375 YEARS LATER, THE STREETS OF MONTREAL 1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire
What their names tells us about Quebec’s identity By: Prashant A. Pala / mtltimes.ca
On a grey and windy September afternoon, I was wandering in the streets of Montreal, looking for a good Italian restaurant (without any help from Google maps) as I often do; I just venture into to city and see what happens next. Sometimes I discover interesting people or great places. But this time, while I was crossing a large and noisy street I could not help but noticing the name: “Avenue Christophe Colomb”. We have been taught at school who was Columbus: the great man who discovered America while searching for an alternative route to India. Hence the misleading name given to First Nations: Indians; and I kept wandering, wondering why a guy who butchered the people he encountered in the Bahamas archipelago was still remembered as a great man ? Well, one answer lies in the heart of the city, and in fact in the heart of America: it is mostly populated by people whose ancestors came from Europe, people who are mostly White
6
and are – or used to be- Christians (we find churches at every corner of the streets of Montreal). In other words, people whose ancestors were Christians colons who feared and hated what they called “savages”. In fact, the city of Montreal itself was founded by La Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, a group of religious colons whose main goal was to “civilize” and convert those savages. Montreal still remembers the name of one its members: Paul Chomedey De Maisonneuve, who gave his name to the famous Boulevard. An idea suddenly struck me: Are there any streets in Montreal named after First Nations who once counted in Montreal or Canada’s life? So back home, I did some research (this time Google was my friend). As it turns out there isn’t a single street christened in honor of First Nations’ men or women. Well, it seems that the “cultural genocide” of the First Nations have never been as thriving as today, and Montreal and Canada still keep their eyes wide shut.

Although Avigail Victoria didn’t win her first competition, she did win first place in the fitness model category at her second competition in August of 2016. She loves the healthy lifestyle. “It was a personal challenge to see how far I can push my body,” she says. “I wanted something that would be a visible testimony of my growth, and an expression of the challenges I’ve overcome in life.” The competition gave her exactly that. Preparing for a competition
8
“Competing is tough, and in my opinion, fitness is definitely one of the toughest industries to be in,” Avigail Victoria says. To prepare for a competition, she trains 5-6 times per week. She occasionally meets with her trainer Jackson Bladi. “My trainer pushes me to my fullest potential,” she says. They focus on isolating her muscles to achieve the desired definition. “Through
Jackson’s guidance, I’ve become stronger, more energetic, and have gained the confidence I need to achieve my competition goals.”
The hardest part of training for most competitors is staying dedicated to their diet. She meal preps once each week, measuring and calculating based on her goals, and considering her workout routines. About 70 percent of competing is diet, but only 30 percent strength. Proper sleep and body awareness is important as well. The key to success is balance: catering to both mind and body. “Your spirit and body have to be connected to operate in a healthy manner,” she says. Mental strength is just as important as physical strength. Avigail Victoria, however, loves the results she sees the week before a competition: “Peak week is the hardest and my favourite because you see how much your body has evolved.”

Common misunderstandings of competing
Shaun Campbell, IDFA organizer, shares a bit of insight into the world of fitness competitions. “A common misconception about fitness competitions is that they are too extreme and not healthy,” he says. Competing can be unhealthy, but all IDFA competitions are drug-free. “Competing naturally is more of a lifestyle choice and a healthy approach.”
Shaun Campbell said that balance and consistency are important to a competitor’s success. “You have to still live and enjoy your life outside of competing,” he says. “Competing is for you and your enjoyment so if you don’t enjoy it, why compete?” Avigail Victoria lives this balanced lifestyle, while maintaining a consistent approach to her training. She brings these values to her own clients.

As an IDFA competitor, Avigail Victoria trains naturally. While she is dedicated to her own training, she also prioritizes friends and family, and knows when to take a day off. “You have to know your limits,” she says. “It’s part of finding balance.”

The show is being independently produced, financed, marketed, publicized and staged by Emile Khoury and Dixit Patel, who work together at an Apple Store, who wanted to produce a show that would give up and coming comics the opportunity to perform on a larger stage in front of a sizeable crowd, and in turn, have more established comics the chance to perform in front of a diverse audience. “Originally, Dixit approached me to help him produce short videos. I told him that videos would not cut it, and that it would be better if we produced live shows,” said Khoury, who also divides his time as a freelance publicist (most recently with this year’s 35th anniversary edition of the Just For Laughs festival). “When we presented the first Haboubs & Laloos show at the Patro Le Prevost venue on Christoph-Colmb, it attracted over 350 people; when he did the second show at Vanier, we attracted just as many people.”
1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire
Khoury added that the title of the show is reflective of their goal to produce multicultural comedy shows and their respective ethnic backgrounds (Khoury is Lebanese and Patel is Hindu). “Basically, ‘Haboubs & Laloos’ is the equivalent of the word ‘brother’,” he said.
And this year’s line-up is indicative of the multicultural nature of the Montreal comedy scene. It features veteran Anglo comic David Pryde (who was one of the highlights of this year’s Montreal: An Intervention Gala at Just For Laughs); Alexandre Douville (who was named as one of the revelations of this year’s Juste pour rire festival); and headliner Adib Alkhalidey, the Moroccan-born comic who is one of the hottest comedy stars on the Quebec comedy scene, and is about to embark on his second tour across the province called “Ingenu”.
Khoury mentioned that if this third edition of “Haboubs & Laloos” is just as successful as the previous two, he and Patel hope to stage more of these multicultural comedy shows more frequently. “At first we did them every six months; if we draw a large crowd to the third edition, we hope to have them every three to four months, and if that works out, every other month,” he said.
Tickets for the third Haboubs & Laloos comedy show on September 16 cost $20 each, and can be purchased in advance by going to: https://squareup.com/store/haboubsandlaloos

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale WEDNESDAY
September 13, 2017
MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn
prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.
