ontreal's Les Canadiennes have been crowned the CWHL's 2017 Clarkson Cup champions after a 3-1 win against the Calgary Inferno on March 5th at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. The win was the fourth time in the teams' history to take home the cup and it was even more rewarding given that last year, when the two teams also met for the final game, Calgary won 8-3.

Les Canadiennes dominated the play except for a very intense 3rd period when Calgary, trailing 2-0, turned the steam on and scored their first goal with 7:43 still left in the period - leaving the possibility of tying the game within reach and putting the game into overtime. WEDNESDAY

Standout performances came from Montreal's forward Katia Clement-Heydra who scored the first goal at 12:36 of the 1st period, followed by forward Marie-Philip Poulin scoring at 5:24 with another goal on an empty net in the last minutes of the 3rd period, and Goalie Charline Labonté who kept Calgary off the scoreboard board on more than several opportunities. They might have led the way but Les Canadiennes' win was truly a team effort. Julie Chu assisted on Poulin's two goals and looked like lightning on her skates throughout the game and assists by Noémie Marin, Cathy Chartrand and Karell Emard were all part of what gave them the win. Caroline Oullette and Ann-Sophie Bettez , although they both didn't make the scoreboard, played a phenomenal game, defining what team players are - opportunities were there for them to make a run on the nets, but they chose to play it right.
www.mtltimes.ca
Calgary's only goal came from Jill Saulnier at 12:57 in the 3rd period, a goal that could have been the game changer as the Inferno really put on the heat and had Montreal scrambling in their end zone for a nail-biting finish to the game. Goalie Emerance Maschmeyer played an outstanding game and if it wasn't for Poulin's shot bouncing off her glove and then trickling down into the nets, the game could have been tied into the 3rd period and the outcome different - but it didn’t happen.

Les Canadiennes had a great season; wearing their new Bleu/Blanc/Rouge uniforms as official partners of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens, playing a regular season game at the Bell Centre last December, three other home games at the Habs training center at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard - and with the news in February that the CWHL entered into a partnership with the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) things are looking up, not only for the team but for Women's hockey in general.

since 1999, did not get a chance this season to become the all-time leading goal scorer of the CWHL. At 130 career goals, the Montreal Canadiennes forward ended the season tied with retired Brampton Thunder forward Jayna Hefford. There has been rumors of Oullette retiring, but we hope she puts her skates on next season and earns the well-deserved title.

E Day Montreal brought together thousands of young Anglophone students who share the dream of building a better world at a rally at Théâtre Saint-Denis on Friday, Feb. 24th in a celebration of youthful exuberance, hope, and the power of trans-formative change. A separate event for Francophone students took place the day before at the prestigious 100 year old theatre located near the downtown UQAM campus.
“We Day” was started in 2007 by Craig and Marc Kielburger, the brothers and activists who founded the non-profit organization WE, formerly Free the Children, with the goal of empowering youth to make positive change happen in their own backyards and around the globe. WEDNESDAY

WE Day Montreal 2017 - Dante Scott and Jamie Bloch More than 2000 students filled the storied theatre for the 5th straight year in a row at WE Day Montreal, a far cry perhaps from the numbers at stadium-filled WE Day events elsewhere. However, the message that together WE can make a big difference was no less powerful for the smaller venue. We Day Montreal featured the inspiring story of teen anti-bullying activist Lynelle Cantwell who hit back at cyber-bullies who had voted her 'Ugliest Girl' in her school by writing an open letter on her facebook site, saying that she felt sorry for them. Motivational speaker and author Spencer West, a legless 31 year-old man who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise $750,000 for clean-water programs in Kenya - he's raised over $500,000 so far - was brimming with excitement at WE Day Montreal. Republic Records artist and winner of the Voice Jordan Smith sang Somebody to Love with the G-Major St. George's School Glee Club to the roar of crowd's approval. 8
Among the 24 speakers who addressed the enthusiastic crowd was award-winning actress and activist Mia Farrow who spoke about the need to push ahead to make meaningful change happen. “Any problem you look at or any issue you look at for long enough and hard enough with all your heart and soul, you will begin to see solutions and you will begin to see where you can put your shoulder and push,” she said during her presentation. “I think that’s the most important thing I can convey to an activist, where to push.” To participate in WE Day events, students must first be registered in the WE Schools program which brings young people together with educators, giving them the practical tools and guidance they need to become effective advocates for change to make the world a better place.

