MONTREAL CRESCENT STREET - While Montrealers are getting ready for the roaring engines of the F1 this coming Sunday, another kind of more musical roaring is taking over the downtown area. The traditional festival involving music, car exhibits, beer tasting, and various other forms of entertainment is holding its 18th edition starting the Thursday, June 8 and ending on Saturday, June 10. This year the festival is expanding with additional events being held on Maisonneuve Blvd. between Bishop and de la Montagne St.

Crescent between Ste. Catherine and Sherbrooke and now a section of Maisonneuve will be transformed "into a free venue for race aficionados, tourists and Montrealers to celebrate the biggest race in Canada. Every night, there are live performances on the main stage by top Canadian bands. The stage also draws crowds with driver appearances, autograph sessions and DJs mixing the hottest music all day long."

Although the musical component is certainly to attract a younger crowd, the whole set of activities programmed for the days of According to the organizers, once more the festival is well suited for families too.

Following last week’s announcement that Canadian-born comedy superstar Jim Carrey will return to Just For Laughs after a 27-year absence (he will be part of a panel discussion dealing with the new Showtime series “I’m Dying Up Here” – which is fantastic and must viewing for diehard comedy fans), the festival also unveiled the following additions to their always growing line-up of its 35th anniversary edition, which runs from July 12-31:

And one of the best values for your comedy dollar, the OFF-JFL and Zoofest series, will also feature these rare comedy jewels in hour-long shows in an intimate stand-up setting: Lil Rel Howery and his show “Lil Rel Howery and Friends” at the Katacombes (July 26, 27 and 29); Ryan Hamilton offers his clean, observational style of comedy that has won him many fans for six straight nights ( a show a night) from July 24-29 at the Salle Claude-Leveille at Place des Arts; British comic David Baddiel, after two critically acclaimed runs in London’s West End, brings his solo show “David Baddiel My Family: Not the Sitcom” to Just For Laughs for its North American premiere for 10 performances from July 20-23 at the Theatre Sainte-Catherine, and July 24-29 at La Chapelle; and Eugene Mirman returns to OFF-JFL with “Hold On”, as he invites several comedians to sir down and chat with him, and in turn, Mirman slices and dices into their personal stories and www.mtltimes.ca

*** And finally, here’s a personal story dealing with this year’s St. Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival. Since I started covering the festival back in 2012, I was content in just quietly catching shows and reviewing them for my column (with a few visits to Fringe Park and the occasional “11-second dance party” at the Friday night 13th Hour showcase), with never a thought crossing my mind about appearing in front of the audience. That all changed last Saturday night, at the annual Provincial Air Guitar Championships, which were held at the MainLine Theatre. The competition was divided into two parts: One with the contestants performing for one minute with a song of their choice, and after that, the five contestants who scored the most points participate in the final round, where they air guitar to a song selected by the judges.

In between, before intermission, they had the "Brave Souls" segment, in which anyone from the audience can choose from a list of 25 sanctioned songs and do their air guitar bit. So I decided to take the plunge and be one of those "Brave Souls". The song I chose was "Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin. How did I do? Well, I got enough points from the judges to make it to the final round! And how did I do in that round? Believe it or not, I finished in 2nd place! It was a fun night, and I wish the winner (who went by the stage name “Fingers Mc G-String”) the best of luck at the national air guitar championships next month in Toronto (if he wins that competition, he gets the right to compete in the world air guitar championships in Finland). Basically, I was glad I did it and surprised I made it this far (in fact, many of the contestants encouraged me to officially compete next year). Stay tuned next week for more Fringe Festival show reviews. #fringebuzz

