Montreal Heated Sidewalks

Hot or Cold Idea?

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

n 2015 the City of Montreal announced plans to install heated sidewalks on Ste-Catherine Street and it now appears they will be moving ahead with the project. The first phase will be installed on a 670-metre stretch starting in 2018 and the second phase to start within 2 years will see it expanded to 2.2km, all part of the major revamping of the street between Bleury and Atwater. The idea should be warmly received by Montrealers, especially those who lived through the 1998 ice storm - albeit heated sidewalks or even fire and brimstone would have been frozen out during that storm. This past January alone has shown us climate change is real. Experts in the field say the bizarre weather patterns we have been experiencing might mean more freezing rain in the winter. Wouldn't it be great if someone at the Public Works Department could have called Mayor Denis Coderre this past January 23rd, when the forecast changed from 25cm of snow to almost 10mm of freezing rain and asked, "Hey Denis, can we flip the switch for the sidewalk heaters?" MONTREAL

Then again, if our roads were heated as well, we might not have become globally famous for the epic pile up on Beaver Hall Hill St. last December when two STM buses, a police car, a snow plough and several cars slowly 'slip-slided' down the hill - with several coming to a stop to the tune of crunching metal and caught on video for the world to see. In that case, it was not freezing rain but snow that fell and it seems city workers forgot one side of the road. 'Holy moly‌ flip the switch! Flip the switch!' would come the cry from City Hall. When Ste-Catherine St. is ripped up next year between Bleury and Mansfield, construction of the heated sidewalks is scheduled to begin. Special tubing will be installed underneath the pavement and a mixture of water and glycol, heated by electricity, will flow through it. The system should then be able to heat the sidewalks to 3C, which should be warm enough to

www.mtltimes.ca

prevent snow from accumulating and ice to form - and have the ability to melt snow at 2.5cm per hour at temperatures as low as minus 9C. The city's estimate for the cost of the first phase of the operation is around $26 million. City snow removal operations are expensive - with an annual budget of $155 million to cover more than 10,000km in the network. Trucks, plows and over 140,000 tons of rock-salt used during the winter causes damage to sidewalks, roads and the environment. The City is confident the need for less salt will not only have a less harmful impact on the environment, but with less plows also tearing up the pavement, will help to balance out the costs. But there are some critics who are concerned about potential and costly breakdowns to the heating system, as well as the technology being used, installation and operations.

Still, there are many positive ways to look at it. There will be less pedestrians who slip and fall, ending up with concussions and broken bones - which could translate into much fewer visits to already crowded emergency rooms, helping to reduce health costs. And perhaps Montrealers will start heading downtown more often during the winter months, which in turn could bring some badly needed business back to the downtown core, and that means more tax revenue for the City coffers. In the residential sector, heated driveways, sidewalks and patios are now helping to melt away the 'snow shovel blues'. Installations of electric, hydronic and radiant heating methods have been increasing, with customized systems available to meet the needs of different clients and rel-

atively easy to install. It is a welcome idea for any North American. Some Montrealers are concerned that if moderate snowfalls are constantly being melted off our sidewalks, they would miss the pleasure of a 'winter-wonderland' stroll. Others welcome the idea of being able to stroll down the city's main artery without having to worry if their next step will bring them crashing down. And then there are those who are skeptical about the estimated costs. Should we invest in heated sidewalks? Will it pay off in the long run - or do we actually need better management of our snow and ice removal system? Can any system truly meet the needs of a Montreal winter? Your opinions are 'warmly' welcome.

FOOD REVIEW

I

14

By Alyssa De Rosa mtltimes.ca

nternationally renowned chef Matt McKean graced the city with a new, vibrant Mexican restaurant. Taqueria Arturo located on Prince Arthur Street is a new Mexican taco restaurant focused on creating the most delicious and authentic tacos and burritos, along with an array of cocktails to please the palette. While walking into Taqueria Arturo, I not only felt like I was traveling down south to a Mexican Taqueria, but I also felt like I was walking into a holy sanctuary. The vintage-lit location with church pews and church candles spread among the restaurant makes you feel like you’ve just entered a Catholic Mexican church. The small local, with a seating for 77 hungry people, is dim, nostalgic but most importantly, the tacos served are unquestionably some of the best I’ve ever eaten. As for alcohol, Taqueria Arturo is probably one of the main Mezcal destinations. One too many shots of this and you’ll definitely feel like you’re in Mexico!

