ummer is over - fall has arrived and with it the sounds, visions and tastes of that time of year that brings us Lobo apples, pumpkin pie, along with crisp air and colourful leaves. It also brings us ARTS Alive! Quebec. Throughout the summer, Festivals have been popping up across the Quebec landscape celebrating the diverse talents of communities. What better way to get to know your neighbours, discover new friends and…recognize the talents within each and every one of us! Arts Alive! Québec, is an initiative of ELAN (English-Language Arts Network) that guides communities in developing their mini arts festivals. Knowlton recently enjoyed a very successful Festival, showcasing all the local talents, from food and crafts to theatre and music. Author, Louise Penny was there to promote her much anticipated newest in the Gamache series of detective stories. Needless to say the event was highly attended! ELAN is not-for-profit organization that connects, supports, and promotes Quebec’s English-speaking artists and arts communities. And how well we need that support! 9

You don’t want to miss that. “Programming reflects local tastes, arts and cultures. Profit from the last great days of summer and early fall with indoor and outdoor shows and events, including hands-on creative activities led by artists and artisan.” Over the summer, Guy Rodgers, ELAN

Executive Director, has travelled to the different areas in Quebec overseeing the special touches that each of the communities infused into their Festivals. Each injecting their own diversity into the events. Now it is the turn of the West Island and the final “Arts Alive! Québec! The Pointe-Claire event, like all the others, will be geared to families involving themselves in all things arts and culture. There will be theatre, music and workshops during the day, culminating in an the evening concert starring local bands Vintage Wine, Greg Halpin and his recently launched Notes from a Bedroom, and the highly popular Happenstance. How to sell a house that didn't sell WEDNESDAY

September 21, 2016

MONTREAL - If your home has just come off the market and hasn't sold, don't be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn't Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period.

Don't risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Before you hire a realtor, know the right questions to ask to save you time and money. Industry experts have prepared a free special report called "How to Sell a House that Didn't Sell" which educates you on the issues involved. In the #3 position was Kim DeschĂŞnes with 33 points and then Caroline Ouellette (Captain of Team Canada Sochi Olympics Gold Medalists) with 32 points. Parkinson Canada walk on Montreal Island a success

S

ome 65 participants took part in the first annual Parkinson Canada SuperWalk held in the Montreal area on September 11. This group was joined by about 20 volunteers and a few Parkinson staff members for walks around the campuses of John Abbott College and Macdonald College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue.

The event was designed to raise awareness of and funds for dealing with Parkinson's disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that can respond well to medication and therapy. An estimated 25,000 Quebecers are living with Parkinson's disease; one in five of them is younger than 50 years old. "A quick count suggests we raised about $6,200 in pledges and donations," Parkinson SuperWalk coordinator Lisa Mintz said. Sainte Anne Mayor, Paola Hawa spoke to the crowd just before the walk began, noting that people in her entourage are fighting Parkinson's. Hawa joined the group walking 3km around the two campuses. Neuroscience researcher Dr. Daniel Lévesque from l'Université de Montréal was also among the participants. "This is great," one enthusiastic participant, Tim Landry who walked 3km, told us. "These kinds of events will help remove the stigma associated with Parkinson's." Like many other participants, Landry has friends who are fighting Parkinson's. Music for the event was provided at different locations by CHOM FM and by local guitarist Josh Adams. Local businesses such as Tim Horton's and Provigo chipped in to provide refreshments for participants. "Really big 'thank you's to all the people who supported this walk," continued Mintz. "But a special thank you goes out to both John Abbott College and the Macdonald College campus of McGill University for such a beautiful venue and for logistical support. The police technology program at John Abbott was terrific and gave us most of our volunteers." Across Canada, some $2.7 million was raised from SuperWalks in 2015. These monies were used for research, advocacy, education and for support services. "Not only will we be back in 2017, but we will be raising more money and be bigger and better!" said Mintz. Parkinson Canada Support groups are also a big part of our services. They are located in Cote des Neiges and Dollard des Ormeaux (West Island) with new groups just created in Laval and St. Leonard. For more information about the next Parkinson SuperWalk, or about the Montreal area support groups, visit: www.parkinson.ca or email: Lisa.mintz@parkinson.ca

Centennial Academy hires an Assistant Head to lead its new French sector

entennial Academy is pleased to announce that it has recruited Cathy Brazeau to its ranks, in the newly-created role of Assistant Head of School, Teaching and Learning. Ms. Brazeau will play a critical role in the development and oversight of Centennial’s curriculum and will be responsible for developing, integrating and implementing the new French sector at Centennial, which will open in August 2017. “Our vision is to offer both anglophone and francophone students the opportunity to master their learning challenges and graduate on time,” says Angela Burgos, Centennial’s Head of School. “With Cathy on board, we now have the capacity to move full steam ahead with this exciting and transformative project.” Centennial Academy is an independent secondary school whose mission is to empower students with learning challenges to become autonomous, resilient, life-long learners. Impressively, although 90% of their students are diagnosed with challenges (e.g., ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and autism spectrum disorders), more than 90% of them graduate in five years and go one to college and university. “But, until now, we only operated in English. There was simply no equivalent to Centennial among French-language schools in Montreal,” adds Ms. Burgos. “With the addition of our French sector, we will now be able to reach a segment of the population that is underserved.” www.mtltimes.ca

The project has the support of several leading specialists, including Dr. Gilles Julien, C.M., O.Q., whose foundation helps send several students in a vulnerable situation to Centennial every year. Cathy Brazeau brings nearly 30 years of experience in teaching and administration to Centennial Academy, including five years as Director of Educational Services at Collège Brébeuf, where she was deeply involved in curriculum, teacher training and development, as well as parent liaison. “I am delighted to be part of the Centennial team,” says Ms. Brazeau. “I am truly impressed by what Centennial achieves and by the commitment and dedication of its teachers and staff members.” “Already, I have heard so many parents tell me how Centennial has changed their lives. I am truly happy to help make such a difference in the lives of our families,” she adds. Five francophone students are already enrolled in Secondary 1 at Centennial as part of a French sector pilot project. In addition to overseeing this programme, developing the new French curriculum and recruiting francophone teachers, Ms. Brazeau is also heading-up the re-branding of the school, which now boasts a bilingual logo and new signage. “Our goal is for Centennial to be fully bilingual and to welcome Secondary 1 and 2 students to a fullfledged French sector next August,” says Ms. Burgos. “We will then add another grade in each of the next three school years. There’s a lot of work to be done, but we’ll make it happen.”
