ntario street might not be the first place you would think of when wanting to explore a part of Montreal, but my goal is to show you that my neighbourhood shopping street has quite a lot to offer. This neighbourhood is a true mix of the old and the new. Hochelaga was once a separate city known as Côte Saint-Martin, and it was meant to be designed according to the criteria of the City Beautiful movement. There are many squares and parks, some truly stunning industrial buildings, as well as perfect examples of how public buildings were at one time designed along grandiose architectural lines. Elena my daughter, and my faithful photographer/walking companion and I began at the Marché Maisonneuve building. During the summer you can catch huge line dancing parties here, and although I can never keep up with the moves, it is joyful to watch the neighborhood having fun together. Just across from the noteworthy fountain called La Fermière, you will notice the eye-catching Bain Morgan, which was simply a public bath back in the day when not every household had a bathroom. As you start walking west, you will begin to see how developers have remodeled manufacturing spaces into either businesses, public buildings or living spaces. WEDNESDAY

Biérerologue

Our first stop was Biérerologue (4301), owned by the very friendly David Deschênes. His business has been open for almost five years, and is successful thanks to their business formula. On top of offering over 200 local products which range from beers and wines, to jams, cold cuts and sweets, they also follow the seasons, and offer a range of products to reflect the time of year. Coming up: rhubarb juice from the Trappist Brothers and chocolatecovered blueberries.

Hochecafé (4299)

We crossed the street over to Hochecafé (4299), a popular breakfast and lunch spot. The ambiance is relaxed and the food is tasty and filling. Owner Dominic Roy Blanchette opened in 2011 and has many regulars, including me. Elena and I shared a grilled cheese with caramelized onions and sliced apples, served with a bowl of soup ($8.50). They also have fresh fruit juices, baked goods and most importantly, and the reason why I return, a welcoming and efficient staff.

bles look inviting and the menu seems promising: BYOW, $1 oysters and $30 meals which included an entrée, a main dish and dessert. I look forward to giving it a try.

As we continued our walk, Elena stopped me a couple time to exclaim at a sign, and say “Mom, look at the aesthetic!”, and this is what is pleasing about this neighbourhood, there are still many traces of older businesses mixed in with the modern ones. We then came up to the Maisonneuve Library, which was once the A little further west we came upon a new city hall for Montreal, and is a very photogenic restaurant called La Tannerie (4255). Just across the street is the restaurant with the best and biggest portion of fish and chips and the most enigmatic sign on Ontario street: La Cervoise (3976). New to the neighborhood is the Irish Pub Le Trèfle (3889). Thanks to its expansive collection of whiskies, and its summer-friendly huge open windows in the summer, it has made a place for itself in the neighborhood.

We walked for a while more, and stopped at Burrito Revolucion (3905). We shared a couple of soft tacos ($8.75) with a side of guacamole ($1.10), and agreed that they were worth writing about. This restaurant has a terrasse in the summer, and good music playing, as well a selection of beers to choose from. We had to stop at Biscuiterie Oscar (3755), which has been open since 1955, and which has a very satisfying candy assortment, both in bulk and imported packaged items. They sell cookies, of course, which you can order online as well. They also have a varied collection of Easter chocolates. I bought an Easter chocolate soccer ball and a chocolate cow here a while back.

We crossed the street again to go to Ahroma Boulangerie, a bakery-café situated at 15 Place Simon-Valois, a little square with lots of seating on Ontario street. It is hard to resist walking away from this place without having purchased at least some cheese and bread, or perhaps a croissant and café au lait. The neighboring store is William J. Walter, Saucisser. Elena was happy to see that they had some cheddar and bacon sausages, her favourite when we shop here, although, there are at least twenty other varieties to choose from, making it a great place to stop if you plan to host a BBQ. After you have made a selection from the sausages and beers, you can walk to the other end of the store for an icecream dessert.

Our last stop is a café Elena and I both adore, Atomic Café. Owner Gilles Boudreault once ran a marvelous dvd club at the back with an extensive collection categorized by film director. Sadly it closed, but this has opened up a space at the back of the café for music events and film screenings. This place is just so cute and funky and has the nicest staff. We had an allongé and a lemon-ginger tea, enjoyed the alternative music playing and called it a day.

Ontario street has too much to offer in terms of architecture and unique businesses to not come visit at least once this summer. We hope to see you there!

