Did they do the right thing? By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

A 70-year-old man was rushed to a hospital in Florida. He was unconscious, had an elevated blood-alcohol level and generally in bad shape. Doctors had to move quickly in order to try and save his life, but when they opened his shirt they stopped in their tracks. The words 'Do Not Resuscitate' were tattooed on his chest.

somehow found a copy of the man's Florida Department of Health DNR order, which validated the inkedrequest on his chest. A 'Do Not Resuscitate' order was issued and the man, who had a history of serious health problems, was not treated and soon died. Laws about 'Do Not Resuscitate' orders could be very complex and bring up many ethical questions. In this case, a tattoo alerted the doctors to the possibility of a DNR order, but how could they have been certain? A tattoo alone is not legally binding. Doctors are morally and legally obligated to respect the wishes of their patients, but if they are unable to confirm their wishes it can put them in a very precarious position.

According to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine that addressed this particular incident, the man had no identification on him and no family members were there - so they found themselves facing a serious dilemma. At first they decided to ignore the tattoo as there was no way to confirm if it was what the man really wanted. They were prepared to treat him with antibiotics and other life-saving measures, but when they called in the hospital's ethics consultant, Do you think a DNR order tattooed on a person's body they were advised to honor the tattooed message. should be unquestioningly followed? Would you go to Soon after, the hospital's social work department the same lengths to assure your wishes are granted? www.mtltimes.ca

SQ takes upper advantage By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

In a recent crackdown on drivers who text while behind the wheel of a car, the Sûreté du Québec and the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, teamed up to catch offenders in a most unexpected way. According to a Global News report on November 29th, SQ police and agents from the SAAQ, drove up and down Hwy 15 in Laval in a big, unmarked white bus, giving them a strategic advantage from above to spot people below who were texting and driving. When spotting offenders, they radioed other officers in patrol cars within proximity, who then pulled them over and handed them $127 tickets with four demerit points. In just that day, thirty-two tickets were issued. “If you look down for four to six seconds while you’re driving, you just crossed a football field with your eyes closed,” Control Routier spokesperson MarieJosee Michaud was quoted as saying. “Distraction while driving causes half the accidents in Quebec. We are

4

there to verify that everyone respects the law, and it’s really to save lives.” Recent studies show that drivers who text while driving or even just hold their phone to talk, are FOUR times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to cause injury. They tend to react more slowly to a critical event or worse - they may not detect the danger at all. The big, white bus operation confirmed there are still plenty of drivers on the road who blatantly ignore the warnings, putting themselves and others at serious risk. The Federal government is set to enact Bill C-373 'A Federal Framework on Distracted Driving Act', which will not only increase the fines, but make driving while texting a criminal offence - while the Quebec government is planning to increase the fine for distracted driving to at least $300. As for the drivers who were caught that day, it was an 'unexpected' opportunity for them to smarten up before it's too late.

Bonjour - Hi By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

Quebec is once again making international headlines. It's the same issue that has become somewhat of a blight on the province and a conundrum on the language landscape - from the 'Pastagate' fiasco in 2013 to the recent Parti Québécois motion in the National Assembly calling on businesses, especially retailers, to no longer use the 'Bonjour-Hi' greeting to welcome regular customers and tourists. The reasoning behind the motion is that only saying 'Bonjour' will help to further protect the French language. The French language is the foundation of Quebec's unique and rich heritage, but globalization is changing everything. The younger generation doesn't see border lines anymore, www.mtltimes.ca

they see opportunity. Languages and different cultures are merging, creating new ways of thinking and living together on this planet. It's hard to accept and yes, sad to see these changes happen so rapidly - especially when it is the very fabric of one's identity. Anglophone, Allophone or Francophone in this province, the French language and culture is part of who we are and what makes us unique - whether consciously perceived or not. Then why does it appear as if the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in Quebec's National Assembly? In just the past few months, Quebec has gone from reaching out to the Anglo community with open arms, to folding those arms back in with a grunt.

Québec National Assembly 1201 Guy Street, Montreal 3300 Sources Blvd., Pointe-Claire

Last August Premier Couillard reached out to English-speaking Ex-Quebecers, those who fled the province since the 'Quiet Revolution', with a passionate plea for their return, 'We need you for a better future for all Quebecers… this is the moment to come back and build Quebec, the new Quebec with us', he said. It received a lukewarm welcome, but then on October 11th Couillard took it a step further, appointing longtime cabinet minister Kathleen Weil as the first minister responsible for English-speaking Quebecers in the party's history. It was followed on November 24th with the appointment of William Floch as the new 'Secretariat for the English-speaking community'.

tween English and French Quebec." The word 'irritant' was dropped from the motion but then the inexplicable happened. The National Assembly passed the motion unanimously - the Liberal party included. Even Premier Couillard and Minister Kathleen Weil voted for the motion. There might actually be some merit to a unilingual 'Bonjour' greeting, but whatever were they thinking after stretching out an olive branch to Anglos?

In one quick 'motion', they succeeded in alienating the English community once again. The motion itself is not a law and there will be no penalties if employees and retail staff ignore it and continue to It was a first for Quebec and one the community greet people with 'Bonjour-Hi'. welcomed, albeit cautiously given the province's history with the language issue. It's on Premier Couillard to say that the English word a shame. Creating discord between the 'two-soli('Hi') was 'un irritant', Couillard dismissed it as tudes' was completely unnecessary, especially when nonsense and then said, "What he is trying to do the gap was slowly closing on its own - and in a harhere is create an artificial crisis, a confrontation be- monious way. www.mtltimes.ca WEDNESDAY

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.
