he 9th edition of the ALS Society of Quebec’s Ride to Fight ALS cycling challenge was an historic success, in terms of both number of participants and money raised. From August 26 to 28, 200 cyclists rode through the streets of Vaudreuil-Dorion and surroundings to support families touched by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to fund research into the disease. The Ride’s three events—the 3-day challenge, the 1-day challenge, and the Evening of Dreams benefit dinner—raised a combined total of over $430,000 for the cause, a record amount since the event was first held in 2008! The World Film Festival doesn't surrender

F

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

or reasons that for most people now seem arcane, both federal and provincial bureaucrats together with some members of the media have been keen on trying to kill the World Film Festival (WFF). The preferred target of the attackers is Serge Losique of course, founder and president of this event which just held its 40th edition, accused of running the festival in a despotic way. Beyond the personal animosities that some people in the movie milieu may have against Losique, it is unfortunate that what was supposed to be an emblematic anniversary for the WFF was plagued by all kind of problems: from the sudden resignation of its employees, just days before the beginning of the event, to the uncertainty regarding the venues for the screenings. Lack of funds was at the root of these troubles: as everyone knows, here in Canada, no large cultural activity could be staged without government support. Festivals that take place in our city benefit from direct funding from the three levels of govern-

ment. Not the WFF, the two agencies that are supposed to support film festivals, Telefilm Canada—federal—and Sodec—provincial— stopped funding the WFF in 2014. Sodec is even after the WFF for the payback of a loan that it claims to have given to its organizers some years ago. Some members of the media have also staged their own personal war against the WFF: The Gazette's Brendan Kelly wrote a piece containing a vicious attack on Losique just a few days before the start of the festival; T'Cha Dunlevy, another writer with the daily English paper, reported on the closing day of the festival in a very negative manner. I would say, even with some bad faith. While

mentioning that an Austrian director wore a Tshirt with an insult to the embattled festival president, on the other hand, he ignored the many more public expressions of support for Losique and the WFF from directors such as Nic Balthazar, David Franklin, and André Forcier. Moreover, although Losique and the WFF might not be liked by some journalists and government bureaucrats, the truth is that the public gave ample support to the event. And this is not only a greying crowd as Kelly wrote in his attack—but also young people especially from ethnic communities such as the Chinese, Latino, and Asian communities in Montreal. If the people of Montreal are saying that they like the WFF then why Telefilm

Canada and Sodec are contradicting that widespread support by withholding public funds? What authority do these bureaucrats have to challenge the people's wishes? But let's leave these bothersome issues aside and focus on what really matters: the movies. This Monday, Sept. 5 the names of the WFF winners were announced: the Grand Prix des Amériques (1st prize) went to the CzechCroatian-Slovakian-Macedonian co-production "The Constitution" directed by Rajko Grlic a

The prize for Best Script was for Rüzgarda Salinan Nilüfer for "Swaying Waterlily" (Turkey); Best Artistic Contribution prize was awarded to Yoshinari Nishikori for his film "Tatara Samurai" (Japan), and the Innovation prize went to André Forcier for "Kiss me Like a Lover" (Canada). continued on Page 11

What is the deal with all the different milk? By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

‘Got Milk?’ is a popular and successful American advertising campaign running since 1993 to encourage the consumption of milk. It features celebrities, actors and musicians sporting the ‘milk-mustache’ many people get when they drink a glass of the bovine dairy product. It is sold in 2 liter, 1 liter, 500 mL or 250 mL cartons, as well as 4 liter, 1 liter, 250 mL and 500 mL plastic jugs and in 1.33 liter plastic bags. It is available as whole milk with 3.25% fat or reduced-fat milk with 2% fat. There is also 1% low fat milk and even 0% fat-free skim milk. There is milk available with added vitamins and minerals, lactose free milk and my personal favorite - chocolate milk. Don’t forget the 5%, 10% and 35% creams and what about ‘buttermilk’? Does Eggnog count? Then there is milk from beyond the familiar dairy cow such as buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, donkey, reindeer and even yak. The term milk is also used for non-animal beverages resembling milk in color and texture such as soy milk, rice milk, almond milk and coconut milk - all fortified to meet the same nutritional ingredients except for protein. But for this article we’ll focus on the bovine kind. There are billions of consumers of milk and milk products worldwide. It is touted as an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and has long been recognized for its important role in bone health. Today’s milk is pasteurized to kill harmful microorganisms. The process produces a 99.99% reduction in the number of bacteria in milk, rendering it safe to drink for up to three weeks if continually refrigerated. But there is also a lot of controversy surround-