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale WEDNESDAY

April 26, 2017

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Graceland - Home of the king Graceland - The home of the “King” Elvis Presley

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE – “I’m going to Graceland, Graceland … Memphis, Tennessee … I’m going to Graceland.” That verse from the chorus of Paul Simon’s 1986 hit song kept playing in my head as my plane landed at Memphis International Airport to start a recent five-day press tour of the home of the Delta Blues, as well as parts of West Tennessee. But the main highlight for me during these five days was to visit the former home of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll located on the boulevard that bears his name. If you’re a fan of rock music, visiting Graceland (www.Graceland.com) is like doing a rock music pilgrimage to a sacred sight, and ranks right up there with the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and Abbey Road in London. And after paying a visit to Graceland, the palatial home of Elvis Presley from 1957 until his death 20 years later, you get the feeling that you have truly set foot into a rock music shrine. In fact, Graceland is so much more than just the mansion; when you set foot inside the facility, it’s more like Elvis World. But first and foremost, you must start your visit with the mansion. This is where Elvis and his family made their home, and with every www.mtltimes.ca

room that you visit, you feel a step closer to the personal life of the King. In fact, it’s almost like you stepped back in time a good 40-50 years, when the mansion was a thriving part of Elvis’ private world.

And the recently introduced interactive iPad tour that’s given to each visitor gives you a chance to learn more about life at Graceland. Narrated by actor John Stamos (“Full House”), the iPad tour gives you plenty of fascinating insight to the way of life Elvis and his family had behind the mansion walls, as told by Presley himself from old interviews, as well as comments by Lisa Marie Presley that were made specifically for the iPad tour, in which she shares her personal memories of life in Graceland. And with each room that you visit, the iPad gives you plenty of extra features, such as photos and film footage that were taken of Elvis in the rooms in question, plus interesting bits of trivia (for example, when you reach Elvis’ TV room, you find out what were his favorite TV shows and movies that he liked to watch regularly, such as “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”, “Monty Python”, “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”). Graceland mansion – which was built in 1939 – has its rooms preserved the way they looked when Elvis and his family lived there 40 years ago. It’s almost like it’s a living time capsule to Presley’s opulent way of life that his fame as a pioneering rock music star brought him (however, visitors are not allowed to the upstairs part of the house, which includes Elvis’ bedroom that has remained untouched since his death on August 16, 1977; only the curator and Priscilla Presley are allowed access there). The auxiliary buildings on the grounds of Graceland are converted to mini museums to Elvis’ life and career. There is the office where Vernon Presley (Elvis’ dad) conducted the dayto-day business of his son’s enterprise; the trophy room (and Hall of Gold) is an artefact-laden tribute to Elvis’ career as a singer, movie star and humanitarian (look out for the famed black leather suit he wore during his 1968 comeback TV special); and the converted racquetball court contains even more concert costumes and gold and platinum records, including one of the most poignant items in the Graceland collection … the piano where Elvis sat down and played some tunes just hours before his death. Visitors to Graceland have the option to choose five different types of tours that will give them the chance to have their own customized Elvis experience (all of them include the new interactive iPad tour guide). 16

Another popular spot in Memphis where you can find endless Elvis fans making a regular pilgrimage to is 706 Union Avenue, the location of the legendary Sun Records Studio (www.sunstudio.com), where Elvis made his first recordings between 1953 and 1955. Located 15 minutes from Graceland, the Sun Studios is the recording studio founded by Sam Phillips in 1950 as the Memphis Recording Service. Its raison d’etre was to give Beale Street blues musicians that rare chance to record their songs in an atmosphere of creative freedom and innovative recording techniques such as echoes and sound distortions. However, the Sun Studios claim to fame was as the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, where aspiring up and coming young singers from the area like Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis were able to pony up the $4 studio fee and express their musical talents on vinyl. Sun Studios offer regularly scheduled guided tours of the facility between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. I highly recommend taking the tour to find out the complete story of the role Sun Records and Sam Phillips played in the development of rock music. The guides are very knowledgeable, and offer a very informative and entertaining tour complete with anecdotes and clips from some of Sun’s best known recordings (including Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88” that Phillips recorded for Chess Records in 1951, and is widely regarded as the first rock music record). The tour is conducted in two parts: it begins on the upper level of the building, which is a museum that contains a wide collection of artefacts and memorabilia from the Sun archives, including Sam Phillips’ recording machines and the leather guitar that Elvis used on his nationwide TV debut in 1956. However, the crown jewel of this part of the tour is the actual WHBQ radio studio where legendary Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips made his home throughout the 50s, and is preserved to look like the way it did back in 1954, when Phillips played Elvis’ first official record for Sun – “That’s All Right” – on his highly popular radio show “Red, Hot and Blue”. In fact, the guide admitted that several members of Sun Studios’ current staff moved the studio piece-by-piece from its original location, the closed down Hotel Chisca, in a rather unusual midnight move. The second part of the tour takes place in the lower level of the building, which houses the 20

