How to sell high: Avoid these three mistakes when selling your home

WEDNESDAY

January 25, 2017

MONTREAL - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they're even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home's "first impression", and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it's imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a home seller as pricing too low.

Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it's own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled "Home sellers: How to Get the Price You Want( and Need)".This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.sellmyhouseformore.ca Get your free special report NOW to learn how to price your home to your maximum financial advantage

Montreal/New Music festival (MNM) 2017 takes you ‘Back to the Future’

n the occasion of its 50th anniversary the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) presents details of its 8th edition of the Montreal/New Music (MNM), biennial festival, which will be held from Thursday, February 23rd through Saturday, March 4th Over 20 concerts, orchestras, diverse ensembles, soloists, an electroacoustic laboratory, conferences, an international colloquium, a New Music Lounge and youth activities youth follow one another over 10 days and 2 weekends, where the singers and the musicians will accompany audiences at events taking place at approximately ten sites in Montreal’s city centre. With its theme “Back to the Future” the MNM festival will invites audiejces to come along on a temporal, geographical, imaginary fragmented journey, that is especially and always musical, celebrating a half-century of musical creation. Moreover, Walter Boudreau, SMCQ Artistic Director specifies: “Above all I wanted the program to be festive. What I have developed is inspired not only by what we have really liked over the past fifty years, but also by what is being created today. ” Indeed, MNM revisits some works of the repertoire, from past visionaries to composers and founders who have made their mark in the SMCQ’s history. A place also remains for the avant-garde of today and tomorrow, and the prowww.mtltimes.ca

posed program is inspired by the lineage of its usual eclecticism. Major concerts including, among others, the project: Six par 6 – featuring six pianos onstage ! – ensembles McGill Percussion Ensemble and Sixtrum, ECM+, Codes d’accès, Standing Wave (Vancouver), Yarn/Wire (New York), CMMAS (Mexico), McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble. Also Jonathan Goldman, mixing the bandeon with electronics, Totem contemporain and its invented instruents, at Christina Petrowska Quilico paying tribute to Michel-Georges Brégent with Portraits romantiques. Not to forget the string quartet marathon of Bozzini, Molinari and Capitano As always, the festival will have a New Music Lounge (Place-des-Arts) presenting the musical avant-garde through sound creations, invented instruments, acoustic installations, etc., and videos evoking how, 50 years ago, this was imagined as the music of future. “The works slated for MNM 2017 – each in its own way – demonstrate the ceaseless renewal of the composers, at times featuring some “over the top” works that maintain “the” musical traditions, inherited from a not so distant past. Apart from these temporal explorations, there will be some back and forth in the present as well as several curious looks as to what the “new” future holds in store for us over the next 50 years and more, ” concludes Walter Boudreau. How to drink wine like an Italian

Y

ou know this already. Italy is considered the home country of wine, one of Italians' pastime alcoholic beverages. Wine is not just a “ drink” like coke or 7-up in Italy, but it is part of local habits and culture, especially when eating around the table. A lot of people in Italy decide to drink a glass of wine a day whether at lunch, dinner and even as a drink during the ubiquitous aperitivo. My great aunt Antonietta, who lives in Abruzzo comes to my mind. At the age of 90, she stills drinks a glass of rosso Montepulciano in every meal. She has been doing this forever…

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

www.mtltimes.ca

In North American food culture, alcohol is not necessarily seen as an appropriate ingredient in a healthy diet, but unlikely many other drinks wine is a key element of the Mediterranean diet. In fact, as you may have heard by now it is considered to have many beneficial properties that can help people to prevent specific problems; obviously, these are sensible amounts, such as glass or two depending on age, sex and health condition of the person. Red wine is always preferred to white. WEDNESDAY

FOOD & DRINK

The debate still continues on the benefits wine can bring to people's life: there are those who point that, together with positive factors, there are also many negative ones, especially if consumed in excess. However, there are a series of beneficial features contained in the so-called Bacchus nectar. They go from cancer

prevention to increase blood circulation and its anti-ageing properties. Medicine and science have confirmed the important features of the best loved alcoholic drink in Italy, but the elderly, in the end, always knew that: in the old times, the elderly would drink a glass of wine both at lunch and dinner, stating that: il vino fa buon sangue (wine makes good blood). It may have been popular belief, but this old saying has been now proven by science. Wine is among the best alcoholic drinks to choose both for its taste and the health benefits it can procure, but it always has to be consumed in moderation. In vino veritas, in wine rests the truth, is a famous Latin saying meaning that if a person is tipsy will certainly tell the truth; we could say in vino salus, in wine rests health, but never drink too many glasses!

