their regular suppliers. For those who use electricity, their bills are soaring. Some people have seen their monthly costs soar close to 40% and others even higher. It gets to a point where people are unable to afford it and are worried about their electricity being cut off but thanks to a provincial law, instead of putting less food on the table in order to pay the bill, HydroQuébec is not allowed to shut off power because of non-payment from the 1st of December to the end of March. And thanks to Sun Youth, who have advocated for those faced with this dilemma, they can negotiate a payment agreement with Hydro-Québec or have access to services designed to improve the

energy efficiency of a residence through the 'Éconologis' program. For those who heat with oil, higher costs are not the only problem, as many oil companies have been unable to keep up with the unusually high demand. It is in part due to record-breaking temperatures with tanks emptying much earlier in the season, as well as delivery trucks struggling to get around the city because of the fallout from snow and ice storms - but there has been a high volume of complaints from customers who have not been able to get through to their suppliers or who have been promised a delivery within 24 hours, only to find themselves with no oil and having no heat at all during the dangerously frigid days and waiting up to a week (and some even longer) for a truck to appear at their homes. It is somewhat understandable for the smaller, independent oil companies to be struggling, but there has been an outcry from customers of major suppliers, especially those with Ultramar, who have been struggling just to get through to them on the phone and then often being promised immediate delivery - only to find themselves shivering for days on end. In some cases, people had to leave their homes or even close businesses. Although representatives of the company have cited many reasons for the delays, some being legit, there is clearly a customer service and management problem needing to be urgently ad-

dressed. Sun Youth may be able to help in some instances, with free heating oil for those who are simply unable to pay for it. They have a program, made possible in part thanks to the renewed collaboration of retailer members of l'Association des distributeurs d'énergie du Québec (ADEQ), which allows the organization to provide free heating oil to families in need once again this year. With the support of their partners in the oil industry, they have been able to provide heating oil to families with little or no financial means in emergency situations. In the last 24 years, close to 325,000 litres of heating oil have been delivered to these families. To have access to the

program, you can call Sun Youth directly. They will first evaluate your situation to make sure you are in need and that your financial means qualifies. If so, they will contact one of their partners who will then go to your place and fill up half a tank - at no cost. Sun Youth relies on donations. People wishing to contribute to the financing of their programs are invited to take part in Sun Youth's Valentine's Day

fundraising dinner, held once again at the Robin des Bois restaurant on Thursday, February 15th 2018, starting at 6:00pm. To create a warm and pleasant atmosphere for the evening there will be live music performed by the Cadillac Music Band and door prizes to win. On the menu, a succulent meal which includes a delicious soup, a choice of a main dish, glass of wine and surprises. The tickets are on sale now for $50.

To buy your tickets, please email them at: communications@sunyouthorg.com Meanwhile, people who have difficulty with their heating costs could contact Sun Youth at (514) 842-6822 for more information or to make an appointment for an evaluation. Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. century of Laurentian Lanes Bowling Centers being in business. Since

1959, they have been the proven choice for bowling (recreational or competitive) in Montreal. Over the years all of their centers, which include the Ottawa and Kingston locations, have been modernized, offering digital or computer scoring and more. Located on Montée de Liesse, Laurentian Lanes, the first center in the chain, has weathered the test of time and remains modern and up-to-date. When it was originally built, it was a 48-lane duckpin facility, but in the mid-'60's they converted it to 10-pin bowling and expanded the facility from 48 lanes to 66. Then dur-

ing the summer of 2017, renovations took place and 8 of the lanes were converted back to duckpin. And now they are inviting the public to check out the new lanes and their brand new scoring system and decor with an 'open house' next week - offering you the chance to test your skills or simply have fun and knock some pins down for only $2 a game. Their reputation as a premiere bowling center for the public and leagues was made by keeping the condition of their lanes, service and equipment well-maintained - and by hosting numerous, prestigious tournaments and

television shows including: • L’Omnium de Quilles Canadian Tire (RDS) • Three Star Bowling (CBC) • L’Heure des Quilles (SRC) • Canadian Bowling Classic (CBC) • Pin Busters (CFCF) • Kings & Queens (CFCF) • Super Quilles (TVSQ) • PBA Canadian Open • CTF Team Canada Qualifications Laurentian Lanes is easy to get to and there are plenty of parking spaces. Once inside you will find: 58 Tenpin (Large Ball) Lanes, 8 Duckpin (small ball) Lanes, Synthetic Lanes & Approach and Touch Screen Digital

