from Brussels, Belgium whose images of les cols bleus at work (at times definitely not!) are the subject of this novel exhibit at Galerie Station 16 an urban art gallery on Boulevard St. Laurent just around the corner from Prince Arthur. JAUNE - not the artist's real name - it's a pseudonym that resembles his surname - got the idea of the paradox of order and chaos coexisting in the public domain from his own experience as a maintenance worker over the course of three summers. "It was my student job," he says matterof-factly as he puts the finishing touches on a temporary mural whose theme dovetails with those in the paintings on display at the gallery until May 26. "My protagonists are historical but I adapt my narrative to each place." Amanda Brown-

ridge Assistant Director of Station 16 says all of JAUNE's characters are based on people he knows including himself. In as much as they are real, they also have universal appeal. While JAUNE is an international artist his work resonates with Montrealers because the issues with construction and sanitation workers are the same everywhere. "I grew up on the South Shore," she says laughing. It's the same thing. We thought he would be perfect - his work would resonate with our viewers."

JAUNE came to the vernissage dressed as a maintenance worker along with Station 16's staff and co-owner Adam Vieira who all donned orange overalls to give the event an authentic vibe not a hard sell given the installation of garbage bags with comical stenciled workers perched on top. They weren't the only ones wearing fluorescent garb among the invited guests sipping beer and wine at the trendy art hub. continued on Page 11

Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate

Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". Montreal Needs Extra Garbage Pick-Up During the Summer

here is a problem that appears to be increasing over the past few years during the summer and it has never really been addressed. Perhaps it is time to make a 'stink', a really big 'stink', against the stink - which prevails in the garbage bins of our fair city and its boroughs.

oughs, but like most things, they fell upon deaf ears. It all started back in 2015 under the Coderre administration, when they announced plans to eliminate twice a week garbage collection in all of its 19 boroughs by 2019 and instead have it collected only once a week. At the same time, they also announced the rolling out of brown bins for the Organic Waste Program, with weekly pick-ups. In theory it should have balanced out the changes to the regular garbage collections, but fast forward to 2018 and it is not working for many people. Once a week pick-up is not enough, especially in By Bonnie Wurst the downtown area. And it gets even mtltimes.ca stinkier. What they did NOT announce in 2015 It's that time of the and implemented in sevyear again when people, eral boroughs, is that once especially tourists, start to households are part of notice the stench - the 'je ne sais quoi' odour sud- the Organic Waste Prodenly attacking their ol- gram - once a week regufactory senses in a way lar garbage collection was that leaves many gagging, reduced to once every fanning at the air with TWO weeks. It is simple to undern't. stand; regular garbage bins Tourist season adds even more garbage and are usually filled within last summer I met more the first week and by the than a few visitors who second week they are questioned whether dead overflowing with all the animals (or worse) were other smelly trash that is being dumped into the non-compostable like: dibins. Complaints went out apers, rags, pizza boxes, to City Hall and the Bor- sanitary napkins, cat litter and lord knows what else.

Overflowing garbage bins

Only the raccoons, squirrels, skunks, mice, rats and even crows are celebrating. It is the same problem in areas that went from twice a week to once a week - and this goes for all apartment buildings with over eight units who are not participating in the Organic Waste Program, plus they are required to keep the bins inside the building until pick-up day. The stench from overflowing bins are wafting up into the apartments. Adding to the mess, I noticed less and less people were using the brown

up day. The solution for most was to simply stop participating in the program and throw the waste into regular bins in sealed plastic bags. It defeats the purpose of the program on all fronts. Last autumn during the election campaign I happened to meet Mayor Alan DeSousa of Ville Saint-Laurent, who was on the ground meeting his constituents. I took the opportunity to discuss the problem with him and offered insight into why the plan might not be working. I put forward the idea of the city going back to once a week pick-up for the summer. He acted surprised, insisting the program was a success, so I suggested he take a drive around his borough and see for himself what was are seen all over the city and neighbouring boroughs going on - and he prombins during the warmer viable option for us be- ised to look into it. Well, months. eek-ends are for relaxing and taking time out for yourself after a busy week of studying and working. Some people enjoy going to the gym, seeing friends, having a massage or going for a walk, whatever you like, there are endless ways to have some quality down time in Montreal. One way which I love to take time out is having some puppy time. Now, this might sound a little crazy, but being around dogs can be very therapeutic when you’re on a busy schedule. Not everyone is able to accommodate for a dog in their apartment, or they might just not have the time, so this option of a puppy

Coin Collecting - Starting a Roman Coin Collection – Part II

A

s we discussed last time, holding a Roman coin in your hand is indeed a special feeling...it is being connected to the history of one of the worlds greatest civilizations. This time we are going to look at one very fun and popular way to get a small Roman coin collection going.