FOOD REVIEW

The menu serves a variety of Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos, guacamole and tortillas with a hint of Middle Eastern and Asian flare. The guacamole is definitely on point. Smooth and flavorful paired with the perfect toasted tortilla chip, it’s a perfect entrée to get you salivating and wanting more. One of my favorite taco dishes on the menu is by far the tuna tostada made with Ahi Tuna sashimi, chipotle aioli, crispy leeks and avocado on a crispy corn tortilla. That tuna was perfect. The menu is will definitely please anyone, with meat-lover options to vegetarian options to spicy and moderate, I haven’t found a place just like this one yet in the city. “We wanted to kick things up a notch with the menu and offer an eclectic variety of tacos and burritos.” Says owner and chef Matt McKean, “From our Gochjujang Rib eye with fermented chili paste and grilled kimchee to our Peking Duck with pickled daikon and hoisin, the concentration is on pushing the flavor profiles forward and straying away from the typical Mexican fare." To complete his visionary team and the concept for Taqueria Arturo, McKean is collaborating with Chef Jason Joyal (owner of Diablos Smokehouse) and a New Orleans native who will be smoking all of the meats used in the tacos and burritos being served at Taqueria Arturo. For those who haven’t been to Diablos Smokehouse, it’s a must. For someone who love tacos and Mexican food as much as myself, I was impressed with the authenticity of Taqueria Arturo as well as the sustainability and simplicity in the cooking. Chef McKean gave me a quick tour of the kitchen and ingredients where it’s clear that only fresh, sustainable produce are used in the making of these delicious dishes. So, take a cheat day or a cheat night and visit this new taco heaven! You won’t regret it.

Delicious French toast recipe for romance

(NC) While flowers are lovely, there's something very special about a homemade treat from your sweetheart. Waking up to the smell of a delicious meal is a great way to start the day, so treat your loved one to breakfast (or brunch) in bed. Paul Lowe, food and craft stylist and founder of Sweet Paul Magazine, shares his recipe for whipping up an easy heart-shaped dish of love — perfect for Valentine's Day or any other day you're feeling romantic. To make the recipe just for two, Lowe says to simply reduce ingredients by half. Score even more points by cleaning up the mess afterwards with a floral scented cleaning product, like honeysuckle dish soap from Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day.

Ingredients: • 20 slices of good quality white bread • 1 1/2 cup whole milk • 4 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Pinch of salt Instructions: 1. Start by greasing a baking dish. 2. Cut out hearts in the bread using a cookie cutter and layer the hearts in dish. 3. Beat remaining ingredients until nice and smooth. Pour evenly over bread. Place in fridge and let stand for at least two hours or overnight. 4. Bake at 350°F until golden brown, about 35 minutes. Top with berries and whipped cream or syrup and serve. Tip: To make this into a savoury casserole, omit the vanilla and sprinkle with grated cheese, crumbled bacon and chives.

his past weekend Les Canadiennes packed the Bell Sports Complexe in Brossard with two straight wins over the Toronto Furies. Marie-Philip Poulin scored both game winning goals with forward Karell Emard putting one past Toronto's goaltender Christina Kessler during Saturday's 20 win. On Sunday Ann-Sophie Bettez scored in the first period, paving the way for Poulin's overtime goal and a 2-1 win. Right after the game on Saturday Les Canadiennes also held their seventh annual 'Pink in the Rink' game, broadcast live nationally on Sportsnet. Prior to the game, the team honored 'Seincr’eau', a Dragon Boat Team comprised entirely of breast cancer survivors. During the game, fans lined up to bid on exclusive items in a silent auction. A portion of proceeds from the game and the auctions will be donated to the Wellness Initiative of the Cedars Breast Clinic at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). This year’s edition has already raised $14,500, exceeding last year’s total with more still to come as bidding remained open for a select few items in the online auction. Sunday was also 'Fan Appreciation Day' and Ann-Sophie Bettez showed fans she had some talent off the ice as well when she sang the national anthem. She shoots… and she sings! Eight members of Les Canadiennes will head to Toronto next weekend to take part in the CWHL All-Star Game, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Air Canada Centre. The team will return to action on Feb. 18-19, when it visits the Calgary Inferno. WEDNESDAY