Scoring - a far cry from decades ago when score keeping was done with a pencil and scoresheet! In addition, they offer Bumper Bowling (guaranteed scoring) for kids, Theme Bowling featuring popular 'Angry Birds' and Cosmos Bowling, which combines black lights and music for exciting Saturday night games. Other fun filled activities include: Billiards and Arcade games. A great Menu selection is available at the Lester’s’ Deli including their famous Montreal smoked meat. For a little postgame relaxation or to watch your favorite sporting event, you can sit back and choose from a

wide selection of beverages at the Bar 300 lounge. La Source des Quilles, a specialized boutique, is on site with bowling accessories, balls, bags and more. To sum it up, Laurentian Lanes is a perfect score anytime… and if you know anything about bowling, it does not get better than that! The open house takes place January 22nd to the 25th from 9:00am to 9:00pm at 222 Montée de Liesse. You can visit their website at: www.laurentianlanes.com for more information.

nfinitheatre’s next production “Conversion” promises to dish up a great deal of hot topics such as prejudice, inadequacy, status and family; it will be presented from February 6 to 25 at Montreal’s newest theatrical space, the Espace Knox, located at 6215 Godfrey Avenue in NDG. Written by Alyson Grant and directed by Infinitheatre’s Artistic Director Guy Sprung, “Conversion” tells the story of four family members in which two of them, a racially mixed couple named Abi and Ali, host a dinner party. What’s supposed to be a joyous, celebratory family dinner is tainted by the Abi’s mother constantly spewing out polarizing, vitriolic comments dealing with bigotry and religious intolerance. During the show’s run, there will be two separate moderated talkback sessions (on February 15 and 22) dealing with the issues that are portrayed in “Conversion”. These sessions will include the play’s cast, director and playwright, along with Rabbi Reuben J. Poupko and human rights activist Ehab Lotayef. Ticket prices range from $23 to $30, with “Pay What You Decide” for the Sunday matinees that start at 2 p.m.The Tuesday and Friday performances will be conducted with French subtitles. Get rid of your headache Sponsored

I

t is estimated that between 40 and 50 millions Americans suffer from chronic headaches. Headaches are believed to be the result of an electrical and chemical imbalance at centers in the brain that regulate blood vessels around the head and neck. Headaches may be caused by wide variety of factors including stress, reaction to certain foods, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, noise, muscle tension. What are the different types of headaches? Tension headaches are the most common and are typically caused by muscle contraction in the head and neck, lasting between five to six hours. Tension headache is characterized by dull, steady pain that feels like a band tightening around your head. Usually this type of headaches occurs with the people who work in the offices behind the computers. Vascular headaches wich include cluster and migraine headaches, are the result of overactive blood vessels. A migraine can last between 12 and 24

• January 20, 2018

hours and is often accompanied by nausea and other symptoms. Cluster headache, typically affected men, following by throbbing pain one red, watery eye, and nasal congestion. A sinus headache is characterized by congestion and steady pain behind your face that worsens if you bend forward. How to cure your headache? From my own experience, most of the patients suffer from tension headache. This type of headache is very easy to treat. A proper osteopathic or massage therapy treatment can get rid of your pain. For the migraines, herbal products and laser therapy were to be very effective. Hypnosis has been shown to work as a treatment for chronic pain. It is similar to relaxation therapy, but it also allows a therapist to access subconscious part of the mind, wich may reveal emotional traumas or underlying psychological causes of stress. Homeopathic remedies are available to treat spe-

cific types of headaches, but are best prescribed by a homeopathic practitioner, since ideally each remedy is tailored to an individual’s unique characteristics. Acupressure and moxa therapy also work great for removing your pain. One more very important factor that I want to mention about our kids suffers from headaches. Poor performents at school, mood changes or any kind of disturbances that some times they can’t even explain can be due to headaches. Poor vision, stress, poor posture can develop a headache. It is extremely important to take care and properly diagnose the cause before other symptoms start to occur. My direst clients I wish you well.Take care of your health. Quebec VS Ontario minimum wage - How it stacks up