How to sell high: Avoid these three mistakes when selling your home
WEDNESDAY
March 8, 2017
MONTREAL - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they're even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home's "first impression", and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it's imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a home seller as pricing too low.
Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it's own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled "Home sellers: How to Get the Price You Want( and Need)".This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. ontreal was the first stop on the North American tour of two incredible artists - Rickie Lee Jones, a legend in her own time and Madeleine Peyroux, surely a legend in the making. On Wednesday March 1st at the Theatre Maisonneuve in Place des Arts, fans and admirers were treated to an intimate evening of soulful music that had everyone feeling it. It might not have been an Osheaga type crowd, as the audience was clearly an older and more 'sophisticated' group. There was no dancing in the aisles, but many grooved in their seats, some with their eyes closed in moments, soaking in the sounds. WEDNESDAY

Madeleine Peyroux
Our seats, seven rows in front of center stage, offered us the opportunity to witness the two gifted women up close, with Rickie leading off the first part of show. The lights dimmed at 8:06 pm as she took to the stage with her musicians, Mike Dylan on percussion and Cliff Hines on guitar (both now also living in New Orleans) - two very talented artists clearly in sync with the lady, who is not one to follow any preset notions and chooses to go with her instincts and emotions of the moment. Being the first stop of the tour, there were a few technical kinks to work out in the beginning, but that was quickly resolved by the team behind her and the ability of her musicians to flow with her. Wearing sparkly earrings and a long, black velvet dress with short sleeves showing a tattoo on her right arm and a slit along her left leg exposing her red sneakers, she picked up her acoustic guitar and went right into 'The Last Chance Texaco' from her 1979 debut album. Her unique voice and eclectic phrasing immediately captivating the audience and set-

ting the tone for the night, a night that seemed to connect metaphors with meanings tied to the political upheavals in the US with questions like 'what now?', and 'where do we go from here?'. Rickie expressed her anger and concern about the troubling events in different ways throughout her show, perhaps even with her first song with lyrics like 'But you ran out of gas, Down the road a piece, Then the battery went dead, And now the cable won't reach'.
She followed with an array of songs from some of her 15 critically acclaimed albums, putting down her acoustic guitar at times to hit the keys of a black grand piano or strapping on her electric guitar during an encore. Songs like 'We Belong Together' from her 1981 Pirates album were standouts as well as 'On Saturday Afternoons in 1963' from her 1979 album, which resonated with melancholy, transporting us to another place in time - a nostalgic look back to our childhood, with its regrets and/or joys and what has transpired since then.

For 'Smile' (from the Charlie Chaplin 1936 soundtrack) she took to the mic, accompanied only by her guitarist for a very raw, moving performance that could easily have been interpreted as part of the thread of feelings of concern and messages of hope in the wake of current events. 'Ugly Man' from her 2003 album 'The Evening of My Best day', was clearly a strong statement in itself. She wrote the song about former President George W. Bush, who she felt was endangering free speech when he enacted the 'Patriot Act' after the September 11th attacks in 2001, giving the government expanded powers at the expense of civil liberties - and on this night she said although she had first written it for Bush, it easily applied to the antics of today. 'He'll look at you
and tell you lies, He grew up to be like his father, Ugly inside‌'
After close to 90 minutes of Rickie Lee Jones' magic, she left the stage but soon returned for an encore, starting off with 'Mink Coat At The Bus Stop' on her electric guitar, with a message of love and understanding, the need to pay attention to all human beings and how we are all equal. It was followed by 'Blinded by the Hunt' from her 2015 album of originals 'The Other Side of Desire' - a rendition that particularly moved me. Back on acoustic guitar she performed the last song of her set, ‘Falling Up' from her 2007 album 'The Sermon on Exhibition Boulevard', inspired from Lee Cantelon's book 'The Words' - a modern rendering of the words of Christ, but this year she is calling it 'Falling Apart'.

