Legalized marijuana is coming, and so is business opportunity

ne of the Liberal promises during the last campaign seems on the way to becoming a reality, although not before next year. Legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes should have been tabled this week in the House of Commons. And if everything goes as planned, before July 1, 2018, anxious cannabis fans after years of doing it outside the law, would finally be able to consume this drug with no more restrictions than what you currently have to drink beer or smoke a regular cigarette. Legalizing marijuana would have a substantial economic effect, both for the government which would be able to get taxes from what would become a regular product subjected to sales tax and

presence in Quebec, and therefore like many other large and small pot entrepreneurs, the next big question would be how the Quebec government will regulate the marketing of the product. A report requested by the provincial government some time ago mentioned two possibilities: government owned stores—in the same style of the current liquor stores, but they would be a separate set of establishments exclusively devoted to cannabis—and allowing private retailers to be in charge, although with

Other businesses already involved somehow in the pot trade, however, are taking a more strategic approach, just waiting until the legislation is put in place. According to a report from the Financial Post section of The Gazette this week, “Shares of marijuana companies like Canopy Growth Corp. have surged more than fourfold over the past 12 months amid investor optimism over recreational sales, which Canaccord Genuity Group Inc. said in November could reach $6 billion annually by 2021.” Canopy, one of the largest companies in the pot business already has a

strict regulations. The Quebec government hasn’t made its mind yet on this issue and very likely; it would wait until the legislative process is more advanced in Ottawa. It may also consult and see what the other provinces may be planning to do. The experience of other jurisdictions could also be used. Some states in the USA have legalized marijuana, but not the federal government there. Uruguay was the first country in the world to

Francofolies, l'amour for the French song The "family photo" with the artists present at the press conference

here are two fun ways of learning French, yeah, we know, find a Québécoise lover, many people would immediately say. But then there is the second way: listening to French songs. And if you want something more than that, a sort of immersion into a French environment, well, in that case, the best advice would be to attend some of the concerts being held during the eleven days of the Francofolies de Montréal, from June 8 to 18, this coming summer. The lineup for the indoor shows was unveiled this past Tuesday at a press conference. As in previous editions of this French song festival, a diversity of styles and genres is its main characteristic. Let's see what some of the shows will present: Pierre Lapointe's "Amours, délices et orgues" is described as "An extraordinary project somewhere between song, design, dance, and monologue" (Maison symphonique, June 14 to 17, 8 p.m.). For his part, Claude

Dubois, another big name in the Quebec music scene, will present a show called "Dubois en liberté." The show is described as "An unforgettable evening with a true giant of Québécois song, blessed with one of the most remarkable voices, and a ton of immortal classics" (Theatre Maisonneuve, June 16, 8 p.m.). For something different, what about some Quebec hiphop? Rymz (opening act Souldia) will be at Metropolis on June 9, at 9 p.m. And MHD described as the "New phenomenon of French rap" (opening act Misa) will be at Metropolis, June 15 and 16, at 9 p.m. Young singer Émile Bilodeau (opening act Jerome St-Kant) will be at L'Astral, on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. And of course there will the presence of some well-known stars such as Catherine Major with her show "La maison du monde" (opening act Sarah Toussaint-Léveillé) presented as "An artist in eternal evolution" she will be at the Cinquième Salle on June 14 at 8:30 p.m.

Also in this category, we find Richard Séguin, described as "an ageless artist… (who) presents his most recent album in a show featuring unique staging" (Cinquième Salle, June 16, 8:30 p.m.). The musical theatre will also be part of the program this time: "Demain matin, Montréal m'attend" described as "The legendary musical comedy by Michel Tremblay and François Dompierre… reborn on the stage of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde" (June 13-16, and June 22, 8 p.m.; June 17 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and June 25, 3 p.m.) The Francofolies also features a series of outdoor free concerts whose lineup will be announced in a few weeks. racie was born about 8 or 9 years ago and now lives with Susie near Hudson and is quite content with her set up. Her mother was a Calico cat and her father, who broke into a house through a window screen, succumbing to his questionable desire and waking everyone up in the house with his loud caterwauling, was a Siamese so she's the mixed result of this 'adventure'. She was a very introverted cat, but with good loving from Susie she came out of her shell. "Gracie used to be unapproachable by anyone but me. Over the years she has mellowed and now even greets guests when they arrive - although with some shyness and hesitation," said Susie. "She loves spending her day by the window watching birds and chipmunks

who come to eat by the bird feeders and seeds on the porch below." She is also very expressive when quasi-hunting from her lookout.

