thing into a piece of magic on stage. No doubt that will be true with Another Brick in the Wall - The Opera. Just in time for Montreal’s 375th anniversary! Montreal is a music city that has embraced rock and its musicians over the years, so it is most fitting that the world premiere of Another Brick in the Wall - The Opera is performed here, in our vibrant city. Our Montreal artists, set, lighting and costume designers, have all pulled together to adapt and create this iconic piece. Bravo Mon-

A lot of subscribers to the opera are from the era of rock music - that has resulted in 60 percent of the subscribers to the Opera de Montreal already investing in tickets to the show. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Why Collect Coins?

T

By Michael Joffre mtltimes.ca

he other day, someone came in our office with a group of coins, and during my conversation with them they asked “why would anyone collect coins?”. Well here are some of my reasons…perhaps you have yours… History. There are very few activities where you can actually hold history in your hands. How many authentic objects from the Roman Empire, the knights of medieval Europe or early America have you seen? How about OWNING them? When you hold a 2,000 year old coin, you get a special feeling of being connected with the past. This in turn will motivate you to learn more about history, and how it relates to your coins. The Hunt. For collectors, there is nothing more exciting than trying to find that elusive item they are missing. Some coins are so rare, that a lifetime of searching, and an unlimited budget will not produce results…so finding a rare item to add to your collection can be a special event. Clubs. Collecting for some is a private thing, but it does not need to be. By getting together with fellow collectors, you can share stories, learn from each other, help each other find missing items, and most importantly make new friends. I have found that coin collectors in general, are some of the

STUDIO

nicest people, and this is why I have joined so many clubs. In Montreal, there is the Lakeshore Coins Club (in Pointe-Claire), and the Montreal Numismatic Society (downtown). Outside of Montreal, there is a big club in Boucherville, and another in Quebec City. Of course we have a national club, the Royal Canadian Numismatic Society, and the largest club in the world is the American Numismatic Association. I am president of both Montreal clubs, and a member of all of the others mentioned, and will be happy to provide information about them to anyone who wishes to contact me. Travel. There are coin conventions and exhibits across Canada, the USA, and around the world. Planning a vacation around them can be fun, as it is an excuse to visit places you have not been. Also, many major cities actually have either coin, or major museums with major collections on display. Financial. Many coins are made of precious metals, like gold, silver, and platinum, which over time (as per my previous article on gold), have shown to be an excellent preserver of wealth from inflation. Furthermore, a basket of rare, quality condition coins, would have likely given you a return much superior to the stock market over the last 5, 10, 20, or 50 years, if purchased at a proper market price. Learning. Coin collecting seems like a simple

past-time, but as the old saying goes…the more you know, the more you know that you do not know. This is why learning is so important in our hobby. When I started out collecting as a kid, I had no books, and went to the library to look at an old reference or two. Today, I have thousands (yes thousands!) of reference books, catalogs, research papers, etc, relating to coins…and I am just scratching the surface. Not only can coin collectors learn about history, but also geography, economics, metallurgy, art, religion, politics, etc, etc. Young children have the added benefit of learning math skills as well. Unfortunately, there is not enough space here for me to continue with a myriad of other reasons to collect,…but to sum it up in one big reason…because coin collecting is FUN. Michael Joffre is owner of Carsley Whetstone & Company Inc. a firm that buys and sells rare coins and related collectables. He is always interested in buying older coin collections. CWC also carries a full line of books and collecting supplies, available in stock in their retail store. Michael can be reached at 514-2899761, or at sales@carsleys.com . Singing the Winter Blues?