A

nother election year and another round of timely political announcements coming forth from the provincial assembly doors of government - particularly those of Quebec and Ontario.

And neither will the 75 cents per hour actually make any significant difference to most employees as it really does not keep up with the rising cost of living. The plan to bring the minimum wage to 50% of the average wage by 2020 might not be the silver lining they are hoping for. According to Statistics Canada, as of last December the average hourly wage in Quebec was $25.28 - which at 50% would presently make the minimum wage only $12.64. How much

S-092317-26

Quebec on the other hand was a little slower out of the gates, announcing a minimum wage increase of only 75 cents per hour (or 6.5%) bringing it from $11.25 per hour to $12.00 - but it only goes into effect on May 1st of this year. It was announced earlier than expected and touted as the 'biggest increase in the province's history' and that the increase is part of their plan to raise the minimum wage to the equivalent of 50% of the average wage in Quebec by 2020. In comparison to Ontario's hike, Quebec appears to be lagging far - even behind AlBy Bonnie Wurst behind berta whose minimum hourly wage is currently mtltimes.ca at $13.60 and will rise to Ontario was out of the $15 by 2019. After Quegates first, passing their bec's increase kicks in on labour reform legislation May 1st, the province will on November 22nd 2017, have the third-highest which included increasing minimum wage in Canada the minimum wage to $15 - but that will not last per hour, up from the pre- long. The minimum wage vious rate of $11.60. It in the Northwest Territowill be phased in, with the ries is already $12.50 per first increase to $14 per hour and will rise to hour already in effect as $13.46 on April 18th 2018 of January 1st 2018 and and in Nunavut the minirising to $15 on January mum wage is presently at 1st 2019 - a $3.40 per $13 per hour. Quebec's approach hour (or 21%) increase. simply does not stack up.

can that possibly rise by 2020, now less than two years away? To even align with Ontario's $15 per hour minimum, the average wage in Quebec would have to rise to approximately $30 per hour - an over 20% increase. If realistic, it would certainly be welcome. Quebec's Labour Minister, Dominique Vien, said in a statement, "The good economic performance of Quebec allows us to substantially increase the minimum wage. This increase will improve the quality of life for low income workers, as well as provide stronger incentives to work, increase net disposable income and contribute to reducing the incidence of poverty, without harming jobs or the competitiveness of our businesses." According to the province, the increase will directly benefit over 352,000 minimum wage workers, with at least 60% being women. How much it will actually benefit them is a matter of interpretation. In reality, the average minimum increase in a household (depending on the number of people and the hours worked) will be between $462 and

$979 annually. It will allow for some breathing room; perhaps a little more food on the table for the year or some new clothes and other household needs. Maybe even a little indulgence such as a weekend away. Yet there are also other elements to consider as for how Quebec really stacks up, such as; Vacation Time Entitlement, Minimum Wage for Workers Who Make Tips, Personal or Medical Leave and even pay scales for work like Berry Pickers. You can find more details at the Retail Council of

Canada's website at: https://www.retailcouncil.org/quickfacts/minimum-wage-by-province or with the Commission des normes, de l'équité de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) at: https://www.cnt.gouv.qc.c a / e n / l e ave s - a n d - a b sences/vacation/index.ht ml Minimum wage increases have been received well-enough by labour advocates and are usually popular in the polls with the public, but for businesses who will be paying the price (those who are unable to transfer the increases to their customers) many are voicing their discontent, saying it is too fast and will inevitably lead to the loss of jobs - as it means a 6.7% increase in their payrolls. With the elections coming up in Ontario on June 7th and Quebec on October 1st the increases could play an important part in how people will vote - and if the governments are listening, some changes or supporting measures could possibly slip through the assembly doors. And then again, doors can also be shut tightly.

