Angelike Falbo latest - “I found love” is available on itunes

uring the 3rd season of TVA'S hit singing competition 'La Voix' in 2015 (the French version of NBC's 'The Voice'), Angelike Falbo, a young singer from SaintLéonard, captured the hearts of Quebecers with her extraordinary vocal performances. It was her rendition of 'You Lost Me', a song by Christina Aguilera that prompted Isabelle Boulay, an international star and one of Quebec's most respected singers, to be the first to turn her chair around and take on Angelike as part of her La Voix team. Under her coaching, Angelike went on to become the youngest singer, at 16 years old, who made it to the finals. She might have

come in 2nd place at the end, but it was just the beginning for this talented vedette. During La Voix’s finale,

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

Angelike got to share the stage with the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Kelly Clarkson and even Def Leppard (which absolutely thrilled her father

who grew up listening to them) but the icing on the cake for her was when she received a video message during the show from her idol Christina Aguilera, wishing her good luck. Her single 'I Found Love' was the most requested song on 94.7 Hits FM in their 'Future Hits' segment. It was also a BUZZTRACK of the MC Mario show on Virgin 96 radio. The French version of her single called 'Dans Tes Bras' (written by Jacynthe) reached #9 on Stingray's Franco Pop, #6 at CHOQ FM in Toronto and #14 on iTunes French chart sales. But the highlight for Angelike was signing a record deal with manager/producer Sylvain Lachapelle of La Chapelle

records. Her first album, 'Confidence', is scheduled to be released in February 2017. It is an exhilarating time for this very talented and mature 18 year old - and I had the opportunity to speak with her and here is what we discussed (edited for space): It's been a very exciting time for you, especially with your new album in the works. When did you go into studio to begin recording? "About 2-3 months ago… things are actually going pretty fast. I'm a very quick learner and I like to write some of my songs as well, and it takes me about a day (to write one). When I'm really inspired I can do it really quickly! The vocals and the recording, it also takes me about a day… but what really takes long is the process of mixing and mastering… otherwise, I'm doing a lot of interviews and stuff." You said you are writ-

ing your own songs, will any of them be on the album? "Well, it's a lot of teamwork, some of the songs we wrote together someone wrote the melodies and the instrumentals, the music and then I collaborated on the lyrics. Sometimes I write some of the lyrics then I send it to them and they tweak some stuff and so some modifications… but about three songs (will be on the album)." Will the album be a mix of English and French? "I would say mostly English. The singles that we're going to be releasing are going to be bilingual, but were doing the album mostly in English." The album's release will follow with a tour, probably in March. After La Voix, Angelike did a full year of college at Cégep Marie-Victorin in the music and singing program. She wanted to continue her studies but the

demands of studio work and the album had her missing too many classes - and Angelike likes to give 100% of herself. "I don't know how long I am going to have to wait before going back to school… depending on how things go with my music. Hopefully I'll make it big and not ever have to go back, but it's always good to have a 'Plan B'! It's not too late for me, I'm still young... I think now is really the time to push and give all I got… and now that things are starting to happen, I need to really give my 100%." At first her father had no idea how talented she was. When she told him that she wanted to study music and singing he asked to hear her sing first. Being very shy at the time, Angelike told him to stay upstairs, while she went down to the basement to sing. He was blown away.

How to sell a house that didn't sell

MONTREAL - If your home has just come off the market and hasn't sold, don't be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn't Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period.

ith the weather starting to add a bit of a chill in the air, and the sun starting to set earlier, these are sure signs that winter is making its slow but steady arrival. And whether you are a Canadian snowbird or someone who would like a brief break from the cold and snow of a Canadian winter, the Sunshine State itself, Florida, is making its clarion call to those Canadian tourists who are craving that winter escape. And there are many Canadians who are heeding that call. In fact, they are doing it in droves. “I was born in Hell,” she says. In a giant cemetery where every footfall disturbs an unmarked grave. Angela was born in Auschwitz. Say that out loud a few times. “Born in Auschwitz.” It’s a phrase that makes no sense: a baby, carried and birthed in a death camp, a symbol of hope born too late for such a sentiment to have any real meaning... except for later. She was one of two Jewish babies born just prior to the liberation of Auschwitz. She shouldn’t have survived, either in utero or out. But such was her mother’s determination that Angi lived to tell her story. It’s a story she’s told countless times with pride, a story she hopes to tell again and again.