• September 10, 2016

ing milk - from health concerns to the ethical concerns of vegans and animal rights activists. Let’s go back in history for a moment. Human beings are first introduced to milk as infants at the breasts of their mothers the main source of nourishment during the first few years of the child’s life. Once the child reached about 4 or 5 years old, the child’s body began to slow its production of lactase, the enzyme that allows mammals to digest the lactose in milk. At the end of the stage of infancy, they became lactose-intolerant for life. Then according to Mark Thomas, an evolutionary geneticist at University College London, sometime around 10,000 B.C. this all changed. A genetic mutation appeared, somewhere near modernday Turkey, which jammed the lactase-production gene permanently in the “on” position. People carrying the mutation could drink milk their entire lives. Within a few thousand years, this mutation spread throughout most of the world. The speed of this transformation is an unsolved mystery in the story of human evolution. Still today, around twothirds of humans become

lactose intolerant in adulthood to some degree. Lactose is a type of carbohydrate or sugar that naturally occurs in milk from any mammal, including humans. Normally, an enzyme in the small intestine called Lactase breaks down lactose so it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Some people don’t produce enough lactase and undigested lactose is broken up by the bacteria in their large intestine causing gas, bloating, pain and diarrhea. This condition is called ‘lactose intolerance’. You can be born lactose intolerant or develop it later in life. Options exist today in the form of Lactose-Free milk or the soy, rice and almond ‘pseudo’ milks. Health Canada and many nutritionists recommend that milk and other dairy products should be consumed daily as part of a balanced diet. Milk products contain a good balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate and are a very important source of essential nutrients including; Calcium, Riboflavin, Phosphorous, Vitamins A, D and B12 and Pantothenic acid. Milk products also contain ‘high quality proteins’ that are well suited to human

needs. Milk proteins increase the value of poorer quality cereal and vegetable proteins in the diet by providing the amino acids these proteins lack. Studies also indicate that an inadequate intake of calcium may lead to disorders like osteoporosis if milk and milk products are removed from the diet - a particular concern for women and the elderly, who have high calcium needs. Other studies have found that people who regularly eat dairy products have a reduced risk of developing colon cancer. Research in the US found that a high intake of fruits and vegetables, combined with low-fat dairy foods, will lower blood pressure more than fruits and vegetables alone. But there are also recent studies which are contradictory, suggesting milk consumption may increase the risk of suffering from certain health problems. Many people believe that nasal stuffiness and the production of mucous is exacerbated by the consumption of milk and other dairy products. Scientists say there is no scientific basis to this theory, that milk does not encourage extra mucous production. But many

www.mtltimes.ca

question if there are studies proving that it indeed does not. Ask anyone with a cold if they instinctively crave a glass of milk when they are sick - chances are they will tell you they do not. There are thousands of people who can attest to dramatically reduced mucous production when they cut milk out while they are sick. They can’t all be wrong. Perhaps the connection is just a little more indirect. One study demonstrated that men who drink a large amount of milk and consume dairy products were at a slightly increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. A review published by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research states that at least eleven human population studies have linked excessive dairy product consumption and prostate cancer. Medical studies also have shown a possible link between milk consumption and the exacerbation of diseases such as Crohn’s Disease. And last but not least are the ethical concerns. Humans can derive the same nutrients found in milk from many other food items and meet all their daily needs without

the need of any dairy products. But for some that could mean a lot of beans and broccoli on a daily basis - beyond one’s taste and ability to consume. Vegans and most vegetarians do not consume milk for reasons mostly related to animal rights. They passionately object to dairy farming, citing the conditions for the animals abusive and horrific. On the PETA website (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) they explain that cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do to nourish their young. Calves are generally taken from their mothers within a day of being born. Males are destined for veal crates or barren lots where they will be fattened for beef and females are sentenced to the same fate as their mothers. After their calves are taken away from them, mother cows are hooked up, several times a day, to milking machines. These cows are genetically manipulated, artificially inseminated and often drugged to force them to produce about four and a half times as much milk as they naturally would to feed their calves. Hardly the incentive to run out for that block of cheese. I might choose a non-dairy sorbet over a double chocolate ice cream next time, but I’m not ready to stop putting cream in my coffee or enjoying an afternoon latte. Not cold turkey anyhow. ‘Got Milk?’ but do you really ‘Want Milk?’ or ‘Need Milk’? - these are questions a lot of people are asking. Would you opt for one of the ‘pseudo’ milks instead? Have you used any of these products as a replacement for milk in recipes? The taste results? Or are you a proud dairy consumer, satisfied with the knowledge imparted by our scientific community?