he month of February is well upon us, with some of the coldest and dreariest days of the winter season. It has many singing the 'Winter Blues', while wistfully dreaming of spring to arrive faster than Canada's most famous groundhog Wiarton Willie would dictate. "I'm singing the blues, da-dum da-dum, the dark winter blues, da-dum dadum, it's got me unglued, da-dum da-dum, there's salt in my shoes, da-dum da-dum…" The holiday season is behind us, there are no more colorful lights hanging on trees to brighten the early nights, no more songs of cheer and 'goodwill to all men' looping on the radio or on our electronic devices - and instead of Christmas cards in the mail, the bills are pouring in. It could be very depressing. But it's not as bad for people who engage willingly in outdoor winter sports and activities or those who are able to travel south, towards warmer pastures for a couple of weeks or more. For others, like Willie the groundhog

when he sees his shadow, they would like to head back into their burrow and nap for another six weeks. They dream not of sandy beaches, but of being able to take off their leg warmers and boots in exchange for shorts and sandals. The weeks towards the spring equinox can feel like months or even years away - and for many the winter blues are very real. The 'Winter Blues' in more severe cases is also known as 'winter depression' and part of the spectrum of what is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression related to changes in seasons. It could sap your energy and make you feel moody and anxious. Some people experience feelings of hopelessness, they lose interest in activities, have less of a sex drive, digestive problems and even difficulty concentrating or making decisions. There are treatments for more severe cases of SAD such as light therapy, ionizedair, cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication. So what can one do with

a case of the more common 'Winter Blues'? If a double-double cup of java from Timmie's doesn’t help lift the blahs away, do not despair. There are some scientifically proven ways to lift your spirits and ease the mid-winter doldrums.

that influence mood and can be as effective as some medications. Sitting next to a window with the blinds open can also help. GET OUTDOORS AND WALK: Bundle up and get outside. A 2005 study from Harvard University suggests taking a brisk walk for about 35-60 minutes a few days a week, especially on sunny days, improved symptoms. It lowers stress levels and helps people to focus better. benefit - and you could do it alone when nobody is watching! Being silly can do wonders for your mind, body and spirit. TAKE A VACATION: Not everyone can afford a trip down south to a warm, sunny location but if you can, 'beach therapy' can do wonders. EAT BETTER: Good news! Although eating healthy is always recommended, chocolate can help to improve your mood and offer some relief. But beware of treats like sugary candy because the relief is only temporary relief and could result increased symptoms. Given that an estimated one in four people are biologically effected by the 'Winter Blues' or SAD, perhaps leaving the science behind and following your own instincts once in a while wouldn't hurt. When the spring season seems too far away, maybe dipping into the peanut butter jar or reaching for that piece of cheesecake wouldn't be such a bad thing - and you could blame it on your biological clock.

Becket Players hit high notes for KIZMET

A

Pierre Frégeau, President WIAIH Board of Directors, and Joey Savatierre, President Becket Players Foundation

t the end of 2017, the KIZMET Young Child & Parent Centre will open in SainteGeneviève as an important family resource centre for all West Island families. It will support young families and be a hub for the community. WIAIH, the organization raising the necessary $1.7M for the construction of this centre, is proud to announce that the Becket Players, supporters of KIZMET since the very beginning, have jumpstarted 2017 donations by making an extra $15,000 donation. In November, Merck Canada chose the Becket Players as a Neighbour of Choice, a prestigious award that recognized their long-time implication in their community. The award came with a cash gift which Becket Players are, in their turn, donating to help build the KIZMET Centre. Joseph Savattiere, President of the Becket Players, is proud that Becket Players has such a long history of supporting children’s charities through

its shows produced in over 43 years. “We are very proud to be able to support such an important cause in the West Island and have adopted WIAIH’s project for the KIZMET Centre. We have been supported by West Islanders since our inception so why not keep our good fortune within our community. Community support is what we are all about and we support this project 100%.” The territory of the West Island Health Centre has the highest number of births in the province; some 10,000 children are born here annually. Since 85% of brain development takes place in the first 6 years of life, research shows that this is the most effective time to ensure that parents have the tools they need to stimulate and nurture their young children. Natalie Chapman, director of WIAIH is very grateful to the Becket Players Foundation. “they were one of the first to come on board and saw immediately the potential of this project to make a difference to little children in a

vulnerable area of the West Island. It shows their absolute commitment to improving conditions so that children will have a better life.” WIAIH is hoping that others will join in to ensure that this unique resource for West Island young children will come to reality. Our society faces many problems that stem directly from early childhood. Paying attention to the early years with an eye to prevention is important and should be our priority.