And here she was, at the first legacy project for Montreal’s 375th anniversary, the inauguration of the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion of Peace at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Angi was one of eight panelists, flanked by another Holocaust Survivor on her right, and on her left a Vietnamese refugee, one of the roughly two million Boat People who fled that war-torn country. Next to her, a refugee of Pinochet’s Chile, a former child soldier from Sudan, an Afghani refugee, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, and a recent Syrian refugee. They are Montrealers, now, whose stories span a hateful history. The Holocaust began when the last century was still too young to know better, with an expression of a hate that defined the 20th century, and bled into

he was born Charlotte Lubotsky in Milwaukee 89 years ago, the second of three daughters to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. Her father ran a successful tire and appliance business in downtown Milwaukee and her mother was a committed Zionist, whose grammar school mate was one Golda Meyerson, who as Golda Meir became the first woman prime minister of Israel. At an early age, young Charlotte found out she had a talent to entertain, as a singer and actress/comedian. She studied theatre at Northwestern University in Chicago, where some of her soonto-famous classmates included comedian Paul Lynde, and acclaimed actresses Patricia Neal and Cloris Leachman. She appeared on Broadway several times – including the original production of the hit musical “Lil’ Abner” – and earned herself two Tony nominations. But it was on television where Charlotte Lubotsky – now Charlotte Rae – best displayed her many performing talents, from countless commercials to guest and

regular spots on “The Ed Sullivan Show”, “All in the Family”, “Car 54, Where Are You?” and “The Rich Little Show”. However, it was her portrayal of the kind and wise Edna Garrett, first on the NBC sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes” and then on its successful spin-off “The Facts of Life”, that made Rae a bona fide TV star and Mrs. Garrett one of the best known mother figure characters in the history of television. And for a career in show business that is still going strong after nearly 70 years (most recently in a role in this year’s feature film “Ricki and the Flash” with Meryl Streep), Charlotte Rae’s road to Eastland School and Edna’s Edibles was filled with plenty of highlights and pitfalls, both personal and professional. And it’s all told with a great deal of honesty, pain and grace in her recently-published memoir The Facts of My Life, which she co-wrote with her youngest son Larry Strauss, who is a teacher and professional writer. The book outlines in great detail her impressive career in show business,

which saw her grace the New York cabaret scene, the Broadway and regional theatre stage, the silver screen and of course, television (her list of acting credits at the end of the book lists nearly 50 TV show appearances, which dates back to as early as 1954). There are plenty of interesting anecdotes that she shares with the reader of her multi-media career (my favorite is one period in the mid-50s, when she shuttled between performng in two major New York stage productions … the hit Broadway musical “The Pajama Game” by day and a production of the classic “Three Penny Opera” by night). Also, Rae chronicles the many personal struggles she endured throughout her career, including the constant concerns of getting regular acting jobs to pay the bills, her bout with alcoholism, finding out that her husband -- musical composer John Strauss – was a homosexual, and most difficult of all, being a loving and devoted mother to her sons, especially her oldest son Andy, who was living with an autistic disorder at a time when autism was rarely heard about or diagnosed at best, and whose volatile, violent tendencies compelled her and John to have him committed to New York’s notorious Bellevue Hospital psychiatric ward (although when they moved to California, they found a more humane clinic for Andy, where he managed to live with his autism and enjoy a full life until his untimely death from a heart attack

