Taking Public Transit for a day

have written a lot lately about the nightmare of infrastructure work Montreal is in the throes of and how hard it is on commuters to the point it is literally effecting our well-being. The only solution Mayor Coderre has offered so far to our collective angst is his cry for 'commuters to leave their cars at home and take public transit', although I doubt

he has followed his own edict and probably doesn't see the inside of a bus or metro car very often, outside of publicity and photo ops. And so, I decided to put my feet where my words are and spent a full day using the very system he believes will save us from the mess. Last week, during a cold and rainy day, I embarked upon my mission with an open mind. In fact, I was hoping the public transit solution had merit, otherwise the sanity of millions of commuters were at stake. My first appointment was scheduled for 10:00 am in Westmount. I began by organizing myself for my meetings - and quickly realized I would need a back-

pack. Not only would I need to carry folders and papers, I also needed to bring with my cellphone, notepad and pens, and since I would be out for the day I needed an umbrella, a change of socks (in case I got soaked), a lighter jacket for inside, a small water bottle, some snacks, wallet, glasses - and required personal items. Before I left, I checked the bus schedule one last time, grabbed the Opus card I bought ahead of time for my fares and headed out the door. By car I might have made it to my first destination in approximately 20 to 30 minutes, al-

wait I mustered my courage. Well, 8:29 came and went, I looked down the road but nary a bus in sight. Finally at 8:35 I could see a bus heading toward us - and then right past us, for reasons completely unclear to me. Fortunately another bus arrived a few minutes later, the 202, but I forgot it would only bring us to the South entrance of the Du College metro station and I planned to pass

by my bank near the North entrance - one, long block away. I began to wonder if I would make my appointment in time. By the time I got into the station it was 8:55. It had taken me 35 minutes just to get there. Once inside, the warmth of the station calmed me and with it I found hope. It was fairly crowded and I joined my fellow commuters as we headed towards the escalator. I hobbled my way down to the tracks and within just a few minutes the distinct sound of a train coming through the tunnel was heard and headlights soon appeared as it careened into the station with a gust of wind before coming to a smooth stop. Even though the metro cars were rather full I managed to get a seat and settled down comfortably as the doors closed and the familiar tones of 'doo-doodoo' signaled departure. With only seven stops to go before I reached the Vendome station, I relaxed into my seat, feeling very good as I imagined thousands of cars bottle-necked on the roads above as we slithered comfortably underground - without a detour or cone in sight. Instead of having to focus on the roads, I was able stare blankly into space with a smile on my face instead of a contorted scowl of frustration while behind the wheel.

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. hat was the title of the symposium organized by the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada together with McGill Faculty of Law and the University of Toronto's School of Public Policy and Governance this past Tuesday at McGill Faculty Club. The event was well-timed since in a month, on December 1, the all-party Committee on Electoral Reform must issue its report to the House of Commons in Ottawa. The first session of the symposium focused on the "general principles that should guide us in evaluating an electoral system" and was moderated by Alain Dubuc, a columnist for La Presse

and Le Soleil. Daniel Weinstock, McGill professor at the Faculty of Law and Director of McGill Institute for Health and Social Policy, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, former Chief Electoral Officer, and Arash Abizedeh, McGill professor in Political Science, were the panelists. The main issue on which the participants centred was representation, and how the present system (Firstpast-the-post) would fail to reflect the support for the different political parties accurately. The issue of the low turnout at recent elections was also mentioned, with various possible solutions, from lowering the voting age, to introducing mandatory voting. But in adopting any of those possible approaches one would have to be very careful about their possible repercussions. The second session discussed Evidence and Experience, this regarding the performance of the current First-Past-thePost system in Canada. It was moderated by Martin Patriquin, Quebec bureau chief for Maclean's magazine, with the participation of Peter Louwen, professor at the Dept. of Political Science at the University of Toronto, Elizebeth Gidengil and An-

or over two decades now Sun Youth has been helping low income families heat their homes through the cold winter months, this is done through what is known as the Heating Assistance Program. By working directly with Hydro-Québec’s collection department and various heating oil companies Sun Youth can negotiate a personalized solution to a family who has fallen on hard times during the coldest time of year. Over 300,000 litres of heating oil have been distributed without charge to clients in need. These continuous donations are made possible due to a very valuable partnership with AQUIP (l’Association Québécoise des Indépendants du Pétrole) who works with Sun Youth to

broker deal between oil companies and clients. Another way Sun Youth can contribute to a client’s well-being through the winter is through their partnership with Éconologis, which has set up a booth this fall at Sun Youth making it easier to approach and inform clients on improving energy efficiency and the level of comfort in lower income households. To improve efficiency, Éconologis agents offer advice on fine tuning usage of lighting, heating, hot water and household appliances. They can also visit people’s homes (following their landlords’ authorization) and install new electronic thermostats which will improve energy efficiency. Finally, the agents verify the level of humidity

