Josh Adams‌ Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue's Best Kept Secret! By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

6

Sometimes you come across someone unexpectedly, someone who makes you stop in your tracks - and last weekend, a musician did just that. His name is Josh Adams‌ and he could be Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue's best kept secret. It was a beautiful, sunny morning as we headed out to Sainte-Anne's popular Farmer's Market - inspired not only by the many kiosks which offer organic and local produce - but the garlic festival taking place that day. After a few tastings and price checking, we purchased a bunch of the wonderfully braided bulbs and then decided to take a stroll along the boardwalk towards the canal's locks. I could hear some music up ahead and as I approached an open public area, I came upon a young musician playing guitar. Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, sitting on a stool with his guitar case opened on the ground in front of a set of speakers, ready to welcome some hoped-for coins, was a scene I had come upon

before - but when he began to sing, I stopped in my tracks. His name is Josh Adams and the quality of his voice and vocal control was absolutely stunning. I listened, mesmerized, and then quickly pulled out my iPhone to video record him. People needed to know about him, if they already didn't. Between songs, I went over to talk with him and not only did he possess a gifted talent, he was also a very warm, mature and charming 23 year old - and in my opinion, a relatively unknown artist soon to be very well-known. I could say much more about him, but I'll let the video speak for itself. Being caught up in the moment, the visual is not as clear as his voice came through - which is what you want to hear. You can find out more about Josh on his website at: www.joshadams.ca

Montreal Fashion Week 2017 By: Arturo Las Pinas Jr / mtltimes.ca

When Montreal Fashion Week ended after 2013, the festival organizers took on the task of making sure Le Festival Mode et Design would thrive more than ever before and that vibe was truly echoed at the 17th edition. To co-incide with the city's 375th anniversary, absent were the usual commercial brands like Guess & Marciano or Le Chateau. Instead, models walked in attire from collections by designers from both Cégep Marie-Victorin School of Fashion and Lasalle College. Quebec designers Denis Gagnon, Marie Saint Pierre and Philippe Dubuc presented their collections in an outdoor venue with a water fountain that made the experience feel like a Versace or Dolce & Gabbana show. To close the festival, Mélanie Joly, the Minister of Canadian Heritage, unveiled the last show, a showcase of Canadian designers to the theme of celebrating Canada 150. www.mtltimes.ca

Valerie Plante Greets Residents

Valérie has maintained that her campaign 'will put the interests of Montrealers first. So it is important for me to go to into the field, to listen and discuss with citizens the best solutions which will make a real difference in their daily lives'. It is refreshing to see a politician keep to their words. "On November 5th, Montrealers will have important choices to make. They will have to choose the person who can better manage public finances. They will have to choose the one who will manage the roadwork (better) and unblock the metropolis. They will be able to choose the person who will best understand their reality… and who will be able to put in place the most realistic solutions to meet their needs and aspira-

16

tions," Valérie was cited as saying on their website. She is articulate and well-informed, and as you can see in the short interview recorded that morning, ready to lead Montrealers with transparency and with projects addressing major problems facing the city - all with concrete initiatives involving the input of its residents. As the party's first election slogan goes, 'THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB. VALÉRIE PLANTE. MAYOR OF MONTREAL'. And although it raised a few eyebrows - while going up against an 'old boys club', it just might be the perfect slogan. To find out more about Projet Montréal go to: http://en.projetmontreal.org/

TEDx Montreal Women: building bridges to create a new future By: Elsa-Maret / mtltimes.ca

Each year, TEDx Montreal Women starts a new conversation with a different theme: this year’s is about bridges and how we can use them to create an understanding about our differences. Speakers will share their experiences and perspectives which “offer bridges across race, religious belief, personal opinions” and other topics that may divide us. The TED and TEDx movement is here to raise consciousness and awareness about the issues that matter and to actively participate in an ongoing discussion. “It is when people are shown new perspectives that unexpected paths will appear.” – TEDxMontrealWomen Some of this year’s influential speakers include, Carol Devine, and environmentalist and humanitarian who co-launched the museum of AIDS in South Africa and helped document an Arctic clean up in Svalbard. Executive Director of the Native Women’s Shelwww.mtltimes.ca

ulating it under government control. Currently, no details seem to be publicly available about what Ottawa's plans might be for quality controls with marijuana sales. Various other food and drug products are subject to quality controls by Agriculture Canada and Health Canada. Parents discussing marijuana use with their adolescent children should realize that marijuana today is often three times more potent than it was 30 years ago according to SmithsonianMag. Canada has the highest use of marijuana among adolescents among developed countries with some 28 percent of 15year-olds reporting to have tried it within the past year according to international comparisons conducted by the World Health Organization. Despite Ottawa's stated intentions to legalize marijuana, it currently remains illegal except for special exemptions such as medicinal use as authorized by Health Canada. But being illegal is not a major barrier for growers who reportedly have already made marijuana Quebec's most lucrative agricultural crop.

As the countdown continues toward legalization of marijuana in Canada, presumably by mid 2018, new health concerns are surfacing about marijuana, also called cannabis. Researchers in both Colorado (where marijuana is legalized) and Germany (where it is not) are finding contaminants--such as lead--in marijuana samples analyzed according to the New England Journal of Medicine and SmithsonianMag. Researchers were initially baffled by some cases of lead intoxication in Germany until they realized that the patients were heavy cannabis users. Samples of marijuana tested averaged about 10 percent lead by weight. Symptoms of lead poisoning can include: high blood pressure, anemia, learning difficulties, irritability, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Speculation is that lead is deliberately added to marijuana by unscrupulous drug dealers to increase their revenues by $1500 USD per kilogram. Other contaminants, including fungus and pesticides, have been reported in the USA. Cannabis seems to be commonly perceived as a “healthy” or “natural” drug among its users; these new findings might alter that perception. But there also is some truth to these beliefs: The Times has already reported about how a McGill University professor, Dr Mark Ware, has documented that cannabis can have health benefits, especially for palliative care and for appetite gain. Meanwhile, The Times has heard many local anecdotes of houses and apartments being converted into clandestine “grow ops” to cultivate marijuana, often with illegal and dangerous connections to Hydro Quebec. Not only does this expose neighbours to fire risks, but residences are often rendered unfit to live in by the heat and humidity needed to quickly grow marijuana. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected to office in 2015, promising to legalize marijuana across Canada. Proponents of such plans often talk about taking the marijuana business away from organized crime and reg-
