he biggest event in Canadian motorsport took over the city streets, its race track and hearts once more this past weekend, in an octane fueled week-long event. As once again, the world's motor racing elite arrived in town - and much like it was back in 1978 at the inaugural race on what is now circuit Gilles Villeneuve; it would be a weekend dominated by the Scuderia Ferrari. As always, Montreal had a touch of class, sending former World Champion and local lad, Jacques Villeneuve, around the track for a lap in the moments leading up to the start of the race, in his father's Ferrari. Gilles Villeneuve led that red and white beast to victory and ce-

mented his name - literally - into the roads of the now famous track. Montreal's other native son and only Canadian currently driving in the championship, Lance Stroll, enjoyed a much less glorious and surprisingly more brief time in the sun, as an early error caused to lose control of the rear of his car, ever so slightly, yet just enough to rub wheels with rookie Brendon Hartley - sending the New Zealander careening into the wall, slamming hard into its cement, and going on a sideways voyage to destination scrapheap, taking the broken Williams of Stroll along with him for the ride. Perhaps the most vicious crash of the young season, earned a collective groan from the many fans as the action played and replayed on the giant screens situated around the grandstands. Stroll, who had his best race

here at home in his first go around last year, was out of the race on his first lap. Defending champion, Lewis Hamilton, also had a difficult weekend - seemingly struggling to find grip from practice to qualification and into the race. Despite putting in a valiant effort, and putting up a strong fight with the Red Bull racing duo, he wasn't able to find his feet on the podium and had to settle for a fifth place finish. His teammate, Valtteri Bottas, enjoyed a solid weekend and kept the two two surging Red Bull's in his rearview mirror for the entirety of the action bring his Silver Arrow home for a second place finish. Max Verstappen, who stormed into a final lap in qualification to displace Hamilton, was equally impressive on race day, but couldn't find his way around Bottas. His teammate, Daniel Riccia-

rdo drove well and fund himself defending hard against a surging Lewis Hamilton but kept the Britton at bay to finish fourth. The story of the weekend though, was the dominance of Sebastian Vettel who arrived at the paddocks on race day morning on his bicycle, visibly focused as he rode passed autograph seekers and photographers.Taking that same focus into the race where he and his Ferrari galloped out of the gate and blazed a trail of glory for the entire seventy lap race. Nobody else was even close to the man on the day. With Vettel winning, he now takes lead of the drivers standings by a single point over Lewis Hamilton, again adding a little drama to what has been a back-and-forth seesaw battle this season - much like last.

day she was congratulated by residents of the Peter McGill district because of the recent announcement of the new two primary schools for that sector, there were other issues on which the administration performance was not so complimented. One of those is the disappointing performance regarding the replacement of trees in many of the downtown streets: large segments of Sainte Catherine, Sherbrooke, Simpson, Saint Mathieu, to name just a few, have seen their trees gone and never replaced, despite demands made by neighbours for the last three years. In some cases, the borough bureaucrats have decided to

deal with the missing trees more definitively: instead of planting new trees they have ordered to pave over the openings in the sidewalks where trees used to be placed. Yes it's too soon to dismiss the Mayor and her party, but what is certain is that it is not too late to make some decisive changes: move away from an anti-car posture that in some cases borders fanaticism, pay more attention to what the citizens are demanding, rather than to what bureaucrats who don't have to respond to anyone, say. Many would like to think that the Mayor if she rectifies, may succeed after all.

Mount Royal. On weekends the two roads that cross the mountain, Remembrance from the west and Camillien Houde from the east, will no longer be connected. The move has created strong reactions, mostly adverse for Plante. The most recent problem for the Mayor and her party, also originated after a Plateau Mont-Royal decision, was the closure of a popular ball field in the north-east side of the Jeanne Mance Park. Frequented by young people who enjoy softball, many of them from the Dominican community, the park was one of the park's trafeatures. youngsters under 18 years old. Of this number, 80% are children under 10 years of age. Donor support is essential in maintaining this service, for the welfare of beneficiaries and for the proper development of the youngest among them. Beyond its mission to offer the ultimate adult hockey experience for all its members, the LFA also plays an important role in social engagement, particularly with Sun Youth. In recent years, the league has supported various programs, raising more than $ 30,000 for the organization. Not only does

the LFA help raise funds and food for the organization's food bank, it also plays a leading role in raising awareness of food insecurity, poverty and social exclusion. Sun Youth's Board of Directors, management, staff and volunteers wish to thank everyone involved in the LFA's 2017-2018 Final Championship Game for bringing such a nice contribution to the organization. On behalf of the thousands users of the Food Band who will benefit from this generosity, thank you for making a significant difference in their lives! June 16, 2018 •

