How food banks help our communities

(NC) When we think about food banks, we might be under the misconception that they're mostly used by regular clients stopping by for a weekly hamper pickup, but the reality couldn't be more different. Here Katharine Schmidt, executive director, Food Banks Canada shares insights into the services that modern food banks provide to help their clients meet their own long-term needs. Community kitchens. Whether it's the Greater Vancouver Food Bank in Vancouver, or The Sharing Place in Orillia, many food banks across Canada operate community kitchen programs. Community kitchens bring together community members to host workshops to teach participants how to start their own community kitchen, provide food safety training and certification, and teach vital cooking skills to clients and volunteers. Kids programs. According to Food Banks Canada, approximately one third of those helped by food banks are children. Good nutrition during infancy and early childhood years is vital to long-term growth and health. That's why food banks often provide special hampers for families with infants and small children. Local food banks will also point their clients to community programs to help educate parents and children on proper nutrition. Fresh food recovery. Surplus food is an essential part of the food bank ecosystem. Food banks

typically support local agencies like shelters and community centres with these items, which they pick up from local grocery stores, restaurants, hotels and cafeterias. In addition to feeding our communities, food recovery programs also help to reduce food waste. Food hampers. Food hampers remain one of the most valuable tools in our efforts to help people in need fight against hunger. And contrary to popular belief, most clients couldn't be considered regulars. According to a 2016 report from the Mississauga Food Bank, only 11 per cent of clients visited the location once

or more per month. Food hampers will help provide recipients with essential food items to augment existing food supplies at home when times get tough. Community programs, nutritional education and support for other community organizations help relieve food insecurity issues. But they could not operate without the help of volunteers and a steady stream of donations. This spring, local food banks across Canada are partnering with stores like Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstore to collect donations and help feed our communities. www.newscanada.com

regions of Chile right now are something different for which it 's hard to be well prepared. Over 136 thousand hectares have burned since the fires started in mid-January, more than three thousand people have been displaced from their homes, and 1,089 houses had been destroyed until the beginning of this week. dismissed by President Michelle Bachelet. A variety of so-called anarchist groups has been involved in some actions (the most recent a letter bomb sent to the CEO of the stateowned copper corporation) which are themselves somehow of dubious origin. The truth is that at this time it is impossible to confirm or deny any of the theories on the causes of the fires. Probably in most cases, they had a natural cause, but given the existing evidence, human action--not only negligence but also intent--must also be regarded as a likely cause of some fires. On the positive side, however, the Chileans have been grateful for the timely and efficient international assistance they have received to combat the fires. With a significant experience in battling forest fires, Canada was also asked to help. Fire brigades, helicopters, and planes from neighbouring countries were in Chile almost immediately, assistance from more distant countries has also arrived and has been quite effective in fighting the fires. Americans and Russians, in particular, became very useful, both contributing with powerful imple-

ments: a Boeing Supertanker rented by a Chilean woman married to the owner of Walmart, and an Ilyushin tanker and a large Antonov carrying state of the art helicopters facilitated by Russia were welcome in particular by the Chileans. Lessons for Canada and any other country with a significant forestry industry? Besides the natural and human factors that may have contributed to the huge fires, the practices of the forestry companies--which are not different from country to country--are seen as a contributing factors to the devastation of the fires. In the Chilean case, the plantation of pines and eucalyptus, both

highly combustible species, displacing native trees is certainly a factor to consider. These trees have in turn dried up water sources on the soil and eliminated other vegetation that could retain humidity on the ground. Perhaps amid the catastrophe affecting Chile's forests, some voices should rise asking for a review of the practices incurred by big forestry corporations around the world, including what they are doing in Canada as well, home to one of the richest forestry reserves in the world. After all, it is important to remember that all that richness can go up in smoke in a few days.

