summer in our city that wasn't the best on the weather front, but when it comes to celebrations, nobody can complain. The 375th anniversary of Montreal was lavishly celebrated, Canada's sesquicentennial got a decent commemoration as well and even the 50th anniversary of Expo deserved some cocktail parties and fond remembrances from those who were young then. But now the party is over, and it is the time to do some balance: Montreal spent over a billion dollar in the celebration of its 375th anniversary. Some of the events were

Montreal celebrations? Here are some of my reflections on the subject. If I have to highlight the best of all the events marking the 375 years of Montreal, I will not hesitate to pick the performance by the Giant Marionettes, an outdoor and free event that attracted thousands of spectators. The brainchild of French director and actor Jean-Luc Courcoult, the Little Giant, the Deep Sea Diver, and the giant dog, captivated the audience with their well-synchronized walk around downtown Montreal demonstrated at the same time grace and power. continued on Page 9

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Coutu also alleges that Technoparc hired trappers who snared and skinned coyotes in the area, leaving the carcasses behind. "The coyotes were not hurting anybody; they were actually helping bird species that nest on the ground, chasing away foxes and raccoons." Coutu estimates he has put in almost 500 hours of volunteer birdwatching in Technoparc, leading

His work seriously challenges the environmental study that previously described the area as "having little ecological value." Summer is over; the party is over too! continued from Page 3

The performance by the giant marionettes displayed artistic creativity and technological ability. It was a great event to celebrate the city with the additional element of being accessible to all audiences. The second best event was Cité Mémoire that projected various segments of the history of Montreal on the walls of some buildings in the Old Montreal area. Particularly spectacular was the presentation on the large wall of the Palais de Justice, highlighting the history of Montreal from the time of its aboriginal inhabitants to the present day. This series of projections was an event that provided a much-needed view of the history not only of the city but also of Canada and Quebec, in a way that was at the same time entertaining and innovative. The Open Air Museum, Ballade de la Paix, on Sherbrooke St. featuring different samples of modern public art created a delightful ambience around that street. Flags from each of the existing independent countries from all over the world contributed to give the exhibit an international

flavour, although the art works were just from fewer of a dozen countries. Although the sight of multicoloured flags is always somehow festive, some may argue that such display wasn't necessary. (And people from Kosovo have pointed out that the flag of their country wasn't there, despite being an

independent nation since 2008 recognized by Canada). This outdoor exhibit was put together by McGill University and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. As for the worst or at least the event that was the most misplaced, the nomination should go to the Formula E race. It

mind, there is no way to make him change it, even if there are overwhelming

reasons for that. Holding the electric cars race on various streets in the eastern part of downtown added to the already high cost of bringing the event to Montreal (allegedly 24 million), since it was necessary to install stands for the spectators and a few elevated passages for people in the area. Residents in the sector were the most inconvenienced and unhappy with the race: they were practically locked up in their neighbourhoods with great difficulties to go shopping or reach the metro station to go to work. The location chosen for the race is hard to understand considering that Montreal has in the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve a far more appropriate venue for this type of events. Besides these special events, the usual festivals delivered once more highquality performances, from the FrancoFolies to the Jazz Festival, to Just for Laughs, to Fantasia, to Nuits d'Afrique, and closing the season these days the World Film Festival. They all managed to satisfy both the local public and the many tourists who visit Montreal every year. Yeah, the weather was so-so, but the party was great!

Passions, sorrow, mental labyrinths: The movies at the WFF by the directors to convey the idea which at times seems somehow forced and artificial. The plot, however, is in general appealing, although some