Montreal PotCoin-Rodman-Trump and North Korea Connection

Trump. And the explanation is just as surreal as the connection. PotCoin, which first started up in 2014 by three Montreal entrepreneurs, is something like the BitCoin digital currency, but the difference is that it's intended specifically for the legal cannabis market. It is has been fac-

ing some big hurdles, rising up and down in the stock markets - and more importantly not being able to enter the US banking system where even though some states have legalized cannabis, it is considered illegal under federal law. Nonetheless, PotCoin appears to continue trying to forge ahead - with their connection to Dennis Rodman, a retired but very popular five-time NBA champion and major supporter of Donald Trump. Back in 2013 Rodman was invited to visit North Korea by Kim Jong Un, who had been a longtime fan of former NBA's superstar Michael Jordan. The PotCoin connection came in 2017 when the company sponsored Rodman on a trip to North Korea, where Rodman was seen in images all over the media wearing PotCoin T-shirts and hats. The controversial NBA Champion, who said he considers both Trump and Kim Jong Un friends, offered to 'straighten things out' between them - and he actually might have been influential in bringing them together. It is un-

clear, but there have been rumors for years that North Korea is a cannabis paradise and not frowned upon. Fast-forward to 2018, to the summit in Singapore and there is Dennis Rodman seen in pictures, arriving at the airport on June 11th wearing a 'Peace Starts in Singapore' T-shirt, with PotCoin.com printed on top and a 'Make America Great Again' cap. Another very bizarre moment during one of the most important summits in history. In a Washington Post report, PotCoin representative Shawn Perez said that the 'PotCoin team has been incredibly supportive of Rodman’s peace mission from the beginning' and he is 'thrilled to see how the political climate has been improved between North Koreans and the US since he became involved'. Then in a CNN video which went viral, Rodman is seen crying out with joy over the Singapore summit and saying in an interview, while wearing his 'Make America Great Again' cap and PotCoin Tshirt, “We have really put

www.mtltimes.ca

ourselves on the line to reach out to North Korea, and they have been so gracious to me, my family and the United States. So let’s make this happen. If Trump can pull this off, more power to him.” As far as Rodman is concerned the summit was a complete success, but according to analysts and reporters and although a document was signed - the only thing that really happened was an agreement to continue talks. It may be unconventional, surreal or completely bizarre, but in the end, should a deal be negotiated that would see North Korea completely denuclearize, perhaps it will be Dennis Rodman who gets the credit - and not Trump or Kim Jong Un. In the least, one thing is certain - PotCoin has garnered invaluable global attention, but whether it translates into the same kind of success for the struggling company remains to be seen.

What’s happening in Montreal

t was 60 years ago that amateur boxer Berry Gordy, Jr. established a recording company called “Hitsville, U.S.A.” in his hometown of Detroit. Six decades later, that small record label, which changed its name to “Motown”, has become a rock music institution, which made such singers and groups like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson Five, Diana Ross & The Supremes, the Four Tops and the Temptations into international superstars, and songs like “ABC”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, “Shop Around” and “Dancing in the Streets” a major part of the history of rock music. And in the spirit of the golden age of the Motown Sound, evenko will be presenting the hit Broadway musical “Motown: the Musical” for an eight performance run at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts from June 19 to 24. “Motown is such a special record label because its songs were so timeless and how it managed to spread a message of unity, love and bringing people together, which it did so well,” said Justin Reynolds, who portrays Motown’s legendary singer/songwriter/producer Smokey Robinson (who also fronted the group the Miracles). Reynolds, who has been with the Motown:The Musical national touring company since last September, admits that it’s a dream job – and a blessing -- to portray Robinson in the show, who is his longtime idol. Although his favorite song by Robinson is his 1970s solo hit “Cruising”, the Smokey Robinson song that he enjoys performing is “You Really Got A Hold on Me”, especially within the context that he sings that song in the show. “It happens during the mid-60s when the Motown Revue tour has a performance in Birmingham, Alabama, and a gunshot is heard before the show starts,” he said. “Berry wanted to stop the show and have everyone go home, but Smokey decides to go onstage first in place of the usual opening act, which was the