About The Becket Players Foundation: a federally chartered, long-standing, non-profit organization dedicated the advancement of the performing arts in the West Island community of Montreal. Over the past 42 years they have raised over $3.4 million dollars to help children locally. Volunteers make up the backbone of the Becket Players. The 2017 show, Red Carpet-All Night Long, will be held in May at DDO Community Centre. For more information visit becketplayers.ca .

Mr. Goldberg Goes to Tel Aviv gives fresh perspective on Middle East conflict

T

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

he seething conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians in the Middle East has been going on for well over 70 years, with no signs of letting up. Although the prize in this long brewing conflict is land, especially the land that makes up the State of Israel, there are plenty of complexities involved that make things so complicated. There are plenty of books, articles, debates and arguments on both sides that tries to give a sense of resolution to the conflict, but ends up just adding to the never-ending pile of frustration. In his new play “Mr. Goldberg Goes to Tel Aviv”, acclaimed playwright Oren Safdie offers a rather fresh perspective on the Middle East conflict, as he gives the audience a much better understanding of what is involved on both sides of the issue. Presented by Infinitheatre at the St. James Theatre in Old Montreal until this Sunday (February 19), the play takes place in a suite located in a five-star hotel in Tel Aviv. It’s occupied by Tony Goldberg, an uptight, rather fuss-budget best selling author (David Gale) who is in Tel Aviv to

deliver a controversial speech to promote his new book about the Middle East. While he is tooling around his suite clad in bathrobe and slippers getting ready for his speech, he is visited by two individuals: Yonatan (Mohsen El Gharbi), an Israeli bellboy from the hotel who has to deal with Tony’s rather fussy demands for his morning cup of tea; and Amir (Howard Rosenstein), who barges into the suite dressed as an ultra Orthodox Jew, but is actually a Palestinian terrorist who is about to launch a violent attack on a Jewish wedding that is taking place at the hotel. Mr. Goldberg is not just experiencing a whole series of inconvenient interruptions, but somehow, when he least suspects it, is having the entire Middle East conflict played out in front of him in the confines of his hotel suite. The play is cleverly written and well acted by the three performers who make up this cast. In a way, it presents a comparative, symbolic parable of the Middle East conflict

and the reasons why it has simmered between the Israelis and Palestinians for such a long time, with poor Mr. Goldberg representing North America, who has always found itself in the middle of this conflict, and at times felt it has been held hostage by either or both sides. There is plenty of tensions, wars of words, anger, fear and violence (with some of the “bloodletting” that borders on the slapstick, Monty Python-style). “Mr. Goldberg Goes to Tel Aviv” proves that sometimes it takes the performing arts to explain why the Middle East has been embroiled in such a bloody conflict for over seven decades. It may not offer all the answers or easy solutions, but at least it helps offer a better understanding to why this has been taking place for far too long. love pizza. I have always maintained that if I was stranded on an island with only one choice of food, it would be pizza. However, it would not be store bought pizza. The stuff that comes in a cardboard box usually ends up tasting more like the box and less like a pizza. I must admit a lot of the pizzerias in town don’t live up to making a good pizza either. But I’m very fussy and If I pay for something, then I gain the right to critique it. So what makes a good pizza? Ingredients, ingredients and ingredients! Whether you prefer thick or thin crust, the pizza crust should be able to stand on its own. It should not be overpowered by yeast. It should be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The sauce should be thick and rich tasting. It should not be watery and end up making your crust soggy. The sauce should also have some flavour to it.