Sun Youth mourns the loss of a Dear Friend

E

veryone at Sun Youth was shocked and deeply saddened to hear the news that long time volunteer and friend to the organization, Freda Kopyto, passed away on January 26th. Freda Kopyto was a dear friend and a real mother and grand-mother figure to all. Freda started volunteering at Sun Youth after her beloved husband, Abie, passed away in 1996. Her role as a volunteer ensured that everyone coming through would have a talk with her on their way in and once again on their way out. Freda may have had a small stature of only 4’8, but few would dispute that she lacked in character or personality; her presence could not be overlooked. Daughter of a

Rabbi, she lived by a simple principle of leaving someone feeling happier after they had met her, than before they had arrived. Having worked as a teacher’s aide for 30 years at Devonshire school and then volunteering at Sun Youth for over 20 years, Freda was known by many people around the neighbourhood. She always had something to say and couldn’t walk more than a few meters on Saint-Laurent or SaintUrbain without bumping into someone she knew, hence why she acquired the nickname of Mayor of Saint-Laurent and Queen of Saint-Urbain. Her renown showed in the great amount of people that attended her funeral to pay their respect. Family, neighbours, friends and

colleagues gathered at the Paperman & Sons Funeral home on Sunday, January 29th to remember and honour her life. Sun Youth would like to take this opportunity to wish its deepest condolences to Freda’s friends, family, and anyone she encountered and had a positive impact on. We especially would like to thank the loves of her life, her children Stanley Kopyto, Francine and Zvulun Salem and grand children Asaf and Dana for sharing her with us for all these years. We will always remember her laughter, her selflessness, her generosity, her feistiness, her determination and sincere concern for other people’s wellbeing. Loved by many, she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

Casa Design Sponsored

fter two decades of placing customer needs at the forefront of my business, I've noticed time after time classic mistakes made by both home owners and contractors alike. My name is John Antonacci from Casa Design. I want to share with you my observations and suggestions that will make your kitchen and bathroom renovations a success. Over the next few weeks, I will be helping homeowners like yourself spot nightmare renovation warning signs before it's too late and what you should be looking for when heading into the kitchen and bathroom reno world. From professional advice to just basic know how's, you'll find that having expert advice goes a long way. Such as Project Management, sound advice, educating people on materials, proper function, personalized service, designer & contractors. You Get what You Pay For According to a financial post article, consumer spending for home renovation in Canada has steadily increased to reach a record 63.4 billion reported in 2013.

It's likely that some of that money was probably spent fixing the renovation mistakes made by contractors with minimal experience and poor work practices. If you think hiring a professional is expensive, then consider the high cost of not hiring one. Many homeowners try to save money by going with an inexpensive handyman and end up stuck with sloppy work that costs more money in the long run. While it's clear that no homeowner wants to spend more than necessary on renovations, how much is the right amount? At casa design, we suggest starting with some simple research and shopping around for prices. Renovation quotes will usually range from very high, to suspiciously low. Very low quotes that seem too good to be true probably are and indicate that a contractor probably doesn't have the required experience to quote properly for a job, or may take shortcuts that compromise safety and the finished product. Research does reveal that higher renovation quotes often reflect the superior skill level of a contractor who is in high

demand and has a reputation for quality work. Remodelling quotes in the middle range tend to show the average market price for a particular renovation project. As home owners, we all want to make sure that when we invest in our properties we don't end up braking the bank while breaking our heads. Having an expert work alongside you to reach your reno goals will avoid the DIY hassles and the re-do of inexperienced contractors-both costly, both frustrating. Our expert advice will make project management and designing the most efficient way to properly realize your reno project. I always want to make sure my clients appreciate the value of both the work being done and the honest professional advice given because we want your reno experience to be a great one. In this case it's not a simple quality vs quantity. Consider both quality and quantity because at Casa Design we proudly fabricate using Quebec made products. Valentine’s Day and Rhone wines

F

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

or this year St Valentine’s column wine column, are you really looking to score?. Then, I have some wine recommendations for you. In my mind, there

is no better way to celebrate the day with some Southern Rhone wines. They are great wines, are affordable and I have disovered that they have ties to the day. How is that, my dear reader may ask? Well, the history goes back to the lovely port town of Roquemaure, in the Southern Rhône near the city of Avignon. This place has a big tradition of winemaking and it used St. Valentine to save the town!. The Southern Rhone has been making wines since already a long time. This winemaking area was one of the first to step up the commercial wine enterprise business. In particu-

lar, Roquemaure and the neighboring towns began branding their wine bar-

Buti Nages SAQ # 00427625 $15.05

It might be odd to talk about rose in February but to tell you the truth, I enjoy pink wine all year long. This medium-bodied rosé is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah drawn from Michel Gassier vineyards. It has an undulated textured, with easy red berry fruit and citrus elements. It's a clean, refreshing, with a friendly price.