This bilingual and multicultural comedy showcase will take place on June 23, 7:30 p.m., at the Vanier College auditorium, located at 865 St. Croix Avenue in Ville St. Laurent. Featured as part of this edition’s line-up are Emile Khoury, Dixit Patel, Jacob Ospian Echeverria, Kevin Raphael, Massimo Cannistraro, and Just For Laughs veteran (and 2011 JFL Homegrown Competition winner) Dave Merheje. Born in Windsor and raised in Toronto, Merheje comes from a Lebanese background, in which he says his family members were very expressive people. “You would get yelled at one moment, and then become very loving towards each other the next moment,” said Merheje during a recent phone interview from his home in L.A. “They were very honest, and not passive aggressive. In fact, my father is one of the funniest people I know without even trying. He does and says whatever he wants with no regrets. Living with my family is almost like a sitcom because everyone is funny and they are always laughing.” Known for his in your face, stream of consciousness style of comedy, in which he tackles not only his personal experiences, but also topics such as terrorism, sex, drugs and the club scene, Merheje also believes that stand-up comedy is a great vehicle to end people’s bias towards many ethnic communities. “Stand-up comedy gets people the opportunity to check out what different ethnicities are all about. It gives them no excuse to have any more prejudices and stereotypes,” he said. Tickets to the Haboubs and Laloos Comedy Night on June 23 cost $20 each. For more information, call 514-264-9301 or go to www.haboubsandlaloos.com *** With the announcement this past week that the 2026 World Cup will take place in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico – with Montreal as one of its sites – soccer fever will certainly rise to new heights on the pitch over the next eight years. And in that spirit, the GOAL Initiative, which

raises funds for organizations that help support families, youth, social activities and education such as Right to Play, Share the Warmth Foundation and Montreal Community Cares Foundation, will hold its annual soccer

tournament tomorrow, June 17, at Percival Molson Stadium starting at 9 a.m. Admission is free. Supported by Canada Soccer and hosted by Jason Rockman of CHOM and Patrick Langlois of Rouge FM, the event will feature an ongoing outdoor soccer tournament featuring 23 teams representing an array of local bars, restaurants and industries such as Burgundy Lion, evenko, and Bombardier. There will also be plenty of food and drink, activities, kiosks, a soccer boutique, music, and two 2018 World Cup soccer matches that will play on the stadium’s giant screen: Mexico vs. German at 11 a.m. and Switzerland vs. Brazil at 2 p.m. *** Tomorrow night (June 17) is your last chance to catch the Cote St. Luc Dramatic Society’s (CSLDS) latest production, which is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1968 musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. And the main question was if the troupe of intergenerational singers, dancers and actors would be able to pull off the challenge of performing a major musical in which the entire narrative was told entirely in song. The answer is a resounding “yes”, and the CSLDS passed this challenge with flying colors … technicolors, that is! The show is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, a young dreamer who is the son of Jacob, yet garners the envy of his brothers because of the prophetic dreams he envisions. As a result of their jealousy, the brothers throw him in a pit and have him sold into slavery in Egypt. Yet somehow, through his never ending prophetic dreams, he gains the confidence of the Pharoah, and becomes his personal confidante, while Jacob believes the story his other sons tell him of Joseph’s fate, in which they say he is dead. “Joseph and the Amazing