STE ANNE DE BELLEVUE - Summer is always a special place in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. The on-island suburb is located at the western tip of Montreal and is the second oldest community in the West Island. Despite challenges faced by the flooding this spring, they managed to fend off the worst of it - and they have been in full gear for weeks now. It's a beautiful area situated between Lac des Deux-Montagnes and Lac Saint Louis - and there is so much to do and see there. People come from all over to spend a day strolling on the boardwalk along the canal - or visiting the shops and amazing restaurants like Dundees Deli & Bar, Stoolies Coffee House, Cunninghams Pub and Peter's Cape Cod along Sainte-Anne Street. The boardwalk is adjacent to the waterway where you can watch the second busiest locks in

12

Quebec in operation. Afterwards you can picnic or simply soak up some sun on the abundant green spaces. And there is even more to what makes Sainte-Anne's such a popular area. The Sainte-Anne's Market is a weekly farmers market with over 30 merchants selling locally raised and prepared foods, many of them organic. It is located on the waterfront at the corner of Saint-Pierre and Sainte-Anne streets at Lalonde Park, with different activities all summer long. Parking is also made easy during the summer. You can park your car for free, with no time limit, just down the road at the John Abbott College student parking lot on Lakeshore Street and board the free shuttle bus right into town. So next time you feel like heading out for something different to do, why not head to SainteAnne-de-Bellevue - it won't disappoint.

We actually started at 4486 Coloniale street, just south of Mont Royal at Soundcentral. Owner Shawn Central has a fair-sized space with mostly lps, some cds, dvds, t-shirts, concert posters and collectables as well. There is also coffee or tea served, and Shawn can tell you about the posters on the walls, many of which are for concerts he has attended over the years. My daughter found the lps were priced fairly, and plans to return soon. I asked

Shawn why he thought the lp had become popular again, and he answered that he believed it was our human nature to want a more intimate contact with what is purchased, so that in the end, although digital shopping for music can be done easily, there is nothing like the experience of a less perfect but more tactile listening experience. Alsace France - Under the radar Estate property founded 1896 by the Willm family

ALSACE, FRANCE - What is the basic criteria that makes a wine “food friendly”? The essential response is: when you take a sip, your mouth begins to salivate, and begin making a picture of a dish that would go well with the bottle. WINE The Terrases de Mayline 2015 ( SAQ # $18.55). A predominant blend of Roussanne 00552505, $13.55) blends the traditional with a lovely nose displaying white flowers, jasgrapes of the appellation such as Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. This is a lovely red displaying smoky black fruit scented with licorice. It is silky and polished in the mid palate with a nice tannic bite. Perfect for every day BBQ fare such as grilled sausages or flank steak.

We continued the tasting with the powerhouse Chemin des Olivettes, Côteaux du Languedoc ( SAQ # 11193194, $16.55). An assembly of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. A big boy with incredible depth of black fruit and salted meat. Polished and very fluid, structured with elegant tannins. Pass the wine with the short braised beef ribs. Almost indecent at this price. The Granges des Combes 2015 ( SAQ # 11661023, $19.75) was also equally stunning. The appellation of St-Chinian Roquebrun is a village appellation of Saint-Chinian. Between sea and mountain, at the foot of the regional park of High Languedoc, Roquebrun is a village dominated by sunlight. High altitude vineyards rub backs with orange, lemon and tangerine trees.

Floral nose with whole black peppercorns and tamari sauce. Elegant with fine grained tannins and very racy on the palate. I will have this wine any time with a filet mignon stir fry with chinese broccoli and dried shiitakes.

Vignoble du Rêveur Pierres Sauvages 2013 SAQ # 13211843 $19.40

Vignoble du Rêveur, is a new Alsatian brand from Mathieu Deiss, son of acclaimed vigneron Jean-Michel Deiss of Domaine Marcel Deiss. In addition to working in the vines and cellar of his family domaine, Mathieu manages this spectacular 17.3 acre property, making exclusively estate grown wines. Parcels are located mostly in the commune of Bennwihr, just outside of the valley of Kaysersberg. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert, and biodynamic by Demeter.

Almost to the end of the tasting we had our last red, Les Fiefs d'Aupenac 2015. ( SAQ # 10559166, $20.50). Striking nose of potpourri, tobacco and red currants.