ince its foundation, Sun Youth has provided ongoing support and financial assistance to individuals and low-income families. Fortunately, the organization benefits from the support of partners such as the Tribunal administratif du travail - division relations de travail. Over the last 27 years (first through the Commission des relations du travail and since January 2016 as the Tribunal administratif du travail), they have proven to be one of Sun Youth's most loyal donors. Its support was once again renewed on November 30th, 2017, when representatives of the Tribunal administratif du travail division relations de travail, presented their 27th annual contribution, $4,707, to help the organization during its Christmas Basket distribution. For over three decades, Sun Youth's Holiday Campaign has not only been

the Holidays and new toys for their children 12 and under. Sun Youth would like to thank the Tribunal administratif du travail, division relations de travail for their solidarity towards the organization. Their commitment continues to make a difference by contributing to the wellbeing of the community throughout Montreal and Quebec.

Enjoying wine with vegetables

any wine enthusiasts think strongly about taking a break altogether from wine for the month of January. However, for many, this

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

Have fun with wine and veggies Red wines: Delicate soft reds that are more fruity than spicy with light to medium tannins: Consider: Beaujolais, Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Valpolicella and Chianti ( not riserva) White wines: Most of them will work out with different preparations of vegetables. Favor bright fruit flavours and acidity and avoid oak. Consider: Spanish Albarino, Loire Chenin Blanc, German Riesling, Gavi and Grüner Veltliner If your wine preference is for fuller red wines, consider then slow roasting your vegetables or adding a bit of meat to them in your preparations. For example, the savoury flavors of roasted mushrooms complement the taste for Cabernetbased wines such as Bordeaux or Tuscan Sangiovese blends. If you have other earthy components such as dark beans, or bitter greens, gravitate for wines that display dark fruit notes such as cassis, blackberries, or blueberries often found in grapes such as Merlot and Petit Verdot. Furthermore, just the appropriate spice seasoning will make a bridge between your vegetables and you hearty red wine. For instance, consider roasting a cauliflower with za’atar and cumin and pair it with a light Grenache rhone blend. Asian flavours of

tamari and soy in veggies are are also another alternative for lovers of New World Pinot Noir. Finally, if you don't know what to drink at all with your vegetables, your last choice should be a sparkling wine..Bubbly has a naturally high acidity that is wonderful with vegetables, especially if they’ve been fried, and the bubbles keep your palate fresh. At the end of the day, my advice is to drink what you like, and don’t be hard on yourself on the pairings. Vegetables are not precious objects and are actually quite versatile with vegetables. The key is to have an open mind with them. Some of my memorable wine pairings with vegetables include dishes that my family have made for me such risotto with radicchio and Amarone. This is a dish that my father makes for me every time I visit him in Italy. I personally have a weakness for pasta e fagioli with Montepulciano D’Abruzzo. There is nothing fancy about this dish, plain goodness with a savoury wine. Finally, summer will be a sad affair if we would not have fried zucchini flowers with Verdicchio. I want to know what you are drinking. What’s your favorite vegetable and wine pairing?. Drop me at line and see you next week for more wine adventures.

Marques De Grinon Caliza Syrah / Petit Verdot 2013. ( La Mancha, Spain) SAQ # 11194980 $21.90 On the nose alluring aromas of Jammy black and blue fruit with cracked pepper. Also nuances of anis and leather. On the mouth, structured and velvety with a lovely acidity. Complex flavours that bring to mind smoke ,bing cherry as well as licorice and ink . Long and harmonious. Excellent choice with a pisto manchego.