The home cook does not always have time to make a from-scratch sauce, so choose a good quality thick sauce on the grocer’s shelf. The toppings must follow the same rule. Try three types of cheese instead of just mozzarella, which has texture but very little taste. There is good pepperoni and sausage out there. It may be a little more expensive but the difference in taste is worth it. Try sautéing your onions and mushrooms before putting them on the pizza and you will end up with a moist result on the pizza. Who can resist putting bacon on their pizza? It should be half cooked to release most of the fat and moisture and put on the top of the pizza to finish the cooking. Pizza Dough (double crust recipe made in the bread machine – save half in the freezer for the next pizza night) • 5 cups flour (can substitute 2 cups whole wheat flour) • 2 tsp salt • 1 2/3 cups water • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp yeast

• 1 tbsp sugar • 1 tbsp dried herbs ( optional) Add all the ingredients into the bread machine as recommended by the manufacturer. Conversely, add the dry ingredients into a large bowl, stir to mix and add in the water. Stir to combine. You can also use a stand mixer for this part. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic until doubled in size. Punch down the dough, cut in half, freezing one portion for later use. Press and stretch the dough out to your desired shape and finish the pizza with sauce and toppings. Bake in a hot oven, 425º on a pizza stone or on a cookie sheet. Quick no cook tomato sauce: • 1 28 oz can of Italian tomatoes, preferably with basil • 1 clove of garlic, peeled and smashed • Salt and pepper to taste • Fresh basil and/or pinch of red pepper flakes (optional) Drain the tomatoes in a colander over a bowl. Lightly squeeze the tomatoes to release more of their juices. Reserve the juices for another use. Place the tomatoes in a blender or Cuisinart along with the rest of the ingredients. Blend until smooth. Comment on this article at: www.mtltimes.ca

y daughter and I walked into Stoolies Coffee House on a Friday evening, while “Singalong” was in full swing. A small group of musicians were playing some wellknown tunes on a variety of string instruments, and we sat down and joined in. Stoolies is one of those rare establishments that manages to make you feel immediately at home and welcome. The coffee house has a simple decor, with local artist work on the walls, soft lighting and comfortable seating. Owner and manager Sonia Cho’s friendly personality, professional attention and quirky sense of humour provide the finishing touches towards helping you feel like you’ve discovered a new favourite hangout. She had my normally-shy teenaged daughter giggling and smiling, which is no small feat. She brought us our drinks, an artisanal Kombucha ($5.75) and a St-Anne’s Iced Tea cocktail ($12.75), which we sipped while making our menu choices and singing a few more songs (Beers, shots and wine by the glass are all priced at $5). The menu is simple, yet varied enough in its options that it will satisfy meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. There are breakfast items, which are very reasonably priced, from $3.95 for a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and bacon, to pancakes and French toast at $6.95, and omelets at $7.95. Breakfast includes coffee and is served until 3pm. Lunch and dinner items are also reasonably priced, the most expen-

sive of which is the $12.95 rib-eye steak. There are also daily specials, which probably allow Chef and owner Stephen Howard to further demonstrate his expertise and creativity. I ordered the salmon burger with half-sides of Caesar salad and potatoes($8.50), and my daughter ordered the pasta with fresh Chef’s sauce ($8.95). The pasta dish was a fair-sized portion of tortellini, served with grilled vegetables, perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. My daughter allowed me to taste one of her tortellini, and then proceeded to clean her plate. She then started picking salad and potatoes off of my dish, which was fine, since the portions were generous. The salmon burger was served on a Joe Beef bagel-bun, with an unusually refreshing cranberry, apple and lemon sauce, so good that of I wished there had been more. The accompanying potatoes tasted so much better than the typical side of fries, they were crispy and moist and not too salty. Once our main dishes were done, Sonia was

back to offer us dessert, and we ordered one each of the homemade lemon loaf and banana bread ($5.95 each) with tea. If I could only to use two qualifiers to describe the food at Stoolies I would say fresh and reasonably-priced : two more reasons, on top of the cozy welcoming atmosphere, to want to come back for more. You will certainly find me at Stoolies one summer morning, having breakfast on the soon-tobe-expanded terrace, enjoying the view on the canal. Opening hours will also be extended once spring arrives with the possibility of outdoor eating. Not only does Stoolies offer catering for your special events, but you can also reserve the whole restaurant for a special occasion as well. Pet of the Week Peach, Daisy and Lilly the Three Amigos

