived on site just in time for the skies to open up and try to extinguish the barbecue flames of Ribfest 2016 in a futile attempt. Some made a mad dash for their vehicles while others headed for the cover of the tents.A couple of stubborn folk, perhaps too hungry to care, refused to give up their spots in line and were drenched through to their skins. How she goes, I suppose. Like a river, the rain water came cascading down around our feet, coffee colored from all the gravel on the festival grounds and relentless. And as fast as it had come, it had gone, and the lines filled up again as the feast carried on. See online for more: www.mtltimes.ca August 20, 2016 •

Just For Laughs 2016 - 23 shows in 21 days and what I saw (and laughed at)

O

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

n the evening of Saturday, July 30, around 11 p.m., Sarah Silverman concluded her solo show in front of a large crowd at the Maison Symphonique. It was the second Just For Laughs show of the night for me (I caught the Mega Stars of Comedy gala earlier that evening at Place des Arts), and the 23rd for me during the whirlwind three weeks that was the 34th edition of the worldrenowned comedy fest. After spending about 90 minutes at the Hyatt Hotel bar doing a final round of schmoozing, I wrapped up my 30th year at the festival. Although a previous commitment in Milwaukee didn’t give me the opportunity to catch Carrie Fisher’s festival debut as a gala host and P.K. Subban’s official farewell to Montreal as host of his own all-star gala, I got to enjoy a well-rounded comedy experience at Just For Laughs hopping from one show to another, and trying to catch as many of the best names in comedy ply their trade to consistently packed houses. Here are some of my favorite highlights from Just For Laughs 2016. *** Biggest Surprise of the Festival: Comedian Kevin Hart, who agreed to accept all 10 proposed TV comedy projects that were vying to be part of his new comedy streaming network at his Laugh Out Loud Network Pitch Panel, which attracted over 300 people to the Hyatt’s Grand Salon Opera. The line-up of proposed projects was a very strong one, and it must have been difficult for Hart to choose just one or two, so as a firm believer in developing up and coming comedy talent, he decided to accept

tival: Quebecois comedian Mike Ward. Just as he was about to embark upon his second year as Nasty Show host, this controversial comic found out he lost a case with the Quebec Human Rights Commission, who ordered him to pay a total of $42,000 to the family of a disabled boy that was a target of one of his jokes. Although Ward took the decision with a great deal of class and humour, his fellow Nasty Show comics quickly rallied by his side, and Just For Laughs decided at the last minute to hold a “Free Mike Ward” bilingual benefit show on July 30 at the Metropolis to help pay his legal fees for the appeal that he will be launching. The show, Kevin Hart surprised the festival with accepting all 10 propsed TV comedy projects which quickly sold out, inall 10 projects. in which the online voting JFL time warp, two of the cluded Jeff Ross, Jimmy One of them was “The process is underway until comedians that I saw durand Brad Williams Review”, which was Aug. 23, and the comedi- ing that first year in 1986 Carr on the line-up. pitched by Montreal ans with the most num- – Louie Anderson and ** comic Abdul Butt. Battle shows, which were introduced at last year’s festival. Tickets for this year’s Roast Battle shows at the L’Astral quickly sold out and became one of the hottest tickets at JFL this year (next to the Midnight Surprise shows that were hosted by Piff the Magic Dragon). And to make this raunchy insult fest even more interesting, an impressive roster of celebrities such as Judd Apatow, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Rogen, David Spade and Whoopi Goldberg served as judges for this four night spectacular. Luckily, Comedy Network aired these Roast Battle shows every morning live to tape, so I got to see what all that roasting excitement was all about. *** Discoveries of the Festival: British comic Nish Kumar, whose routine about board games was one of the highlights of the David Cross gala; and Piff the Magic Dragon, who proved that comedy and magic (not to mention dragon costumes) can work when it’s done by the right dragon costume-wearing individual. How to sell a house that didn't sell

ontreal - If your home has just come off the market and hasn't sold, don't be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn't Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period.

Don't risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Before you hire a realtor, know the right questions to ask to save you time and money. The many lives of the Montreal World Film Festival

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

s the saying goes "cats have nine lives," but regarding the number of lives and being "hard to die," the Montreal World Film Festival may well surpass our feline friends. Since the first (failed) attempt in 2005 by federal and provincial bureaucrats to mount a parallel event, to the recent years when one by one government agencies have been withdrawing their support, some journalists have been writing the obituary for the festival which in a few days will be holding its 40th edition. The latest journalistic piece trying to dismiss the festival ("an embarrassment to the city" he called it) was written by Gazette columnist Brendan Kelly this past August 15. A vitriolic attack on Serge Losique, founder and president of the WFF, whom he called on to "shut down the Festival des Films du Monde." However, things are somehow more complicated than what Kelly was portraying: Has the WFF

been in a decline in the last few years? Yes. Have there been embarrassing financial problems? That's also true. But the columnist fails to mention some of the root causes of the WFF's troubles. Financial support from Telefilm Canada (federal) and SODEC (the provincial agency that funds cultural events) was withdrawn for reasons that are not very clear. They say that the WFF has failed to provide detailed balances, but there is also the impression among many people that they have just echoed criticisms aimed to Losique's personality. Perhaps the WFF has not been very punctual in providing accounting information to the government agencies, but I wonder if the WFF is the only one in that situation. (I have heard that submitting late or sometimes incomplete information to the funding agencies is a common occurrence among the dozens of organizations that put together any kind of festival, but it seems that not all of them are penalized). Regarding Losique's supposedly authoritarian management style there are many versions. However, even if