By Michael Joffre mtltimes.ca

The 12 coin set of the 12 Caesars. The term 12 Caesars comes from the Latin work De vita Caesarum (The Lives of the Twelve Caesars) written by Hadrians secretary Suetonius. It is a biography of Julius Caesar plus the first 11 emperors. Most of the rulers are household names, and they all have very interesting, and at times somewhat disturbing, histo-

12

ries. We start with Julius Caesar. His coins were issued around 49 to 40 BC even though he was assassinated in 44 BC. Coins of Julius Caesar are available in all metals (bronze, silver, and gold) but most budget minded collectors usually opt for a nice denarius (small silver coin about the size of a dime), either with Caesars portrait, or often with an Elephant. The latter can sometimes be found for under $1,000...but silver coins with nice portraits will cost many times that. All coins of Caesar are very popular, and difficult to obtain. Augustus (also referred to as Octavian) 27 BC to 14 AD. Since he ruled for a very long time, many issues exist in all metals. Some are relatively common like the denarius with his grandchildren Gaius & Lucius on the reverse ($300 to $600), and others are incredibly rare. There are also very interesting larger silver coins of 3 denarii called Cistophorus, and stunning large brass coins called Sestertius. Tiberius 14-37 AD was the step son of Augustus, and although he became an experienced general, probably never thought he would be

the next emperor. The most commonly found coin of this reign is a denarius with a female figure...possibly Livia (his mother) seated on the reverse. This is regularly referred to as the Tribute Penny of the Bible, as it is quoted in the Bible (Matthew 22:2021)... Jesus, referring to a “penny” asked, “Whose is this image

gustus, and his rival Mark Antony. His real name is Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus and got his nick name as a child from the military boots (caligae) he wore on his father campaigns in Germany. From all accounts he was insane, and was assassinated after only 4 years. Gold and silver coins of this ruler are very difficult to obtain, es-

reverse. Claudius 41-54 AD. He was the younger son of the brother of Tiberius. He was in very poor health most of his life. Upon the assassination of Caligula he was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers. During his reign Rome had many military successes including most notably the invasion and conquest of Britain. He seemed however, not so lucky in his love life. He had several failed marriages, including his promiscuous 3rd wife who he had executed. He ended up marring his own niece Agrippina and adopted her son Nero. It is thought that Agrippina poisoned him to help her son gain power. Silver denarii of Claudius are very difficult to find, and like Caligula most collectors will fill this hole with a brass Sestertius or Dupondius. Nero 54-68 AD. Son of the 12 Caesars all in gold coins. Each coin is called sister of Caligula he was also an aureus as a group they are called aurei known for some depraved (this is the plurial of aureus). behaviour. last 2 emperors silver denarii are somewhat available but not easy to find. A wide variety of coins exist in all metals. One of most popular (and a favourite of mine) is a large brass Sestertius featuring the harbour in Ostia showing a pier, lighthouse, ships and a figure of Tiber. This coin sell for $2,000 to $20,000 depending on condition. The first 6 rulers are often refereed to as part of the Julio-Claudian dynasty as this family controlled the Roman empire for close to 100 years. The next 6 emperors will be discussed next article including the complicated civil war, and the next dynasty to appear...the Flavians. Michael Joffre is President of Carsley Whetstone & Company Inc. Since 1928 Carsleys has been buying and selling rare coins and related collectables. They are always interested in purchasing quality collections of older coins. One of the international theatre shows at the FTA will be the Mexican play "Tijuana" with Gabino Rodriguez

the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques (FTA), it kept its acronym when it changed to Festival Trans Amérique. Since the term "trans" now is mostly associated with gender, the FTA is simply known now as a festival of theatre and dance. The FTA presents a large variety of international events featuring troupes from China, Belgium, Brazil, and some other countries. A total of 25 theatre and dance shows will be presented in 17 different venues. The FTA runs from May 23 to June 7. For detail about performers, schedules, and ticket prices go to: www.fta.ca The theatre is also at the centre (together with other events) of the Montreal Fringe Festival scheduled for May 28 to June 17 at various venues downtown and in other areas. In its welcome, Amy "The 50-Ft. Woman" Blackmore, Executive and Artistic Director of the festival states: "With 800+ performances by 500+ artists from across the

globe, fringing is a festive adventure full of surprises. Over 60,000 festival-goers celebrate diversity, accessibility and artistic freedom with us annually." Lovers of the French song should have their chance to enjoy a variety of styles and genres during the eleven days of this year's FrancoFolies (inexplicably our friends at the Spectra Team have shortened the name of this festival to just the Francos, not a very wise move, I prefer the more playful FrancoFolies).Anyway, this iconic fest will run between June 8 and 17. Finally, the Chamber Music Festival that takes place from June 12 to 17 is another event to have in mind for this spring season. Among the shows announced I could mention André Laplante and the Rolston String Quartet and the New York Philharmonic Quartet. For detailed information go to: www.festivalmontreal.org

