Legalized marijuana is coming, and so is business opportunity

ne of the Liberal promises during the last campaign seems on the way to becoming a reality, although not before next year. Legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes should have been tabled this week in the House of Commons. And if everything goes as planned, before July 1, 2018, anxious cannabis fans after years of doing it outside the law, would finally be able to consume this drug with no more restrictions than what you currently have to drink beer or smoke a regular cigarette. Legalizing marijuana would have a substantial economic effect, both for the government which would be able to get taxes from what would become a regular product subjected to sales tax and

presence in Quebec, and therefore like many other large and small pot entrepreneurs, the next big question would be how the Quebec government will regulate the marketing of the product. A report requested by the provincial government some time ago mentioned two possibilities: government owned stores—in the same style of the current liquor stores, but they would be a separate set of establishments exclusively devoted to cannabis—and allowing private retailers to be in charge, although with

set foot in Montreal, it was raided by the police and its owner Marc

Emery arrested. Of course, that was a sort of activism-motivated move more than a real attempt to establish a commercial enterprise in the city. Other businesses already involved somehow in the pot trade, however, are taking a more strategic approach, just waiting until the legislation is put in place. According to a report from the Financial Post section of The Gazette this week, “Shares of marijuana companies like Canopy Growth Corp. have surged more than fourfold over the past 12 months amid investor optimism over recreational sales, which Canaccord Genuity Group Inc. said in November could reach $6 billion annually by 2021.” Canopy, one of the largest companies in the pot business already has a

strict regulations. The Quebec government hasn’t made its mind yet on this issue and very likely; it would wait until the legislative process is more advanced in Ottawa. It may also consult and see what the other provinces may be planning to do. The experience of other jurisdictions could also be used. Some states in the USA have legalized marijuana, but not the federal government there. Uruguay was the first country in the world to

legalize the drug for recreational use in 2013 under the charismatic José Mujica. continued on Page 8

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

who sell to minors. These restrictions are reasonable: after all, most marijuana consumption is done through smoking (in the state of Washington more than 60 percent is smoked: people making their own joints, or buying already-packed marijuana cigarettes; only 13 percent consume it in an edible product and less than 10 percent as a drink ingredient). And when it comes to tar deposit in one’s lungs marijuana is not different from nicotine or any inhaled smoke for that matter. In any case, especially for Montreal, a city that has embraced alternative lifestyles and embarked on the exploration of new experiences for a long time, the legalization of marijuana would be regarded by most as a long overdue measure, after all, we all know that prohibition never actually worked.

Francofolies, l'amour for the French song The "family photo" with the artists present at the press conference

T

here are two fun ways of learning French, yeah, we know, find a Québécoise lover, many people would immediately say. But then there is the second way: listening to French songs. And if you want something more than that, a sort of immersion into a French environment, well, in that case, the best advice would be to attend some of the concerts being held during the eleven days of the Francofolies de Montréal, from June 8 to 18, this coming summer. The lineup for the indoor shows was unveiled this past Tuesday at a press conference. As in previous editions of this French song festival, a diversity of styles and genres is its main characteristic. Let's see what some of the shows will present: Pierre Lapointe's "Amours, délices et orgues" is described as "An extraordinary project somewhere between song, design, dance, and monologue" (Maison symphonique, June 14 to 17, 8 p.m.). For his part, Claude

Dubois, another big name in the Quebec music scene, will present a show called "Dubois en liberté." The show is described as "An unforgettable evening with a true giant of Québécois song, blessed with one of the most remarkable voices, and a ton of immortal classics" (Theatre Maisonneuve, June 16, 8 p.m.). For something different, what about some Quebec hiphop? Rymz (opening act Souldia) will be at Metropolis on June 9, at 9 p.m. And MHD described as the "New phenomenon of French rap" (opening act Misa) will be at Metropolis, June 15 and 16, at 9 p.m. Young singer Émile Bilodeau (opening act Jerome St-Kant) will be at L'Astral, on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. And of course there will the presence of some well-known stars such as Catherine Major with her show "La maison du monde" (opening act Sarah Toussaint-Léveillé) presented as "An artist in eternal evolution" she will be at the Cinquième Salle on June 14 at 8:30 p.m.

