As the barbeque (BBQ) season is finally here, Times readers can find a wealth of information about BBQs at Joey Services in Pierrefonds. The store has specialized in selling BBQs, spare parts, accessories, charcoal, and propane tank refilling since 1974. The company also offers BBQ repairs.

Premium units such as the Prestige V Napoleon sell for up to $6,000. “Sure, you can find BBQs for only about $200 at some big box stores,” claims Feigin. “But such a unit might not last more than two seasons. After that, it can be difficult to find replacement parts. With imported BBQs flooding the market, people are buying looks at a cheap price. But at Joey Services, you buy performance, parts availability, product longevity, and warranty backup.

When spiders are not to blame, Joey Services has a vast selection of replacement parts. “Sometimes we’ve had a customer park in the lot and start walking toward the door while holding a BBQ burner,” Feigin notes. “Even before the customer walks into the store, my sales staff looking out the window can recognize what brand and model of burner it is; they will have a replacement unit sitting on the counter for the customer. That’s how well we know our stuff!” Joey Services’ 700 sq. foot showroom is stocked with new BBQs that are well-built and unlikely to need many replacement parts. Brands carried include Broil King, Napoleon,

“And you can get your BBQ propane tank filled at Joey’s,” Feigin adds. “A replacement exchange tank will cost as high as $34, but to refill your tank here costs much less. And you will not have to wait long for it to be done.” Feigin has a staff of up to six employees working for him during the season. “I figure that if you ask West Islanders where to go to get BBQs, BBQ parts and propane, three out of five will mention Joey Services,” asserts Feigin. “Even the big box stores often refer customers here. I don’t consider anybody really to be competition for Joey Services.”

“It’s amazing what you can cook on a BBQ,” maintains Feigin who points out the many different culinary styles that can be accommodated in backyards. “You can use a BBQ to bake pizza, you can cedar plank fish, you can shish kebab right on the spit, you can fry bacon and eggs on a griddle. You can even bake a cake in a BBQ...”

Napoleon BBQs now come with a charcoal tray accessory. This gives the option of using either propane or charcoal to cook with. Light the charcoal with the propane

Joey Services also carries an impressive array of accessories, including ‘pig tail’ steak flippers which do not damage the meat, cedar planks for cooking fish and other items such as beer can chicken holders. You can also buy halogen lights that fit onto the handle of the BBQ so you can clearly see what you’re cooking at night. There are also many marinades and sauces for sale. “Some of the sauces are way too spicy for me,” laughs Feigin. “But there is a demand for these things and it can be difficult to find them in supermarkets.” “Tanks a lot and Have a Grate Day”

July 13 saw the commercial release of Father and Guns 2 (De père en flic 2), a madein-Quebec police comedy. Indications are that this sequel might do even better than the original Father and Guns, the biggest box office hit of any French language movie made in Canada. That original movie also reaped in honours such as Golden Reel Award.

“Father and Guns 2 is showing on 122 screens across Quebec,” producer Denise Robert told The Times. “Cinema owners are confident that the movie will do well against new Hollywood releases.”

“To enjoy this movie, it is not essential to have seen Father and Guns Part 1” added screen writer Émile Gaudreault. “Part 2 is a film on its own.” www.mtltimes.ca WEDNESDAY

The father, Jacques (played by Michel Côté) and Marc Laroche (Louis-José Houde) are trying to crack a high profile mafia case. The plan is to infiltrate a couples’ therapy camp in the Laurentians to get close to the Montreal mafia boss's right hand man (Patrice Robitaille) who is there with his girlfriend (Julie Le Breton). TOM IV: FLOWER POWER

A whirlwind of colours lights up the Sculpture Garden of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) this summer with TOM IV: FLOWER POWER, a work of public art displayed along Du Musée Avenue until October 29th. Highlighting the 375th anniversary of Montréal and the 50th anniversary of Expo 67, this installation created by the landscape architect Claude Cormier is a paean to creativity and the psychedelic spirit of the sixties.

20

TOM IV is over 57 m long and consists of 15,000 temporary overlay markers (TOMs) in 10 colours that shimmer like fireworks. Punctuated by circular benches that invite visitors to take possession of the space, it extends the circuit of the exhibition of public art La Balade pour la Paix displayed along Sherbrooke Street West between the sector

of the MMFA and Concordia University and the sector of McCord Museum and McGill University. “This summer sees an explosion of colours on Du Musée Avenue”, says landscape architect Claude Cormier.