www.mtltimes.ca

in 1999 at the age of 43). However, the last third of the book deals with behind-the-scenes stories of “The Facts of Life” and the lead character that has made her a household name with TV viewers even more than 25 years after the show went off the air … Mrs. Garrett. “There are many people who grew up with me and Facts of Life. In fact, many people still think of me as Mrs. Garrett, and when they see me in person, they want a hug from me,” said Rae during a recent phone interview. “The writers and producers of ‘Facts’ allowed me to make Mrs. Garrett a more loving, more human kind of character. As a result, the viewers loved Mrs. Garrett so much, that they wished their mothers were more like her.” Rae believes that the lasting appeal of “The Facts of Life” is attributed to how it dealt with the many issues that teenagers faced back in the 80s when the show first aired, and still face today. “The show did a great job portraying the issues that kids go through, as well as the many struggles and joys of life, and even parents watched it with their children, which I find was a tremendous asset of the show,” she said. And Rae still keeps in touch with her four “Facts” co-stars – Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields, Nancy McKeon and Mindy Cohn – and keeps track with how they are raising their own families. In fact, one of Rae’s favorite stories that involved her costars dealt with how she

discovered Mindy Cohn. “I was visiting a private school in L.A. to listen to some of its female students and get some background information for the show, when one girl with a funny-sounding voice kept asking me questions. I thought she was so cute; so I asked her to read for one of the parts, and she got hired for the part of Natalie Green. And that’s how I discovered Mindy Cohn,” she said. With her 90th birthday coming up this April, Rae is grateful for a career in show business that has lasted seven decades, and for the positive effect her portrayal of Mrs. Garrett for seven years on network TV has had on millions of viewers, and admits she would like to continue acting on screen. “I am grateful for everything that I have, and I want to continue working, but this time in moderation. I don’t need a lot; I live modestly these days and I enjoy it,” she said. The Facts of My Life is a very entertaining, frank memoir of a veteran actress with almost 70 years worth of stage, movie and TV credits to her name, and has the enviable position of being forever associated with one of the most recognized mother figure characters on television. And Charlotte Rae’s life and career, to paraphrase the theme song from the show that made her famous, took the good, took the bad, took them both and there you have the facts of Charlotte Rae’s life.

Foundation of Greater Montreal announces support for social and artistic projects

or Montrealers 2017 will be a dual celebration year: the 375th anniversary of the city and the 150 years of the Canadian Confederation. To mark the occasion, the Foundation of Greater Montreal (FGM) announced this past Tuesday its support for 71 projects distributed across 20 districts in Montreal. "2017 must be a year of celebrations, but also of social progress for all Montreal's neighbourhoods. The projects propose activities aimed at inclusion, vulnerable youth, reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples, the development of commitment in the community and many others. We are very proud of these projects which are directly funded by the community. They will allow us to reach more than a million people," said Yvan Gauthier, CEO of the FGM, during the ceremony held at the Salle Le Gesù. The importance of these projects for the Montreal community was also emphasized by Diane de Courcy, Interim Director of the Bureau de l'expérience client, and Responsible for the City of Montreal's Follow Up Bureau Je Fais Mtl. addressed the innovative character of the projects and how they could be a suitable element in the fight against poverty in the city. "They will be a catalyzing force for change," said Ms.Vallée. Ten of the groups whose projects were approved by the Foundation made a short presentation featuring the highlights of what they intend to do. Win $1,000 for the West Island Charity of your choice with a can of food

H

By Rhonda Massad mtltimes.ca

unger on the West Island is very real. Difficult to believe but real none the less. There is not one West Island city that does not have residents seeking help each month from one of the many food banks each month. More than 2,000 people reach out in need of nutrition. When I decided to do a food drive to help a friend who wanted to show her young son, George, that life was not always blessed, I thought if I could make even a small difference to someone it was worth a shot. Either way, George would see the world a little differently after we did some-

thing for someone else in need. Since becoming a blogger, I learned that there were food banks on the West Island. Before that, I was in the dark. It was not something that had reached me. Reporting the news to my readers has taught me so much about the community. The subject of food security is one of those subjects. I wrote about On Rock, West Island Assistance Fund and the John Abbott College Food Bank. ( I quickly learned that the official term is Food Security, not Food Insecurity which made much more sense to me.) The Neighbours 4 Neighbours Food Drive (N4NFD) began as an event on Facebook with Stephanie and I working hard to make the page presentable with pictures and wording. What happened next was an explosion of community proportions. Help was offered immediately, posters

donated by The Business Box in Beaconsfield, but only after Dahna from MINC (my web developer) prepared all the graphics that made our event page a little more than presentable. My friends at Desjardins called me and wondered how they could get involved. They offered their latest Mobile Branch to be on site for the food drive to give people a fun reason to pass by. When people bring a donation of non-perishable items, they are automatically entered in a contest to win $1,000 to give to the West Island charity of their choice.