Also in this category, we find Richard Séguin, described as "an ageless artist… (who) presents his most recent album in a show featuring unique staging" (Cinquième Salle, June 16, 8:30 p.m.). The musical theatre will also be part of the program this time: "Demain matin, Montréal m'attend" described as "The legendary musical comedy by Michel Tremblay and François Dompierre… reborn on the stage of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde" (June 13-16, and June 22, 8 p.m.; June 17 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and June 25, 3 p.m.) The Francofolies also features a series of outdoor free concerts whose lineup will be announced in a few weeks. Tickets for the 29th edition of the Francofolies are on sale since this week. There are currently 18 UNESCO sites in Canada. The city of Montreal has taken the first step towards UNESCO status by submitting Mount Royal's candidacy to a special committee of Parks Canada which evaluates proposals from across the country. If the committee recommends Mount Royal as a World Heritage site, then the request will be passed on to UNESCO which will make a final decision. The process is long and only comes up every decade or so. The last time Canada updated its repertoire of sites deserving protection was in 2004. In the meantime the organization is keeping its fingers crossed and hopes that Montrealers will step up and show their appreciation of the mountain by signing the petition.

Zachart-Deom of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake said she was pleased to join the alliance of Francophones and Anglophones on behalf of the Mohawks in supporting UNESCO status for Mount Royal. "This mountain behind us is in the heart of Mohawk territory," she said, noting that the territory had never been ceded. She said the mountain's history goes back far in history, in fact, to pre-history. "This is the year of inclusion and we really appreciate being included," she said.

5 Bishop street merchants in a battle with the city of Montreal and the STM to stay in business

Now, between De Maisonneuve and SainteCatherine Street, the work has left the street in a disastrous state, monopolizing parking spaces and making pedestrian access to the area difficult and dissuasive. Not surprisingly, the street’s shops have seen their business drop considerably. Since the work began, the street has been practically deserted and worse yet, the work is set to be

completed only in 2020, a period of approximately 42 months. 5 of the street’s restaurants and bars, namely, Mesa 14, Ferrari, the Gourmet Burger, Kafein, Craft and grilled cheese face a difficult situation: if things remain as they are, they will be forced into bakruptcy. Yoga for Anxious times Sponsored

I

By Julie Nadler Montreal Times

was in Boston to do training in Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® with Jennifer Reis of Kripalu. I wanted to bring this style of yoga to our studio but also I wanted to see if it would help with my own issue with anxiety and panic attacks. Previously, I had had only one experience of a Nidra class. Over the next five days, there would be a full class daily. On day three everything changed for me. I had finally slept well the night before; I was focused on what was happening there rather than worrying about what was happening back in Montreal; I became easy about not knowing what was to happen next and allowing the teacher to be my guide; I gave up my need to maintain my illusion of being in control: I became focused on the moment and stopped stressing about the trip home. Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® is a guided meditation that systematically guides and relaxes the participant at every level of being including physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual layers (called five koshas).

Through the use of breath awareness, body scanning, and imagery, Yoga Nidra invites you to become aware of each layer of being without needing to change or fix anything. This is a meditation practice where there is nothing to do but to ‘notice’. This contemporary practice is based on ancient yogic wisdom and meditation to make a powerful tool for modern day life. In the last decade, there has been a lot of scientific research into this practice. Yoga Nidra is being used to treat not only PTSD in military veterans but also a range of other conditions, including anxiety, depression, stress, and substance abuse, grief, and insomnia/sleep disorders. Researchers found that blood pressure, postural

hypotension, sustained hand grip and heart rate variables were significantly improved by 25%.Yoga Nidra may reduce the symptoms of diabetes and help control blood glucose levels. Although I manage it well and don’t show it, it is rare that I don’t feel some anxiety nibbling at my edges. Once home, I realized that I hadn’t felt that since midway through the workshop. I suspended belief. A few days later I had to face it: I was anxiety free. No matter what I faced (I am a studio manager/owner and teach eight times a week)… I had felt calm and equanimity. Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® is no panacea and I do not believe it ‘cures’ but it may help to relieve some of the symptoms of modern day life. Julie offers Yoga Nidra classes Tuesday evenings at 6:30-7:30 PM. Also a shorter Yoga Nidra session at the end of her Saturday evening 5:00-6:30 PM class. At Yoga on the Park Studio, 5582 Sherbrooke Street West (corner Marcil). For information: telephone 514-712-9642, email: info@yogaonthepark.ca , or browse to: www.yogaonthepark.ca .

