D

uring the last 100 years, the holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah have fallen on the same day only four times, the last being in 1959. This year will be the fifth. Christmas has always been celebrated on December 25th since 336AD, when Pope Julius I officially declared the date. Hanukkah on the other hand, was first celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev in 138BC. The Jewish 'luni-solar' calendar is based on lunar months and solar years - therefore the date is different from year to

year, but both holiday celebrations always start when the sun goes down on the eve before.

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

St

This year Christmas Eve and the first night of Hanukkah coincide -

and the two holidays are united in more ways than one. T h e most significant being they both celebrate miracles. The first celebratory 'feasts' of both holidays originated in Jerusalem and both are actual historical events. Christmas commemorates the miracle of the birth of Jesus Christ, born Jewish and who first became a preacher. He spread the word of love, miraculously healed the sick and many followers saw him as the 'Messiah' prophesied in the Old Testament. In the end Jesus

lies

performed the ultimate sacrifice, dying on the cross to atone for all mankind's sins. He was then recognized and revered as the 'Redeemer' - and as the Son of God of Christianity. Hanukkah commemorates the Miracle of Light, when in ancient Judea, known also as the Land of Israel, the ruthless soldiers of Antiochus IV 'Epiphanes' attacked the Jewish people - massacring thousands and also desecrating the city’s holy Second Temple by erecting an altar to Zeus and sacrificing pigs within its sacred walls. Led by Judas Maccabeus around 165 BC, the Jewish people fought them off - and then began the task of restoring the temple. At the time of the

temple's rededication there was very little oil that was not left tainted and impure by the soldiers. Oil was needed for the seven branched candelabrum in the Temple, which was supposed to burn from evening until morning 7 days a week, but there was only enough oil to burn for one night, yet miraculously it burned for eight days - the time needed to sanctify some fresh oil. Today a nine branched 'menorah' is lit with candles, eight representing the eight nights when the oil miraculously burned - the ninth is used to light them each evening. Hanukkah celebrates the Miracle of Light, not the victory over Antiochus' army. Light is at the heart of both holidays. Christmas also cele-

brates light. For hundreds of years Christmas trees were lit up by candles. Jesus is the 'spiritual light' to Christians around the world - and was born under the Star of Bethlehem, a bright light appearing in the sky above, guiding the 'Three Wise Men' with their gifts in hand to him. Fast forward to the year 2016. The traditional Christmas tree is now lit up with electric lights, homes are decorated outside with miles of stringed LED bulbs in every color and configuration imaginable. The Three Wise Men now appear as decorative tree ornaments or in nativity scenes played out by actors and as sculptures in indoor/outdoor sets.

How to sell a house that didn't sell

MONTREAL - If your home has just come off the market and hasn't sold, don't be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn't Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period.

How do you feel about legalizing marijuana?

O

ttawa announced it will release a report on legalizing and regulating marijuana this week, Marc Emery, known as the 'Prince of Pot' and who has been at the forefront Canada's marijuana activism for years - has announced he is bringing his chain of 'Cannabis Culture' dispensaries to Montreal. Sources say his intention is to open as many as three dispensaries in the Plateau-Mont-Royal area this week. His illegal chain of dispensaries will not only make pot available to people with a legal prescription for medical marijuana, but will be open to recreational users over 19 years old. Based in BC, he has dispensaries in Vancouver but has been expanding his business this year with locations in Port Coquitlam, B.C., Hamilton and Toronto - which were raided by police this year,

• December 17, 2016

but most have already reopened. Emery has been arrested 28 times for cannabis-related offences. He also served a five-year prison sentence in the United States for selling marijuana seeds online.

