or years I have ranted about how we can be doing so much better by using Nurses to do what they are supposed to be doing. Let’s move toward a “health care system” and not “a sick care system” I came across a Gazette article in June 7th, 2016. “Quebec needs nurse practitioner clinics.” They looked to Ontario for examples of better and less expensive services saying specialized nurse practitioners cost the system approximately one third of what a general practitioner costs. I argue that all nurses with good clinical skills can assess the needs of individuals and use collective orders, which have been an option for years in Quebec,
to prescribe blood tests, antibiotics, treat minor injuries and drain an abscess. The list is much longer than this but you get the idea.
By Donna Byrne mtltimes.ca
Why then are we not using this option? Once tests are completed and
results are in and reviewed by the nurse only abnormal results should be screened by the doctor for a medical plan. Follow up and teaching can then be done by the Nurse. We would “need less doctors, not more” and everyone could be seen quickly instead of waiting months for an appointment. The care and plan would be less fragmented because one nurse would know the whole story and consult various health care providers accordingly. Once conditions and needs are identified by groups, various support systems can be developed to be sure diseases and conditions are well managed. Health care providers would focus on
teaching and help people learn to self-manage. This approach would be much less expensive and provide a higher quality of care. Another consistent theme on my list of rants “Take charge of your own health.” Imagine not needing to wait 12 hours in an emergency room for an antibiotic prescription for your child’s ear infection. Imagine not having to wait 3 months to have your ear unblocked. With collective orders a nurse can look after these problems within days. Instead of looking at these solutions we remain bogged down with our centralized, bureaucratic, doctor run model that is not working! Nurse clin-
ics can respond to the needs of those who do not have a family doctor for whom emergency rooms are their only access to the system. Non urgent cases represent a large percentage of emergency visits. What a waste of valuable resources! When will we wake up in our public sector? Fund these types of clinics! Instead the Health Minister’s idea is to support Family Medicine clinics operated by doctors. So far this has not improved our situation.Where’s this solution going? Nowhere fast! Unfortunately the public sector is missing the boat and we the consumers and tax payers suffer because of it.The good news is that private nurse clinics are surfacing in Quebec. One such clinic that I have been recently work-
11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale
MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn • July 7, 2018

Place Cartier opens new campus in Hudson
P Answer is online Saturday July 7 page 25
lace Cartier Adult Education Centre is opening a new campus in Hudson to offer English, Math, and Science high school courses, as well as conversational French courses. Starting on August 27, 2018, residents living west of the island of Montréal will be able to take a selection of high school courses in Hudson, at Westwood Junior High School, located at 2800 Rue du Bordelais, SaintLazare, QC J7T 3E3. These classes will be offered in the evening.
The campus will be the first to offer English high school courses to adults west of the island. Place Cartier Centre Director Myriam Rabbat says “We are very excited to offer residents the opportunity to complete their high school diploma, finish their CEGEP prerequisites, or improve their spoken French.” The courses offered in Hudson are specifically
geared for students who wish to either complete CEGEP prerequisites or complete their high school diploma. The main campus of Place Cartier located in Beaconsfield will continue to offer a full range of high school and language courses during the day and evening. Lester B. Pearson School Board is one of Quebec’s largest English language school boards.
The board oversees 37 elementary schools, 13 high schools, 4 Adult education centres, and 6 Vocational training centres, including a centre of expertise for RAC (CERAC) as designated by the Ministry of Education that is part of LBPSB’s Business Solutions Centre. The board’s territory stretches from Verdun through the West Island, and west to the Ontario border.
important to them; be it hobby, services or social. 4. Make random visits to the retirement home at various times of the day before the move to meet residents and staff as well as try the food and some of the activities offered. 5. Walk the building to get a feel for where everything is before you move and review activity schedules to plan ahead so you have an idea what your daily schedule can be like. 6. Allow as much time as possible before the move to prepare. If required; hire a Senior Move Manager or downsizing company to help with the coordination. 7. Meet with the move-in coordinator. They have done this many times and may have additional advice or help. They can help decide what will come from home and where it can be placed in the new apartment. 8. Do not schedule the
move-in for the weekend; try to move during the week when the community is fully staffed. 9. Inquire about a “Be Our Guest” program. Some communities provide furnished rooms for a few days at no charge to help the future resident get acclimated. 10.Be sure to complete the resident history questionnaires before moving in as it helps the staff in the building become even more involved with the new resident if they already know their history, likes and dislikes. When there is a move into a retirement home, the lack of familiarity with both the environment and the other residents can be quite intimidating.Very often, family members can feel guilty about placing loved ones into a senior residence. The reality is that a move will most likely be for the best. Please see ad next page.
10 Tips for a Smooth, Stress-Free Transition to a Retirement Home
By Matt Del Vecchio mtltimes.ca
Of the almost 5 million seniors age 65 and older in Canada, 7.1% live in care facilities. Of this amount, 4.5% live in nursing homes, chronic care, or long-term care hospitals and 2.6% live in residences for seniors. Wherever you’re loved one decides to go, moving into a retirement home or senior community can be stressful. Below are 10 tips to help with the transition. 1. Involve your loved one in the selection process if possible. Listen to their concerns and fears and then address them. Let them know they are NOT losing control. 2. Try to make sure everyone in the family is doing what is best for the loved one. 3. Choose a senior community that is a good match based on the senior’s needs and location. Try to pick a place that nurtures what is

