Time to put an end to Daylight Saving Time?
J
Do we really need day light savings anymore?
By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca www.mtltimes.ca
ust last weekend it was time to 'Spring Forward' once again. Daylight Saving Time (DST) began on Sunday March 12th at 2:00 am, when clocks were turned forward one hour to 3:00 am local time across most of North America, Europe and even parts of the Middle East. Only about 70% percent of countries follow DST - and it is possible the other 30%, with their clocks unchanged, are actually healthier and happier for it. WEDNESDAY

Sunrise and sunset will arrive one hour later on our timepieces than the day before, so for many people waking up at their scheduled times for work or school, it will be darker in the morning - but it will be lighter in the evening for the ride home and running errands. Then in early November we will 'Fall Behind' again when DST ends and the throes of winter are within sight. But it also making us unhealthy, costing us money and even putting us in dangerous situations.
Although the idea of daylight saving time was tossed around for different reasons since the late 1700's, it really began during World War I, when in 1916 Germany became the first country to officially use the energy saving measure in an effort to conserve coal. Then Britain, along with several other European countries followed suit, but it wasn’t until 1918 when the time change crossed the ocean to North America. It was then repealed after the war and only really standardized in the mid1960's, but the history of DST is fragmented with information about when and where it was first implemented. Nonetheless, daylight saving time is now observed in most Canadian provinces and the laws related to it are a really a provincial matter. It was first used to save energy during war time, so why do we still bother with it now?
Numerous studies have shown that the hour of sleep we lose by 'springing ahead' can seriously affect our health. They show an increase in heart attacks and strokes linked to the time change, there is a significant increase in car accidents in the days following and even an increase in work-related accidents.
clocks which rely on light - and time changes just mess us up with sudden disruptions to our sleep. When our body clocks are interrupted by DST it can cause a decrease in our performance and concentration levels, as well as an increase in fatigue.
A recent online survey by Léger Marketing for Bon Matin Bread indicated close to 58% of Quebecers could take up to a week to adapt to the changes. It showed that DST has a negative effect on our behavior with up to 35% of those polled reporting difficulty waking up, 21% reporting a lack of energy and 13% finding themselves feeling very irritable after the clocks are moved forward - or back for that matter. It even affects cows. Farmers have have been opponents of DST for years because it confuses the cows and their schedules and creates other drawbacks in everyday farm life. Because of that, the province of Saskatchewan does not change its clocks and there are areas in other provinces including the eastern part of Quebec’s North Shore who have chosen to opt out.

The loss of daylight in the mornings also means some children have to wait for their school buses in the dark - a concern to many parents. The extra hour of light at the end of the day might make it easier for children to participate in outdoors activities in the evenings, but it can also make putting them to bed more challenging.

really interesting this year thanks to special guests speakers and trainers. Maxime Paulhus Gosselin played his college ball at Davidson a NCAA Division 1 program from 2005-2009. Now, he is a motivational speaker for children with whom he shares life lessons. The Sun Youth campers were extremely pleased to be coached by him and listened very carefully to his wisdom about basketball. Clearly the campers will be able to grow and improve their play, their attitude and their self-confidence from the advice that Maxime gave them. Afterwards, trainer Nancy Forestal made the kids work hard. Through endurance exercises, she helped the kids to improve their motor skills. They also had the visit of two students from McGill’s Trauma Prevention Program who encouraged the kids to think about prevention when practicing basketball. On behalf of Sun Youth, we would like to thank these special guests for volunteering their time and inspiring our campers.
This year, more than thirty kids, a record number compared to previous years, participated in the camp. Boys and girls, aged 8 to15, were able to improve their play skills through activities such as drills, passing, shooting and dribbling. In addition, they also had fitness training designed to increase endurance and improve strength and stamina. The camp, run by Rodney Skerritt, Sun Youth’s basketball coordinator and Kara De La Perralle, Assistant Director of Sports and Recreation, was focused at understanding basketball at a conceptual level, which is good for kids who are new to the sport as well as competitive athletes who are trying to refine their game. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale WEDNESDAY
March 15, 2017
MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn
prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

The Perfect Beef Irish Stew recipe
WEDNESDAY

ST PATRICK’S DAY
C
elebrating St. Patrick’s Day. We pinch each other if we forget to wear something green, we make green foods regardless if they have anything to do with Ireland, and we adapt traditional Irish recipes to our own taste.
The last is the case with this Irish beef stew. As any Irish person will tell you, lamb is the preferred meat for a good Irish stew. But here in the states we eat a lot more beef than lamb, so when we want to make a stew to celebrate all things Irish, it’s usually done with beef.
This particular stew has all of the classic trimmings of a good stew—meat, stock, plenty of root vegetables—with the addition of some Guinness extra stout, for its malty flavor and some Irish authenticity.
The recipe originally came to me through my friend Tomas, who got it from a chef friend in Europe, who had adapted a Bon Appetit recipe for stew by adding Guinness and some red wine. Every time we make this recipe it gets raves!

ST PATRICK’S DAY
Irish Beef Stew Recipe
Prep time: 25 minutesCook time: 1 hour, 50 minutes Serves 4 to 6 Please use beef chuck stew meat that is well marbled with fat. Lean stew meat will end up too dry. Save prep time by prepping the onions, carrots, and potatoes while the stock with beef is simmering in step 2.
INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 pounds well-marbled chuck beef stew meat, cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks 3 teaspoons of salt (more to taste) 1/4 cup olive oil 6 large garlic cloves, minced
1 Brown the beef: Sprinkle about a teaspoon of salt over the beef pieces. Heat the olive oil in a large (6 to 8 quart), thick-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Pat dry the beef with paper towels and working in batches, add the beef (do not crowd the pan, or the meat will steam and not brown) and cook, without stirring, until well browned on one side, then use tongs to turn the pieces over and brown on another side.
4 cups beef stock or broth 2 cups water 1 cup of Guinness extra stout 1 cup of hearty red wine 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon dried thyme 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 bay leaves 2 tablespoons butter 3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled, cut into 1/2inch pieces (about 7 cups) 1 large onion, chopped (1 1/2 to 2 cups) 2 cups 1/2-inch pieces peeled carrots and/or parsnips (3 to 4 carrots or parsnips) 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Sauté the onions and carrots until the onions are golden, about 15 minutes. Set aside until the beef stew in step 2 has simmered for one hour.
4 Add onions, carrots, potatoes to beef stew, simmer: Add the onions, carrots, and the potatoes to the beef stew. Add black pepper and two teaspoons of salt. Simmer uncovered until vegetables and beef are very tender, about 40 minutes. Discard the bay leaves. Tilt pan and spoon off any excess fat.
2 Add garlic and sauté, then add stock, Transfer stew to serving bowls. Add more salt water, Guinness, and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with parsley and wine, tomato paste, serve. sugar, thyme Worcestershire, bay leaves, simmer: Add garlic to the pot with the beef and sauté 30 seconds or until fragrant. Add the beef stock, water, Guinness, red wine, tomato paste, sugar, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and bay leaves. Stir to combine. Bring mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to the lowest setting, then cover and cook at a bare simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 3 Sauté onions, carrots in separate pan: While the pot of meat and stock is simmering, melt the butter in another pot over medium heat. Add the onions and carrots.
