Get ready for major revamp of Ste-Catherine Street By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

In case you forgot about it or put it somewhere in the dark recesses of your mind brace yourself. Just when Montrealers have had it up to their ears and down to their toes (and in every cell of their body, mind and souls) with the mess of construction going on in this fair city - the planned revamping of Ste-Catherine Street is scheduled to begin early next year. Announced in 2015, the work on the street is scheduled to begin in January 2018 and last until 2021. More than two kilometres of the street will be renovated in two phases - first between Bleury and Mansfield streets and then between Atwater and Mansfield. That will be at least three-plus years of construction armageddon.

City officials said the work is unavoidable, it cannot be delayed and they have no choice but to tear up the road in order to replace the 100 year-old water and sewage pipes running beneath it. The underground work is crucial to sewer systems and water mains, some of which date back to the 1800's. The planning began in 2013, when a sinkhole opened up at the corner of Guy and Ste-Catherine streets and a backhoe fell in - likely caused by a faulty city sewer pipe. Who can forget the images of that one? The city said if it is not done, another sinkhole could happen again.

At the same time, there are some potential bonuses to it. Mayor Coderre said it is the perfect opportunity to also revamp the sidewalks and the road. Ideas being considered include wider and heated sidewalks, one lane for cars, two lanes of parking and one for bicycles. The speed limit would be lowered to 30kph - but a minimum of 60 parking spots would disappear between Aylmer and Mansfield. The street would also have seating areas with free Wi-Fi, 'intelligent' lighting and charging stations for electric vehicles. In 2015, the estimated cost for the repairs was $95 million - just for the first phase. The second phase will start in 2019 and finish in 2021 - no cost estimate was given. We shall see how that goes. And let's not forget about the nearly $4 million for a project Coderre was planning to spend on installing large, tunnel-like inflatable structures in order to hide the construction work for the planned four-year overhauling of the street. I wonder what Sainte-Catherine herself would have said about all this? How do you feel about all the work to be done? Do you think any of it could wait, given all the other work being done! Please let us know!

DJ Fafa Khan

Positive vibes and hard work pays off for Montreal DJ By: Jill Clark / mtltimes.ca

Fafa Khan’s first chance to DJ fell into her lap, but she ran with the opportunity in the years since. Even though becoming a DJ wasn’t in her original plans, the resulting success makes sense. Fafa grew up surrounded by the arts. She

studied fine, visual, and graphic arts, as well as art history. Throughout school, she danced and taught hip hop, which allowed her to simultaneously learn about the music industry. She has always worked hard to be well-rounded.

New woman on the scene

When Fafa was eighteen, a friend and restaurant owner asked her to casually DJ for him on Saturday evenings. The only equipment he had was a laptop and an iPod set up behind the bar, but it worked. “I just chose songs,” Fafa said. “It ended up being one of the craziest nights! There was a lineup around the block to get in.” From this first opportunity, Fafa dove into the industry. When promoters approached her to DJ at clubs, she took the chance to learn. “That’s when I learned how to DJ on real equipment,” she said. “I just kept practicing.” Within a year, fans could find www.mtltimes.ca

Fafa at clubs and parties across Montreal spinning hip hop, R&B, reggae, and trap. Despite being unexpectedly given her first opportunity, Fafa worked every day since to build her reputation as a DJ. She remembers when she approached Buonanotte, asking to open for their DJs. Eventually, she earned herself a spot as the Friday night resident DJ. “All the clubs started talking about the new female DJ on the scene,” she said. When she earns residency, she holds onto those spots for years, and keeps her crowds dancing all night. From the numbers alone, it’s easy to see that Montreal loves to dance with DJ Fafa Khan.

DJ Fafa Kahn at Osheaga’s afterparty

DJ Fafa Khan has played sets around the world, but the 2017 Osheaga afterparty is a recent success that she is especially proud of. “I was so nervous about it because all of the VIPs, artists, and important DJs in the scene were there,” she said.

This crowd was harder to please than her usual following—they were artists themselves, or listen to music regularly. Some may have heard of Fafa, but never heard her play. It was another chance to prove herself as an artist, instead of just a club DJ.

Despite being in the music industry since she was eighteen and jumping into DJing fulltime, Fafa has been forced to prove herself time and again. “To this day I still have to prove myself,” she said. “People judge me just on my appearance, and are completely surprised when I start playing.” Every time she plays, she shows others in the industry that she books gigs because she works for them.

Beats by DJ Fafa Khan

The next challenge for Fafa Khan is to produce original music. “As a DJ, to get to the next level as an artist, you have to start producing,” she said. “People have to see what comes out of you authentically in terms of sound.”

As an artist with experience in visual arts, dance, and music, she values well-roundedness. “As an artist, you want to do several things at one time. I love tapping into everything.” Musically, the goal is to create authentic music that represents her real sounds. She hopes to be able to tour with musicians, and producing original beats for them. Fafa takes advantage her slower fall and winter months to focus on her own production. Through the summer she plays five or six nights a week, but only three or four in the winter.

www.mtltimes.ca

“I have been naturally producing hip hop and trap beats from scratch,” Fafa said. Fafa plans to release new music this fall season. “I think the vibe of the music I’m making is darker and aligns with the changing season. I think it’s an appropriate time for people to hear it,” she said. “People have to be in the zone, in the mood, in the season. I wait for the right moment to share my work.”

Although Fafa didn’t plan on becoming a DJ, she’s thankful for every opportunity she receives or creates for herself. “By keeping a positive attitude and loving music, it fell into my lap,” she said. “That was the best gift I could ever get.” Find DJ Fafa Khan in Montreal

Toronto to Montreal - Hyperloop Train Finalists! By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

www.mtltimes.ca

Would you like to get from Montreal to Toronto in 39 minutes, in a futuristic vehicle propelling you through a low-pressure tube at up to 1080 kilometers per hour? Well, that soon may very well be possible. Toronto and Montreal are finalists in Hyperloop One's global competition to build the first 'hyperloop high-speed transportation system'. The Toronto to Montreal route is one of their top choices. The two cities are major contenders where the company would build one of their first routes in the world. WEDNESDAY

The proposed route would connect Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto and would travel 2-3 times faster than high-speed rail and magnetic levitation trains and 10-15 times faster than traditional rail. Hyperloop is a new mode of transportation that moves freight and people quickly, safely, on-demand and direct from origin to destination. Passengers or cargo are loaded into the Hyperloop vehicle and accelerate gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The vehicle quickly lifts above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag. Hyperloop systems will be built on columns or tunneled below ground to avoid dangerous grade crossings and wildlife. It’s fully autonomous and enclosed, eliminating pilot error and weather hazards and will glide along silently with no turbulence. It’s safe and clean, with no di-

rect carbon emissions. Hyperloop One will now be working with each winning team and conducting further analysis on their proposals. The company is aiming to meet their goal of having three systems in service by 2021. There are nine other global candidates with the following routes: USA Chicago to Columbus to Pittsburgh Dallas to Laredo to Houston Cheyenne to Denver to Pueblo Miami to Orlando INDIA Bengaluru to Chennai Mumbai to Chennai UK Edinburgh to London Glasgow to Liverpool MEXICO Mexico City to Guadalajara

The City has 19 very well-maintained parks and its horticultural employees have shown their skills in the creation of 10 topiaries spread across the city.” For his part, the Mayor of the City, Edgar Rouleau, had nothing but positive things to say about his teams: “This project, realized in collaboration with Dorval Main Streets, was a resounding success thanks to the work and passion of our Public Works employees. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale WEDNESDAY

September 20, 2017

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.