Ironically, Losique has tried hard to please some of those people, in 2013 he was present at the screening of "La langue à terre" a mediocre propaganda film by Jean-Pierre Roy and Michel Breton that repeated old stereotypes about Anglophones, Italian-Canadians, and other allophones. We are just a little more than a week from its official start, and little has been said about the festival itself. There was no press conference this year to announce the lineup, only press releases. Quebec-made "Embrasses-moi comme tu m'aimes" ("Kiss me like a Lover") by André Forcier a drama touching the complex issue of incest, will be the opening film. It will also be in the World Competition category together with "The Unexpected" (An Zhanjun, China), "My Hindu Friend" (Hector Babenco, Brasil), "Tiger Theory" (Radek Bajgar, Czech Republic), "Everybody Happy" (Nic Balthazar, Belgium Netherlands), "The 4th Company" (Amir Galván Cervera, Mitzi Vanessa Arreola, Mexico – Spain), "Boundless" (Goutam Ghose, India), "The Con-

My motorcycle miracle man

By Heidi Shannon mtltimes.ca

mu Oil is used for so many ailments. We do not advertize it as such, but our customers do. I could talk about Emu Oil 'till the cows come home', for all of its amazing healing properties. What it’s done for me alone is a book of blogs. I use it cosmetically, regularly and love it more than any other product I have ever used. But check out this story... It’s late afternoon, a hot day, almost uncomfortable. Dealing with a packed booth, loving my job as always. It is Windsor, Ontario at the Art In The Park. Great show. Hundreds of vendors and the people of Windsor come, rain or shine. Two days, non-stop shoppers. I love it. In walks a man and wife. He’s about 40, good shape and arms wrapped in bandages. I could tell he was in pain. Forget the intense heat, shoulder to wrist bandages. The poor guy was walking with his arms outstretched, as if broken. I wanted to rip off the bondage. “Are you ok? “ I offer him the stool. "What happened?" “Motorcycle accident", he manages. I gasp, "Oh my god, are you burned?” “Burned is an understatement. I’m torched. Both arms. Some on my legs, but my arms got the majority of it.”

Teary-eyed but without hesitation, I reply, “If you don’t put emu oil on that right now it will be the worst mistake you ever make! I mean it. Our testimonials tell us that nothing in the world will give you relief like emu oil and not only will you heal fast but you also won’t scar." I look to his wife, “You have to put this on him today! I’m not letting you leave without it. Please believe me and please lather him in this ASAP!!!" I further reassure them that although we do not claim any cures on the labels, we are permitted to share customer testimonials. Emu oil has the highest Vitamin E of any plant or animal, along with the high concentration of omegas and deep penetration. Health companies and doctors who know emu oil, recommend it for burns. I also stressed that ours was ‘unrefined’ and was so much richer than the refined version. Understandably, he did not wish to undress his burns at the show. It was my continuing, demanding sureness that this was the key to his relief. They buy a small bottle. I beam, "You’ll buy a big one in a few days and will continue to for the rest of your life. You will become a believer of emu oil and you might just become as annoying as I am. Ordering online is easy." I add, “Call me with your feedback, for I have to know what happens. Please. Promise?” He shrugs, "If this works, I’ll be calling you for sure.” No call. No e-mail. Noth-

ing. Nil. Why don’t people do what they say they will do? It’s not like I forget these people! I think about them all the time. Especially this poor man. He was really badly burned and I had to know what happened. Next year. Windsor. In my booth. Busy. In struts ‘My Motorcycle Man’. I knew him immediately. “Why didn’t you call me? Show me your arms!” “I’m so sorry. I’m a guy. Look though. No scars. I came to show you. I bought a large bottle of the oil within a week of meeting you. The burns were soothed within days and healed in weeks and I’m a true believer in emu oil and can’t say enough about my miraculous story. I tell everyone. I came here today to show you what it looks like.” He presents his arms as a glorious gift. “It’s as if I was never even burned. I also need another large size. I just love it on my skin. Thank you for making me buy one last year and thank you for having such an outstanding product." I gave him ‘the look’, and smiled, "You’re lucky you’re a man. I’m so happy that you came back to tell me. I was waiting a whole year for you and your story. I can sleep now.”