P

each, Daisy and Lily are three amigos who are far removed from the wild rats many people would run screaming from. They are not related but still considered 'step-sisters' and are actually known to be affectionate, intelligent and excellent pets. They are low-maintenance, don’t require a lot of room, have great personalities and considered to be in the 'fancy rat' category. "Peach is a 'Curly Dumbo', Daisy is a 'Fancy' and Lilly is a 'Dumbo'," explained Sabryna Danis who lives with them in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in the West Island. "What makes them special is that I can do anything with them. We share meals, we go for car rides and to the pet store. They love to give kisses and they enjoy making us feel better." The three amigos are 'one year and a few months old' and for a rat, that makes them fairly mature -

but they certainly have character and will always be young at heart. "Peach and Daisy are drama queens, as I call them, because when they are being washed they pretend they are being tortured by squeaking...to which I roll my eyes and laugh. Peach will get hyper and Lilly, being fat, will get annoyed and sit on Peach to make her stop, and Peach will just squeak to get unstuck. They squeak when they play rough, but none ever get seriously hurt," offered Sabryna. They also offer a bit of unexpected excitement to their lives.

"One day Lilly escaped the cage when we weren't home and when we got home, she happened to be in the hallway… she spotted us and froze for a minute, thinking we couldn't see her and then she tried to make a run for it." So if you're looking for a pet that "likes to cuddle anytime as long as you have a blanket" and really easy to take care of - then you might want to consider a curly, a fancy or a dumbo! Wines from Argentina and Chile

rgentina’s red wines are one of the great commerical stories of the past few years— and for good reason. When it comes to bottles that cost between $9 and $20, Argentina’s reds, notably its signature grape, Malbec, provide lots of depth of flavor and complexity. The Malbecs are lush with a berry-rich pepperiness. On contrast the Syrahs offer dark, brooding fruit and smoke or game notes; and the Cabernet Sauvignons tend to combine powerful cassis flavors with a hint of bell pepper. They are wines that are well versatile with the hearty foods of winter: juicy roasts,

rare steaks, braised lamb shanks and hearty stews. Most of Argentina’s well known reds come from one region: Mendoza, a high plateau on the western edge of the country, in

The best of these Cabernets combine ripe, New World-style fruit with Old World touches of mineral and spice. Carmenere, originally grown in Bordeaux before phylloxera wiped it out in the 1800s, survived in Chile, and is typically marked by plummy fruit, pepper notes with a fleshy, caressing mouthfeel. Switheart: The Watercolour Artistry and Animal Activism of Loretta Swit by Mies Hora with Loretta Swit

F

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

or fans of classic television – especially classic television from the 1970s – actress Loretta Swit is a familiar face, especially for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan throughout the 11-year run of the much revered CBS series “M*A*S*H” (in fact, she and Alan Alda were the only members of the “M*A*S*H” cast to have that distinction). However, there is so much more to Loretta Swit than the role of the shrill, by-the-book martinet head nurse of the 4077th that she is chiefly known for. Since the age of six, she has been an accomplished artist. And for as long as she can remember, Ms. Swit has been a passionate animal activist, and champions many causes that advocates for the rights of animals and to prevent widespread cruelty to animals. For her efforts as an animal activist, Ms. Swit has been recognized with many honours and awards, the most recent was the Betty White Award, which she received last December from the organization Actors & Others for Animals. “Being an animal activist is not something you take up in a hurry. The need is there, so you just do it,” said Ms. Swit during a recent phone interview from California. “I wanted to fight for animal rights all my life, because cruelty towards animals takes on many different forms, and I am against all of them.” Combining two her life’s passions – art and animal activism – resulted in the creation of Switheart, an attractive coffee table book that features 65 watercolour paintings – which are reproduced in full colour -- that Ms. Swit has done over a 30-year period, which are mainly of different animals that she has owned, known or rescued (along with a few floral still lifes). Each of the paintings that are featured in the book are accompanied with a brief backgrounder by Ms. Swit that tells the story behind the creation of the painting in question, as well as its respective subject matter. Ms. Swit admits it wasn’t an easy process to select the 65 paintings that made the cut for the book, out of the countless animal portraits and floral still lifes she painted for so many years. “There was no way to calculate the exact amount of paintings I did. I was very harsh and demanding on • February 18, 2017

