his past April, the Montreal Canadiens partnered with the CWHL's Montreal Stars hockey team - who are now called 'Les Canadiennes'. The transition from the 'Montreal Stars', an already famous name in women’s hockey, to Les Canadiennes, allows the female hockey players the chance to wear an iconic 'C' of their own, as well as to sport the 'Bleu, Blanc, Rouge' - as a member of the Canadiens’ family. The 2016-17 season will mark the 10th season for the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. Season tickets for the milestone 2016-17 season are now on sale. A few weeks ago I was sitting on a terrace in downtown Montreal enjoying a cool drink with some friends who were in town. Then the winds shifted. Overflowing garbage from the back alley smelled like, well, death. "Is there a corpse in there?" asked one friend. They gagged, pinching their noses as we left to find some clean air,

THEN & NOW Gilles-Hocquart building Former HEC Building Montreal Built in the neo-classic style, the old edifice of Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) of Montreal is situated opposite of what was once one of the most beautiful city squares in an area of the French-Canadian Dick Nieuwendyk elite. During the late 19th century local French business Special leaders saw a need for an institution of higher learning. Among them were Nazaire Dupuis, founder of the Dupuis department store, and Charles-Theodore Viau, who owned the bakery that invented the Empire cookie - better known as the Whippet. Based on the plans by architects Louis-Zéphirin Gauthier and Joseph-ÉgildeCésaire Daoust, construction started with the laying of the cornerstone on October 22, 1908, in the presence of Sir Lomer Gouin, the 13th premier of the province of Quebec. The Commerce School, was considered a critical investment in helping francophones compete on an equal footing in the mostly English speaking world of business. When it opened, the institution of higher learning had 32 students. HEC offered students everything from chemistry and physics labs, to a replicated business office that taught practical hands-on experience. In 1960 HEC was the first school in North America that owned an IBM 1620 computer, which was the size of a kitchen stove. After HEC moved to its new home on the Decelles street in 1970, the building hosted Dawson College until 1988 and afterwards by various departments and agencies.

École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) - 1910

HEC is a business school of the University of Montreal, and historically the oldest in commerce and administration in Canada and one of the largest in North America. The language of instruction is French, although courses and programs are also offered in English and Spanish.

TIFF -Toronto International Film Festival

A

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

Spaniard directs a movie set in Victorian London, the Walt Disney studio produces a movie set in Uganda featuring some local actors and directed by an Indian director, a Chilean directs a film about an iconic American former first lady, and much more. Cinema has really become a global creative phenomenon, and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is, in turn, reflecting this new character of filmmaking. Well, one can say that foreign stars and directors were attracted to Hollywood since an early time: Charlie Chaplin from Britain, Mary Pickford from Canada, Marlene Dietrich from Germany, Hedy Lamarr from Austria, Greta Garbo from Sweden, and many more. Hollywood is still a dominant force, of course, since it is also located in the world's most powerful country, but what has changed is the scope and focus of film production. Even American movies have changed in this regard. They have a far more international flavour today, and they have incorporated themes and plots that are critical of American policies, the latest example has been

nfortunately summer will soon come to an end. But the approach of fall is a time to think about what sort of routine you will “fall” back into. Why not take this opportunity to discover a whole new routine? In order to succeed in sticking to a new routine or lifestyle habit, set a goal to which you can be accountable. Make sure your goal is SMART: S-specific, M-measurable, A-actionoriented, R-realistic and Ttimely. Often people set goals that are too broad, such as “I want to lose 10 pounds”. This goal does not tell you how you are going to lose the weight. You may try to reach this goal by changing how you eat and how physically active you are, but making major changes all at once may become overwhelming and the new routine may only last for a short while. A smaller goal such as “I will walk 30 minutes every second day” may be an easier starting point and one that will eventually help you reach the overall goal of losing weight. Another example of a SMART goal would • September 17, 2016

It will take some time, but these goals will eventually become your new routines or lifestyle habits, and then you can move forward

cause you want to have more energy, feel better or stay healthier longer so you can play with your kids or watch your grandchildren grow up. If you are one of those people who often skips breakfast, fall is the perfect time to change this habit and discover a whole new morning routine. After an all-night “fast” our body needs energy and nutrients in the morning to kick start the day, and a balanced breakfast is the perfect way to accomplish this. A balanced meal includes at least three of the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide. As an example, your goal could be: “To eat a balanced breakfast within one to two hours of waking”, and some reasons WHY you may want to accomplish this goal may be because it will increase your energy levels, make your mornings more productive or help decrease overeating later in the day. o be able to carry out its activities and help hundreds of people daily, Sun Youth heavily relies on volunteers. Brenda Bailey is one of these very generous and reliable volunteers. Since March 2015, she gently welcomes families needing food assistance at Sun Youth every Friday from 9am to 3pm. Mrs. Bailey is retired from the TD Bank where she worked for more than 38 years, devoting the last 25 years of her career as a commercial account manager. It is through the TD Bank Volunteer Grant Program that Mrs. Bailey was encouraged to volunteer at Sun Youth for the first time. At the time, she

was still working and helped prepare the food baskets at Christmas time. The TD Bank's Volunteer Grant Program supports the volunteer efforts of its employees. It is available to both active employees and retired employees. Through this program, an employee that accumulates 40 hours of volunteering in an organization can apply for a $500 grant from the TD Bank for that organization. Thus, since March 2015, Mrs. Bailey applied twice for a TD Volunteer Grant and Sun Youth received two $500 grants on her behalf. Mrs. Bailey is very proud of the initiative of the TD Bank. She is also very proud to be a volunteer

at Sun Youth.Volunteering allows her to give back to the community, while creating great friendships with other volunteers, as well as with employees. She thinks that it is not only a benefit for the community, but also for herself. Both her volunteer experiences and her work at the TD Bank showed her the importance of the quality of the relationships we maintain with colleagues, volunteers and clients. Congratulations to the TD Bank for its program and a huge thank you to the employees who participate throughout their careers and who choose to pursue it in retirement. You make all the difference!
