The Montreal Highland Games are celebrating their 40th
The Montreal Highland Games are proud to announce they are returning to the green grounds of the Douglas Hospital in Verdun to celebrate their 40th anniversary on Sunday August 6th with full Highland pageantry, in collaboration with Principal Sponsors Pembroke Private Wealth Management and the St. Andrew’s Society of Montreal.
The day will include pipe band, highland dance and heavy weight competitions including the caber toss, sheaf toss, hammer throw and putting the stone from competitors from throughout North America. Celtic bands including Mudmen and Mariner’s Curse will be performing in the Ceilidh entertainment tent www.mtltimes.ca
in the afternoon and evening program.
The Montreal Highland Games have been held since 1976, picking up from the Caledonian Games that had taken place between 1856 to 1973. Over the past 40 years, the Montreal Highland Games have become one of the premier events in the North American Highland Games circuit. The Montreal Highland Games are always held on the Sunday following the Glengarry Highland (Maxville) Games, which makes it a “double header” for pipe bands, athletes, highland dancers and spectators. Among competitors this has become known as the M&M weekend.

Scots have long and historic ties with the province of Québec. They were instrumental in the building of the Lachine Canal, turning Montreal into one of the most important and prosperous ports in North America. Scots constructed the first bridge across the St-Lawrence River and notable Scot, Henry Morgan, built the first department store in Canada. Not to mention the numerous philanthropists of Scottish descent that are responsible for the funding of various institutions including museums, universities and hospitals such as James McGill, Peter Redpath, David M. Stewart which has shaped our province’s cultural landscape.

However, celebrating Scottish culture doesn’t require Scottish roots. It only requires you bring a little heart to the Games!

Medeival combat Photo by Pascal Fleurelien
For the kids –Due to last year’s success, kids will again have their own mini Highland Games with their very own caber toss, hammer throw and Highland costumes to try on. There will be four bouncy castles, face painting and medieval battles by trained professionals where kids can partake in play “combat” training. This is, of course, in addition to all the Highland Games events where children are competing, namely, in the Highland dance competitions, as well as the band competitions.
For the adults –The Celtic village will feature an array of Celtic merchants with clothing, musical instruments, jewelry, baked goods, culinary delights and Scotch sampling, along with pipe band and fiddle and harp performances, Scottish Clan displays, Highland dancing and many more activities!

A very special traditional tug of war will take place benefitting the Douglas Hospital. Opportunities to participate and donate are welcomed.

ing Hard Day's Night, Day Tripper, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Twist and Shout, Get Back, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Strawberry Fields, and imagine the reunion that never was. The end of The Beatles era was never thought to be in sight when The Beatles played their last show on the roof of the Apple Offices in 1969. Imagine what would have been if The Beatles continued their journey. Enter a time capsule and turn back in time to what would have been John Lennon’s 40th Birthday - October 9, 1980. For one night, the Fab Four come together again on stage, after a decade apart, performing other hits like Back in the USSR, Live and Let Die, Got to Get you into My Life, My Sweet Lord, Hey Jude, and many more hits never performed live, plus several other classics… Imagine a night that never happened, but which feels totally surreal! The original production which established itself as one of the West End’s most popular shows when it opened in 2012, and which recently celebrated its 1,000th performance, showcased the music of The Beatles from their humble beginnings in Liverpool’s Cavern Club, through the pinnacle of Beatlemania, to their later studio masterpieces.

Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story, the show that inspired a generation of multi-million selling juke-box musicals including Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Million Dollar Quartet, and We Will Rock You, is back by popular demand! With more than 22 million music fans having lived the experience since it opened in London’s West End in 1989, Buddy speaks an international language, and continues to thrill rockin’ audiences from 8 to 80 the world over. Both publicly and critically acclaimed, Buddy tells the enduring tale of the musical icon’s meteoric rise to fame and his final legendary performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 22. In 18 short months, the Texasborn boy revolutionized the face of contemporary music influencing everyone from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen. Boasting a phenomenally multi-talented cast, together they present two terrific hours of music with over 20 of his greatest hits, including the timeless classics That’ll Be the Day, Peggy Sue, Oh Boy and Rave On. I believe this is testament to a great show – the first of its kind – and to the enduring appeal of Buddy Holly and what he represents; a youthful energy, huge talent and creativity, combined with a determination to make a lasting impression in this world.” Writer/Producer Alan Janes says “Audiences dance in the aisles every night to our enactment of the story of a young man whose musical career spanned an all-too-brief period but whose music will be remembered forever”. Meet Meaghan Sherriffs, Saint-Lazare’s Miss World Canada Candidate By: Jill Clark / mtltimes.ca
Saint-Lazare’s Beauty Competes for Miss World Canada
Fifty-seven beautiful contestants flew from across Canada to compete for the Miss World Canada crown on July 22 in Toronto. Among them, was Saint-Lazare’s Meaghan Sherriffs. Unlike some of the other contestants, Sherriff had only a single whirlwind week to prepare. Top Model Search Canada visited Montreal

from July 4th through 9th. Meaghan signed up for the challenge, where she was asked if she was interested in competing for Miss World Canada. “They chose me!” she was thrilled for the opportunity. To be selected, Meaghan had to prove both her runway walk and general self presentation on stage.

Preparation for the competition included endless choreography. “There’s a proper stance you have to have on stage,” she said. One foot at twelve, the other at two. Between learning two dance routines, and practicing their movement across the stage, the contestants didn’t have much time for anything else throughout the week.
When they weren’t rehearsing, the contestants were busy with public appearances. They visited Ripley’s Aquarium, for example, and appeared on Global for both afternoon and morning timeslots.

This year’s competition focused on “Beauty with a Purpose.” The contestants were directed to raise money for the charity partner, The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Aside from their sponsorships, one challenge had each girl write about a charity of their choice to raise awareness for causes dear to their hearts. The competition also included a fashion show, swimsuit competition, question period, and an optional talent showcase. The girls did not know the results of their week-long labour until the night the competition aired—just like the rest of the country.