Montreal Times Pet of the Week

'Meet Gracie the Quasi-Hunter Cat'

racie was born about 8 or 9 years ago and now lives with Susie near Hudson and is quite content with her set up. Her mother was a Calico cat and her father, who broke into a house through a window screen, succumbing to his questionable desire and waking everyone up in the house with his loud caterwauling, was a Siamese so she's the mixed result of this 'adventure'. She was a very introverted cat, but with good loving from Susie she came out of her shell. "Gracie used to be unapproachable by anyone but me. Over the years she has mellowed and now even greets guests when they arrive - although with some shyness and hesitation," said Susie. "She loves spending her day by the window watching birds and chipmunks

16

who come to eat by the bird feeders and seeds on the porch below." She is also very expressive when quasi-hunting from her lookout.

"She does her famous hunting chatter for the chipmunks, but they pay no attention to her as the barrier of the window helps them feel bold… Gracie does not seem to

say much when the occasional wild turkey goes by, but they do catch her attention!" During her hunting 'offhours' she loves to play. Her favorite toys are anything from cat toys to feathers, but her favorite thing to stalk and toss around indoors are valerian tea bags. Unusual to say the least. When not busy with her virtual feline adventures, she is a very loving cat. "Gracie is on my back each morning when I awake… as soon as I am becoming conscious, she gets up and walks across my back waiting to greet me - and to receive her morning love and praise." Gracie is a master at indoor fun… and at being loved and loving. To submit your pet for 'Pet of the Week', email Bonnie at: bonnierwords@gmail.com or info@mtltimes.ca

Lemon chicken fingers

I

By Chef Peter Webster of Bouquet Garni Catering

am a big fan of Asian inspired cuisine. If I go out to dinner, I usually end up in one of my favourite haunts to try the dumplings in peanut sauce. If they do the dumplings well, then most of the rest of the menu is usually very good. One of the most popular dishes is the Lemon Chicken. The sauce is light and tangy and the combination with the chicken is very tasty. The breading on the chicken is done with cornstarch instead of flour and gives a very crispy texture to the coating of the chicken. For this recipe, two chicken breasts are cut into 10 strips, marinated, coated and quick fried and then served with the lemon sauce. There is a certain amount of work but the results are worth the effort. Serves 2-4 people.

INGREDIENTS: • 2 chicken breasts, cut into 10 strips MARINADE: • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar • Pinch of salt and pepper • 4 green onions, smashed with the side of the knife and finely chopped • 3 slices of fresh gingerroot, smashed with the side of the knife and finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled, smashed and finely chopped COATING: • 2 eggs • 1 cup of corn starch LEMON SAUCE • 1/2 cup chicken stock • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp sugar • 2 tsp corn starch Mix all the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl. Add in the chicken strips and toss to coat.

Refrigerate until ready to cook. Break the eggs into a bowl and whisk. In another bowl, add the cornstarch. Heat 2 cups of canola oil in a wok or frying pan. Dip the chicken strips into the egg and then coat with the cornstarch, pressing the cornstarch into the chicken strip. Place the coated strips on a cookie sheet until all are coated. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and cook for about two minutes per side until lightly browned. Remove from the oil and place on a clean cookie sheet. When all strips are browned, place the chicken in a preheated oven (325º) and continue cooking for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, place all the sauce ingredients in a pot and stir to remove any lumps from the cornstarch. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until thickened. Serve with the cooked chicken strips. Five warning signs that your loved one should be considering a move to a retirement home / senior community Sponsored