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

“I am merely the most notable Canadian cannabis prisoner of the drug war… but hundreds of thousands of Canadians have experienced the trauma of arrest, stigma and suffering under Canada’s three-genera-

tion reign of cannabis prohibition,” Emery wrote in an article for The Georgia Straight newspaper last year. Well, Montreal police will certainly be taking notice… Interestingly enough, as the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation are about to release their report, Health Canada statistics reveal a huge increase in the number of Canadians who use marijuana to get relief from everything from chronic pain to nausea from chemotherapy. The number of Canadians legally signed up to buy medical marijuana has more than tripled in the last year. But for now it remains illegal for recreational purposes. How do you feel about this? Is Emery crossing the line - or just ahead of his time? info@mtltimes.ca

Montreal Lights Up: a preview of a year of celebration

bout 100 artists were present on a show aired by Radio-Canada, TVA, Télé-Québec and V television to give their audience a preview of the celebrations planned for next year on the occasion of the 375th anniversary of Montreal. It was rebroadcasted on CBC and CTV too. The show started with a note of humour while trying to look for some Great Montrealers just to realize that some of the names mentioned: René Levesque, Justin Trudeau, and even our Mayor Denis Coderre, were all born somewhere else. That also made the point they were seeking: Montreal as a place where many people—not only from outside the city, the province, or even the country— have arrived and settled, this is a welcoming city after all. Among the artists performing or being presented by clips were Beatrice Martin, Ian Kelly, Marie Desrochers, the Boulay Sisters, Random Recipe, Jean-Louis Cormier and Marie-Mai with some romantic tunes, and Yvon Deschamps. Iconic stars such as Céline Dion, Leonard Cohen and Diane

Dufresne were also shown, though in brief clips. The audience was also reminded that there are about one hundred songs inspired by Montreal.

L'Ecuyer was in charge of bringing some laughs at the expense of, well, Montreal itself when acting as a tourist guide he announced a new tour that would show all the ubiquitous orange cones around the many roads under construction or repair in the city. The 375th-anniversary celebrations have been launched with Aurores Montréal, an event that will last until January 1, 2017. Snowmobiles doing daring tricks downtown

A

new addition to the winter festivities marking Montreal's 375th anniversary was announced this Wednesday: Motoneige MTL Xtrem, an event that will be part of the Hivernales, the winter festivities with which the year-long celebration will kick off this coming January. To the amazement of the journalists present at the demonstration two members of the Tribu Expérientiel—the group producing those extraordinary performances— jumped more than 10 meters in the air with the assistance of two specially-designed ramps. They also performed some even more dangerous stunts, including a back flip. The performances for the press were just a preview of what people should expect on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 when 10 of the most recognized snowmobiling champions will be present at a specially-conditioned area on Union St. up to Philips Sq. "Tribu Expérientiel is a true ambassador of urban adrenaline and unique sporting events. With this show, we're bringing the mountain spirit to the city because snowmobiling is a symbol of our Québécois

identity," said Micah Desforges, President and Founder of Tribu Expérientiel and producer of the

Barbegazi winter action sports festival. For his part, Serge Postigo, Assistant Commissioner for Montreal's 375-anniversary celebration said: "What an amazing opportunity to show how we make the best of

winter with a typically Québécois invention. There's nothing like an electrifying demonstration in the heart of downtown to celebrate our urban and northern character." On behalf of the Quebec government and the Minister of Municipal Affairs, D'Arcy-McGee MNA David Birnbaum was also at the show and in his speech he indicated that these activities "celebrate not only where we live, but how we live winter, and Montreal's signature creativity." These freestyle snowmobile demonstrations scheduled for February is one of the many free activities planned to make Montrealers full participants of the 375th-anniversary celebrations. For more information about the whole range of activities visit: www.375mtl.com

Menorahs can now also be found lit up electrically, placed in the windows of homes or even outside in larger-thanlife sizes. In medieval times, games such as knucklebones (modern day jacks), cards and the tossing of dice were played during Christmas. Some of the games are still played today, but have given way to electronic game devices. During Hanukkah a game dating back centuries uses a Dreidel, a four sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. The four letters NGHS represent the phrase 'Nes Gadol Hayah Sham' which means 'a great miracle happened there' - but it also competes with the lure of electronic games. Leading up to the festivities, children of both faiths take to the stage in theatrical plays, reenacting the original events of Christmas and Hanukkah. 'Stars' align in Nativity and