s Canada finds itself dragged into a trade war with its largest trading partner, the USA, both countries are slapping tariffs on billions of dollars goods crossing the border. At the same time, US President Donald Trump is busy insulting our country and our Prime Minister. The cry has gone out on social media for economic nationalism, that is “buying Canadian” products and services. But how easy is this to do? The dynamic of CanadaUS relations can be compared to a mouse sharing a rowboat with an elephant; the US economy is more than 10 times the size of Canada’s. So the elephant usually gets its way unless the mouse plays very smart… Trump has Tweeted about Canada’s “large” trade surplus with the USA to justify initiating the trade war with tariffs on $16 billion worth of Canadian steel and alu-
minum. But like many of Trump’s bombastic claims, it is hard to find much evidence to corroborate this. According to Time, citing the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the USA had a $12.5 billion (USD) trade surplus for goods and services in 2016, exporting $320.1 billion to Canada and importing $307.6 billion. After being hit with steel and aluminum tariffs, the Canadian government reciprocated with $16.6 billion worth of tariffs on a wide range of US imports. By coincidence, most of these imports come from “red states” that voted Republican in 2016 to elect Trump. Another coincidence is that the symbol of the Republican party is an elephant, so did the mouse win round 1? Trade wars do not usually have winners and consumers on both sides of the border will soon feel the pain in terms of increased costs. Canadians
should expect to start paying more for pickles, chocolate, greeting cards, mayonnaise, lawnmowers, motorboats, and a plethora of other USmade goods. Car prices

are likely to increase in both countries. For patriotic consumers, it is easy to choose Canadian products--which are clearly marked--in the grocery section of your food store. Ditto for choosing

vacation destinations in Canada rather than in the USA; it is also easy to choose Canadian products in real estate, and perhaps in financial investments. Elsewhere in the economy, it can get messy in deciding if something is Canadian or American made. Is French’s ketchup-which uses Canadian tomatoes--more Canadian than Heinz, which uses US tomatoes? Both companies are US-owned but French’s is manufactured in Ontario and Heinz closed their Ontario plant down. Or should we instead buy President’s Choice ketchup made by a Canadian company using Canadian tomatoes? Most Canadian-made processed food contains at least some ingredients from the USA, so it is difficult to go “Trump-free” there. Canada and the US have interlinked economies with some 30,000 tractor trailers crossing the bor-
der each day. Much of this truck traffic is generated by the automobile industry where parts might cross and recross the border many times before being incorporated into a finished car rolling off the assembly line. This is because, today’s supply chains look like spiderwebs. Buying Canadian is about making a statement, and It will come at a cost, but still needs to be done. Canada is not alone; Mexico, China, and Europe also have their own trade disputes now with the USA. It is also strange that the elephant party, the Republicans, are now opposed to freer trade. When Trump became president, the party reversed its longstanding position in favour of freer trade. But with luck,Washington DC might be singing a different song on trade after the November midterm Congressional elections.