The part I was not expecting was the phone calls from other food banks in need of our help. I said yes to every single one that approached me. My contacts at John Abbott College nudged me on Facebook, and I realized they needed help too. N4NFD will now be helping five food banks this coming weekend. The community has gathered together in such a way that my garage is becoming a drop off point and I am happy to say I think we have at least can say John Abbott Food Bank will be ok. Articles have been written to help people

donate healthier choices. Girl Guides, ringette and hockey teams have offered to help. Pharmaprix, McDonald's and Tim Hortons will be giving. The Beaconsfield Citizens Association joined in our fight against hunger right from the start and has helped in the tedious details of poster distribution and administration. As a way to thank you all and spread the word, I will be hosting a social media awareness campaign following the event. Your photo will be taken (optional) and your family, organization, team or business will join the shar-

ing online to help spread the word about this local crisis. I hope to see you there. Life can change in an instant!

T

he Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation is reaching out to the West Island community, its partners, and business leaders to help raise $4.6 million dollars for 2016-2017. The money raised will help improve the level of critical, cardiac, geriatric, and mental health care West Islanders receive, close to home. “Our objective with this campaign is to offer our family, friends, and neighbours the best possible standard of care they are entitled to receive close to home,” says Heather Holmes, Managing Director of the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation. “Life can change in an instant, and by being close to our community, where we’ve always been for over 50 years, and investing in our local hospital, we ensure that when life changes, we are there for you,” adds Ms. Holmes. Built in the 1960s to serve a bedroom community of 60,000, the Lakeshore General Hospital (LGH) has since seen multiple expansions and transformations. The population served has now quintupled to nearly 300,000. With an aging population in its catchment area, the LGH is now treating ever-more complex medical and psycho-social conditions. Three projects have been earmarked as hospital priorities over the next two years: 1. Expand and integrate the Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Units (ICU-CCU) 2. Expand and enhance the Geriatric Unit 3. Enhance Psychiatric Unit • November 19, 2016

'Time to Rediscover Cantor Bagels - and so much more' W Daily baked croissants, pastries, bagels donuts, muffins cookies and cakes

ith a new s t o r e scheduled to open on November 24th on Victoria Ave. (corner of Carleton) and Gail Cantor now at the helm, it's time to rediscover Cantor bagels - and so much more. It's not just about their iconic bagels anymore, it's also

10

about croissants, pastries, donuts, muffins, cookies and their cakes - which can be customized for weddings, birthdays and special occasions. Their main factory located in St-Michel can produce over 10,000 loaves of bread, thousands of dozens of

croissants, rolls, muffins, donuts and danishes per day - and of course, bagels. In the old days the stores were mostly identified as depanneur/grocery stores, but they are getting away from that model. And with the new location you can expect to

see what that means. "We're going to get into prepared foods, so we can offer a more modern twist on what the public is looking for in a retail bakery outlet," Gail explains. "We will also have a stand-up area where people can come in and have a coffee, a bagel or a danish… we're going to showcase all different types of bakery goods. We're going to carry gluten free products, organic products, we're also going to carry a lot of gourmet products and it will be emphasized on a lot of home cooked foods and obviously home-cooked bakery products." As for the original bagel, not to worry. The recipe for their oldfashioned style remains the same. "It's the same recipe, we haven't changed! We're happy with our style. We have two different kinds, obviously the old-fashioned, but also the American style bagels with all the different flavors. We're good with our bagels!" They will also be offering goods like Biscotti, Rugelach and things you can't find in your typical supermarket outlet. Gail is also forward-thinking and has other plans for the business. "I'm actually working on another concept which will launch in a few months, which is going to be 'Cantor Entrepot', where you can come in and buy all