What made the dominant display even more impressive, was that Lafreniere took the bout on short notice, and it was reveled following the fight that he had undertaken a massive gambit by accepting the challenge. Easter Island and its mystery I

Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands on Earth. Early settlers called the island "Te Pito O Te Henua" (Navel of The World). Officially a territory of Chile, it lies far off in the Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway to Tahiti

n the local language of Rapa Nui--the original name of Easter Island--this small Chilean outpost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean was also known as "Te pito te henua" or "The navel of the world" suggesting a special place plenty of mysteries. The island, transformed now into an attractive tourist spot, continues to wonder travellers from all over the world.

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

www.mtltimes.ca

The main focus of attention are the dozens of moais, the giant sculptures that dot the island and seem to guard over its inhabitants. The most impressive collections of these giant statues are found in the area known as Tongariki where fifteen moais look toward the centre of the island, and Rano Raraku, where dozens of them are located in the most diverse positions. Indeed this was a place where the statues were sculpted using the abundant volcanic rocks found there. Rano Raraku is also an extinct volcano, one of the three that originated Easter Island some few millions of years ago. WEDNESDAY

A typical Rapa Nui dancer

For years since the island was first sighted by Europeans in the 17th century, the mysterious statues gave rise to all kinds of speculations, of course, the weirdest of them resorting to extraterrestrial visitors to explain the transportation and installation of the massive statues on their platforms (known as "ahus"). To the disappointment of alien fans, however, moving and positioning the moais was not such an impossible task for the natives who could have resorted to simple mechanical implements using local materials and a great deal of physical force to move them. Nothing magical or out-of-thisworld technology was involved in the creation and installation of the moais. However, some other mysteries remain: What was the purpose of the statues? What about the alignment of some other monuments with the solstices? There is now some consensus that the moais were fu24

neral monuments, mostly for prominent members of the Rapa Nui society. The fact that at one point some of them were destroyed or removed from their platforms would have only been the result of internal conflicts. Although Chile annexed Easter Island in 1888, for a long time the authorities in Santiago didn't pay close attention to the distant territory which at one point hosted a leprosy asylum while on other occasions it served as a place of relegation for political opponents during the first decades of the 20th century. The Chilean Navy managed the island until the 1960s when it finally got a civilian administration. A historic first air connection to the continent in 1950 eventually made the Chilean authorities see the island as a part of its territory, especially for its potential for tourism: a potential that is being reached now.

Not surprisingly, given its historical context, the relations between the Rapa Nui natives and the continental government (which some more radical sectors even describe as "colonial") haven't been easy. In 2015 a conflict between the Chilean national parks agency, which manages almost all of the island except for the town of Hanga Roa, and the Rapa Nui community ended with an agreement to co-administer the sites. However, there are still some unresolved issues: the Rapa Nui people complain that not enough of the resources that the national parks agency generates from the visitors to the archaeological sites are invested back on the island which needs better roads and facilities for the islanders.

28

Preservation of their language and culture is also a concern for the Rapa Nui people. They are currently pursuing some legal autonomy that should allow them to have more control over immigration from the continent. They seek to limit the number of Chileans from the continent settling on the island and making the Rapa Nui language compulsory for all children enrolled in the island's schools (a sort of Bill 101 Rapa Nui-style. Only that in the islanders' case the "villain" is Spanish and not English--indeed many Rapa Nui have learned the language of Shakespeare to better interact with tourists, a show of traditional dance that I attended was introduced in both Spanish and English). Political issues aside, Easter Island is a wonderful place to visit, it's very safe (houses have no fences, something you don't see in continental Chile) and people can walk late at night without a problem. Anakena is a pleasant beach with warm turquoise water, near the Ovahe site there is another beach not suitable for swimming but good for scuba diving. There is also great food, especially if you love tuna. This relatively expensive fish in North America is a local catch in Easter Island, so you'll find

www.mtltimes.ca

it in many different dishes and at a reasonable price. Lobster and other local seafood are also plenty. And of course chicken: the birds were brought to the island and now are everywhere, they are really "free range" chicken. The Rapa Nui people are ethnically Polynesian and therefore not related to the continental Chileans who are mostly of Spanish origin. However, some islanders are also descendants of mixed marriages.