actual Sun Records studios. The moment you step inside the studio, you feel that you automatically go back in time to 1954-55, as Sun is about to make its mark in the nascent world of rock music. And as the guide plays clips from the first recordings of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and the famed “Million Dollar Quartet” jam session of December 1956, you feel that the ghosts of these rock legends have made their way back to 706 Union Street to demonstrate how Sun Records made their respective careers. And as a masterful finishing touch to the tour, the guide unveiled – to the visitors’ awed amazement -- the actual microphone that Elvis used to make his very first recording at the exact spot where he sang it (and visitors are allowed to pose for pictures with this very famous piece of recording equipment). Graceland and Sun Studios … two places in Memphis where the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was crowned and where he created his kingdom. *** For more information about these venues, and other places to visit and discover in Memphis, contact the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development at 1-800-GO2-TENN or go to www.tnvacation.com .

WINE

Barolo vs. Barbaresco: Wine Royalty

Although both are born from the rustic, yet sophisticated Piedmont region and are produced from the same grape, there are subtle differences between these two powerhouse wines. Both are commanders of Piedmont’s most well known wines. (In fact, Barolo has been referred to as the ‘king of wine’). In general, Barolo is the more structured, powerful, complex and masculine of the two. Wine critics describe Barolo “stern and imposing,” but that is open to interpretation. Generally, it has more weight and acts like a French Bordeaux than its counterpart. Barolos are more expensive but age longer. Barolo and Barbaresco are natural partners with meat based risottos

Both Barolo and Barbaresco pair well with foods that offer bold flavors that can assert up to them. Robust meats, wild game, rich pastas and creamy risottos are all worthy partners. Barbera: Piedmont’s traditional everyday wine

Barolo producers keep full cellars of their old vintages

Like Barbaresco, Barolo is not recommended it to drink young because its too fierce. By law, it must age for a minimum of 3 years between barrel and bottle; 5 years for Barolo riserva. Many require significantly longer to reach their prime. Barbaresco, on the other hand, is the more graceful of the two. It is softer, more balanced, feminine and matures earlier. Aging requirements for Barbaresco are 2 years between barrel and bottle and 4 years for Barbaresco riserva. Non-riserva wines require only one year of oak aging, giving a smoother, softer, and more feminine finish. www.mtltimes.ca

Remember, Barbera is the name of both the grape and the wine. Historically, both have been treated more like ‘commoners’ when compared to their more royal Piedmont counterparts. Unlike the delicate Nebbiolo grape, Barbera is so adaptable it can pops just about anywhere. In fact, it can now be found in wine growing regions all around the world. It’s not hard to see why Barbera has long been referred to as the ‘paesano wine.’ The adaptability and high yield of this grape made it easy to cultivate for people of different social and economic . It has earned its reputation as a common wine, suitable for every table. Not surprisingly, Barbera is a wine that has graced the tables of hard working Italian families for generations. Barbera is no delicate flower either, however. With its acidic, full body and deep rich color, it is a good match for the hearty flavors you’ll find on the classic Italian family table. However, thanks to its laid back character – and the fact it can be enjoyed young – Barbera has gained more widespread appeal. It can now be found in the finest restaurants, as well as in the average family home.

Produttori del Barbaresco, one of the best coops in Italy

Aldo Vacca, director of Produttori del Barbaresco

Produttori del Barbaresco is a 52 member cooperative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation with an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have mastered over generations. The Produttori uses traditional Piedmontese methods: an 18 to 21-day primary fermentation with aging for up to three years in botti (Large barrels). Such techniques allow them to make transparent wines, and let the terroir shines in their wines. The Produttori’s nine crus or vineyards lie on steep slopes composed of the firm clay and limestone marl of the Langhe. Those from the northern hills—Ovello, Montefico and Montestefano–have a higher clay content and are known for their rich earthy, meaty flavors, full body and firm structure. Cantina Fratelli Alessandria, traditional Barolos in the making for 5 generations

Sitting on the the small hilltop village of Verduno, Cantina Fratelli Alessandria produces exceptional wine from 14 hectares that includes the crus of Monvigliero in Verduno and Gramolere in Monforte d’Alba. Their Barolo wines were a favorite in the court of King Carlo Alberto in 1843. Gramolere , situated in the prestigious Monforte d’Alba subregion, is a high elevation site ( 425 meters above sea level) a total 20, and it enjoys a particularly warm microclimate created by its location. The terroir at Gramolere is constituted by steep sandy clay soils. From 40-year-old vines, the Barolo is broad with a dense mouth and fine tannins. However, No matter what you’re serving for dinner tonight, when it comes to choosing a bottle of wine to grace your table on a sunday dinner, look no further than the wines of the Piedmont region of Italy.