Just For Laughs - In Conversation with Gina Brillon

or Gina Brillon, comedy has been the ultimate career choice for her since she was a kid growing up in The Bronx. “I fell in love with comedy at the age of 14. I was watching such comedians as George Burns, George Carlin and George Lopez (the three Georges) on TV, and I became obsessed about being a comedian. I just knew it was in my blood,” said Brillon. Then it was no surprise that Brillon – and her twin sister – launched that career when they participated in a local stand-up comedy contest at the age of only 17. Although her sister decided to leave comedy to pursue her own career path (she later became a personal trainer), Brillon decided to stay along the comedy course, and for a rather unselfish reason. “Laughter makes people happy, and when you make people laugh, it’s really something. You don’t see them all upset anymore. That’s who I am; a person who likes to make people happy,” she said during a recent phone interview. With that goal in mind, Brillon established herself as a mainstay on the New York comedy scene. She has used her talents as a comedian, writer and actor in such comedy platforms as “Live at Gotham” on Comedy Central, “Chelsea Lately”,“Gotham Comedy Live”, “The View”, the CBS sitcom “Kevin Can Wait”, “The Fluffy Movie” with Gabriel Iglesias and her own stand-up comedy special “Pacifically Speaking”. As well, in 2012, Brillon became the first and only female and Latina to win NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity Showcase, which earned her a year-long holding deal with the network.

On the OFF-JFL front, comedians Dulce Sloan, Liza Treyger, Alonzo Bodden, Mamrie Hart and Matt Braunger have been chosen to helm the “Hosts with the Most” series, which runs from July 24 – 28 at Theatre St. Catherine. Comedy writer Eliot Glazer will be your host for the musical-comedy show “Eliot Glazer’s Haunting Renditions” at the Katacombes on July 28. And controversial Quebecois comedian Mike Ward will be staging an additional performance of his show “Infamous” – due to popular demand – on July 28 at the Salon Claude-Leveille of Place des Arts. And more live podcast tapings have been added to its already expanding line-up at the Hyatt Regency Montreal Hotel, including “Sh*t They Don’t Tell You” and “2 Drink Minimum” with Mike Ward and Pantelis (both on July 25); and “Off Book: The Improvised Musical”, “Homophilia”, and “Los Culturistas” (all three on July 28). platform of fitness and nutrition, especially in children. Q: Is that the platform you are competing on? A: Yes, we are required to have a platform and my platform will be towards healthy living; promoting an active lifestyle and reducing childhood and adult obesity. I feel that an active lifestyle should be strongly encouraged as there are many health and social benefits from maintaining one’s health and target weight. Almost everyone is capable of some form of activity and an active lifestyle is shown to reduce stress and the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke in adults. Also, for young people, activity promotes confidence and good muscle development. For these reasons, I think
healthy living is very important and should be encouraged as an important objective in life. I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to represent this platform should I be selected at the Miss World Canada Pageant. Q: What activities have you been involved with to prepare for the pageant? A: As part of my pageant activities, I am attending various social functions and charity fundraisers. I attended a fundraising breakfast for West Island Palliative Care residence, a BBQ dinner fundraiser for Angels of Mercy, and was thrilled to be driven at the Montreal Canada Day parade in a top down jeep provided by Des Sources Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Fiat. My current mission is to fundraise for the Children’s Wish Foun-
dation. You can see my events and fundraising activities by visiting my facebook web-page at: https://www.facebook.co m/missislandofmontrealworld2018/ Q: What does Miss World Canada do? A: For one, she goes on to represent Canada at the International Miss World pageant. She also will support various charities, initiatives and her platform during her year as the winner. Q: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know? A: It would be very nice if they would vote for me! The list of finalists competing for the Miss World Canada title will be visible for on-line voting the week of July 22 at: http://missworldcanada.ne t/2018-finalists/