A large crowd for Chinese movies, in this case the historic drama "The Hidden Sword"

he 41st edition of the Montreal World Film Festival (WFF) is underway and despite its obvious difficulties—lack of printed programs, some venues too distant—one has to salute the almost heroic effort that the organizers have put in making this event possible. There is no question that Serge Losique doesn't plan to surrender to the intentions of those who want to destroy the festival. He got some backing from Quebecor to save the Imperial Theatre, and in his inaugural speech, he didn't mention the problems. He preferred to talk about ecology, instead of a red carpet this time the festival had a green carpet. Beyond those extra-cinematic considerations, when one realizes that despite all odds, the WFF, at least until the time I am writing this note, has presented in its Official Competition category an exceptional selection of films, one has to feel good. Let's start with the opening movie, "Anna K a re n i n a — V ro n s k y ' s Story" directed by Karen Shakhnazarov. The novel by Leo Tolstoy has been taken to the screen on a few occasions, but this Russian movie focuses on the view that Count Vronsky (Max Matveev) has of his relationship with the beautiful Anna Karenina (Elizaveta Boyarskaya). The dialogue between Dr. Sergey Karenin (Kirill Grebenshchikov) and Vronsky, in an isolated part of Manchuria, is what unravels the story with all the elements of passion and the sorrow for Anna's fate. It is Russian filmmaking at its best: realistic scenes of the 1904 RussoJapanese War, an excellent re-creation of the period (the scene of the dance at the Karenine's place is a cinematic beauty), and solid acting. One just hopes that some national • September 2, 2017

more dramatic twist when our protagonist, an Albanian refugee living illegally in London who impersonates Elvis, is wrongly hired to entertain the British troops during the Balkan War of 1999 in Bosnia-Herzegovina.When his real identity is discovered, he manages to escape from Sarajevo, still wearing his Elvis costume. His life, however, will take a turn for the worse when he gets in the middle of the brutal conflict in which he would also find an unusual gang of child-soldiers, in fact, orphans escaping the conflict too. In the category First Works, I had the chance to see "Veronica" by Mexican directors Carlos Algara and Alejandro Martinez Beltran which presents an interesting plot in the form of some mental labyrinth whose real meaning is only revealed at the end of the movie. My only objection is to the recourses used

director Julius Ševcík to the life of Jan Masaryk— son of the founder of Czechoslovakia—in his film "A Prominent Patient." The main character played by Karel Roden is a diplomat at the critical time of Hitler's demands over the Sudetenland. Masaryk, however, is at the same time battling his own demons in the form of drug addiction. "A Prominent Patient" is also a serious contender for some distinction at the WFF although the subject may be a little bit obscure for many people. Then we have this unexpected jewel coming from an Albania: "Elvis Walks Home" directed by Fatmir Koci. This is a movie that at first seems to start on a comedic www.hdgratuit.com note but soon takes us on a

I Must Say by Martin Short

A

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

(Harper $19.99)

fter reading Martin Short’s memoir I Must Say (which is now available in paperback), I have to admit that his life and career has mirrored that classical image of a person whose chief occupation is to make people laugh: laughing on the outside and crying on the inside. Besides going through episodes of self-doubt (which led him to turn down an opportunity to audition for Second City back in 1972, a decision he later regretted, but ended up joining the Toronto troupe later in the decade), Short endured a series of personal tragedies throughout the course of his 64 years. His older brother David was killed in a car accident in 1962; his mother died of cancer in 1968, followed by his father from heart disease two years later; and in 2010, he lost his beloved wife Nancy (whom he first met while they were appearing together in the Toronto production of “Godspell” in 1972) after a brave battle with cancer after 30 years of marriage. But somehow through all that sadness, Short has remained a shining example of strength and courage, as he continues to entertain millions through his kinetic, nonstop abilities to sing, dance and make people laugh through his memorable stints as a regular cast member on SCTV and SNL, from such hit movies as “Three Amigos”, “Innerspace” and “Father of the Bride”, and his assortment of eccentric characters including vain celebrity interviewer Jiminy Glick, androgynous wedding planner Franck, albino rock star Jackie Rogers Jr., and of course, his best known alter ego, the frippy-haired, rapidlytalkative, constantly gesticulating Ed Grimley (whose catchphrase “I must say” is borrowed for the title of this book). The book traces Short’s

• September 2, 2017

life from his early years in Hamilton (where his father was a top executive at the Stelco steel company), and shared his love of show business and Broadway with his mother (and she gave him an actual taste of the Great White Way during a memorable family vacation to New York City in