Technicolor Dreamcoat” has all the characteristics of what has made a typical CSLDS production such a hit with community theatergoers, from the immersive theatre in the round setting, the colorfully authentic costumes, the energetic dance numbers and the overall professional manner each performer, whether they be a lead or a member of the chorus, conducted themselves onstage. And when I attended the May 31 performance, this relatively young theatrical troupe displayed a highly admirable sense of traditional showmanship and “the show must go on” attitude, when certain members of the cast had to deal with physical injuries, a bout with bronchitis, and personal matters, their fellow cast members stepped up to the plate and made sure that night’s performance would go off without a hitch, which it certainly did, and it won a whole new sense of respect from that night’s audience (myself included). What else makes “Joseph” such a delight to watch and experience is how each musical number is done in a different musical genre (my favorites include Pharoah done a la Elvis Presley, circa 1956, and when Joseph’s brothers and Jacob sing the number “Those Canaan Days” in the style of 1960s French singer Jacques Brel). However, Sam Boucher shines in the lead as Joseph, giving the role the right blend of strength, empathy and respect; and the duo of Jeanne Motulsky and Nicole Arrage as the show’s narrators are superb, as they excel in their jobs of guiding the audience through the story of Joseph, and really helps the show flow so masterfully every time they are onstage. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is another fine addition to the Cote St. Luc Dramatic Society’s growing resume of impressive, Broadwayquality productions. They have continued to strike an important blow to how increasingly popular and important community theatre is, and how the

CSLDS is quickly becoming a major force in the Montreal theatrical scene. For more information, got to: csldramaticsociety.com *** Also, tonight (June 16) is your last chance to check out WISTA’s latest production “The Addams Family: A Musical” at the Riverdale High School auditorium. Based on Charles Addams’ famous cartoons that appeared in the New Yorker magazine, as well as the popular 1960s ABC sitcom and the series of movies from the 1990s, the musical – which focuses on grown up daughter Wednesday about to be engaged to a man who is not like her rather unusual family – is just like the Addams clan: creepy and spooky, mysterious and kooky, and altogether hooky. There are stand out performances from every member of this cast, especially Nour Malek as matriarch Morticia, Tricia Fitz as Wednesday, and scene stealer Daniel Wilkinfeld as Uncle Fester. For more information, go to: www.WISTA.ca *** It was exactly five years ago that a devastating flood affected parts of southern Alberta that resulted in powerful mudslides, 32 states of emergency across that part of the province, more than 100,000 people evacuated from their homes, five fatalities and over $6 billion in damages. Tonight (June 17), the Discovery Channel marks the fifth anniversary of this “Flood of Floods” with “Alberta Floods: Rogue Earth”, which airs at 9 p.m. The documentary will not only focus on the flood itself and the damages it created, it will also focus on the courage, strength and resilience of the people of that affected area, as they recall their respective stories of the flood and its aftermath through exclusive interviews, video footage and never-beforeseen raw footage that captures what this “Flood of Floods” was all about, and the lessons that have been learned when it comes to being better prepared for future natural disasters.

It always comes back to paying it forward. "We're keeping the cycle going. We're trying to connect more with different organizations so that when we need support, it will be there for us." There's lots happening to make this a success. ElKaim was on Breakfast Television recently to pitch the event which she sees as more of a celebration. She's brimming with enthusiasm about the movers and shakers who are lending their support and optimistic others will soon tune into the Victoria Village vibe. “Artists,

Dalle-Parc Supporters Rally in Downtown Montreal

first part of the Turcot to be cut.” Mintz also suggests that the Dalle-Parc is symptomatic of a larger problem; the MTQ has no target for how much of its overall budget is allocated for active transport. “Amazingly, the MTQ does not even seem to be keeping track of what it is spending on

active transport. But from what we can determine, that number is well under 1% of its budget across Quebec.” “Quebec gives lip service to encouraging walking or riding bicycles, but is simply not spending on the necessary infrastructure for this to ever happen,” she lamented. Still, Mintz said she is encour-

answers about the project “In 2010, former Liberal MTQ Minister Sam Hamad promised this bridge as part of the multibillion dollar Turcot project, but then it was quietly dropped from the plans,” said Lisa Mintz of Sauvons la Falaise. “For years, we have been fight-

