Anglo Ex-Quebecers asked to return By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

www.mtltimes.ca

At Quebec's Liberal Party youth wing convention last August, Premier Philippe Couillard reached out to English-speaking Ex-Quebecers, those who fled the province since the 'Quiet Revolution' and its subsequent upheavals. Over the years, especially with Bill 101 - the Trans Canada Hwy 401 West slowly became an 'Anglo In Exile' route. And now Couillard

has a dream, he wants them to come back.

Since the 1970's, an estimated 500,000 Anglophones fled Quebec to other provinces, especially to Toronto, Ontario. Many also fled south to the US, all leaving behind family and friends, all taking their hopes and dreams - and their businesses with them.

Uber calling it quits in Quebec!

COVER

1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire

By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

Uber, the app-based ridesharing service, started operating in Montreal in October 2014, creating tension between them and the Taxi Industry right from the start - with several court battles and injunctions taking place over the years. After their allotted one year pilot project recently ended, they were granted a renewal, but with much stricter rules, of which they were not too pleased about - even threatening to leave the province. Radio-Canada has now confirmed Uber will cease operations in the province and the director general of Uber Quebec, is expected to make the announcement at a news conference today (September 26th) in Montreal. Last Friday, Transport Minister Laurent Lessard agreed to renew the pilot project, much to the chagrin of Taxi drivers who have held many protests in Montreal, angrily denouncing the service. But the stricter conditions introduced by the Minister on Uber have proved too much for the company, who stated it would 'significantly threaten their ability to continue operating here' - and now

www.mtltimes.ca

they are ready to call it quits. The new regulations stipulate drivers must undergo the same 35 hours of training that licensed Taxi drivers have to, instead of the 15 hours previously required in the first pilot project. And Uber drivers would now need criminal background checks done by police, instead of the private companies they were using. It's not the first blow Uber has received. Just last Friday in London, England, Uber had its license to operate removed, after facing harsh criticism from unions, lawyers and cab drivers.

Uber has its many fans, mainly due to the lower cost of using the service, but there has been problems from the start, including incidents involving the behavior of some drivers - and more recently a man who posed as an Uber driver in Toronto, sexually assaulted a woman. Have you used Uber's services? Do you think the new regulations are too harsh? Should Uber stay?

Equifax Breach

- You may be a victim of identity theft By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

On September 7th, Equifax, one of the oldest and largest consumer credit reporting companies, announced it had been the victim of a massive cyberattack, which took place in mid-May of this year. They claim the breach was only discovered at the end of July - but why it was only publicly disclosed over a month later is unknown.

They have since confirmed that very sensitive information of approximately 100,000 Canadians were 'exposed' in the attack and who now have to worry about identity theft. Although the numbers are but a drop in the bucket compared to the 143 million Americans and an estimated 400,000 up to

www.mtltimes.ca

44 million British whose information may have also been breached, Canadians still have serious cause for concern.

The Canadian breach may have impacted names, addresses and social insurance numbers, PIN numbers and possibly even credit card numbers, along with other personal information. As well, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) has been notifying approximately 10,000 of their members who participate in their identity protection program, it is possible some of their sensitive data may have been compromised - as it was stored with Equifax USA.

TECHNOLOGY

September 27, 2017

What is even more worrisome is that Equifax has not been completely forthcoming in this whole fiasco and there has been widespread criticism about their actions. In fact, these attacks could have started as early as this past spring. Bloomberg News reported that Equifax had been the victim of a 'major breach of its computer systems' in March 2017 and had only notified a small number of 'outsiders and banking customers' about it - and the same party who carried it out, may very well be the same who breached their systems again in May. Also disconcerting in the report, is that 'three Equifax executives sold $1.8 million of their personal holdings of company shares, days after Equifax discovered the breach'. The company claims the executives, including the chief financial officer John Gamble, 'had no knowledge that an intrusion had occurred at the time they sold their shares'. In the meantime, it was also reported that the US Justice Department had opened an investigation to determine whether or not insider trading laws had been violated. The company is also facing investigations in Canada and class actions suits have been filed here and in the US. To further shake your trust in how it is being handled, when the announcement was made Equifax first put up a link to a website for those who wanted to find out if they were victims of the breach. Security experts found that the website had many traits in common with a