Executed thanks to the support of the Ville de Montréal – Arrondissement Ville — Marie, TOM IV: FLOWER POWER – LE POUVOIR DES FLEURS is laid out in the heart of the CGI and Max and Iris Stern Sculpture Garden, which comprises 26 artworks including Dale Chihuly’s Sun, now an icon of Montreal. It should be noted that TOM IV is the fourth installation by the firm Claude Cormier et Associés on Du Musée Avenue. The series started in 2012 with TOM I: Field of Daisies (3,500 TOMS); in 2013, TOMS II – Field of Poppies (8,000 TOMS); in 2014, TOM III: Mirage (10,500 TOMS).

his year, 2017, marks one hundred five years since the RMS Titanic, a passenger liner and pride of the White Star Line, sank on the night of April 15, 1912.The supposedly ‘unsinkable’ ship struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank within three hours of the collision. Of the 2,223 people on board, 1,517 died including many well-known personalities of the day. Although the ship was enroute from England to New York City, the disaster had many connections with Montreal according to Titanic: The Canadian Story by Alan Hustak. It was the Montreal Gazette which first broke the worldwide news that the ship was sinking.

1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire

In a remote corner of the Mount Royal cemetery lie the graves of Charles Melvin Hays and his wife, Clare Jennings Gregg. Hays, who was the general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, is among 12 Titanic passengers or crew buried in Montreal. But the only thing on Hays’ tombstone to indicate a connection with the Titanic disaster is the date of his demise: April 15, 1912.

Hays stayed aboard the ship after leading his wife and daughter to the lifeboats, assuring them that the ship would stay afloat for hours and that he would be fine, this according to the Encyclopedia Titanica. A few days later, his corpse was recovered from the frigid North Atlantic waters and shipped to Montreal via Halifax. Gregg eventually outlived her husband by 43 years. Despite the many years that have passed, the image remains heart-breaking of Hays cheerfully waving to his wife, perhaps yelling, “I’ll be fine, dear. See you in New York!”

scene around 7:40 a.m. on April 16, finding “about 800 survivors in 20 lifeboats.” This was some four hours after the Titanic had slipped beneath the waves. There were only enough lifeboats and rafts aboard the Titanic for 1,178 people, which was in compliance with maritime law at that time. But laws changed as a result of this disaster to ensure that there are sufficient lifeboats for everybody aboard a ship.

Photo: John Symon

Charles Melvin Hays, who is buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery, was among the passengers who died in the Titanic disaster of April 15, 1912. His wife, Clara Jennings Gregg, was also a passenger on the Titanic, but made it safely into a lifeboat.

1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire

Another leading member of Montreal society who died in the disaster was Harry Markland Molson, described as the richest Canadian aboard the Titanic. Molson, who owned the Molson Bank, was also the first mayor of Dorval. His body was never found.

Harry Markland Molson

As the 802-foot Titanic rapidly filled with water from a gaping gash to her hull, a distress signal was put out over the ship’s wireless. Of the many ships hearing the distress call, the Virginian picked up the call and radioed its head office asking for permission to alter course and proceed to the Titanic’s rescue. That head office was at The Allan Company Co. (333 rue de la Commune in Montreal); the information was quickly relayed to The Gazette’s marine reporter, making the newspaper the first in the world to learn of the disaster. The first rescue ship, the Carpathia arrived on the 26

Molson Bank

The haunting story of this disaster was turned into a 1997 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart, among others. This movie cost an estimated $200 million to produce, but grossed some $1.8 billion in sales which remained a box office record for many years. There are many elements of the Titanic story including many “what ifs.” The ship was going at full speed through an iceberg field at night when the collision happened, apparently because the Titanic was attempting to establish a new speed record for crossing the Atlantic. What if she had gone a little slower? What if there had been more lifeboats? What if the crewmen spotting for icebergs had been given binoculars? There are also suggestions that if she had not tried to veer away from the iceberg, and actually hit it straight on, the Titanic might have stayed afloat until rescue ships arrived. Hustak’s book lists a dozen locations around Montreal that all have connections with the luxury liner which sank a century ago, including The White Star Line office on St. Jacques Street where tickets for the Titanic were sold (presumably for the return voyage from New York to England). www.vehiculepress.com/montreal/titanic.html Two years later, a similar accident saw another passenger ship, the Empress of Ireland, steaming from Quebec City to Liverpool. But she was struck amidships by a Norwegian freighter on May 29, 1914, sinking quickly near Rimouski, Quebec and claiming 1,012 lives. The Times understands that some of the 465 Empress of Ireland survivors had also survived the Titanic disaster.