Ripe with primal notes wild black fruits, spices and fragrant flowers such as violets. Fresh with flavors consistent with the nose reminiscent of strawberries and pepper. Pair it with oven roasted brussel sprouts.

resolution could turn out to be quite daunting. An alternative to detox is to incorporate more vegetables in your diet combined with your wine drinking.

Like any other food plate, a successful wine pairing with vegetables will depend on two criteria: Pick a wine that shows some of the same flavours and aromas as the plate, like medium sweetness or herbaceous notes. Otherwise, serve a wine that will contrast with the plate, such as a zesty white with something luscious, like avocado. It is important as well to take into consideration the cooking method of your ingredient. For instance, roasting and broiling brings out the richer, sweeter flavors in a vegetable. On the other hand, steaming and stir frying maintain the flavors light and fresh Other elements in a plate , from fresh herbs to spices, will weight in what you might drink with it, so consider alternatives at both ends of the light white to dark red wine spectrum.

Jamaica Jerk Chicken Wine & Dining

By Chef Peter Webster of Bouquet Garni Catering

I

have just returned from a lovely holiday in Negril Jamaica. It was a family reunion with 23 people from my wife’s side. I was basking in plus 30ºC weather on the beach while most Montrealers were suffering through this “Arctic Vortex”. I count my blessings sometimes! On the resort there was a jerk chicken shack. The chef was named Jolly. He prepared a wonderful jerk chicken with a rub, barbecued it to perfection over charcoal and then had some jerk sauce on the side. Jerk sauce is usually made with scotch bonnet peppers,

which adds some fire to the mouth. By having the sauce on the side, we North Americans can regulate the heat we can tolerate on the tongue. I believe I had the chicken five out of the seven days I was there. It was wonderful. I did not ask him for his recipe but have provided a similar jerk sauce recipe below. INGREDIENTS: • 3 onions, peeled and quartered • 6 cloves of garlic, peeled • 4 – 6 hot peppers (scotch bonnet or jalapenos) • 2 tbsp thyme

aturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that emphasizes prevention and the self-healing process through the use of natural therapies. While the roots of naturopathic medicine date back to the 1890s, naturopathic medicine has witnessed a rapid increase in public interest in recent years as a result of the growing consumer movement to solve the health care puzzle using prevention, wellness and respect for nature's inherent healing ability. Naturopaths blend centuries-old knowledge and a philosophy that nature is the

most effective healer with current research on health and human systems. Naturopathy focuses on identifying the underlying causes of disease, while naturopathic therapies are supported by research drawn from peerreviewed journals from many disciplines, including naturopathic medicine, conventional medicine, European complementary medicine, clinical nutrition, phytotherapy, pharmacognosy ( medicinal plants, homeopathy, psychology and spirituality. 1947 coins. There are two types of 7’s in the date, one with the tip of the 7 facing left (this is called “Straight 7”), and another with the tip curved right. To make things more interesting some of 1947 coins were minted with a small maple leaf after the date...we will explain why in a future article. The rarest combination is one where the 7 is curved, and there is a maple leaf after the date. This is a classic Canadian rarity. In my estimation less than a few hundred of these exist, and even in used condition it is valued in the thousands of dollars. Elizabeth (1953-present) began by continuing the tradition of her father of not having a crown on her portrait. Coins until 1967 continued to be issued in 80% silver. The 1967 date was special since it was the 100th anniversary of confederation, and Canadian animals appear on all denominations. For the 50 cent, an image of a howling wolf was struck...designed by well known artist Alex Colville. In 1968 all 50 cent pieces were struck in pure nickel, this continued until 2000, and since have been made of plated steel. For some reason the bust of the Queen appears with a crown starting in 1990, and this continued until 2002. A decision was made in the early 2000’s to end the regular circulation of 50 cent pieces. Since 2003 no coins were distributed for general use as money...however these coins are still produced every year in mint sets, and obtainable in rolls purchased from the Royal Canadian Mint. Michael Joffre is President of Carsley Whetstone & Company Inc. Canada’s oldest Coin Dealers with a history dating back to 1928.