Temples scenes in auditoriums everywhere and camera toting parents are filled with pride. There is also the religious aspect of both holidays, underlined in holy prayers or personal meditations. During Christmas a special Midnight Mass service is held in churches - and although Hanukkah is not the most religious holiday on the Jewish calendar, there is an extra reading from the Torah with additional observances added to services in synagogues. But the most important message for both, is love and hope under one spiritual light - a light shared by every religion and faith in the world. As the holidays unite this year in miracles, may we embody the message of 'peace and good-will among human beings'… and may we all become the miracle. A very merry 'Chrismukkah' and a Happy 'Hanukkamas' to all!

But there is the mythical Santa Claus who travels, albeit not through desert sands but through a starlit sky, laden with gifts for all. Families and friends still gather in warmth and love to celebrate and enjoy a holiday meal together. Hanukkah is also a time when families and friends gather to share a holiday meal, but instead of stuffed turkey or glazed ham at the top of the menu, there are potato latkes fried in oil - symbolic of the oil that lasted eight days. 'Sufganiyot', deep fried doughnuts filled with jelly and sprinkled with sugar is served instead of Christmas cookies or figgy pudding. There might not be any eggnog on a Hanukkah table, but I assure you other bottled spirits flow. Gifts are also shared, mostly given to children from their parents or grandparents over the eight days of the holiday.

round this time of year, eating and drinking a little too much seems like a holiday tradition, but going too wild can make it difficult to get back on track in January. Here, Genevieve Ledoux, registered dietitian at Provigo Le Marché Kirkland, shares her top four tips to survive your next holiday party without falling off the food wagon. 1. Try to go easy on the high-fat foods. Pastries, pies, sausages, and creambased soups or sides are delicious, but they're often high in calories or fat. Given the choice, leaner meats like turkey or chicken are good alternatives to red meat. If you're doing the cooking, you can also make some simple ingredient swaps like low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream, and flour combined with skim milk instead of cream. 2. Make smart beverage choices. Try to alternate between one alcoholic drink and one glass of water. Drinking water prevents dehydration

Pochiche Falafel and Salads Chickpea dreams brought to life

t’s never too late to pursue a dream you have a passion for. After dedicating a long career in marketing and advertising, new restaurant owner, Michel Massoud, finally decided it was time to share his talent and passion for delicious and healthy Mediterranean inspired food and fair. Pochiche Falafel and Salads is the new all vegan restaurant in the heart of Montreal West. The newly-redesigned space, formally an Avenue Video for many years, has had a complete makeover and is now is a beautiful, bright, open space to enjoy a quick bite, take out, or lunch meeting. A background in advertising and marketing goes a long way for owner Michel, beginning with the clever name he came up with one evening, Pochiche, which is a french play on words for “pois chiche" which means chickpea in english. Keeping up with trends, Pochiche’s marketing and ads, displayed in the restaurant and, on the

When we arrived, we were greeted right away by the owner’s son Gabriel , who also helps out at the restaurant daily. Michel was also on hand preparing falafel in the Kitchen. We sat down at one of the many comfortable booths as we waiting for our order, which was almost just as quick as any take-out restaurant, except here, everything is made to order. Our food was hot, fresh and made with attention and care. My guest and I decided to share a falafel salad and a falafel pita. Instead of ordering a side of fries, we were intrigued to try the “Putty Butty”, which is a pita stuffed with french fries, coleslaw, and vegan mayonnaise. The salad was a very generous portion with 4 large falafel ball, mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions, drizzled with a tahini dressing and

busting-out-the-crustycorners pies? Tourtieres, chicken and pot pies, syrupy fruit pies, sugar pies. In history, that food group may just be the most glorious kitchen creation in gastronomy. According to food historians (yes, that is a job; yes, you should totally grow up to be one), pies date all the way back to ancient Egypt. But the real pie masterminds—the By Marco Giovanetti ones who made it a new art form, realizing all the mtltimes.ca curiously fun things you hat says can stuff in a giant pot of C h r i s t m a s dough—were the meSeason more dieval British. when pies could be as big as tables, when they were stuffed with live things, when the whole point of a pie was to provide your dinner and your entertainment all in one go. Bakens, ovens were just giant, covered fire pits. Any baking container you put inside would melt or explode. So instead of baking in pots and pans, people just baked in massive bowls of thick, hard pastry. These were made of flour, water, and lard, so heavy you could mold it like plasticine dough, and several inches thick to hold over a blazing fire. Pie crusts were evil— eating one was like swal-