your bakery needs for your home at a much more cost effective price." Something else many people might not be aware of is that Cantor also produces and manufactures goods for

ally not very tasty." In the past, bagels might have been their moniker, but there are many people whose mouths have watered over their daily and fresh Rye, Challah, Pumpernickel and Russ-

places like supermarkets - as well as schools, cafeterias, hospitals and many other industries. They are also committed to providing safe, healthy, quality products and have been working towards the goal of achieving a 'Global Food Safety Initiative' (GFSI) certification, as well as 'Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points' (HACCP) certification for their factory. Gail invites people to come and rediscover Cantor, where they still offer all the old favorites. "We are offering the original, the old European-style bakery goods that are absolutely delicious. Our croissants, they are substantial, as opposed to having a flakey croissant that's full of air - and re-

ian breads, to name a few - and don't forget their delicious Cheese Danishes and Bagels. It's all there for you - or there for you to discover all over again! Well, as their new saying might go, 'You don't have to be a 'Montrealer' to love Cantor Bagels' - but if you are a Montrealer, I highly suggest you go check out the new store, where the classics meet the delicious new … I know I will. he United Irish Societies of Montreal Executive Committee is pleased to announce they have chosen the parade dignitaries and award recipients for the 194th St Patrick’s parade taking place March 19, 2017. The Grand Marshal, once a working position, is now a honourary one and has been going back many years. It is the highest honour parade organizers can bestow upon a person who has had a positive influence on the Montreal Irish community. We are pleased to announce Mayor Denis

Coderre will be the 2017 Grand Marshal. Since his introduction to the Montreal Irish community in 2013 Mayor Coderre has enthusiastically taken part in not only the parade but many other events in the community. His support and participation grows year after year. Mayor Coderre travelled to Ireland in 2015 to not only sign an agreement to foster relations with Dublin and have our two cities become sister cities but also took the opportunity to trace his Irish heritage. "I am deeply honoured to have been chosen

Grand Marshal for the 2017 St Patrick's Parade. As Mayor of Montreal and now 2017 Grand Marshal, it is with great pride I share my deepest love of my Irish heritage as I take part in one of Montreal's oldest traditions and the longest-running St Patrick's Parade in Canada. Irish heritage is an undeniable part of Montreal's history, as reflected on our City's flag, and I am convinced that the 2017 Parade will be one of the highlights of the 375th anniversary celebrations," said Mayor Coderre.

for the play as the fresh water crisis in Canada is ratcheting up, especially in light if the fact that the Harper government is about to close the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in northern Ontario, and as she is trying to interview experts and government officials to find out why this is happening, and discovers a somewhat cover-up is going on. The second part deals with the western road trip she and her family take in a

Winnebago to the tar sands region of Alberta as a means to discover why this fresh water crisis is happening. With “The Watershed”, Soutar has taken the genre of the documentary play to a whole new level, as she gives a very human side to a complex environmental issue that not many Canadians are aware of. And she manages to tell the story with a great deal of factual accuracy (and breaks it down so that the audience never gets lost with

all of the technical and scientific jargon), lightning speed, humour and a feel that you’re not just watching a play, but a CBC/NFB documentary feature of the highest quality. And Repo-Martell is complemented with a terrific ensemble cast, including veteran Canadian actor Eric Peterson, Daniel Brochu, Ngozi Paul, Laura Condlin, Bruce Dinsmore and especially Amelia Sargisson, who does a masterful job as she effortlessly switches between two roles

throughout the play: Soutar’s 10-year-old daughter Ella, and environmental activist Diane Orihel. With “Seeds” and “The Watershed”, Annabel Soutar has firmly established herself as a documentary-style playwright par excellence. In fact, “The Watershed” is almost like watching a report on “60 Minutes” and Soutar is the theatre’s answer to Mike Wallace.

The Barolos of Fontanafredda

T

o wine lovers with a preference for soft, fruity reds, Barolo could be like a glass of pain. Made from the acid, tannic nebbiolo grape, it first punches you with bracing acidity, then slowly returns with a backhand of gumsucking astringency.Toss in a nuance of tar, a nebbiolo hallmark, and you’ve got a wine with acquired taste written all over it. I should state:That’s how the wine is sometimes presented, and that could be not just. Barolo was one of my first wine discoveries, a red that proved grapes are not just fruit; they are capable of intellectual conversation. That was way back in my novice wine university days, when i had to put all my pennies together to buy a bottle of good barolo.