CONCERT
After a short intermission for the stage to be reset, Madeleine Peyroux took the stage with her musicians; the very talented and accomplished Jon Herington on guitar (the guitarist of choice with Steely Dan since 1999) and Barak Mori on stand-up bass who is originally from Tel Aviv, Israel and is now one of the New York jazz scene's most sought after musicians. There was a wonderful communion between her and her musicians, who also sang back-up vocals, and together they produced a seamless execution of musical arrangements. She was first joined by Rickie to sing their cover version of Dave Essex's 'Rock On' which they teamed up on recently to address the challenging issues in their country - and was released with a very powerful, politically charged video about women's rights and the resistance to oppression. Its message of empowerment and hope was unmistakably part of the thread running through the show; 'Where do we go from here? Which is the way that's clear?' Madeleine's part of the show was a class act all the way. She is a highly esteemed performer who last year celebrated 20 years since her internationally acclaimed debut album 'Dreamland' was released in 1996, showcasing her genre-crossing approach to standards from the 1920s and '30s. Over the course of her career she has gained the well-deserved respect of the many acclaimed musicians she has worked with, but especially from her dedicated fans. With her dusky, seductively expressive voice and distinctive style blending pop, jazz, blues standards, she picked up her acoustic guitar, warming up an already receptive audience with a few of her standards. There was a connection and intimacy with her musicians that flowed out into the theatre. Madeleine's approach was sensual, but also tied in with some subtle humor. She performed several blues songs and also a few from her 2004 Careless Love album; 'Don't Wait Too Long', Josephine Baker's 'J'ai Deux Amours' and a beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen's 'Dance Me to the End of Love'. One song from her 2009 Bare Bones album that particularly pulled me and my spouse in, who has been a longtime follower of Madeleine's, was a mystical version of 'Our Lady of Pigalle'. At one point the trio performed the classic 'Just A Gigolo', coming together with humorous harmonies and lightening things up - but it was 20

Rickie Lee Jones when subtle digs against Trump were thrown in that the not-so-subtle laughter from the audience kicked in. Her version of 'Danny Boy', of which she dedicated to the 'departed Democratic mentors', was the clearest message tying a knot in the thread of the evening. All in all, it was a wonderful evening and I was especially appreciative of being witness to two very strong, empathic and inspiring women. Rock on! Drinking wine on a budget
W
hen you tell someone that you write about wine for a passion, the first question they ask me: Are you drunk, like, all the time? (Answer: Of course, because that makes for the best cliché.) The second question they always ask is: What are the best wines you can buy on a budget? Do you have a secret to finding good wine deals? The answer isn't always exactly what they want to hear. While there are certainly still some steals to be found in the world of wine, randomly choosing bottles for $15 will probably lead in disappointment. While you might encounter a few cheap wines that outperform the price, too many are heavy, sweet or strangely tasting chemical, with an edge of straight ethanol or an aftertaste of nail polish remover. At under $15, it's a matter of getting what you pay for...or, more precisely, not getting what you're not paying for. Grapes cost money, land costs money, labor costs money, winemaking equipment costs money, bottles and corks or caps cost money and marketing costs money. And do not forget the huge tax chunk that the SAQ takes. After you add all of these costs, that does not leave much money to grow quality grapes in quality land. Choosing to spend a little more on wine is a bit like choosing to spend a little more on, say, bread from artisanal bakeries instead of buying the bagged frozen stuff. Personally, I'd rather have something delicious— even if I can't afford to have it quite as often. But if you can kick your budget more than $15 and under $20 per bottle, you can start drinking quite well if you shop wisely. Are there any tricks to choosing the best not-too expansible bottles? Sure: www.mtltimes.ca
WINE
Taste as much wine as you can. Get a sense of regions and grapes you like, so you can stock up on favorites and communicate with SAQ Staff about what you're looking for. Be adventurous: Importers can markup familiar wine brands; plenty of people will still buy those bottles. But a cheaper price can help sell hard-to-pronounce grapes like Blaufränkisch, so you may find good deals among the shelves stocked with wines from lesserknown grapes and regions. Find a good SAQ— one with friendly, knowledgeable staff. I do not have to tell you this but not all the SAQs are made the same. I have 3 SAQs that are among my favorites in Montreal. They are the SAQ Selection in the Atwater Market, SAQ Selection in 440 de Maissoneuve in downtown and the Selection in Rockland. All of them have the largest specialty sections and have very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Skip the oak: In many situations, oak barrels drive up the price of wine. Unless you're really craving toasty flavors, consider a unoaked wine or one that has been aged in old oak barrels. They are much cheaper. Buy at SAQ Depot. You can get a discounts depending on the quantity of bottles that you buy. For example, if you buy 3 bottles you get 3% off; 10% off with the purchase of 6 bottles; 15% with the purchase of 12 bottles. In addition, you have some wine selections that are not available in other SAQs.