in the apartment to increase the indoor air quality. To be eligible to this program, one must receive a Hydro-Québec bill in one’s name and household revenue must be under the minimum income threshold. The phone number to find out if you are eligible to this program is 1-844-3037333. Éconologis’ representatives have met hundreds of people at Sun Youth’s headquarters last winter over 250 of people have shown interest in the program. Sun Youth is happy to host Éconologis again this year since both organizations share the same goal of helping people better their own situation. 010-021817

But my Zen moment was crushed as more commuters boarded at each stop, to the point where there was barely standing room only and the car was packed like 'sardines in a can' as the saying goes. And it smelled equally as bad with perfumes, cigarette smoker residue, body odors, bad breath - and smells I rather not know where the source came from. People were holding onto whatever they could as the train moved forward with a jerk. To top it off, a man with a young child who had a runny nose, sneezing and coughing into the air without a care and no Kleenex in sight, sat down right next to me. I pulled my backpack higher up on to my lap and tried to breathe through it. Approximately 15 minutes later we arrived at Vendome and by the time I got outside of the station it was almost 9:30. I was glad I left early enough and my client's office was just a 10 minute walk away. At this point, I had mixed feelings about my journey. First destination: STM ESTIMATED TRAVEL TIME 32 minutes / ACTUAL TRAVEL TIME 58 minutes. I arrived at my client's office on Sherbrooke St. somewhat tired and disheveled, but on time. All went well and I was out of there by 11:15. My next stop was also on Sherbrooke, not too far away in NDG, so I headed towards a bus stop, of which were plentiful in the area and within a couple of minutes one arrived. I was at my next appointment in no time. Second destination: STM ESTIMATED TRAVEL TIME 10 minutes / ACTUAL TRAVEL TIME 8 minutes. I left the first draft of a heavy manuscript behind, lessening the weight of my backpack that had become a heavy burden and I was out by 11:50. My next appointment in Cote Saint-Luc wasn't until 2:00 pm, so I called up a friend who worked in the area and we met for lunch at a restaurant nearby. I grabbed another bus and was starting to feel more positive about things, especially not having to deal with parking. At around 1:00 pm I made my way back by bus again to the Vendome station in less than 15 minutes. At that time it was far less crowded, but I ended up having to wait over 25 minutes for a train to arrive - delayed for an unknown reason. By the time it pulled into the station I was feeling exhausted. The weight of my backpack, climbing stairs and dropping my umbrella several times was starting to take a toll

My client was very understanding and we managed to get everything done in a few hours as we had planned - and by 5:30 I was on my way home. It was dark and dreary and I only hoped the bus would be on time. It wasn't. Apparently the 161 is notorious for being extremely late, especially at that time of the day. Movember in full whiskery swing

t’s that time of year again. It’s November, or Movember, which means that moustaches are sprouting up everywhere and parties featuring these mustached men are being hosted at every bar and restaurant in town. Much like last year – men across the city will be shaving off their gorgeous, hairy beards, letting their upper lip accumulate a little (or a lot) of fuzz all month long! By Alyssa De Rosa In short, Mo Bros raise money to fight the nummtltimes.ca ber one male cancer – prostate cancer. On aver- of prostate cancer every age, 11 Canadian men die day. The moustache is

about changing the face of men’s health, getting men to discuss health issues and take action before it’s too late. Some stories resonate closer to home than others and it’s evident that every stache has their own story. Whether they are letting it grow for their friend, father, uncle, grandfather or for the cause in general, it’s a global event that has both men AND women participating. To date, the Movember community has raised well over $574 million since 2003 when it all began and funded 800

Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation holds successful masked ball

O

ver 400 people attended the 6th edition of the Incognito Masked Ball, which was held by Young Leaders Circle of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation on October 28, at the Entrepots Dominion, on St. Ambroise Street. Presented by Engel & Volkers and McGill Real Estate, this year’s Incognito Masked Ball went under the theme of “Meet Me at the Ball”.The multitude of guests were dressed in their semi-formal cocktail chic and masked best, whether it be Halloween style, classic masquerade, super heroes, commedia dell’arte or even Star Wars. As soon as they entered the site of the ball, they were greeted by some unique musical entertainment, which included a pair of Genji pianists from Japan, who played a selection of classic and contemporary compositions in tandem without breaking their rhythm, and Gabrielle, a local violinist who played the instrument with a