14

phishing website. For one, it was not hosted on a domain registered to Equifax and those who went to the site to learn if their personal information had been compromised needed to provide a last name and six digits of their social security number - and security experts concluded the information returned from the search was apparently just random results, not accurate information. The cyberattack on Equifax could end up proving to be the worst ever seen, because of the amount of extremely sensitive data now in the hands of criminal hackers - which should only be used by banks, insurance companies and other businesses to confirm information on their clients and consumers. Much has not yet been made clear, but waiting to find out if you have or can become a victim of identity theft could prove to make things far more challenging. If you ever had to replace a lost driver's license or medicare card, you understand what a daunting task it could be - never mind having to replace stolen credit cards and social insurance numbers as well. In the meantime, it is highly suggested to monitor your credit cards and bank accounts for unauthorized transactions, report any signs of theft or crime to local police - and to immediately let your bank and credit card companies know if you have reason to think you have been a victim of identity theft. Are you worried about the breach? Will you take any immediate action?

Crescent Street – Tribute to Leonard Cohen

By: Elsa-Maret / mtltimes.ca

Leonard Cohen Tribute – Leonard Cohen was an internationally acclaimed artist born and raised in Montreal. He spent his life dedicating it to the arts: he sang, wrote poetry and novels and painted. Not only was he a creator, he explored themes and raised questions about religion, isolation, politics, relationships and sexuality 16

through all of his art. His blended folk music with a sexual edge attracted fans from all around the world as well as fellow musicians. His musical hit “Hallelujah” was incredibly popular in the 80s and even today. Cohen was an artist who kept on creating and released a new album only a month before he passed away.

Chiang Rai - A gem in Nothern Thailand By: Frida Velade/ mtltimes.ca

Chiang Rai is located in Northern Thailand; a small city with diversified attractions, historical, rich geography, cultural legacy and amazing gastronomy. Mostly mountainous, it reaches the seventh longest river in Asia (4,000 Km long), the Mekong River to the north and borders on both Myanmar (ex Burma) and Laos which constitutes a tourism gateway for these countries. Before reaching the Golden Triangle, we passed by Mae Sai, the energetic trading town border of Thailand and Myanmar. Then crossed the Sai River and walked into Thachilek on the Burmese side. Here, we visited the Shwe Dagon Pagoda on a hillside from where you have a spectacular

view of the Burmese hills. We took a rickshaw to explore the town and temples, ride through small side streets and ended into a local market. We continued to the Golden Triangle Viewpoint, a unique experience to see the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos. Then, took a boat trip to view the splendor of the mighty Mekong River and see closer the borders of these countries. In the past, this vast land was used to grow and traffic opium among the three countries and the deal was in gold or precious stones. Nowadays, Thailand has substituted opium for cold-climate fruit, vegetable, cut flowers and even coffee harvest.

EXPERIENCING A PEACEFUL AND LUXURIOUS RESORT

I stayed in this beautiful and peaceful resort: Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort with chic design which encompasses traditional Lanna architecture and warm Thai hospitality. Specifically designed for the well-travelled, it is situated on the banks of the Kok River, close to the centre of Chiang Rai town and airport and one hour drive from the Golden Triangle.

What I appreciated in this hotel was its natural beauty, top services, comfort rooms, food, and its hospitality. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious almost like a suite, with modern decorations and placed around a lovely garden with an artificial lagoon. The swimming pool is special as it is strategically placed next to the river with a great view. The pool has different levels very convenient for families with smaller children who could also enjoy the pool time without any worries.

The food is excellent and my favourite was breakfast time: It is an interactive buffet with lots of choices, using international and local authentic ingredients from around the world.

www.mtltimes.ca

The chef changed the menu often. As a tourist, I had stomach problems and the chef prepared a special dish based on yogurt to alleviate my symptoms. I also went to the Italian Restaurant “Favola” which overlooks the river and outside terrace. The restaurant offers the passion and culinary traditions of rustic, tasty authentic Italian cuisine. The foccachia bread served with all dishes was amazing; the pizza I ordered was crispy and well seasoned and baked in a real pizza oven. I highly recommend this 5 star hotel which responds to most criteria that a traveller look for when going abroad.

The original production which established itself as one of the West End’s most popular shows when it opened in 2012, and which recently celebrated its 1,000th performance, showcased the music of The Beatles from their humble beginnings in Liverpool’s Cavern Club, through the pinnacle of Beatlemania, to their later studio masterpieces.

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale WEDNESDAY

September 27, 2017

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.