Very often, family members can feel guilty about placing loved ones into a senior residence. The reality is that a move will most likely be for the best. See ad page 28

he Fritz Farm Youth Gardening Program (FFYGP) gives freshly grown produce to local food banks. Just this week they delivered more than ten boxes filled with tomatoes, beans, and peppers, all grown at Fritz Farm in Baie D'Urfé, to On Rock Community Services. The volunteer philosophy has always been notable in the Town of Baie D'Urfé.This relatively new program where youth grow food and pay it forward to those in need in the community goes hand in hand with the Town's need to give back. In recent years FFYGP has helped community organizations such as West Island Volunteer Bureau, Meals on Wheels, On Rock Community Services, West Island Mission, St. Columba by the Lake Food Ministry and West Island Assistance Fund. "One of the biggest challenges is getting fresh produce. You can't get much fresher than grown in the West Island," explained On Rock's President Kim Reid."On Rock, Baie D'Urfé, Rhonda Massad, Maria Tutino, West Island Blog, According to proud Baie D'Urfé Mayor Maria

Tutino, over the last ten years, Baie D'Urfé volunteer groups have extended their generosity beyond the Town’s borders. The Town’s Rescue Squad has been involved internationally in assisting with both the Haitian and Syrian relocation efforts. "Just three years into their creation, the Fritz Farm Youth Gardening Program is making their presence felt across the metropolitan region as a major provider of free healthy, home-grown produce for people in need," Tutino stated. The organization's mission is to teach youth about growing their food, responsibility, social values and to reconnect them and their families to the source of the food they eat in a world of supermarkets, international food transport and heavily

industrialized farming practices. They also hope to continue to provide fresh, locally grown produce to organizations that are in need of such food. "It is always encouraging when local community groups contribute in such amazing ways," Reid said. "I sometimes wonder if they really understand the difference they make in the lives of those who receive their good." "It is heartwarming that Baie-D’Urfe citizens are recognized as making a difference in people’s life," Tutino said. "As Mayor, I cannot be anything but proud of the hard work and generosity of the FFYGP volunteers."

American Heiress by Jeffrey Toobin

T

18

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

(Doubleday, $38.95)

he kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patricia “Patty” Hearst was one of the most notorious – and most reported – crimes of the 1970s. From her kidnapping at her San Francisco home at the hands of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), to her transformation as “Tania” (and her machine-gun toting photo that is one of the most iconic images of that decade), to the Hibernia Bank robbery, to eventual capture in September of 1975 and subsequent sentence commutation and pardon, Patty Hearst and her abduction has come to symbolize the upheaval that dominated America during the early and mid70s, as well making her the unofficial poster child for “Stockholm Syndrome” (when a kidnapping victim develops a sense of affection and sympathy for their kidnappers). But throughout her 18month ordeal at the hands of the SLA, the main question that is brought up regarding the Patty Hearst kidnapping is this: was Hearst a willing convert and participant in the SLA’s violent string of crimes, or was she forced and coerced to commit these crimes under the fear that her life was in constant danger? Jeffrey Toobin, the CNN legal analyst whose book The Run of His life is regarded s the definitive account of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, answers this question to good effect with his latest book American Heiress. Basically, Toobin effectively argues that it was a bit of both circumstances that ruled Patty Hearst while she was in captivity. First, he believes that Hearst quickly became indoctrinated and influenced to what the SLA stood for – in creating a violent revolution against the establishment in California – as a means of rebellion against her life of privilege as the granddaughter of famed newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst; basically, she felt her life with her parents (especially with her overbearing mother Catherine), and

www.mtltimes.ca

her upcoming engagement to university teacher Steven Weed was a sham and would have led to a life of drudgery and servitude to Weed (and admitted that she even contemplated suicide before the kidnapping took place). Second, that the Hearsts would agree to the demands of the SLA for her eventual release (which was in the form of a food giveaway to the underprivileged of San Francisco), because Patty was constantly living under the threat of death,

(and that William Randolph Hearst distrusted his sons so much, he willed that his newspaper and media empires were not to be run by them); and we find out what really went on during the period between the fiery, violent deaths of six SLA members in May of 1974 and Hearst’s arrest in September of 1975 (which involved travelling from one end of the U.S. to the other, and hiding in Pennsylvania and California, as Hearst was gearing her way of thinking from revolutionary to feminist); and how the ego of her lawyer F. Lee Bailey practically derailed her case when it went to trial in 1976 and ended up in a guilty conviction and a prison term. American Heiress is a compelling, well-researched book that serves as a prime example of how the ideal true crime book should be Patty Hearst written. Coin Collecting - Is that a devils face in the Queens Hair?

A

By Michael Joffre mtltimes.ca

lot of customers ask us how to tell the difference between the regular 1954 series notes, and the famous “devil’s face” ones.

In 1952 George VI passed away. When Elizabeth became Queen, it was decided to issue a new series of notes from $1 to $1,000 ($1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $1,000). In the previous issue of her father, the portraits were placed in the center, and were therefore worn quickly when people folded notes in half, so it was decided to put her portrait on the right

hand side. The original portrait of the queen for the notes was copied from an official photograph. Unfortunately, the curls in the right hand side of her head seem to appear as two eyes, a hooked nose, and a mouth. This is popularly called the “devil’s face” variety.