great deal of flair and passion. The main site of the masked ball was a breathtaking mixture of light, music and several stations that gave the guests an ambiance of romance, mystery, reverie and roses in an enchanted fairy tale setting. There were photo booths, an oyster raw bar,

a candy bar, a “truth or dare” table that was sponsored by Apothic Wines (in which guests can choose a truth or dare card and write or perform whatever is requested on the card in question), and a silent

auction table, where guests can bid on a large selection of top drawer items such as jewellery, cosmetic gift baskets, hotel packages, a Mountain Lake PBS mother/daughter surprise box, a McLaren Team F1 hat autographed by one the team drivers, and a Montreal Canadiens jersey signed by Alexander Galchenyk. Proceeds from the masked ball benefitted the hospital’s H.B. Williams Craniofacial and Cleft Surgery Unit, so that it could continue to remain at the forefront of both these important surgical fields across Quebec and Canada, and continue its mission of aiding and treating children with craniofacial disorders, which affect the bones of both the skull and the face. The ball is one of the events that is organized by the Young Leaders Circle, whose mission is to make a positive impact on pediatric care in Quebec through original, creative fundraising programs.

Canada by Mike Myers

T

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

oronto-born Mike Myers is best remembered as a member of the famed Second City troupe, as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, and the creative comic mind who gave us such memorable characters as Wayne Campbell, “Coffee Talk” klatscher Laura Richmond, Austin Powers, and his hapless nemesis Dr. Evil. But Myers, like his fellow SNL alumni Lorne Michaels, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short and Phil Hartman, is Canadian by birth. And although he spent the first 20 years of his life in his native Toronto before he moved to England to broaden his comedy career, Myers’ heart has stayed true to his home and native land. And his love for the true north strong and free is well expressed in his justreleased tome Canada. This book continues the trend of what many Canadian authors, journalists and documentary filmmakers have tried to do since Confederation: explain what Canada is all about to those who live below the 49th Parallel and beyond its Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and what makes this country so unique; only this time, Myers gives his own fond – and comedic – spin on living in Canada and what it’s like to be a Canadian. However, this book is more than just a love letter to Canada. What makes it so enjoyable is that Myers leans more towards the autobiographical to tell his Canadian

• November 5, 2016

story. We find out about the son of British-born parents (whose father was an Encyclopedia Britannica salesman who was a big fan of comedy), who experienced an all-Canadian upbringing, from enjoying the rickety rides at the annual Canadian National Exhibition (aka the “Ex”), to watching the cult kids’ TV show “The Hilarious House of Frightenstein”, to consuming copious quantities of Hostess potato chips (ketchup flavour) and Cherry Blossoms, to trying to scam motorists from surrendering their NHL Power Players hockey stamps to him and his brothers at the local Esso station circa 1970-71 (which I can readily identify with; I am Myers’ age, and I vividly remember trying in vain to get my dad to fill his car at Esso to get those coveted Power Players, because he preferred Shell or Texaco). As well, Myers gives the reader a rather easy-tounderstand perspective of Canada’s unique role as a world player, especially during the period from 1967-1976, which he calls Canada’s “Next Great Nation” phase, which was bookended between Expo 67 and the 1976 Montreal Olympics. His uncomplicated narrative style not only reaches out to American readers who want a reader-friendly explanation of everything Canada, but also serves as quite the refresher course for the Canadian reader (Pierre Berton would have been proud). Fans of Myers won’t be disappointed with this book, too, as they discover how he developed his comedy career. This ranges from watching “The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour” on CBC during the early 70s, to appearing in local commercials (which at times relied on the skills he obtained from dance classes he took), to watching the first episode of Saturday Night live in 1975, in

at his office when he gave it his official OK. Canada is part love letter to a celebrity’s home country and showbiz memoir, and somehow succeeds on both counts. Although people will continue to explain what Canada is about to the rest of the world, Mike Myers proves that it’s a country that has its own unique way of life and way of thinking, and that Canada helped shape his career in comedy. So now you can add the label “patriot” (and maybe “parttime historian”) to Mike Myers’ resume. And to

prove that, consider this passage that explains one of the many reasons why he loves his home and native land: “When I see Canadians on the street anywhere in the world, I get very happy. I love that the entire interaction often involves people simply saying hello and then telling me the town in Canada that they’re from. I’ll be on the street and a fellow Canadian will say, ‘Mike … Kamloops!’ And that’s it. Nothing else has to be said. I love that!” (Doubleday Canada, $39.95)

