ccording to a report released by Montreal’s Inspector General Denis Gallant, past Mayor Denis Coderre bypassed the law in the way he awarded contracts for the city's Formula E Race in 2017. Coderre first wanted Evenko, the top independent promoter and producer in Canada, to handle the main event, but the company came to the conclusion that the race and events would lose mil-

lions of dollars a year for the first three years. That's when Coderre created the non-profit company 'Montreal It's Electric' with the mandate to secure government subsidies. Evenko then became the main subcontractor. http://mtltimes.ca/Montreal/entertainment/festivals/imagine-monkland-2018unveil-program/

Wajsman and Simon were the Masters of Ceremonies for the civil society event which ran behind schedule but otherwise was without incident. Wajsman who is also the editor of The Suburban newspaper emphasized Israel's resilience and role in constructing a free and democratic society in the embattled region of the Middle East. "Israel isn't merely a geographic location," he said. "It is a focus for justice, for everyone who believes in justice which is more important than social peace." He drew the crowd's attention to filmmaker John Curtin, seated not far from the podium. He urged everyone to see Curtin's film Why the Jews? For many years it was housed in the same building as the Atwater Library, but has now moved to the St. Michel borough. “We also have outreach programs based out of six sites across Montreal,” continues D'Arrisso. “Our clientele ranges from newborns to 18-year-olds with the 'Parent Child Mother Goose' program addressing our youngest clients. ontrary to what some people might think, the Montreal Children's Library (MCL) is independent from the Montreal library network and not funded by tax dollars. Instead it relies on donations and grants to keep its doors open. In fact, the MCL wants to expand its hours by opening on Saturdays, but funding constraints make this is a challenge. Unfortunately, the summer months tend to be the season when Canadians feel the least charita-

ble. To meet this challenge, CanadaHelps and The GIV3 Foundation have launched the fourth annual Great Canadian Giving Challenge. MCL is the chosen charity to represent the province of Quebec, so every dollar donated to the library in June viaCanadaHelps.org or GivingChallenge.ca automatically enters it to win an additional $10,000 in a contest. “Some 80% of our funding comes from donations,” explains Alexandra D'Arrisso, President of the MCL. “We also have a lot of volunteers—including myself and the entire board--working for the library. We have Lego and robotics classes, role playing games, we provide an escape for Mom, are the venue for events such as Halloween parties, and can provide mentors.” “I work in a school, and can tell which kids have benefited from exposure to books at an early age.

Somehow, when I least expect it, I will probably spot the Fringe’s version of Groucho, Harpo and Chico Marx (maybe Kenny, Dianne and Cat) running around the area with sheer lunacy on their minds, or wreak havoc at Fringe Park, in that zany, anarchistic manner that was inspired by another night at the Fringe-For-All. here are some of the shows that impressed me enough that I will probably go and catch throughout the 28th edition of the Montreal Fringe Festival: “”Apocalipsinc: Humanity is A Drag”, “SCUM FM”, “What the Hell Happened to My Patio Furniture?”, “Late Night Kids & Friends”, “Sotto Voce”, “Mid Night”, “James and Ziggy”, and “Justice on the Ropes: A Clint Hacker Mystery”. And third, I have to give these nearly 70 acts on the Fringe-For-All line-up a lot of credit for the measures that they go through to make sure you are least aware of their respective shows, which at times borders on virtual bombardment. There are the plethora of promotional cards and posters that covered each table top in the club; then there’s the creative way the acts use their twominute stage time (which most of the time involved food products that sometimes were quite messy, which put Stephanie the stage hand to work quite a lot that evening with her trusty broom and mop); and then there were the

Asian Heritage Month comes to an end

"Festival Accès Asie highlights the rich heritage of Asia and is an excellent example of how cultural diversity makes our communities so vibrant. It allows festival-goers to experience these cultures while strengthening bonds with their fellow citizens." That's what Mélanie Joly, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, had written in her message included in the booklet issued with the occasion of the 23rd edition of this festival. There is no question that after these four weekends where various activities ranging from classical Asian dance to concerts, to conferences, the organizers could be satisfied with the end result of the event. It was a month in which people from the somehow very different countries that make up the sizeable Asian continent, got together to present to Montrealers at large, the equally vast range of their cultural expressions. In doing so, and in the best tradition of the multicultural framework, they were able to show at the same time the results of their interaction with the Canadian society, and in this particular case,

May is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) month

M

ay is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) month. Most of us know someone who has or has been effected by this disease. If you weren’t already aware, World Multiple Sclerosis Day is on the 30th of May. Two million three hundred thousand people are living with MS around the world. Canada has one of the