When this was discovered by the general public many urban myths were created, including one that the picture was altered by an IRA sympathizer. This of course is not true. In 1956 most denominations were modified with a new similar portrait, but with changes in the hair. So almost all “devils face” notes were only produced for a couple of years, and most

were not saved until they had been used. This accounts for their relative scarcity, and higher value in new condition. It is important to understand that until recently the dates on our paper money were never changed until a new type of note was issued. Therefore, the issue of Queen Elizabeth’s father George VI were all dated 1937, but issued from 1937 to 1953. Likewise, the 1954 “series” was all dated 1954, but issued

from 1954 until the various notes were changed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Almost all 1954 dated notes are later modified types, and not devils face. So, how can we tell the difference? The first and easiest way is to look at the two signatures on the bottom of the notes. The devil’s face notes are all signed either “Coyne Towers” (all Coyne Towers notes are Devils Face), and “Beattie Coyne” (not every one of this signature combination are DF).

Any other signature variety is NOT a devils face note. Of course the quick way is to know what the hair looks like. Having a picture, or better yet, another note to compare with is best. How much are these interesting devil’s face notes worth? As always with collectables the condition will make the price. Used bills are usually in the $10 to $50 range depending on variety, denomination and condition. The very best quality examples sell in the hundreds of

dollars and more…and of course if you have any for sale we would love to hear from you! Michael Joffre is President of Carsley Whetstone & Company Inc. Since 1928 Carsleys has been buying and selling rare coins and related collectables. They are always interested in purchasing quality collections of older coins. Timeless Tamanu Sponsored

A

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

while back I wrote a blog called ‘Tireless Tamanu’ which you may wish to peruse on our website. It discloses the source, the sustainability and the certification of our Tamanu Oil. It talks about the incredible journey of the tamanu seed by the South Pacific waves, where the seed roots and how the nut oil is so amazing on the skin. The article will remind you to always look for dark green, high quality, organic oil and to beware of scam versions now entering the market. I have been researching and selling Tamanu for several years now and it has become one of my favourite skin nutrients.Your testimonials have helped to prove that. The title ‘Tireless Tamanu’ evolved because the oil never stops amazing me. It is persistent in proving how nature never gives up astounding us with its miracles. But today, I am inspired to call this article ‘Timeless Tamanu’. Just last week I was serving a young woman at the CNE exhibition in Toronto. She was looking for natural acne skin care and seemed intrigued with the purity of our products. Her acne was not uncommon for her age but she did have some scarring that she was hoping to reduce. Of course. Through discussion, I learned that she was

using a medicated cream and a commercial soap that contained some questionable chemicals. I showed her our calming emu neem soap and pure unrefined emu oil. I explained that most liquid cleansers contained formaldehyde and sodium laurel sulfate. Not good. Medicated creams were not feeding her skin the goodness it needed. I sensed she was on a limited budget. I suggested that the pure emu oil and the soap were a good place to start her revitalizing skin journey. She explained, “When I came to this country, I was told my skin would suffer. It was never this way before.” I understood and confirmed that, “Yes, a change of climate and diet can definitely affect our skin. May I ask where you are from?” “Vietnam.” She said. I smiled. “I’d like to show you something.” I guided her to the tamanu oil display and showed her our new 20 ml bottle. “Our tamanu oil comes from your country,Vietnam. We are very proud of this source.” She looked pleased but puzzled. She did not know the oil. “Tamanu is a tree nut oil, “ I explained, “It is from the South Pacific islands, like Tahiti, Madagascar, Fiji. But it also comes from mainland coastal areas like Vietnam. We chose a sustainable, organic farm there, where we were able to obtain certification as to its quality.” I retrieved our sample tester. “You must try a

drop on your skin. It would be excellent for you. But if you cannot afford it now, the emu oil and the soap are still perfect. No worries. I just want you to experience something from home.” I placed a drop on her forearm and asked her to gently rub it into her skin and then to smell the unique, nutty aroma. Intense, but earthy. She did as directed. Instantly, her face shone in memory. ‘”This is my GRANDMA,” she exclaimed with a smile. “Ohhhh…when I was a little girl, and if I had an injury, or a cut, or a bruise, or anything, my Grandma wanted to rub this oil on me. I would tell her, ‘No Grandma, I am OK.’ She would persist, ‘No, No,Van, you must apply this oil. It will make you better.’ I remember this smell. This is my Grandma.” Smells, scents, memories. In Van’s case, a positive hug from the past. Timeless. (Our website shares all of the cosmetic properties of Tamanu oil, under Tamanu Head to Toe. (http://www.natural.ca/en/tamanuhead-toe ) In addition to the pure oil we also make a tamanu cream, a soap and body oil )
