Spike Lee wows large audience at Montreal Black film festival Spike Lee takes photos with the crowd at the Hall Theatre at Concordia University

cclaimed film director Spike Lee has been a life-long fan of Michael Jackson and his music. “His joy for life was demonstrated in his music and performing,” he said. “And in turn, he has had a lasting impact on a new generation of artists.” Lee was in town on October 1 for a special screening to mark the Canadian premiere of his documentary “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall”, as part of the 12th edition of the Montreal International Black Film Festival, and attracted a huge crowd that packed the Hall Theatre at Concordia University. Through plenty of concert footage, TV appearances and interviews with many of Jackson’s contemporaries (i.e. Berry Gordy, Suzanne de Passe, Valerie Simpson), family members (brothers Marlon and Jackie), and some of today’s leading recording artists (i.e., John Legend, Pharrell Williams and even Kobe Bryant), Lee chronicles the crucial 10-year period from 1969 to 1979 when Michael Jackson transformed himself from the cute idol of millions of teenyboppers to the iconic King of Pop. “Can you imagine Trump with the nuclear codes? It’s more like WTF.” - Spike Lee WEDNESDAY

WEDNESDAY

October 5, 2016

The second half of the documentary is dedicated to Jackson’s monumental 1979 album “Off the Wall” and through those interviews, concert footage and early music videos, gives a song-by-song examination of how and why “Off the Wall” was so important to the rock music world in general, and the future path of Jackson’s career in particular. It was amazing to see how many of the interviewees got giddy when they were discussing the songs, whether they had a role in its production or not, and how much they enjoyed listening to them when they were first released, as well as onto the present day. Following the screening, Lee held a question and answer session with festival founder and president Fabienne Colas. Sporting San Francisco 49ers/Colin Kaepernick gear, Lee answered a steady stream of questions from the members of the packed crowd, ranging from Michael Jackson’s impact on pop music, how he put together the documentary, his life as a filmmaker, and even some current issues that are currently making the headlines.

NEWS

Here is a sampling of what Lee said that night: -On Donald Trump: “Right now, the election has gotten to the point where you have to flip a coin, and that’s scary. Can you imagine Trump with the nuclear codes? It’s more like WTF. This is a scary time right now in America.” -On former Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban: “Why did they trade my man? He was the face of the team. They should have traded him to the New York Rangers.” On being an acclaimed, award-winning filmmaker: “This is a dream job for me. When you get to do what you love – and make a living doing what you love – you’re blessed.” As well, Lee revealed that he is currently working on a 10-episode series for Netflix based on one of his early films, “She’s Gotta Have It”, which follows the characters, and what has happened to them since the time of the film’s release. He also hinted about the possibility of a third documentary about Michael Jackson, which would deal with the story behind his legendary 1982 album “Thriller”.

Our decorations of Fall colors including plump pumpkins and skinny scarecrows provide a great backdrop for taking a family photo. Say BOO!! A special craft workshop will be set up in one of the rail cars where children can create their own original Halloween mask. To end your family outing, why not hop on a period streetcar, ride the outdoor miniature railway or our passenger train (Sunday afternoons only). Haunted Montreal’s Red Light District tour debut

Donovan King and Haunted Montreal have designed a ghostly tour of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles

D

By Jillian Clark mtltimes.ca www.mtltimes.ca

o you find yourself wondering about the people of Montreal’s past as you explore our beautiful city? Montreal is built on a thick layer of diverse history: some of which is a little spooky; the rest may be a little risky. Few people know the history of the streets we frequent daily. However, the debut of the Red Light District tour hopes to change that. Donovan King and Haunted Montreal have designed a ghostly tour of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles combining the city’s rich history with Halloween haunts of the city’s past. The guided tours begin on Friday, October 14. Do the names bank robber Machine-Gun-Molly, or serial killer Dr. Thomas Neill Cream ring any bells? If not, Donovan can fill you in on their ghostly sins from the forgotten era. Quartier des Spectacles was once the location of Montreal’s Red Light District. All sorts of unholy and unimaginable acts took place here: gambling, drinking, and exotic dancing are just the tip of the sins committed on the site. While the area was eventually rebranded as entertainment central, the ghosts of days past are still rumoured to haunt their old hunting grounds. WEDNESDAY