lowing down on a piece of thick gravy-concrete. Foodies of those times just ate the fillings of the pie, and left the crust for the miserables to soak in water or beer and morosely slurp down like cement pudding. The Renaissance brought refined pastry techniques, ending those brutal cooking days. But today, we celebrate those brilliant medievalists cooks by baking a decadent meat pie with traditional, medieval spices. You can bake it in a big pie dish to serve in luscious, meaty slabs, or pop a bunch in a muffin pan to make rather adorable (and oh-so-portable) mini-pies. Bring them to lunch, parties, or just your very lucky dinner table. Tourtiere can be served with either whites, sparkling or reds, but I prefer light reds to go with them. Try pairing meat pies with light to medium-bodied reds and wines that are fruity like a Beaujolais or a Pinot Noir. Fuller-bodied Côtes du Rhône is a pairs also well. Stay a from pairing any heavy, rich, earthy wine that will beat up the subtle flavors that come from the blend of beef, pork, and veal with the spices in this pie. Sparkling wine of the week:

Grande Cuvée 1531 De Aimery, Crémant De Limoux. Sieur D'Arques. LCBO # 428086. $17.40 One of the French Sparkling Bargains at the LCBO. This Crémant de Limoux comes from the oldest sparkling wine region in the world which

continues to produce these amazingly flavoursome, yet affordable sparkling wines. The Sieur d'Arques Aimery Grand Cuvée 1531 is a multiple award winner, picking up no less that 8 gold medals over the past couple of years. Aimery Sieur d'Arques was founded in 1946 and is one of the largest wine producers in the Languedoc region. The history of this winery begins in 1531, for a century before Dom Pérignon champagne invented a method for the production of sparkling wine, the Benedictine nuns of the Order created the world's first sparkling wine. For the first time, this wine is mentioned in the 16th century, when the lord of Arc, the owner of the land in Lima, saw this sparkling wine. Languedoc winemakers decided to call their winery Emery Sieur d'Arc in the memory of this historic moment. Lemon in colour, medium sized and persistent bubbles is apparent in the glass. Aromatically, the wine brings to mind apples, brioche with lemon sorbet and honey. On the palate, the wine is dry with a good acidity and a elegant mouse.Flavours bring to mind minerals and honey with an excellent length Two digest French reds for your Tourtiere: The Gamay grape makes uncomplicated, easily drinkable, light bodied, light-colored red wines. It is also capable of producing richly hued, rather tannic, complex and ageworthy wines. It’s a vinifera chameleon. Many Gamay-based wines are highly drinkable when young, although Gamay is capable of producing ageworthy wines. The Beaujolais Crus such as Chénas are all good examples of age worthy Gamay. Cabernet Franc blends pair well with grilled steaks and chops and other meat based dishes. In addition veggies such as portobello mushrooms and green olives.Lighter

versions of 100% Cabernet Franc (look for a lighter pink color) will pair well with chicken, white fish, and quiche. Cabernet Franc likely originated in Basque country – where Northern Spain and Southwestern France meet along the coast of the Bay of Biscay. From there, it spread to Bordeaux and the Loire Valley.

