o question that the single mention of ‘residential schools' brings pain to Canada's aboriginal people, it also

brings shame to a country that at one point in its history took such wrong approach to its relationship with the first inhabitants of the land. Time has passed: reparations have been made, reconciliation is now on the agenda, now it is also a moment for the arts to contribute to the healing process. And that is what the unveiling of the Residential School Totem Pole just in front of the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts represents. The spectacular structure, 21.45 metres high, was the work

of the Kwakiutl Nation artist Charles Joseph and it will be part of La Balade pour la Paix (The Walk for Peace) – An Open Air Museum, a joint initiative by the MMFA and McGill University to mark the 375th anniversary of Montreal. continued on Page 6

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

n July 17, 2013, Nalie Agustin was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 24 at the time.

By Jillian Clark mtltimes.ca

Most of us can’t begin imagine what that might have felt like. Over the years, though, Nalie has learned that no matter the story, someone can relate. Instead of letting this life changing diagnosis overcome her, Nalie uses her story, her skills, and the connections she has made along the way to inspire others to never give up. Four years later, Nalie’s blog and YouTube series “The Nalie Show” have created a community and a space for survivors and “thrivers” like Nalie to connect. Nalie’s natural reaction to share was instant. She filmed her first video moments after her diagnosis. “It started off as therapy for me. I would just

The Nalie Show began as scheduled afterwards. Those who tune into The Nalie Show every Monday now catch a glimpse of Nalie’s strength as a “Breast Cancer Thriver” the second time around. “I’m going to fight this,” Nalie said. “I’m going to practice what I’ve been preaching for four years now about never giving up.” A day-by-day attitude helps her through the daily struggles associated with cancer treatment. Despite chemotherapy pains and exhaustion, and reliving the physical and mental changes she remembers from her first diagnosis, Nalie still finds success in every day in the response she receives. sculptor wanted to dedicate this piece to "the First Nations children, of whom the artist Charles Joseph was one, who were taken away from

their families and sent to the residential schools of religious communities." Those who have the occasion to visit the sculpture on Sherbrooke

Street West will see that the totem pole has eight levels of representations, with distinct images. From the bottom one can see the Patron's Family, going through the Cedar Ring that symbolizes safety, then the Wild Woman seen with children who were coming back from the residential schools. She also represents female tradition and culture. Then on the next level comes the Killer Whale representing the different tribes, followed by the Raven who is a "trickster" and represents the nuns, priests, and government workers who then took the children to the residential schools. The Bear which is the next level has many faces representing the children who died while in the care of the residential schools. The final two levels of the totem pole are

the Arctic Fox, representing the observer, the witness to what happened; and Kulus which represents Charles Joseph's chief. The unveiling ceremony was very moving and symbolic as well. There on that corner of the city (originally Mohawk land after all) converged the Mayor Denis Coderre, the Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton (who ironically referred to Montreal as "its most prosperous suburb") and the artist and members of a delegation from the Kwakiutl nation of British Columbia. Mayor Coderre indicated he felt "humbled" by the whole event and its significance. He then remarked that "The City is firmly committed to reconciliation, and our pledge takes on new meaning as we stand before this

totem pole and remember the thousands of aboriginal people who passed through the residential school system." He finally added that "As we celebrate Montreal 375th anniversary, understanding and reconciliation with aboriginal peoples are of vital importance." The symbols from the Aboriginal nations were very present throughout the whole dedication event. From the blessing at the beginning to the ritual dances held at the end of the ceremony, all of that in an atmosphere of recognition through that magnificent piece of art, of the injustices of the past and the need to work harder to build a new relationship between the First Nations and the rest of Canadians. The arts can certainly contribute to that.