I

By Matt DelVecchio Montreal Times

t’s not easy to admit that one is getting older, especially when your body and your mind are not what they used to be. Moving a family member into a senior care residence is never a simple decision. It may not be easy to broach the subject with your loved ones. In fact, they may be resistant to moving and they may fear losing their independence. However, here are 5 warning signs that your loved one

should be considering a move to a retirement / senior residence: 1. Physical When there are physical and anatomical signs of deterioration that will affect their well-being and their safety. A person who is having trouble getting out to shop or remembering how to cook or when to eat can result in significant nutritional issues. This could range from unhealthy weight loss or conversely, excessive weight gain. Check the fridge and watch meal-prep skills. Other examples include loss of sight or hearing, loss of

balance, stroke, disease. or physical conditions, such as arthritis and osteoporosis. 2. Mental Behaviour – Cognitive, Language, and Decision Making Cognitive decline can have serious ramifications, especially if your loved one can't take medications correctly, is not able to fix a meal or doesn't remember to eat. If a loved one exhibits confusion, poor judgment, or other signs of cognitive impairment, assisted living is often a good next step. 3. Caregiver Stress There are the psychological costs of caregiving and of

making difficult care decisions, which can be compared to the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Caregivers may experience symptoms like disabling anxiety, hyper-vigilance and more. The emotional, mental and physical toll of caregiving can be particularly pronounced for adult children or spouses of those who need care. In cases like this, when the demands of care become too great, it might be clear immediately. In other cases, it might not be so obvious. 4. Safety and Security This is a common reason

why families consider a move. They noticed that their loved ones are not as sure on their feet as they used to be or their eyesight is less clear, causing them to be a fall risk. According to the Canadian Public Health Agency, falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among Canadian seniors. 5. Loneliness It’s normal for activity to decrease with age. But if your loved one once enjoyed spending time in the yard gardening, or simply being with friends, and then chooses to no longer engage

in these activities, or rarely leaves the house, it may be time to consider a senior living residence. This is a sign that behavioral changes are underway. Helping your loved ones to recognize the signs of when it is time to move, having an open dialogue with the family members involved and taking the time to discuss the options will go a long way in making the transition to senior care residence more agreeable for everyone. Benefits of owning a network CONNECTING SENIORS WITH COMPUTERS Lessons in marketing business your home!

I

had never thought about it until 2002 and at that point, it becomes almost an obsession in looking for a career change. But what I am going to do? It was the question! Specifically, when you have been a nurse for 25 years you don't think that you can do something different. One day, I decided to consult with somebody who will help me to see more clearly on what I would do in the future. I had no clue, but one morning while doing my yoga practice in my living room I got an inspiration, this is it, I will be learning massage therapy and do my own work and not being pushed to do your work. I felt happy and excited about this new adventure and I will go on helping people with their health. Finally, I took a class while I was still practising nursing which was good for me then I left nursing in 2008. However, I have always been interested in natural products and wanted to use them in my practice. So I decided to find a company I could rely upon

to supply my massage practice. In December 2011, I looked in the classified ads of a local newspaper, which is something I rarely do, and found that little ad called; " Home Based Business " It captivated my attention right away, oh! This is what I am looking for and I love that Network Marketing company because it had made a huge difference in my life and met new wonderful friends. Here are the Benefits Of Owning a Network Marketing Business! 1 - You work wherever you want! This is what I like about this business, I can work in my house, at the local cafe, and go on a vacation and do some work from there, be at the beach with my laptop If I wanted to do so. It is a wonderful benefit that allows you to avoid the traffic and stay home with your children If it is your decision. 2 - You work whenever you want! You make your own schedule in accordance with your business and other work that you may be doing at the same time.

Things to do

10:15 am.

This is what I call freedom! 3 - Be your own Boss! I think that is something that I always unconsciously desired but I did not know at the time, today I am aware.Working for yourself and be your own boss is the dream of many of you including myself. This business allows me to do just that and I love it. Also, I can decide who I want in my business, the money I want to make, and the freedom to make choices, no firing, no hiring people. The most important in that business is to keep focusing on what are your goals and how you want to accomplish them and It is not always easy but rewarding because you have to go on helping other people to improve their health and their financial freedom that is why I love that business so much.