"She does her famous hunting chatter for the chipmunks, but they pay no attention to her as the barrier of the window helps them feel bold… Gracie does not seem to

say much when the occasional wild turkey goes by, but they do catch her attention!" During her hunting 'offhours' she loves to play. Her favorite toys are anything from cat toys to feathers, but her favorite thing to stalk and toss around indoors are valerian tea bags. Unusual to say the least. When not busy with her virtual feline adventures, she is a very loving cat. "Gracie is on my back each morning when I awake… as soon as I am becoming conscious, she gets up and walks across my back waiting to greet me - and to receive her morning love and praise." Lemon chicken fingers

am a big fan of Asian inspired cuisine. If I go out to dinner, I usually end up in one of my favourite haunts to try the dumplings in peanut sauce. If they do the dumplings well, then most of the rest of the menu is usually very good. One of the most popular dishes is the Lemon Chicken. The sauce is light and tangy and the combination with the chicken is very tasty. The breading on the chicken is done with cornstarch instead of flour and gives a very crispy texture to the coating of the chicken. For this recipe, two chicken breasts are cut into 10 strips, marinated, coated and quick fried and then served with the lemon sauce. There is a certain amount of work but the results are worth the effort. Serves 2-4 people.

INGREDIENTS: • 2 chicken breasts, cut into 10 strips MARINADE: • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar • Pinch of salt and pepper • 4 green onions, smashed with the side of the knife and finely chopped • 3 slices of fresh gingerroot, smashed with the side of the knife and finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled, smashed and finely chopped COATING: • 2 eggs • 1 cup of corn starch LEMON SAUCE • 1/2 cup chicken stock • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp sugar • 2 tsp corn starch Mix all the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl. Add in the chicken strips and toss to coat.

Refrigerate until ready to cook. Break the eggs into a bowl and whisk. In another bowl, add the cornstarch. Heat 2 cups of canola oil in a wok or frying pan. Dip the chicken strips into the egg and then coat with the cornstarch, pressing the cornstarch into the chicken strip. Place the coated strips on a cookie sheet until all are coated. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and cook for about two minutes per side until lightly browned. Remove from the oil and place on a clean cookie sheet. When all strips are browned, place the chicken in a preheated oven (325º) and continue cooking for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, place all the sauce ingredients in a pot and stir to remove any lumps from the cornstarch. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until thickened. Serve with the cooked chicken strips. should be considering a move to a retirement / senior residence: 1. Physical When there are physical and anatomical signs of deterioration that will affect their well-being and their safety. A person who is having trouble getting out to shop or remembering how to cook or when to eat can result in significant nutritional issues. This could range from unhealthy weight loss or conversely, excessive weight gain. Check the fridge and watch meal-prep skills. Other examples include loss of sight or hearing, loss of

balance, stroke, disease. or physical conditions, such as arthritis and osteoporosis. 2. Mental Behaviour – Cognitive, Language, and Decision Making Cognitive decline can have serious ramifications, especially if your loved one can't take medications correctly, is not able to fix a meal or doesn't remember to eat. If a loved one exhibits confusion, poor judgment, or other signs of cognitive impairment, assisted living is often a good next step. 3. Caregiver Stress There are the psychological costs of caregiving and of

making difficult care decisions, which can be compared to the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Caregivers may experience symptoms like disabling anxiety, hyper-vigilance and more.The emotional, mental and physical toll of caregiving can be particularly pronounced for adult children or spouses of those who need care. In cases like this, when the demands of care become too great, it might be clear immediately. In other cases, it might not be so obvious. 4. Safety and Security This is a common reason

why families consider a move. They noticed that their loved ones are not as sure on their feet as they used to be or their eyesight is less clear, causing them to be a fall risk. According to the Canadian Public Health Agency, falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among Canadian seniors. 5. Loneliness It’s normal for activity to decrease with age. But if your loved one once enjoyed spending time in the yard gardening, or simply being with friends, and then chooses to no longer engage

in these activities, or rarely leaves the house, it may be time to consider a senior living residence. This is a sign that behavioral changes are underway. Helping your loved ones to recognize the signs of when it is time to move, having an open dialogue with the family members involved and taking the time to discuss the options will go a long way in making the transition to senior care residence more agreeable for everyone.