Pet of the Week

Meet Cooper and the Late Dinah

bout eight years ago, Kathleen Murphy who lives in T.M.R., took in two kittens from the SPCA as part of their Foster Pet Program. Dinah and her brother Cooper were just 8 weeks old at the time and the plan was to take care of them for a month until they were ready to be adopted. After the first day she couldn't imagine 'not having the pitterpatter of their paws scamper across the hardwood floors' - and so became their 'forever Mom'. Unfortunately Dinah recently died, crossing over the 'Rainbow Bridge' after a very brief illness that necessitated the vet putting her down. Kathleen and Cooper both miss her, but together they have become a loving source of support for each other. "When watching TV or reading," Kathleen explained, "I'd stretch out on the couch and little Dinah would appear and rest her paw on my shoulder and stare at me, her way of giving a hug. Cooper reminds me of Dinah… I'm enjoying getting to spend more time with him, and if his constant paw on my shoulder

is any indication, I believe it's mutual!" Dinah enjoyed playing hide and go seek with Cooper, willing to remain hidden in a box until he could find her. She also liked playing catch and floor hockey, when not lying on top of armoires and laptops - or on the sofa biting Kathleen's hair. "While Cooper is very serious and protective, Dinah was most affectionate and caring… one day I was feeling a bit sad, and Dinah brought her stuffed hedgehog to the foot of my bed as her 'feelbetter-soon gift'. This happened more than once." It was a bittersweet time when Dinah passed over. "I had just 48 hours to get used to the idea that moments later she would be

gone. On that day and for several days after I got emotional, more than I thought possible. There were my frequent yet silent tears, a couple of Facebook posts and thoughtful condolences from friends in response." Their time with Dinah was such a joy and although she is gone, she is far from forgotten. There are the memories, the photos and the company of each other. "She was a delicate beauty, and petite, weighing only 10 pounds… the eternal kitten." And in both Kathleen and Cooper's hearts, she will remain forever. Hamburger Bliss!

I

t’s barbecue season again! One of my favourite meals on the bbq is the hamburger. I normally cook up some bacon until crispy and let it drain. In the drippings, I sauté up some diced onion, garlic and fresh mushrooms. I combine all these ingredients with the lean ground beef, add some Montreal steak spice and a dollop of my homemade barbecue sauce and I make an incredible hamburger patty! Placed inside a hamburger bun with a little texture (no air filled white bread buns for me) and I have a meal worth drooling over. My good friend, Dave Fisher, at CJAD, wanted to know what I would cook up to begin the new barbecue season. What came to mind is an old favourite I discovered during my stay in Calgary. A hamburger emporium offered a wide array of hamburgers including what would become an institution at home. It was mentioned on their menu with a byline that read “don’t laugh until you try it!”. It was called the Peanut Butter Bacon Burger. Now I will say to you, don’t laugh until YOU try it. Afterall, how can you go wrong eating something with peanut but-

ter and bacon – step outside the box, you may just discover a new favourite! Ingredients • 2 lbs lean ground beef • 2 tbsp Montreal steak spice • 1 lb bacon, cut into 2” strips and cooked, drained and kept warm peanut butter • 6 buns, preferable onion buns, Kaiser rolls etc Mix the steak spice into the lean ground beef. Form 6 patties, making sure the patties are flat and tight around the outside. With your fingers, make a depression in the centre of the pattie. This helps to keep the pattie flat during cooking. Grill the patties on the barbecue. After the last turn, divide the bacon and place on the patties. Slice and toast the buns on the upper rack. Slather the peanut butter on both sides of the toasted bun. Insert the patty and be ready for a great taste sensation. Chef ’s Tip: Have a napkin ready.

Doing Yoga on a Chair Sponsored

C

By Trin Veiss Mikkelsen Montreal Times

hair Yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga available. Chair yoga classes are safe, energizing classes suitable for people with joint injury, who are recovering from illness, or who simply want a gentle class. Also, a variation of chair yoga is popular as an exercise practice for office workers. The chair provides support, and the chair yoga class uses this support to offer stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises. Many yoga postures can still be done while in the chair. Depending on the group and the space, a typical chair yoga class might come out of the chair at some point to do standing postures. It may also bring people onto a mat or to a wall for a few minutes. However, there are no complicated movements or complex postures, and the physical exertion is limited. Students can improve their health generally in chair yoga classes, gaining more mobility and circulation, and improving digestion and balance. If they are recovering from injury,