Cave de Rasteau Ortas Tradition 2015 SAQ # 113407 $16.80

Full-bodied and fleshy with tasty, pulpy black fruit and notes of smoke. Love the price as well.. Established in 1925, the Cave de Rasteau is one of the oldest wineries in the Rhone Valley. The wine end with notes of fruit cake spices and more dry black fruit. Have it with braised beef with carrots. The classic GSM blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, and Syrah present here, with Syrah taking a more protagonist role than in the past.

rels with “CDR” for Côtes-du-Rhône as early as 1737 (200 years before the French quality pyramid appeared) to let wine lovers know that the origin and quality of the wine was remarkable. With an strategic situation for exporting (the town is right on the Rhône River) they did a profitable trade and got lots of kudos from their stamp. Sadly though, the success from this area to spread far and wide and also was its road to perdition, Roquemaure’s location on the Rhône and its imports from America, especially from New York required a special assistance from St. Valentine. As the tales goes, in 1862 a French wine trader re-

Grande Réserve des Challières, Ventoux 2015 SAQ # 331090 $12.45

ceived a shipment of American grapevines, which he proudly planted in his garden in the town. In the course of a year, a strange thing started to happen to neighboring vineyards — they were deadly sick and started to die. Why? Because those grapevines, carried a lethal bug that multiplied with alarming speed and poisoned the roots of European grapevines (different species from American ones), thus becoming a serial killer in fairly a short time. American vines are immune to this disease, called phylloxera, but the French aren’t and died nearly on the spot (this spread all over France and other parts of Europe, by the way. This make wonder

sometimes why some frenchpeople hate Americans. By 1868 Roquemaure, which its local economy relied big on wine, was affected by phylloxera and all the vines lay dead or were turning like zombies. People grew desperate. So they pulled out the big guns — a rich citizen in the town, Maximillen Richard, headed to Rome to see about buying some relics of a patron saint for protection. After some heavy dealing, Richard returned with the relics of St. Valentine. Gradually the vineyards recovered and the townspeople fell in love with their guardian. Since 1989, on the Saturday and Sunday closest to Valentine’s Day, the town of Roquemaure hosts La Fête des Amoureux (the Festival of Lovers) to celebrate love and lovers alike. This is a nice history and it makes a different change from the traditional or cornySt. Valentine wine recommendation column. Hope you have a wonderful love day with your better half.

Located in the south-facing slopes of Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse, which rises to 6,272 feet covering almost 16,556 acres. Since earliest classical times, vines have been grown in Ventoux. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, this Ventoux has a seductive nose of ripe plums, blackberries and black currants intertwined with sweet spice and a touch of tobacco. Soft tannins and great length on the dark chocolate-dusted finish. Great wine to have with a stuffed veal roast. Drink through 2017.

Château Mont-Redon, Lirac 2014 SAQ # 11293970 $24.95

A classic southern-Rhône blend, by one of the region's most celebrated producers. The stony, pebble-covered soils bring to mind those of nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape.The estate makes this wonderful Lirac blend partly matured in French oak for 18 months. Deep and inky purple. A fragrant nose of raspberry and blackberry, with subtle hints of thyme and licorice. The palate is robust, with weighty tannins and an inviting warmth. Will be at its prime after a couple of years cellarage. Drink with a prime rib roast.

Domaine Elodie Balme Côtes du Rhône Village 2014 SAQ # 12474131 $25.05

Elodie Balme is a young and dynamic winemaker that started in the wine business in 2006.Youngest daughter of a family of winemakers, Elodie felt in love quickly with winemaking. She works across different Rhone villages appellations such as Rasteau and Roaix. She is rapidly becoming a shining star in the appellation of Rasteau. This wine can be described in three words: Power, structure and longetivity. A must with a noble piece of wild game.