I think many young wine lovers are seduced right away to Barolo. I’ve seen it occur many times. And

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

why not? Besides the whiff of tar, there are perfumes of sweet cherry. prune liqueur and flowers. The perfume can be divine and glorious The wine’s name comes

from the town of Barolo in the northwest region of Piedmont, home to the Slow Food movement as well as the similarly styled nebbiolo reds of Barbaresco. In Piedmont, nebbiolo is often paired with braised meats, such as osso buco, whose proteins and fat tend to relax the grape’s tannic grip, and dishes involving the local white truffle, because there’s often an earthymushroom character to the wine. Fontanafredda is an amazing property located in the Barolo commune of Serralunga, initially purchased in 1858 by the King of Italy for her mistress named Rosa. As we can predict, monarchy don’t make a pass on the best portions when serving themselves, and Fontanafredda treasure

string of continuous south-facing vineyards has been a source of discord in the region for a century and a half. However, the same could not be said for the wines, however, as the estate went into a very commercial style during decades of ownership by financiers who were more concerned in fast returns rather than longterm attention to quality. Hope of a renaissance came when the estate was acquired in 2008 by Oscar Farinetti, an Italian businessman who was also the creator and financier of Eataly in New York. Although 2008 seemed like a bad year to make a giant real estate purchase, there was no doubt of the longterm value of what he purchased. Not long ago, I had the chance to taste a compre-

Danilo Brocco, winemaker of Fontanafredda

hensive selection of Fontanafredda wines in the company of their winemaker: Danilo Brocco. Me, along with a few journalists, had a chance to taste a few of their wines. This was also a chance to taste some older Barolos that were remarkable which proves the aging potential of the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is one of those wines that are perfect for the fall and winter season. They are the right companions to roast, stews or other meat dishes. However, older Barolos can pair really well with pastas in rich mushrooms sauce. The perfumed floral flavor of an older Barolo compliments really well the earthy flavors of the mushrooms. It is a happy marriage.

The Place: One of a Kind Craft show in Toronto Our ‘Earth to Body Natural Skin Care’ corner booth number 237. Year 2009. Early morning. Quiet. Enters a stylish woman, in her thirties, with long auburn hair. Her name is Sylvia. “Hi there.” She chimes, highly exasperated. “You will not believe my scalp. Look!” She parts her long hair. She sighs. I gasp. Courageously, she exposes the scabs behind her ears and on the nape of her neck. “My scalp is so itchy. I have red welts from scratching. I have tried every shampoo from here to Rome, been to specialists and nothing is helping. This has been going on for years. Do you have anything for this? Someone told me how natural and good your products are? I don’t know what else to try.” I have heard similar laments over the years, but I have never seen a scalp in such dire straits. I learn that she was warned to use the prescribed cortisone creams sparingly and only when desperate. “Which is all the time," she declares. “Health food stores are now carrying SLS and Paraben free shampoos.” I explain. “That is an option. It just may be that too many chemicals in certain commercial products are irritating you.‘ Earth to Body’ does not make liquid soaps, but we do have amazing 100% natural shampoo/soap bars. They are much like what was used over 50 years ago. Successfully, for centuries by the