Mike Myers which he fell in love with present when Michaels a young Gilda Radner, and summoned him to meet vowed to his skeptical, teasing brothers that one day he will end up as a cast member on that show. We also get the story of how he developed one of his most popular characters – Wayne Campbell – which was actually based on people he knew while growing up in Scarborough; how he discovered Canada from coast-tocoast while a member of the Second City touring company (including encounters with admiring devil worshippers in Nova Scotia and a near fatal encounter with a pack of wolves in BC); and how he built a huge following in England as one-half of the comedy team Mullarkey and Myers (and even started an improv comedy workshop that is still run in England to this day). As well, Myers give his own insights into the Open Tuesday to Saturday 5pm till 11pm fiercely competitive, dogeat-dog world of being a "Bistro Grace..An Absolute Must" member of the Saturday Rhonda Massad West Island Blog Night Live cast, which is exemplified by his uphill "Our Favorite Place,We Can't Get Enough" battle to get his “Wayne’s Wise Women Canada World” sketch on the show, which involved an exhaustive process with the show’s writers, producers and creator/executive producer Lorne Michaels. The first Wayne and Garth sketch actually made it to the show in question (albeit the last sketch on that show’s line-up), but almost lost that spot when he wasn’t

Pet of the week! 'Meet Ringo the Therapy Cat'

ingo is a 9 year old therapy-cat who brings much joy to the humans in his life. Cynthia Koomas and her family adopted him when he was around five years old and he's been living with them in Montreal West for nearly four years. "Ringo came to live with us - or should I say, Ringo chose us as his family. Exactly one week previous to his adoption, we had lost our precious Marcus to an aneurysm and had vowed to wait at least six months before searching for a new cat," said Cynthia. But alas, with the famous last words 'we’ll just take a drive to visit this rescue place', they headed out and well, Ringo clearly captured their hearts - as much as they captured his. "Ringo had a rocky start to his life with us.We discovered he had IBS and our vet suggested he take medication to control it.

A massage and a smile Sponsored

W

By Heidi Shannon mtltimes.ca

ho wants to be in pain? S e r i o u s l y, what kind of question is that? Pain is terrible. You can take pills, baths, see doctors, but really, you just want something to work. I know I do and I will tell you I’ve had my majority of pain and I’m only 36. Whether it’s cramps or my back or headaches. Just get rid of it, I say. Many people have told me about their pain. Earth to Body cannot sell anything specifically for pain, but we sell product for massage. Sometimes a gentle massage with the right oils can work wonders. I hear constantly. “I don’t want to take pills all day. Do you have anything that might help me with my pain?” My response. “We sell a massage ‘Soothing Oil’. It DOES just that.” It was 10 years ago and a story I will forget. It reminds me of my Grandma Alma. I loved her so much and miss her everyday. I was at the Dorval Shopping mall, working my booth and loving my job back then, just as much as I do now. This sweet French Canadian Grandma approaches my booth and says, “I have back pain. Do you make anything for this?” I reply, “Not specifically. But we make a massage ‘Soothing Oil’. Would you like to try it? We sell it as a gentle massage, but so many customers find relief. People tell us emu oil is good for pain relief. Would you like to give it a try?” She sounds relieved, “S’il vous plait. Can you rub it on for me as I can’t reach my back?” I am a little shocked. Normally, I would never rub a

stranger’s back. Ever! But, this lady was too cute and old and in real pain for me to care. Plus, she reminded me of my Grandma. She smelled like her and had her soft, pale skin. So I agreed, “For sure, I’ll rub your back.” She was so happy, dropped her purse and lifted up her sweater and grinned “All right!!” I massaged her lower back until the oil blend was completely rubbed in. I mentioned that it doesn’t always work right away and sometimes not at all for that matter, but it’s natural and chemical free. She smiled, bent down to retrieve her purse and looked up at me with this look of confusion. “My pain is gone! Is that possible?” I grinned, “People tell me yes. It is possible. We sell it for a gentle massage and along with right oil blend, it can work wonders!” She was so happy and so

in disbelief, I just felt her excitement. She bought one for herself and one for her husband. “If he’s going to rub me then I guess I should buy one to rub him!” We both laugh. I’ll never forget her reaction and that genuine smile.” A hug, a massage and caring can do wonders. We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. West Island Citizen Advocacy receives four to five new requests for servicers every week on behalf of residents in need. WICA is in need of volunteers to meet the growing demand of our vulnerable West Islanders. There are many seniors, intellectually and physically challenged as well as those experiencing mental health issues who are looking for practical, emotional and social support. It could be something as simple as accompanying them on errands or sharing a cup of coffee with them. Every match WICA makes is unique depending on availability, compatibility, language, location, and interests. You can make a dif-

ference in someone`s life! Please call 514-694-5850 for more info on how to make an invaluable impact in your community. Course & Lectures