WEDNESDAY HALLOWEEN

October 5, 2016

The Red Light District of Montreal was in its heyday during the days of prohibition. “People came from all over North America to partake because booze was illegal everywhere, except for Quebec,” said Donovan King. “The reason it wasn’t outlawed here was because of the Catholic Church—ironically, it was the church who kept the booze flowing here.” Unsurprisingly, Montreal became a hotspot for people looking for a place to drink. This type of risky activity ultimately resulted in some scary stories. Donovan, your tour guide, has plenty of experience storytelling and acting, and knows all about Montreal’s hauntings. “I’ve been working in the haunted theatre business since the early 1990s,” said Donovan. “It’s second nature to run these types of tours.” He hopes to spread

the fearful fun of the city’s haunted inhabitants. Donovan enjoys the Red Light District specifically because of the Halloween-esque themes of the tour. The red light days of burlesque, brothels, and booze, alongside the ghostly appearances in the area make for the perfect Halwww.mtltimes.ca

loween outing. For added spookiness, these tours start after dark. Visitors and locals alike are curious to see what the story behind the Quartier des Spectacles really is: “it’s universally appealing,” said Donovan. Everyone is at least a little bit curious about the paranormal. How else are we supposed to describe the eerie, empty feelings in the pits of our stomachs, or the pipes that go bang in the night? These are common occurrences in the Red Light District theatres, bars, and hotels. Recently, Donovan personally experienced paranormal activity in Montreal— ask him about it on the tour. The Red Light District tour begins at Le Midway on Saint-Laurent, and the group departs 10 minutes before the start time of the tour. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes. Haunted Montreal hosts other guided tours around the city, but the Red Light District is the best for those looking for a good Halloween haunt. Join Donovan October 14 through 31 for a spooky evening into Montreal’s scandalous and scary red light past. English tour dates: Friday, October 14 @ 8:30 pm Saturday, October 15 @ 8:30 pm Sunday, October 16 @ 8:30 pm Friday, October 21 @ 8:30 pm Saturday, October 22 @ 8:30 pm Sunday, October 23 @ 8:30 pm Friday, October 28 @ 8:30 pm Saturday, October 29 @ 8:30 pm Sunday, October 30 @ 8:30 pm Monday, October 31@ 8:30 pm Tours in French begin at 8:00PM on the same dates.

he recent bombings in New York will not prevent me from enjoying this wonderfully diverse and vibrant city! Not one bit! There is so much to take in, that return trips are a must. Great restaurants abound from the truly garish and touristy to off-the-top elite. I might also add that Manhattan is one of the cleanest cities to walk around in - and that includes some of the neighbourhoods that were once neglected and dangerous - like Hell’s Kitchen that has become very trendy with its sidewalk terraces and flea market! The best about New York is that on every visit, I discover something new - a nook of a restaurant, an off-Broadway play that I know is going to make it big time. (That’s where I originally saw Hamilton.) Recently, I discovered a super little restaurant called Joe Allen on West 46th. It is one of those ‘oh so New York’ kitchens that is downstairs, with brick walls, small tables with candles, and a bar. So romantic but also a place with theatre history. In the 60s, young actors making their way in the city would gather their on Friday evenings, order a glass of wine and a pizza, and wait for the papers to come out with shows that were auditioning. And…you could sit there until the early hours of the morning without being expected to leave - It has also become tradition to hang pictures of all the Broadway ‘flops’ on the walls, ever since the cast of Kelly gave the owner a picture because “they felt it should hang somewhere”. www.mtltimes.ca WEDNESDAY