Our Emu wins Gold again

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

Below is a resent testimonial that I would like to share with you. While Erica raves about emu oil for herself and her family, I have also included a couple of emu stories involving pet cats. As I have often mentioned, our Australian rendered, unrefined emu oil is unsurpassed. “My sister first heard about your company at a trade show in Toronto. She has always suffered from terrible eczema, and had come home with your Emu Oil, which she swore has worked wonders for her skin since her purchase. I do not suffer from eczema, however, have battled cystic acne my whole life, which has persisted into my adulthood. I have tried everything. The creams, lotions, oils, and pills that I have tried over the years would surely shock you! After my sister had so much success with the Emu Oil, she recommended it to my mother and I. My mother suffers from rosacea. We are fair (blonde hair, pale skin), and between the three of us we seem to cover all skin ailments. I too have now become addicted to your Emu Oil. My skin is looking better than it has in years, thanks to your wonderful product. I have

16

recently re-stocked my emu oil, and purchased the Acne Oil (skin manager), as well as the Spoil Me Body oil as well. Thank you for your dedication to natural, safe, and effective skin care that has truly worked wonders on my family." Erica, Toronto A few years ago, I remember my new little kitten was running around exploring. Before I could save him, he hopped up onto our hot wood stove. Like the scared cats in Halloween movies he arched his back into the air, screeching in pain. I applied emu oil to his wee hurt footpads and he immediately calmed down. A customer showed me a troubling photo of her sad cat that had recently reacted to the medicine injected for a tooth cleaning procedure at the vet. The cat went into hysteria, crying in discomfort and proceeded over the next while to loose most of his hair. She said he was beyond miserable and asked if perhaps we had any natural cream or other product that might help him. As emu oil is so perfectly pure and safe, I suggested it. She retuned the next day, ecstatic. As soon as she applied the emu oil, the cat had calmed and eventually even started purring. If you do decide to try emu, know that the

colour and texture can vary from batch to batch. You may purchase a small bottle and the oil is a bright yellow and the next time you purchase, it is a little more of a creamy yellow. The quality is not affected and these differences simply have to do with nature being itself. A truly natural product has a shelf life. Makes sense. Emu oil is particularly fragile and is best kept cool, meaning refrigerated. Some people tell me their bathrooms are colder in winter and the small 30 ml bottle of emu oil is fine. We use emu oil everywhere, for everything. Our emu stories are extensive and if you choose to use emu oil for yourself, for anything and everything, please do share the miraculous results. And be reminded, your furry friends can benefit too. Emu always wins the GOLD! We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. Visit our online store: natural.ca. Stress Kills - It’s very simple

re you worried about your stress? You should be. Stress kills! Researchers suggest that as much as 6090% of illnesses are directly caused by or exacerbated by stress. Stress is related to major illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. It can also cause back pain, headaches,

By Donna Byrne mtltimes.ca

tooth grinding, upset stomach and digestive problems, sleep loss and exhaustion, skin problems , unhealthy weight gain or loss, and of course, loss of sex drive. These are just the physical symptoms. Stress is linked to depression, anxiety, mood swings, confusion, restlessness, irritability, insecurity, forgetfulness, and a host of other negative

mental and behavioral symptoms. We hear about good stress, bad stress. How do we know the difference? How does all of our stress accumulate? Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. What’s it doing to us? With stress so clearly linked to our health, it is shocking to me that we don’t think about our own level of stress and do something about lowering it. Oh yes, we say “I am so stressed” but do we really know what that means? The things that cause stress are called stressors. Do we know our own stressors? Are we aware of the feeling of stress on our own bodies? Have you ever felt sick to your stomach during a test? Have you had days when you were so loaded down with homework that you had trouble sleeping? Have you ever been so worried about something that you