F

By Sylvia K. Montreal Times

alafel St. Jacques is fal-awfully good, and they have the abundance of clientele to prove it! Very recently, we visited during the Wednesday suppertime rush to sample several of their dishes and desserts. Here are the delicious details: Approaching the neat, black-painted exterior, it became clear the restaurant was lively and filled with happy customers. Once inside, we ordered a hummus falafel plate with three salads, a hummus shish taouk and shawarma combination plate with more salads, and fries. To drink, there was the wildly refreshing lemonade, ice cold with real mint leaves (not to sweet, not too tart), which was just lovely. First of all, the hummus at Falafel St. Jacques is smooth and light, but still substantial, and very wellblended. What's most notable about it, however, is that unlike some hummus elsewhere, it has the perfect amount of lemon and garlic and is therefore not overpowering or sour, but just right. This is good because it forms a base for

The Healing Art of Reflexology Sponsored

R

eflexology is not a new therapy by any means, it has been around for more than 5000 years ago practiced in China, in Egypt, which had one of the oldest documented examples of the practice of this therapy. A pictograph dated around 2500-2330 BC at Saqqara in the tomb of the Physician Ankmahor shows two practitioners working on their two clients. Another track if this therapy was passed down to the American Indians. The western knowledge of Reflexology has early roots in Europe where it was known and practiced as far back as the fourteenth century it came to North America about 100 years ago. The interest and knowledge has continued and it has developed into a worldwide therapy. Reflexology is a Natural Healing Therapy without the use of drugs. It is based in the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet which correspond to every part,

gland and organ of the body. By stimulating these reflexes, we are sending natural energy along the nervous system or meridian lines to clear any congestion or blockage on these lines in the corresponding zones. This helps improve the flow of blood which in turn sends any nutrients needed to areas which are congested or blocked due to illness. This then helps these areas become balanced and normalized. There are thousands of nerve ending in each foot which are connected to the spinal cord, brain and all areas of the body, which explains the great relaxation status during and after the session which leads to relieving tension and stress. The Reflexology session takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour in length and is done in a quiet and relaxing environment accompanied by relaxing therapeutic music, essential aromatic oils and a variety of light therapies in the same time for its effectively in

the management of a number of disorders. Professional stimulation of the reflex areas on the feet serves to establish which parts of the body are out of balance and therefore not working efficiently. Reflexology is a very relaxing art and has proven effective for a variety of aliments. It can be successfully used for the most of life’s every day problems such as headaches, high and low blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, constipation, kidneys, bladder problems, arthritis, many forms of neck and back pains and is an excellent for management of P.M.S. problems. It also helps to prevent disease and allows you to live a happy healthy, relaxed lifestyle with a positive outlook on life. Do you suffer from back pain? Sponsored

By Sima Goel D.C. enly believe the pain has subsided. However, lower mtltimes.ca

o you suffer from debilitating lower back pain that affects your legs and overall movement? If you have answered yes to this question, then you are amongst the thousands of Canadians who experience some of the most intense and agonizing consistent pain. Left untreated, back pain can become chronic and affect more then just your back, if progressed it will lower your overall quality of life. THE CAUSE Slips, twists, lifts and falls all contribute to subluxation (pinched nerve) where vertebras shift out of proper alignment. It is important to listen to your body’s warning signs and seek professional help before your pain intensifies. Many will experience lower back pain and sciatic leg pain after injuring their lower back. Convinced the pain will disappear, most mask their pain with medication, limit

back pain when left untreated will eventually resurface after even the slightest of movements. Remember, without treating the cause, pain can never go away on its own. THE EFFECT If you have mild or moderate back pain or sciatic leg pain, you may still function at some mid range degree. However, as your pain intensifies your quality of life decreases and can result in increased irritability, poor job performance, reduced mobility, loss of motion and overall unhappiness. When a spinal vertebra shifts out of alignment, it puts unnecessary pressure on the spinal nerve, causing reduced nerve flow. Subluxation happens as a result of our daily activity and movement, which over time through micro traumas causes unnecessary pain and abnormal function. You do not need to get injured in order to experience pain. Chiropractic care aims to realign the vertebrae’s and encourage the body

to begin its natural healing process. Proper spinal alignment will alleviate, headaches, fibromyalgia, neck and shoulder pain, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, allergies, back pain, sciatica, sport injuries, arthritis, knee pain and fatigue to name a few. It is important to remember that our nervous system controls our entire body and neglecting it affects our overall function. Each vertebral bone is attached to a nerve, which sends signals to the rest of the body. When the spine is aligned, the nervous system is able to function optimally. If you are experiencing pain, do not ignore your body’s cry for help, and consult your local chiropractor for a spinal check-up! Chiropractic care is an affordable and proven method of treatment that is covered by most private insurance providers. (514) 344-6118 www.drsimagoel.com