Pet of the Week Meet Kit-Katt the Cat

Meet Kit-Katt the cat, or 'Katt' as he is often called by his family. Kit-Katt is a 3 year old tabby-mix who lives in Ville St. Pierre with Éric Dupont and his family. Three years ago Éric was shopping with his daughter who needed a new pair of shoes - and instead came home with an unexpected purchase. "My daughter, who was only 7 years old at the time, was not the easiest of shoppers. She had her mind set on a certain type of shoe… and was determined to find them. Several hours later, we had no luck and were ready to head home when we stopped in front of a pet shop. A cute kitten was playing by himself in the window display and she wanted to go in to see the 'little kitty'." As soon as they entered the pet shop his daughter ran over to the enclosure. " 'Papa', she said to me,

'he looks so sad, why is he all alone?'. I told her it was because he was just waiting for someone to take him home." Éric used to have a cat when he was younger who he loved very much and was devastated when it died. Since then he never wanted any pets in his life. "When she looked up to me and said 'Papa, then we will have to take him home… he can't be alone tonight'… well, something broke in me, and he really did look lonely and sad." He asked the sales clerk if they could see the

kitten. When he saw the kitten in his daughter's arms, her face lighting up as it curled up in the nook of her neck and purred, he broke - and the rest is history. Kit-Katt is now a welcome part of the family and has helped Éric to heal. He is fun, loving and his daughter's best friend. And just how did the name 'Kit-Katt' come about? Love your baby

T

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

his is our Earth to Body baby, Sidney Roy, proud son of Heidi and Steph, whom many of you have met at the shows or here locally at our La Boutique Earth to Body. Sidney is new to the world, new to Kangaroo Care and Baby Massage and loving every minute. “In the early 1980s, two pediatricians in Bogota, Colombia, made waves around the world for a new method of caring for premature babies. The method, called Kangaroo Care, was so named because of how it resembles marsupial care giving: A mother snuggles her baby, upright, against her bare chest for long periods of time.” Although the male kangaroo may depart, our fathers stay. They cuddle, coo and massage their baby. Both Heidi and Steph practice skin to skin with Sidney and they are seeing their baby thrive. Sidney smiles all the time. Kangaroo care was first practiced in preemies, but is now wisely extended to full term babies. Like Sidney. It makes sense. Who does not

want to feel, smell and absorb the warmth of nurturing comfort, love and security? Baby massage is just as important. It benefits all over, the legs, the belly, the neck, the arms, the heart, the soul. Our Organic Baby Package is for delicate, new-to-the– world skin, pure, simple and nourishing. Sidney loves the Baby Love Oil. It not only aids in the art of the massage itself, but it moisturizes and feeds the skin the needed nourishment. Both Heidi and Steph regularly massage Sidney. Sidney loves the baby castile soap, all over. Its purity and simplicity is meant for soft, delicate skin and contains no essential oils. He also loves the Castile Moringa, which is renowned for its gentle approach to sensitive skin. It can be purchased separately from the baby package. Both soaps can be used head to toe. It is not necessary to buy commercial baby shampoos where there is the danger of too many irritants. A good cold processed soap works just fine. A baby’s diaper area loves the Neem Salve. It is gentle and effective, antibacterial, anti-inflamma-

tory and anti-fungal. It is a simpler version of our adult neem salve, made especially for a baby’s new and sensitive skin. The Lavender Rose Linen spray has many uses. It can used to freshen the room, disinfect baby changing table, spritzed on and around the crib area to disinfect and also to calm the baby. Lavender works wonders on relaxing the soul. Consider truly natural products for your own baby, all babies. Ask Sidney. He’s a believer. Heidi and Steph are teaching Sidney baby sign language and pretty soon he will be able to ask for his own 'spa day'. "Massage me please, Mama." "Sing to me, Papa.” We, at Earth to Body, wish you all a Happy Valentine’s. We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. Visit our online store: natural.ca. t is the age old question. We ask it every night and most times there is an easy response. However, there are times when the answer doesn’t come easy – even for a professional chef! Take last night for instance. I went freezer diving to see what inspiration I could come up with. I found some chicken breasts and some bacon. Bacon is one of my favourite things so I threw together a couple of ingredients and I had a wonderful dinner of chicken with a tossed salad and a side of rice. Here is what I did and the quantities are estimated. Having an exact amount of any one ingredient is not really important – it is the technique that counts. Ingredients: 1 lb of bacon, chopped into 1/2 “dice 10 chicken breasts (that’s what I had on hand) 1 tbsp Cajun spice 2 onions, roughly chopped 3 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped 2 packages of white mush-