Two Scotch whiskies to discover With the arrival of winter, this is the perfect season to appreciate and enjoy a good spirit such as Rum or Scotch. Like wine, they present a world of possibilities to discover. I will be covering spirits on a regular basis as well for future columns in 2017. Recently I had the chance to taste two different and unique Scotch whiskies. Glenmorangie The Lasanta Scotch Single Malt ( 11573867, $82.50) is impressive and stunning. Aromas of blanched walnuts, jerez flor. WIth time in the glass notes of dry fruits, rancio with toffee caramel start to develop. Lovely madagascar vanilla bean nuances with pastry cream as well. mouth, polished and smooth and powerful in the mid palate. This whisky has aged 10 years in used bourbon barriques before continuing a 2 year additional aging in Sherry Oloroso barriques from Spain. Las-

anta means soft and passion in the gaelic dialect The other scotch whisky comes from the Ardbeg house, which makes the smokiest single malt in the world. Ardbeg also makes the most complex and balanced whisky in the world. In fact, they have won best whisky in the world 5 times, twice from Jim Murray, twice from the World Whisky Awards and once from Malt Advocate Magazine. The Ardbeg Distillery lies on the most southerly part of Islay and on the rugged shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Islay is a very old land. This is the place here Celtic monks found refuge from raiding Norsemen and early distillers smuggled their illicit 'aquavitae' at Ardbeg rocky cove. Islay whiskies are very

big on flavor; if you're looking for a light and delicate whisky, this is not the place for you. These Scotches are reputed for being extremely peaty a reference to the peat (basically dirt made from decaying vegetation) which covers a good chunk of the island. The peat nourishes the fires that roast the barley used in whisky production, and it gives the finished product a bold flavor that brings to mind a campfire by the sea: smoky, earthy, a little salty, slightly medicinal. But Islay whiskies are more than peat and smoke. They are a pandora box of aromatics lot, with different style distinctions. There are only eight distilleries currently active on the island, but each one produces a unique, distinctive whisky.

Ardbeg 10 years old, however, is non chillfiltered and has a strength of 46% abv, thus keeping maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. On adding water a little cloudiness may occur which is perfectly normal and is not a matter to worry about.

UNESCO celebrated Aristotle in 2016

T

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

he year is coming to an end in just a few weeks and most likely very few knew that 2016 was dedicated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) to the Greek philosopher Aristotle. The reason to pay tribute to this iconic thinker was that 2016 marked the 2400th anniversary of Aristotle's birth (he was born in 384 B.C. and died in 322 B.C.). But it is not only the marking of his birth what makes Aristotle's life worth to remember more than two thousand years after his death. One can say that his ideas have shaped much of the western thought. From his metaphysical ideas adopted later by Christian theologians like Saint Thomas Aquinas, to his political ideas somehow present in the constitutional order of many modern nations (after all, at one point he was asked to write a constitution for Athens), to even his ideas about science, in fact he was one of the first to systematically write about the physical world, and he even anticipated the use of the scientific method of observation, as opposed to the pure rational way of philosophy. Of course one cannot forget the fellow thinkers in that classic period who also contributed to Western thought: Socrates and Plato; both preceded Aristotle and indeed they also influenced him, although Aristotle also rejected some of their ideas. The Aristotelian concept of the Final Cause, a metaphysical concept by which an "Unmoved Mover" is the ultimate cause from which all other effects derive, came very handy for Christians (as it may also be for any other monotheistic religion) since it could be equated with God. Indeed this was used as an argument to "prove" the existence of God, a Final Cause, because if there were "nothing" at the beginning, well, then nothing would exist today. Of course, the actual existence of the "Unmoved Mover" cannot be proven, and ultimately would have to be accepted in the lack of a better logical argument or simply out of faith, as in-

deed is for any religious person. Aristotle was also a pioneer in the use of the scientific method, in the school he founded in Athens, the Lyceum, he promoted observational research. He wrote about science in his text "Physics" which dealt not only with what today is the subject of that particular science but indeed with biology and astronomy. He listed about 500 different species, and his geocentric model of the universe dominated western thought until debunked by Copernicus and Galileo. Of course, the fact that he was using a scientific method doesn't guarantee to find truth. His geocentric model was wrong, and then his psychological notion that the heart was the centre of mental activity, especially emotions, was a mistake too. (The Aristotelian association of heart and emotion however still lives with us particularly in every Valentine's Day, when hearts are depicted everywhere to symbolize love, in fact, the
