Montrealers demand snow clearing on canal bike path Craig Sauve talks to CBC 8

By John Symon mtltimes.ca

S

ome thirty bike advocates turned out on Friday morning near Atwater Market to demand that Montreal's Lachine Canal bike path be cleared of snow in winter. They were joined by elected officials including Southwest borough mayor Benoît Dorais, together with opposition city councillors Craig Sauvé and Marianne Giguère. The group called on Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre to work together on ensuring that the bike path remains open year-round. The 14.5kmLachine Canal bike path is on federal land but responsibility for clearing the snow would fall to four boroughs of Montreal: Lachine, LaSalle, Southwest, and Ville Marie (downtown). Dan Lambert finishes interview w CBC

"Minister McKenna, who is in charge of Parks Canada, said last spring that what is possible will be done so that everyone can ride the bike path" said Renaud Gignac, one of the co-organizers of Friday's event. He adds that "the Southwest borough has unblocked a budget of $100,000 for snow clearing this winter. The City of Montreal and Parks Canada have only to agree on the technical details to clear the bike path this winter!" A "pellete-in" is a gathering of cyclists who demand that a cycling facility remain accessible in winter. To do this, volunteers symbolically clear a stretch of bike path. Montréal has regularly been the theatre of such "Pelletein"s since the 1970s with Le Monde à Bicyclette and Robert “Bicycle Bob” Silverman. TV host and lecturer Yvan Martineau was there; he uses his bike all year round, snow or not. Martineau wonders why "at a time when (governments) are telling people it's important to be active and keep fit, how is it that this bike path--a direct link for workers to downtown--is not yet cleared while demand has been there for a long time?" 6

“We have been working hard on this since January, trying to get government officials to clear this bike path,” said Dan Lambert of the Montreal Bike Coalition. His sentiments were echoed by Jonathan Théorêt of the environmental group, GRAME. Théorêt thought he had obtained assurances from local governments on this in 2014. The Lachine Canal bike path, which dates from 1978, is often considered the first bike path opened in Canada, with close to 1 million people using it each year from April 15 to Nov. 15. The bike path is also the only major bike link from Lachine to Old Montreal. Ongoing highway construction work with the Turcot project means years of constant traffic congestion between Lachine and downtown, but winter cyclists do not have the option of using the bike path. It is unclear if the bike path, or part of it, will be usable from February 8-10, 2017 when Montreal is hosting the fifth annual Winter Cycling Congress, supposedly a chance for the city to show-off how much importance it places on winter cycling.

How to sell a house that didn't sell

WEDNESDAY

December 14, 2016

MONTREAL - If your home has just come off the market and hasn't sold, don't be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn't Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period.

Don't risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Before you hire a realtor, know the right questions to ask to save you time and money. Industry experts have prepared a free special report called "How to Sell a House that Didn't Sell" which educates you on the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit www.sellmyexpiredlisting.ca Get your free special report NOW to make sure your home sells the next time you list it for sale.

uccess takes shape in many forms, especially on the streets of Montreal. Inspiration isn’t hard to find if we take a look at our neighbours. One neighbour in particular has been extra busy sharing her passion with both readers and viewers: Anne-Lovely Etienne, one of our most admired television personalities, took the time to chat with us about her career. “I started as a radio researcher,” said Etienne. From this intern position, she worked her way up the ladder to become a trusted source of information in our city. Her resume includes Radio X Montreal, live television time alongside Marie-Claude Savard and Benoit Gagnon, as well as Journal de Montreal, and Global Montreal. Global Montreal is one of her newer feats—an exciting one as Etienne breaks into the English market with her television beauty segments. Her columns and television segments focus on lifestyle topics in and around our city. WEDNESDAY

One of the things that makes Anne-Lovely so lovable is the genuine emotion she shows through all of her work, towards all of the people she meets, and back at all of her fans. “People should know about my human side,” she said. “People should know more about me than just lifestyle.” When she began working with Journal de Montreal, Etienne was a hard news reporter. “People would come up to me and open their hearts to me. They would tell me their stories.” Etienne hopes to experience

these types of genuine connections, regardless of what type of news she reports. “I love people. That’s very true.” Etienne takes the time to appreciate her readers and viewers. She listens to content suggestions, stories, and all around soaks in the support. “If no one read me, or watched me on TV, there would be no Anne-Lovely,” she said. “When someone recognizes me, I take the time.” It’s the beautiful and diverse people of Montreal that inspire her daily.

The restaurant, for starters, serves 5-star Canadian cuisine. It is called feast + revel for good reason. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner—guests are tempted to dine here all day! The space is refreshing, and the food will reenergize you after a long day of exploring. After dinner, guests head to the rooftop lounge, Copper Spirits & Sights, for cocktails with a view. The view from the lounge on the top floor is among the best in the city. It boasts the highest elevation of any rooftop bar in the city—that’s for sure. After shopping, exploring, wining, and dining, guests retire to their rooms. Modern, yet eclectic is the best way to describe this experience. Local artwork complements sleek furnishings. Enjoy comfortable linens and large windows that open into beautiful urban views. Did we mention that pets are accepted? That’s right, you can bring your pooch with you on vacation. All of the guest rooms are made to seem like home, but better. The staff in every area of the hotel pay attention to the little details that set your mini getaway aside from the rest. Luxury service is what they do best: in the restaurants, at the front desk, or in passing around the hotel. They are always willing to lend a hand. Guests forget that they’re only a few hours from home, although it seems like paradise. Are you travelling for business? Even though Andaz is built to make you feel at home, they www.mtltimes.ca

know how to accommodate for work as well. Six rooms create 4,500 square feet of available meeting space. An onsite event planner will help guests through every stage of the planning process. Available built-in benefits include tech equipment and catering. Hotel Andaz also hosts weddings and other personal functions. The space is flooded with natural light, and hosts up to 150 guests. Their event planner can organize appropriate décor, transportation for your guests, the food menu, and seating. If lots of guests are coming from out of town, they can block off nearby rooms so everyone can stick close throughout their stay. For guests who want to experience all that is Ottawa, Hotel Andaz’s location in Byward Market is a great home base. Art galleries and museums, local shops and eateries, music and entertainment that continues into the night— just let the hotel staff know what you are looking for, and they can point you in the right direction. Most of these attractions are within walking distance, so guests don’t have to worry about the stresses of driving in a new city. Whatever the occasion that brings to you Canada’s capital, Hotel Andaz will host, meet, and exceed your needs.
