Texting while driving is killing people By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

Perhaps it is time for those who text while driving (or hold cellphones for a call) to receive the same penalties as driving under the influence of alcohol. It has become clear that simply receiving a fine and demerit points is not enough. Society's obsession with their 'smart' phones is changing the way we live and think - and not necessarily in a responsible way. In fact, addiction to the virtual world and it's 'need to know everything now and faster' is killing people, literally. Texting while driving, or for that matter even pedestrians crossing a road, has become a very serious problem. No matter how often they are told, logic simply disappears for some people when their cellphones go 'ding'. It is a complete illusion to think one is fully aware of their surroundings when looking at their phones, either behind the wheel of a 3000 pound-plus vehicle or with head bent while crossing a busy intersection. It takes mere seconds for

www.mtltimes.ca

a serious accident to happen. It is irresponsible and soon might be criminal - with Bill C-373 recently introduced in the House of Commons by Manitoba MP Doug Eyolfson. In an interview with CTV News, he said 'distracted driving is a big problem nationwide that has come up relatively quickly', and he 'wants governments across the country to make the enforcement of distracted driving more consistent between all the provinces and territories'. The bill, 'A Federal Framework on Distracted Driving Act', was introduced on October 18th and passed a vote on October 25th. The next step will be up to the Senate. As it now stands, all provinces and territories (except Nunavut) penalize distracted drivers from three to five demerit points and fines for distracted driving across Canada range from a minimum of $80 in Quebec, to a maximum of $1,200 in Prince Edward Island.

"Right now, a person is more likely to be a victim of distracted driving than a victim of impaired driving," he was quoted as saying. 'Leave the Phone Alone', an awareness campaign encouraging Canadians to 'make a public pledge to avoid distractions while driving', states on their website: - Drivers who use hand-held devices are FOUR times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to cause injury. - Even when drivers use a hands-free phone, they are less aware of the traffic around them. They tend to react more slowly to a critical event or worse - they may not detect the danger at all. - Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. A study found that in 80% of collisions, the driver had looked away from the road 3 seconds prior to the crash. As a driver with 40 years of experience, I am proud to say I am not guilty of texting while driving - I realized how dangerous it was from the start. It was simple logic. I do talk on the phone using hands-free technology but often try to pull over if possible, as I find the act of focusing on a conversation takes away from focusing on the road. As a

pedestrian, I have been guilty of texting while walking - but that ended the first time I walked face first into a pole. It's not an inconvenience when my life or that of others is at stake. Just recently I was almost in a serious car accident. A woman in her 40’s, not a young driver as we often assume, was texting while driving and hit the back of another car. I was just behind her and my reactions, thankfully, we’re good enough to avoid her and a potential pile up behind me, of which my maneuver helped stop. Fortunately, the drivers and passengers were okay, but both cars sustained serious enough damage. There does not seem to be a way to really get the message through. Texting on cellphones while driving, as well as while walking and cycling for that matter, can kill. Period. So what will it take? A debilitating accident or further deaths to make people come to their senses? It is unfortunate simple logic does not prevail. Perhaps the threat of losing your license or jail time will. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn 18

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Energizen and NOVA have done it again!

www.mtltimes.ca

On October 21st, Energizen and NOVA West Island joined hands for the 7th time at the “Yoga for NOVA” Charity Event in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. What a great way to start the day! For only $15, people had a one-hour yoga session, a light snack and door prizes graciously donated by local community partners. The generosity of 35 participants, donors and sponsors allows us to offer more compassionate and professional in-home nursing care for our clients living with cancer or ALS. Special thanks to the Municipality of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Parish, Marché Richelieu Richard & Fils, Magnolia Reflexology & Massage and Nathalie Beaux for their support. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without Cynthia Maher who, once again, touched the lives of so many people by offering her time and expertise as a yoga instructor. Together, we have brightened our clients’ lives and warmed their hearts with over 95 additional nursing visits since 2014. Santino’s Story - November 1st National Acromegaly Awareness Day Santino Matrundola taking a selfie at work

By: Jill Clark / mtltimes.ca

This November 1st will be the first ever National Acromegaly Awareness Day. But what is acromegaly? Usually, acromegaly develops from an excess growth hormone. In some, it’s signalled by an enlargement in the hands and feet. In others, it’s invisible— aside from the adverse and life-altering side effects including extreme fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, and vision problems. Santino Matrundola, owner and photographer of Fusion Photography, experienced the invisible later effects of the disease. In March 2014, Santino visited the doctor with extreme daily migraines. He was sent away with antibiotics to treat a sinus infection. However, he knew it

www.mtltimes.ca

wasn’t a sinus infection when he momentarily lost vision in one eye while photographing an event a few weeks later. He went through emergency surgery to remove an invasive tumour in his pituitary gland. It was the culprit of his headaches and vision loss, pressing on nearby brain tissue. Santino was diagnosed with acromegaly. As one of the constants throughout his struggle, his photography motivates him to find the positivity in his chaos. “Photography helps me on a daily basis,” he says. His photography business brings him even more joy than before. Now he uses photography to change the way others see themselves, as well as the way he sees himself.

Raising awareness about Acromegaly

Living with this life-changing diagnosis, enduring two surgeries, and attending countless doctor appointments have inspired Santino’s mission to raise awareness for his invisible disease. “Anyone I speak to who doesn’t know me has no idea what it is,” he says. “I didn’t know either when my doctor first told me.” Alongside public awareness, Santino hopes to spread positivity among others coping with similar situations. “I ended up dealing with it in a positive way,” he says. “I chose to find something in the chaos and make it positive to keep pushing through.” Santino started doing his 30-second dance parties at times when he feels the struggle the most—before surgeries and other stressful appointments. This coping mechanism offers an uplifting moment of control when his health lies in hands other than his own. 22

When faced with any challenge, a support system is key to coping, whether that support is from a community of others struggling with the same disease, or family. “I think having a supportive family has helped me stay positive. On my toughest days, it’s my family that keeps me going,” he says. For example, his father attended every single doctor appointment in the first year after Santino’s diagnoses. Professionally, his photography community is ready to lend a hand. Santino also found a community of others diagnosed with acromegaly, and recently shared his story at their 2017 Canadian Acromegaly Conference in Vancouver. Santino turns to social media to encourage others struggling to find a similar support system. His 30-second dance parties caught on—he’s received feedback from others saying they dance it out now too. “It cheers them up. It’s not just about the disease itself, but coping mechanisms.”

Santino recognizes the silver lining of his disease in more than just his dance parties. “I’m not grateful that I have this disease, but I am grateful for what it has taught me. It’s brought me to another level of living,” he says. “I’ve met incredible people on my journey, and it’s helped me grow into the person that I am.” In the end, his experience with Acromegaly has turned into a positive experience. “I can’t believe that something so negative brought me to a place that’s so positive.” On top of continuing to successfully run his photography business, Santino recently took on the responsibility of joining the official Acromegaly Ambassador Initiative. At the Acromegaly Conference in September, he and five others were asked to lead the awareness movement in Canada. Stay tuned as their awareness ideas come to life before next year’s National Acromegaly Awareness Day.