myself when I did them, and I trashed a lot of paintings that didn’t meet up to my standards,” she said. “And I haven’t kept many of them because they were done as a way to raise funds to help the many animal activist causes that I support.” However, she also admits that her favorite painting that is showcased in the book is not of a dog or a cat … but of a rooster. “My number 1 choice is my painting of Chutzpah the

Loretta Swit

rooster, because it was the first animal painting that I added a colorfully vibrant background to it. It opened up to me a whole new way of working as a painter,” she said. “When you paint a portrait of an animal, it’s a way of establishing a close relationship between you and the subject, as if it is an actual live pet.” Proceeds from the book will benefit the Switheart Animal Alliance Foundation, and the many organizations, charities and programs under the foundation’s umbrella that are dedicated to ending animal cruelty and suffering. Another topic that Ms. Swit is just as passionate to talk about is her 11 years as part of the cast of “M*A*S*H”, and is happy to note that since it officially ended its run in 1983 with its historic 2 ½-hour finale, reruns of the series have been continually airing on syndication around the world (including History Television in Canada, which airs two episodes every weekday afternoon). “All of the cast members of ‘M*A*S*H’ were very close like it was a family in its own right. And to viewers, we were like everybody’s family, and they trusted us because we gave them a familial feeling with every episode,” she said. She also noted how the writers included personal characteristics to each character (Margaret was even given a sense of compassion towards animals, which was exemplified in one episode midway through the show’s run when she secretly took care of a dog that strayed onto the grounds of the 4077th). As well, she remembers the moment dur-

ing a summer hiatus from the series in 1976, when it was decided to take the development of Margaret Houlihan’s character to the next level, especially when it came to her illicit relationship with Major Frank Burns (played by the late Larry Linville). “The evolution of Major Margaret Houlihan was an eventual, necessary process, and not accidental,” she said. “The producers and the writers realized that her relationship with Frank Burns was a funny joke that can only be done so many times; and the more intelligent Margaret became, the more sillier Frank became.” “So while I was on hiatus in New York during the summer of 1976, I participated in a conference call in which we discussed Margaret’s future. So they asked me what would happen if Margaret came back from R&R in Tokyo and told Frank that she got engaged to a single guy who outranked him. I told them that Frank would not be a happy camper, and would probably rip the doors off the mess tent when she told him about it.And that’s the scenario they used, which provoked quite a lot of funny episodes afterwards,” added Ms. Swit. Ms. Swit has a special place in her heart for all of her fellow “M*A*S*H” cast members, including the late William Christopher – aka the 4077th’s resident chaplain Father Mulcahy – who passed away from cancer last December 31 at the age of 84. “Bill was born to play the part of Father Mulcahy,” she said. “He was the perfect prototype of what a military chaplain should be like; in fact, there were many viewers who said that Father Mulcahy brought people back to the church. He was such a beloved and adored person who approached his role with a great deal of humanity, humor, brilliance and strength. I haven’t fully recovered from the loss felt by his passing.” Currently, Ms. Swit is in rehearsal for leading roles in two upcoming stage productions: “Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey” and “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” (which she hopes to tour with across Canada in the near future). And she also hinted at putting together a sequel to Switheart. “I plan to put together a second volume, which will have all the paintings that were rejected for this book, including an abundant choice of rooster paintings,” she jokingly added.