By Donna Byrne mtltimes.ca

highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated 100,000 Canadians living with the disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults aged 15 to 40, younger children and older adults are also diagnosed with the disease. Many are probably living with MS without knowing it. Every 5 hours there is a new diagnosis of MS in Canada and while treatment has improved in recent years, few with MS are

able to find work. By drawing attention to MS, hopefully it will lead to a better life and better opportunities for those with this disease. MS is currently classified as an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system .The disease attacks myelin, the protective covering of the nerves. This causes inflammation and often damages the protective covering. Myelin is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibers. If there is damage to the myelin cover, nerve impulses will have minor interruptions to complete interruptions depending on the amount of damage. MS can cause symptoms such as extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, and cognitive impairment and mood changes. Its effects can be physical, emotional and financial. Currently there is no cure, but each day researchers are learning more about what causes MS and are zeroing in on ways to prevent it. (MS society) Although much progress has been made, many questions regarding MS remain unanswered. Each person’s experience with MS will be very different. Managing the disease

will also be different for each person depending on their disease course prior health status, and lifestyle. Life with MS can be challenging and its effects can have a significant impact on those with the disease, their loved ones and their caregivers. Lots of research is being done on various aspects of MS. The MS society has

funded $175 million since 1948 when it was started. Still nothing seems fast enough when it is you or a loved one dealing with the disease. A Symptom management and quality of life study was funded and completed at the end of this past march. (Audrey Hicks McMaster University) This study looked at imple-

mentation of the new Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (PAGs) for Adults with Multiple Sclerosis. This physical activity research has gained a great deal of attention recently for its potential to help people with MS manage their symptoms. Dr. Hicks has completed testing on 69 participants to date, and discovered that participants

that adhered to PAGs 75% of the time (during the 16 week study period) experienced significantly improved strength, reduced fatigue, and improved mental and physical health-related quality of life. Sure we would rather have a cure or better still prevention but for now quality of life is so important. Worth looking at.

This particular Earth to Body product soothes and calms, dry, itchy or damaged skin with the addition of aloe, emu and neem oil. This is a particularly useful lotion for men, as it can help irritated or damaged skin as a cause from shaving. Another aloe vera product worth mentioning for its amazing healthcare is the Zinc Oxide. Deeply satisfied customers claim it irreplaceable. Kale- Does it live up to the hype?

I

n 2015 an historic blizzard hit New York City and health-conscious green smoothie drinkers charged into stores, stockpiling their favourite leafy green. This frenzy led to a kale shortage across the city and talk of this first-world “food crisis” was heard across North Americawhen New Yorkers run out of the latest trendy food item, people pay attention. Is kale deserving of all this praise and fame? Yes! Kale is definitely a nutrient-dense food and a great vegetable to include in our diet, but we should never overdo any one food. Kale belongs to the brassica family of vegetables, along with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussel sprouts. Brassica vegetables are known to prevent cancer due to their powerful polyphenols. Kale is probably the hardiest one of the bunch. It grows well in most climates and since it’s so easy to grow and keeps well, it tends to be very affordable. Nutritionally, it is a superstar! It’s known to support cardiovascular health, it’s anti-inflammatory, loaded with anti-oxidants and a great source of many vitamins and minerals like vitamins K, A, and C, and manganese. One downside to kale is that like others in the brassica family, it can disrupt the production of thyroid hormones when eaten raw. For most of us, this is not a problem unless perhaps we eat too • June 2, 2018

much on a regular basis. Another potential problem with kale is that some don’t digest it well since it contains a type of sugar that can cause gas and bloating. The good news is that cooking kale can dramatically reduce its effects on the thyroid hormone and makes it much easier on the digestive system. If kale is not your thing, you can pass on it but be

By Natalie Lavers mtltimes.ca

sure to include other brassica vegetables in your diet. And if you’re anything like those kalecrazed New Yorkers, remember to adhere to the wise principles of variety and moderation. Now is a great time to start growing kale in your garden. You can pick it through the summer and it’s a gift that keeps on giving; each stalk will keep producing new leaves well into the fall season. Kale Pesto • 1 bunch of dinosaur kale, thick stems removed

• 1 cup of basil leaves • ½ cup of olive oil • 1 big clove of garlic • ½ tsp salt Directions: Break up your kale leaves into 3” pieces and add ¼ of them to your food processor along with the olive oil and garlic and salt. Keep adding more kale and then your basil bit by bit and continue pulsing. Once your greens are in you should have a nice thick paste, if it seems too dry, add a little more olive oil. Your pesto will keep for about a week in the fridge or for several months in the freezer. For each of portion pasta, mix in approximately 1-2 heaping tablespoon of pesto, stir it up well and top with pine nuts and parmesan cheese.