ing to get the government to honour its promise; we are now worried the bridge will be 'unpromised' a second time.” “It is one year since the 2017 Grand rassemblement pour le retour de la Dalle-Parc took place. Since then, the file has advanced...the City of Montreal has committed to this. MTQ Minister Fortin, as well as Premier Couillard have said that the project will be realized, said Tania Gonzalez of the Conseil régional de l'environnement (CRE) de Montréal. “While these signs are encouraging, we still do not know the timeline of the project and have not had a formal financial commitment in the provincial budget,” added Gonzalez. Mintz expressed frustration that neither the provincial government nor Montreal is ensuring that the next step—public consultations—will take place soon. “This $40 million bridge represents only about 1% of the total cost of the $4 billion Turcot reconstruction. It is also essentially the only part of this mega-project that is for cyclists and pedestrians, but in 2010, it was the

tersection of St. Jacques Street and Cavendish Blvd in NDG, crossing over the new CN train tracks and the new Highway 20. From there, a bike and pedestrian path would link to the Lachine Canal bike path, less than 1km from St. Jacques Street. An existing pedestrian bridge already crosses the Lachine canal here, near Irwin Street in the Southwest, providing easy access to Angrignon Park and metro station as well as to LaSalle. In French “Dalle” can mean “stepping stone” and that is what the name refers to. Currently, it is about an 8km bicycle ride from the bottom of Cavendish Blvd to Irwin Street, and cyclists must traverse some dangerous intersections to get there.

aged that an announcement on the Dalle-Parc project will be made soon as reported by Global News. While the Liberals have now said they are in favour of the Dalle-Parc, Gonzalez wants other Quebec political parties to commit to the plan. The Dalle-Parc bridge would begin near the in-

Give Dad a variety of vegetables

It’s the Father’s Day gift that shows you care!

I

s your dad more of a meat and potatoes man? Chances are he is. According to Men’s Journal, only 19% of men actually eat enough vegetables. And the one vegetable they are most likely to eat is the potato; it’s ranked the most popular vegetable by both men and women. But now cauliflower is gaining admiration; it’s robust and versatile, just like the potato, but very low in carbohydrates. We know that parents who eat healthy are more likely to have kids who follow suit, so adding more vegetables to the diet will not only benefit fathers, but perhaps their children too. We love our dads, so if they can’t seem to get past the potato, it’s time for a little encouragement. Potatoes do have some nutritionally flattering features- they’re a good source of vitamin C, B6, potassium and manganese. They also provide antioxidants that are believed to be associated with reducing the risk of chronic diseases. The problem with potatoes is that they are high-starch

12

www.mtltimes.ca

and not as nutrient-dense as other vegetables. This is compounded by the fact that potatoes are usually eaten without the skins which is where most of the nutrients and fibre are

By Natalie Lavers mtltimes.ca

concentrated. For many potato lovers out there, much of that nutrition goes straight into the compost and what’s left on the plate is a caloriedense, low-fibre food. While potatoes shouldn’t necessarily be banished, they shouldn’t be a staple food either. There is a plethora of health blogs online that can help you find some

satisfying spud swaps. By adding the term “paleo” or “low-carb” to any online recipe search you are bound to find something satisfying. Cauliflower is especially popular because its dense texture makes it very filling and therefore a worthy substitute. It’s also very low on the glycemic index and packs in even more of the nutrients found in potatoes without all the starch. You can try a cauliflower mash or while the grill is hot, cook up the cauliflower steaks featured here. Some other excellent sides to try are sweet potato salads, jicama fries or root vegetable mashes. Wishing you and your family a Happy and Healthy Father’s Day!