Martin Short playing ed Grimley

1965). It was while studying social work at McMaster University that he met two fellow students who were to forever change his life and career: future SCTV colleagues Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas, and began performing onstage in different university productions. In February of 1972, after he graduated from McMaster, Short gave himself a year to find himself steady work as a performer. Shortly afterwards, he landed a role in the legendary Toronto production of the musical “Godspell”, which also included Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber and a young aspiring comic actress from Detroit named Gilda Radner, whom Martin fell for immediately and started a passionate – and sometimes tempestuous – relationship. Although Short has experienced many ups and downs in his professional career, he has recalled them with a great deal of honesty and insight, not to mention utilizing plenty of fascinating behind-thescenes anecdotes that will keep the reader wanting to continue along nonstop, eager to find out

more about Martin Short’s world. For example, we find out why he found working on SCTV such a delight, while he regarded his first and only year as a regular on SNL such a nightmare (although on his first show, he appeared in four sketches and segments that became instant sensations with the audience, including the short film about the brothers duo who were the most unlikely Olympic synchronized swimmers); how he became the buffer between the volatile relationship that developed between Chevy Chase and director John Landis on the set of “Three Amigos”; how his star-studded Christmas parties that he and Nancy hosted in their California home (which attracted the likes of Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and Paul Shaffer) became notorious for the biting song parodies that Short performed, which were specially written for the occasion; and in the most interesting feature of the book, Short gives some page time to six of his most memorable characters, in which he explains their respective origins, followed by a page or two where they get to have their say on what it’s like to be a part of their creator’s book (for example, Ed Grimley was created in 1977 on the stage of Second City Toronto’s Old Firehouse venue, and has used the character whenever he and Nancy needed to smooth out some tense moments throughout their relationship). Well I must say that I Must Say is a very engaging memoir of a comic actor of the highest calibre who is more than a very funny, talented individual; Martin Short is also a very humble, spiritual person who is indeed grateful for what he has and what he had over the past 65 years. As well, he has the strength to face such professional and personal difficulties by finding solace through his first love – the stage – and for a couple of hours a night, give a live audience a great deal of laughs. It is what Ed, Jackie, Jiminy – and Nancy – would want him to do.

8. Do not schedule the move-in for the weekend; try to move during the week when the community is fully staffed. 9. Inquire about a “Be Our Guest” program. Some communities provide furnished rooms for a few days at no charge to help the future resident get acclimated. 10. Be sure to complete the resident history questionnaires before moving in as it helps the staff in the building become even more involved with the new resident if they already know their history, likes and dislikes. When there is a move into a retirement home, the lack of familiarity with both the environment and the other residents can be quite intimidating. Very often, family members can feel guilty about placing loved ones into a senior residence. The reality is that a move will most likely be for the best. See ad page 20

Sun Youth has had another very succesful summer

S

ummer is almost over, which means that Sun Youth’s Day camp has once again successfully helped hundreds of children from 5 to 12 years old spend a wonderful summer of discovery. For the 24th consecutive year, children who participated in the Sun Youth Day camp had the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy a ton of exciting and educational activities under the supervision of qualified counselors. The children grouped by age (5-6 years, 7-8 years, 9-10 years and 11-12 years) were offered excursions, arts & crafts and theatre activities as well as picnics. They went on field trips including visiting amusement parks, local museums and

aquatic parks. They also participated in sporting activities under the supervision of the Sun Youth Bike Patrol. Once again, campers from 5 to 8 years of age were offered swimming and aquatic safety lessons from the Montreal Institute of Swimming. Through these weekly lessons, they were able to learn valuable skills so they could feel safe during aquatic activities. Once again, the Bike Man, an anonymous donor, offered his financial support to Sun Youth by providing life jackets. This summer, Sun Youth also helped to feed the curiosity of its campers with its urban garden. Thanks to the unwavering support and weekly workshops of the Sentier

Urbain and to the financial contribution of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Sun Youth garden, located at its headquarters, has become a place where campers are able to learn about ecology in a fun and constructive ways. During the summer, they were able to grow vegetables and take care of them, all under the supervision of Sentier Urbain’s animator. Once again, a portion of the food grown by the campers was used to prepare their meals while the rest will go the Sun Youth food bank. Sun Youth is truly grateful to its partners for their valuable help and support and would like to thank everyone who made this summer an unforgettable one!