way." I emphasize that changing her total routine might help. The often-recommended tar based shampoos and medicated creams may ease the discomfort for a while, they do not really get to the root of the problem. I suggest putting aside her regular products and trying totally all natural good nutrition, giving the hair and the skin the change to thrive. I recommend our shampoo/soap ESP as the emu oil and amla can be very soothing on her scalp problem. I then describe the importance of the apple cider vinegar rinse to restore her skin to a healthy alkaline state. That means not daily, only once or twice a week. If she wants conditioner, it too must be natural. I suggest either our pure argan oil or one of our butters (shargan or sheamu). I explain the importance of a good salt mineral soak. “Soak in our dead sea salt spa, making sure your scalp is submerged. Might be a little tricky but definitely doable. If your hair is a little greasy after, wear it in a wet ponytail look for a few hours or a day! It will wash clean, not to worry. Or choose the Himalayan Rock Crystals without the oil.” She grinned. “No problem. If it helps, I’ll try anything.” We dabbed a little of the X Cream around her ears and her on her neck. She loved the cool feeling. “This cream is great for relaxing dry, itchy skin and since it contains patchouli and black spruce it has a lovely ‘woodsy’ scent. Made totally from scratch, we have control what goes into it. And what does not.” Off she trotted with her bundle of hope. Two days later, she reen-

tered the booth. “Unbelievable”, she beamed. “ I felt the difference after only one bath. It has been 2 days now and look.” Expertly, she whipped her long hair into an upswing, exposing her nape and ears. “It’s like night and day," I agreed. “I have been thinking about you since you left. Thank you, Sylvia, so much, for coming back to show us.” Eliminating certain commercial products and substituting a good healthy alternative can do wonders. It is not that the shampoo bar claims a cure. There are no specific cures. One’s DNA, diet, environment all play a role. The key is to read the label. If you do not understand something, question it. If you see Sodium Laurel Sulphate, or Parabens, or Propylene Glycol make another choice. Our 100% natural bars make a beautiful lather, and can be used all over the body. Ask Sylvia. Pet of the week!

'Meet Snowy the Survivor'

"Snowy deserves to Pet of the Week because he is a survivor and a real charmer," said Lori, who last winter was with a friend in Mirabel photographing majestic Snowy Owls when they suddenly saw a black cat who was meowing and clearly starving, so they fed him. He followed them but they had to leave - yet they couldn't get him off their minds. "Not long after, we returned and he recognized us and started to follow us again. We brought food and fed him again, but this time he bit me on the lower ankle and (again) we had to leave - as it was suggested I go right to the emergency for a tetanus shot. Following this, a few animal lovers told me he probably did not want us to leave. So we went back… but prior to this, the temperature had dropped to -22 Celsius." When they arrived and did not see him anywhere, they feared the worst. Not long after they returned again - and this

time with a cage. "Suddenly out of nowhere, there he was but with a large wound on his head. He was probably in a fight and injured." They took him and immediately brought him in for medical attention. "He has been with us ever since and the love we have for each other is insurmountable… we found out he had a tough life, as his paws and ears

revealed. Somebody abandoned him in the fields with his front paws declawed, leaving him with limited survival skills. How cruel!" "He is my beautiful, mini-black panther and I will cherish him forever!" To submit your pet for 'Pet of the Week', email Bonnie at: bonnierwords@gmail.com or info@mtltimes.ca

How to boost your energy Sponsored

C

By Sima Goel D.C. mtltimes.ca

ould you benefit from more energy? The key isn’t found in sugar or caffeine – these provide temporary, unhealthy energy boosts that leave you feeling fatigued shortly thereafter. The key to sustainable energy is having an optimal nerve supply, adequate hydration, healthy eating habits and regular exercise. GET YOUR SPINE CHECKED Vertebral subluxation (pinched nerves) robs the body of its ability to focus, metabolize and heal properly. Having your spine checked for a pinched nerve is the first step in determining the functionality of your nervous system. It is important to understand that your nerve supply is your life supply. DRINK MORE WATER Did you know that along with vertebral subluxation, dehydration is one of the leading causes of fatigue? If you find yourself feeling tired in the middle of the day, drink a glass of water! In time, you will likely begin to feel more energized. What about the times you find yourself hungry, or craving a snack, even though you recently ate a meal? That might actually be thirst

you’re feeling, but your mind is telling you it is hunger. Instead of snacking, drink a glass of water. It will fill you up and eliminate thoughts of unnecessary hunger. To help yourself stay on the path that keeps you feeling energized, you’ll want to avoid drinking soft drinks and caffeine. Although tasty, sugar and caffeine depletes the water that is currently in your body and plays havoc with your blood sugar. EAT PROPERLY Society has become a nation of energy–deprived overeaters and people obsessed with their weight. The good news is that most people don’t have to eat less to reach and maintain a healthy weight - they just need to eat more consciously. Did you ever notice that junk food doesn’t fill you up? It works to ward off your appetite temporarily, yet before you know it, you’re hungry again. That’s because junk food has a low nutritional value, which means there’s not enough nutrients to keep your body energized. Nourish your body with foods rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and good fat including fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds! GET MOVING Our bodies are designed to move on a regular basis, exercising is not an option!