Cauliflower Steaks Ingredients: • 1 medium head of cauliflower • 2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar • 4 tbsp. olive oil • 2 tsp. whole grain Dijon mustard • 1 clove of garlic • Salt and pepper Directions: Slice your cauliflower approximately 1.5-2 cm thick. Mix all other ingredients in a small bowl and using a basting brush, cover one side of the cauliflower. Lay the covered slices down on the grill at medium-low heat and baste the other side. Cook each side for 6-7 minutes lid down ensuring that the barbecue temperature does not rise and checking on the steaks every few minutes. When they are soft enough to poke a fork in without much effort, it’s time to plate them and serve. June 16, 2018 •

reying seniors. Are we ready? As the rate of aging of the country’s population increases, Canada needs to invest more in home care to meet the needs of its elderly citizens. A 2016 census from Statistics Canada showed there were 5.9 million people aged 65 and older in the country. This number has already increased in the 2 years since the census. At the time this number was more than the country’s 5.8 million children 14 and younger. In this census Stats Canada found that there were 770,780 Canadians over the age of 85. This group increased nearly four times as fast as the entire population between 2011 and 2016. What are we doing to prepare? The Boomer ageing is here and we won’t accept “being placed” for our senior years. Is our Health care system keeping up? “We need to accelerate the pace of change in our health-care systems to build up those services in the home and in the community so people can live dignified lives in their older years,” said Danielle Martin, a family physician and a vice-president at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. A 2015 report from the CBC estimates that 2.4 million Canadians over 65 will require continuing care

www.mtltimes.ca

support, both paid and unpaid, by 2026. By 2046, that number will reach nearly 3.3 million. (Globe and Mail) To meet this increase a 2017 CBC report released last March found that the demand for nurses to provide continuing care to seniors in home, community, and facility living settings is projected to increase from just under 64,000 full-time jobs

By Donna Byrne mtltimes.ca

to 142,000 full-time jobs by 2035. Our health care system is still so centered on hospitals and “sick care”. Seniors want to stay home as much as possible. They don’t want to go to care facilities or their children telling them what to do. “We’ll get by with a little help from our friends” I think we should be preparing for an increase in paid caregivers in the community to provide supportive care and support staying healthy in our homes. We should use our

nurses to manage chronic disease and teach seniors to self-manage to stay out of hospitals. We can use fewer nurses to provide the teaching and use technology for them to do so. We don’t want to go from “sick care” in hospitals to “sick care” in communities. If nurses could order standard blood and other tests and review results, only abnormal findings would be passed to the doctors. After their review nurses and other health care providers could follow up with recommendations. Let’s move toward prevention and management with people taking charge of their own health! The issues not addressed with my dream system would be isolation and loneliness as people age. This too could be improved within a health care system that looks at the whole person. Paid caregivers could work in the community at centers with activities for seniors such as exercise groups, movie nights, cards nights, pub nights, and group dinners and on and on. A coordinating group could arrange paid for transportation to these late afternoon or early evening activities. This would all cost less than our very expensive “wait to be sick and spend days in hospitals” system. Am I dreaming? Comments, suggestions and ideas are welcome.

Movie review

Lessons in your home!

“We have patience galore!”

BEAST: And who really is it? By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

"Small town, big hell" is a Japanese saying which could well apply to the plot of this movie directed by Michael Pearce and set in a small community in England. Moll (Jessie Buckley) is 27-yearold, she sings in the church choir which is conducted by her mother Hilary (Geraldine James), works as a tourist guide, and apparently has no life of her own, since she is subjected to the firm authority of her mother. Her father has Alzheimer. The movie starts with a family reunion, and although the motive is Moll's birthday, she is not much-paid attention to, except for the much

older local police agent Clifford (Trystan Gravelle) a family friend who gives her a present and seems to have some sexual intentions toward the young woman that he would keep ambiguous. Obfuscated with the people in the party, Moll leaves for a club, meets a guy, drinks a lot, and early in the morning will meet Pascal (Johnny Flynn) a free-spirited guy who would show an interest in the young woman and with whom she would eventually fall in love, defying her family and most of the community as well. In the meantime, the whole community has been shocked by the murder of a young girl, precisely the night that Moll was out. Things will get worse for Moll and Pascal,

now living together, when the police come to arrest Pascal on suspicions of being the murderer of the missing girl. From that moment on tension will increase in the small community unveiling the notso-hidden prejudices and hatreds plaguing the isolated group of people. Moll and Pascal, two strange characters with some dark episodes in their past would get together, but their relationship would also be marked by what they are in the present. "Beast" is an engaging psychological thriller, not without some elements of implausibility, but it effectively conveys a message of uncertainty about what some people really are. Length: 107 min