ended up with a terrible headache? If so, then you know what it's like to feel stress. Stress is often worn as a badge of accomplishment in our society. It’s not enough that we compete to see who can do the most, but we compete to see who can handle the most stress doing it. With such an unhealthy attitude towards stress, it’s no wonder that stress-related illnesses are so common. Canadian Mental Health Association slogan in 2009 was, "Now more than ever, invest in yourself” The number of Canadians reporting stress has increased by 30 per

cent since last year, the Canadian Mental Health Association reported at the start of its 58th annual national mental health week in 2009. Recent studies show that it does not seem to be getting any better now in 2013.The economy is down, jobs are being lost, flu season is here and it’s cold outside Stress © Jody Mark Stress is eating at me every minute and second of the day, how do I cope with the horrible effects and make it go

away? I feel so tired and run down and I don't sleep, I lie in bed at night and wonder why it runs so deep. Everyone asks why do you look so sad, do I tell them that my stress is eating me up and that I feel really bad? Does everyone notice how I walk around in a daze, and that I have deep black bags under my eyes nowadays. I wake up every morning feeling so hopeless, like nothing ever goes right and wondering why my life

has to be such a mess. Stress is my one worst enemy, it’s taken over my mind and my whole life in every single degree. Source: Stress Effects Life, Poem about Sadness All too often people feel what this poem is all about. I, as a health care professional, have witnessed the horrible effects of stress during my 30 plus years in hospitals and homecare. Over the next several weeks I will attempt to cover topics from the long list of stress related illnesses in an attempt to understand them more. Send me your stories, thoughts or comments. typical family comedy, "Show Dogs" directed by Raja Gosnell and written by Max Botkin, is nothing extraordinary in that already very saturated genre. However, if one thing is to be underlined, that is the great work of animation, lip sync, and special effects people who managed to convey very realistic images of talking animals. This detail is very important because all the main characters are indeed animals, who not only speak but can also communicate with their human handlers. (Those of a certain age like myself, should remember Francis the Talking Mule of those funny 1950s movies we then enjoyed as kids). Max (voiced by Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) is a police dog with the NYPD which at the beginning of the movie we see watching how some exotic-animal smugglers are bringing a baby-panda into the port of New York. Max, in the best tradition of the compassionate cop, promises the little panda that he will rescue him. Three talkative pigeons who follow the dog agent everywhere

would also witness the criminal act and will eventually have a part in this fight between "law and crime." After a bureaucratic jurisdictional dispute between the NYPD and the FBI is finally solved, it is agreed that FBI agent Frank (Will Arnett) will conduct the investigation accompanied by NYPD

at the top dog show in the country, where people who look for expensive dogs and other animals would converge. Frank and Max are then dispatched to Las Vegas where the dog show takes place, although some disagreement at first would make both agents separate. Max would get the assistance of a former dog show champion now abandoned, Philippe (voiced by Stanley Tucci) who would later be joined by an old fan, and the pigeons. For his part, Frank, with the support of dog exhibitor Mattie (Natasha Lyonne) would try his best pretending to be the master of Max who now is to be presented at the dog show. A prospect that at first Max –a respectable, working dog– didn't appreciate much, but which he eventually would get somehow used to and even enjoy. After all, he is doing an undercover job. "Dog Show" is a movie designed to entertain without any other pretensions, and in that regard, it fulfils its objective. Kids will especially enjoy this film. Length: 92 min.

Bar-B-Barn - Legendary chicken & ribs brings back 50 years of Memories

T

sary this year - it opened in April 1967 just before Expo 67 - he chuckles and returns my question with one of his own, "On or off the books?" Co-owner with father and son Manny and Dalton Barnoff McQueen first met the pair on the golf course in Candiac while he was working as a caddy as a mere lad of 8 1/2 years old. The fa-

therless youngster from the south shore was drawn to the father-son duo and they to him. They sent him to caddy school to learn how to ply his trade and he caddied for them until he was 15. At this point Manny said to him, "Enough, enough - time to get a real job and come work for us." Manny brought him back to the Bar-B-Barn on Guy Street and said, "This is your future." McQueen complied with his mentor's request to come work for the family business and the rest is history. He had the usual apprenticeship in the restaurant & hotel industry starting off as a busboy - he quit the first night - but then went back shortly after. "I learned the whole kitchen, how to be a butcher, eventually becoming a waiter and bartender." On the day he turned 21 he became a manager. McQueen laughs again when he thinks back to those days. Photo: Val Provost "I'm still working here 6 The cozy atmosphere is still the same at both locations of the Bar B Barn days a week." "I had wanted to be a are CPAs," he adds mat- heyday of the Bar-B-Barn and sports. "Back in the were at the bar. The CPA but never pursued ter-of-factly. McQueen when the customers day, the 70's, the press - Expos, the Als, the Habs it," he says with no trace waxes euphoric when he were an A-list of`Who's The Gazette, The Mon- came before and after of regret. Two of my sons reminisces about the Who in politics, media, treal Star - all those guys the game."

had the white limousine and lots of gold bling and an entourage," McQueen says. Then there was David Joyner - not exactly a household name - but known and adored by millions of children as Barney the Dinosaur. "He would sign autographs both in and out of costume," McQueen says laughing.