this is a way to maintain activity without stressing the injured part. Many students find that, as in regular yoga classes, they feel energized and more positive in their outlook after a chair yoga class. Chair yoga for seniors. I have had occasion to teach chair yoga classes at

a variety of senior’s residences in Montreal. Generally, seniors who do the classes gain greater flexibility, more mobility, and report improved mood and outlook. They become more autonomous and independent, sleep better and become more social. They find that while aging is inevitable, dis-ease is optional. Chair yoga as therapy. People with a variety of injuries are coming to Yoga on the Park Studio to integrate chair yoga into their injury recovery program. For starters, they recognize the need to

keep doing some form of exercise, and this is one of the most accessible and effective forms of exercise available for this purpose. Chair yoga for office workers. Many organizations are finding chair yoga an ideal form of exercise for their employees. The ergonomics of office work tend to cause people to slump forward, constraining the breath and reducing circulation to vital organs. Clients report that a 45-minute chair yoga class in the afternoon leads to better breathing, better posture, brighter outlooks and higher productivity. I have been doing yoga now for many decades. My practice has continued to evolve: sometimes for the better; other times because my body is no longer able to do the postures in the way I once did. But I am confident that there will always be a yoga practice for me, no matter what; and chair yoga is one of the ways this comes true. Malcolm McLean offers chair yoga classes twice weekly at Yoga on the Park Studio: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 to 12:30. hen my parents started Earth to Body I was a little hesitant to use some of their new creations. I was in my early 20's and I was used to the products I had seen on TV for the last 20 years. I came home from school one day and my dad handed me a sheet of paper. On it was a list of chemicals that he said was in all of my hair and skin products (if they even bothered to list them, which I learned later most didn't). I read 'propylene glycol'. "What is that?" I wondered. "Sodium laurel sulfate? Isn't that in everything? How can that be bad? " Well, let me tell you, not only are they bad for us, they are also destroying the environment. Slowly. I ran to my bathroom and bedroom on a mission to find one item without one of those carcinogens. To my shock and surprise the bottles either had no list (who knows what's in them) or they had a long, sad confusing jumble of ingredients that were all on my dad's list. So I started a Junk Box. A big junk box that cost an arm and a leg in product, but it felt kind of good to begin anew and become a tester for my parent’s

concoctions and recipes. (By law, today all ingredients are supposed to be listed.) Now for the plunge. I descended the stairs and my dad handed me a shampoo bar. "A shampoo bar? Really?" He said, " What do you think they used before Big Pharma and the 'Herbal hair remedies'? Your grandparents and before them used bar soap. All handmade, from scratch with natural, amazing oils. I thought, "What the heck can it hurt? Two weeks passed and my hair experienced some kind of metamorphosis, my skin became dry and my lips parched. I couldn't figure out what was happening. My mom told me I was detoxing. She said, " All of the toxins from those products are coming out. Stick with it! You'll be amazed. Your hair will be shiny and your skin will glow. Just hang in there." Well, wouldn't you know it? She was right. It took 3-4 weeks of my hair being greasy and my skin somewhat dry, but after that I couldn't believe it. People would ask me what I was using in my hair? How was it so shiny? It grew faster and thicker and my skin was soft and felt good. I went from having 10 items in my shower to one. I washed my hair and skin with the shampoo bar. I shaved and traveled with one bar of soap. Hassle

free. I was hooked and was in love. The apple cider vinegar hair rinse became my 'go to residue remover' and my hair was so luscious, I was amazed. It's been 14 years since I've been using a shampoo bar from head to toe. I'll never go back. Now I pass the 'Beware of Chemical' sheet along to other people who believed the way I used to. I'll never have to create another junk box again. Let's see if you can handle the switch? It's hard and fun and interesting all at the same time. Read the labels. Make a junk box and go from 10 products in your shower to one beautifully, handmade bar of soap. Trust me. You'll be hooked too. Remember the saying, ‘One man's junk is another man's treasure’? There is nothing in my junk box to treasure. Ever. The treasure is in our soap. We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. Visit our online store: natural.ca.