It is a necessity in order for our bodies to function optimally. However if you are in pain and are unable to exercise you will need to primarily address the root cause of your pain before you can engage in physical activity. Connection between your spine and energy levels A common cause of fatigue is a subluxated spine. “How can my spine make me tired?” you may ask. Here’s how: When there is a subluxation present in your spine, it affects your posture. It does so as it carries the weight of your head literally and figuratively forward off your shoulders. When the proper spinal alignment is off, the forward head carriage ads extra weight that inevitably slows you down and will exhaust you overtime. The best way to find out if you have subluxation, whether symptomatic or not is to get your spine examined by a Chiropractor, who specializes in the detection of subluxation. rally discover and produce new ideas. Then, by testing and experimenting with them, you will be able to refine them which may help you to flourish in today’s society.

The third step is get comments and feedback from trusted friends, co-workers, parents or classmates to do a personal SWOT analysis (360 degree evaluation method). The final step is writing a to-do list in order of priority as an Initial Action Plan. Write it in simple, executable and realistic terms. Some important

questions to ask are the following: 1. Where have I come from and where am I going? 2. What is my goal and why am I passionate about this? 3. Who can help me or who can I talk to? 4. How and when will I achieve my goal? Afterward, you can natu-

they had asked any good questions in class that day. Caring about their kids’ feeling in school is much more important than asking about their academic performance. Each life is unique and we must treat it as so by making it more dynamic and organic, stimulated by one’s imagination and capabilities. The second step to finding your children’s element is let them experiment and explore with different activities whether it be joining after school sporting events, music class or volunteering in different organizations. When parents arrange many extra-curricular activities for kids, they are forced to learn the importance of time management and to balance their schedule. Besides finding their interests, student can also learn punctuality, perseverance, and commitment. “Finding your element is about doing something that feels so completely natural to you, that resonates so strongly with you, that you feel that this is who you really are. Finding your element is finding your passion, your calling, work that truly fulfills you. It is vital to understanding yourself and your capabilities. Ken Robinson said.

very year, high school students are asked what they would like to major in or what career path they would like to embark on. In fact, I suggest to all parents to help their kids to try to answer the above questions as early as possible. In today’s article, I would like to focus on an important topic – helping kids’ find their element in order to innovate and strive in today’s society. For the first part, we will first look into the why and how. ‘Finding Your Element: How to Discover Your Talents and Passions and Transform Your Life’ is a new book written by the most-watched speaker on TED.com, Sir Ken Robinson. He is an author, educator and creativity expert, who advocates for diversity in curriculums, local input into education strategies and moving successful aspects of “alternative education programs into the mainstream program. In his report to the Secretary of State for Education and Employment – All Our Future : Creativity, culture and Education, Ken emphasizes that to prepare successfully for

the twenty-first century, literacy and numeracy skills alone are not sufficient. What is needed is a broad, flexible and motivating education that recognizes and unlocks the talents of all children and delivers excellence for every young person. The reason why you need to find your element is for survival purposes. It has been predicted that 65 % of jobs of the future are still non-existent and will be created by this young student generation. M type society and 99% versus 1% Wall Street movement both predict that 99% of young kids without rich parents have to strive to survive in the future. This survival is not simply about financially independent but also about psychological and social stability and happiness. Finding your element is a personal journey of selfdiscovery. As parents, how can you find your children’s element? The first step is by eating dinner together as a family. One book summarizes it very clearly where Jewish parents give many tips about properly communicating with kids. When kids come home from school, most Asian parents ask if they had had any tests or what their marks were. On the other hand, Jewish parents ask their kids if