Bar-B crew. Manny & Dalton Barnoff, Bob Gainey, and Tom McQueen became fishing buddies and would go on fishing trips up north. "He was a very, very classy man," McQueen says of "Le Capitaine" of the Montreal Canadiens. Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos would also become a personal friend. A framed autographed glossy photo of him hangs on the walls of the rustic establishment along with countless others, a testament to the landmark eatery's reputation far and wide for friendly service and mouthwatering chicken and rib combos. "Bell Canada and CN were big clients in the 80's," McQueen says. By this time a second Bar-BBarn was open for business on Sources Blvd. in DDO. Both barbeque restaurants are still going strong. Three times per year the hands-on McQueen makes personal deliveries of vacuumpacked meats all the way to the Northwest Territo-

Manny Barnoff was a class act himself sending racks of ribs to prisons. In the early years Barnoff had a ventilation company which took him down south where he developed a taste for ribs. He started to experiment with different recipes in his mother's kitchen before he opened the Bar-BBarn. One day he said to McQueen, "I think I've got it." He didn't have a kitchen at the restaurant yet so he cooked at his mother's place transporting the ribs and chicken in his LTD Station wagon downtown. "He worked hard for his success," McQueen says. It would become a great business. "The city was buzzing," McQueen explains. Business was so good that one day Manny got out of his car in the middle of a snowstorm and started handing out combos. Hockey legend Bob Gainey was a friend of the

ries travelling by Air Inuit with his own security. Now that is service. He wouldn't have it any other way. McQueen isn't the only loyal member of the Bar-B-Barn family. "My barmaid just retired. She was 76 when she retired," McQueen says with evident pride. "I wouldn't change anything," he says. He hears all the time from young people, families who have moved away about how much they miss the Bar-BBarn. As soon as they come back to Montreal they'll say, "I haven't been here for a while, but the first thing I've got to do is come to the Bar-B-Barn." McQueen attributes the Bar-B's enduring brand and loyal clientele to the recipes which have stayed the same from "Day 1" along with the decor. His motto: keep smiling. "I still think I have a good 20 more years in me," he says.

CKGM Radio personality Ralph "The Birdman" Lockwood had a lot to do with bringing in the crowd to the chicken & ribs eatery downtown. People who listened to his show in the 1970's will recall Lockwood saying on air, "Come join me at the BarB-Barn." This was when he wasn't asking his trademark question, "How's your bird?" "He was there every day," McQueen says. The barn-style restaurant was also a favorite of Top 40 Radio DJ Marc "Mais Oui" Denis the bilingual voice of Montreal's airwaves for decades. The `"Bar-B" as it was affectionately known by many Montrealers was

going like the Energizer Bunny." Political heavyweights Brian Mulroney and René Lévesque were regular customers too. Lévesque lived just up the street and would come by to get his "fix" of chicken and ribs around 11:30 am. "Every Saturday morning he would walk here - no security. He had a great character. He was funny. He had a political character which was rough but generally, he was nice." Lévesque had one bad habit that is barely tolerated today - he smoked. In those days you could smoke in bars and restaurants. "He smoked like a chimney," McQueen says with a wry smile.

the meet-up location pre/post-game. "We would rent city buses to take people to and from the football games," McQueen says. Such was the dedication of the Bar-B's own 'team' that they made sure the fans made it to home field to cheer on the Alouettes. One of the "boys" who frequented the Bar-BBarn was Gazette journalist and bon vivant Nick Auf der Maur. "He was a fixture at the bar," McQueen says. "Never a dull moment - he always had stories. He was another Ralph. He would keep

The "best ever" figure to cross the Bar-B-Barn's threshold was Brian Mulroney. He would send the RCMP hours before to stake out the place. Then Brian and Mila would come in with their own security and they would have dinner. Mulroney still came after he was no longer Prime Minister although Lévesque didn't come by much once he moved to Nun's Island. Other notables graced the premises like the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the early 80's. Sugar Ray was a class act. "Oh my god, he was so classy. He