et me introduce you to Clara, a local girl from Kirkland who will be one of the six or so representatives out of Quebec vying for the title Miss World Canada at a pageant to be held in Toronto a little later this month. Clara is a 23 year old graduate of John Rennie Sports Etude program, followed by studies at Vanier college and then University of Ottawa with a B.Comm, Marketing in progress. Simultaneously, Clara is attending Algonquin college, where she is on the Dean’s honour list, completing a diploma in Hotel and Tourism- the industry she plans to enter while completing her B. Comm. Q: It sounds like you have career plans in progress, why did you enter the pageant? A: I have always loved the pageant experience and would follow the American pageants when I was younger. It is, after all, a competition that demands you perform in a certain context, and calls upon the individual to get out of their comfort zone and have confidence and poise in a very public situation. Q: In this day and age of feminist movement, and women decrying sexual stereotyping with “Me Too”, how do you feel about posing as a beauty queen? A: I don’t really think one is related to the other. There is nothing wrong with wanting to present yourself in your best possible way and feel healthy and attractive. The movement and ‘Me too’ relates to women being used in an abusive way by someone more powerful than them, and I am definitely a supporter of those efforts to reduce sexual harassment. Q: The American pageant has recently announced it is doing away with the bathing suit portion of the pageant. Will you have to do a bathing suit competition and how do you feel about it? A: Yes, the Miss World Canada pageant still includes a bathing suit portion to the competition. It is certainly un-nerving, but so was dancing in a body-suit on stage when I was a dancer at BalletOuest. I think the idea is to present a fit healthy body and to carry yourself with confidence. I hope it will project my

While we may not be able to do much as individuals to change the world we can certainly do a great deal to protect ourselves from it and regain control of our well being, and hypnotherapy is designed to do exactly that by accessing and correcting the control panel, the subconscious mind, that is where the anxiety resides.

Complaints were made and a federal agent was quickly dispatched to investigate. “We were out birding very early on Wednesday morning when the agent

from Wildlife protection arrived,” birdwatcher Joel Coutu told The Times. “The work was being done by the Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) in a ditch where rare birds such as Virginia Rails have been sighted.” “The agent told us that the ADM had somehow received a special permit to do emergency work; this is strange because there was no apparent emergency like a bridge about to collapse. She also assured us that the work has now stopped and will not recommence.” In the past three years, the area around Technoparc has emerged as the primary bird watching spot on Montreal Island with over 180 species observed, including two endangered species (Least Bittern, Wood Thrush) nesting there. Coutu notes that other endangered species, such as ShortEared Owls, use Technoparc as an important stopover during migration period. “This area, including federal land and a golf course, is much bigger than Mount Royal Park. DeSousa, while obviously familiar with the Migratory Birds Convention Act, was on the defensive about his support for the Hubert Reeves Eco-Campus in Technoparc—seen by environmentalists as a major threat to wild bird populations. He was also on the defensive about his long-promised plans to create a nature park, le Parc des Sources, there. “For the correct answer, you would have to ask Luc Ferrandez, who is responsible for large parks on the Montreal Executive Committee,” said DeSousa in response to a question about the status of this
projected park. “My understanding is that a piece [of land] will be ceded to city as early as this fall. It is at top of Alfred Nobel [Blvd] and is 9-10 hectares now owned by Technoparc.” “Those 10 hectares are all water with dead trees standing in it,” mused Coutu after the meeting. “The only land he has set aside for the park is a 10 hectare marsh. And that is much less than one percent of the undeveloped land area around Technoparc. I think Mr DeSousa's park is just a mirage...”

Spectacular lightning show fills Montreal skies where many more are scrambling to find ways to stay cool. n Saturday June 30th, during late evening before Canada Day, the skies over Montreal lit up with a pre-'fireworks' display of its own. If you had a good view towards the South/Southwest you would have seen a spectacular lightning show one caused by the oncoming extreme heat and humidity we have been experiencing since last Friday. If you missed it, you can check out the short video capturing bursts of light, illuminating the clouds and making them

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca
is that the soundless
flashes of lightning seen here, were really coming from a thunderstorm somewhere up to 100 miles away. When a thunderstorm is that far away, the sound does not travel as far as the light - in fact, you can only really hear the thunder from approximately 10 to 15 miles away. But what we saw here made the clouds light up in a most remarkable way. Unfortunately it heralded the record-breaking heatwave - one where there are those who actually enjoy the high temperatures and humidity, but also one
sweating it too. In our stoic manner we head to swimming pools, air-conditioned shopping malls, movie theatres or even shaded terraces to cool off with a refreshing drink, or two. Summer has really just begun, but like this city, we like to do it big - with a lit-
tle of our ' je ne sais quoi' attitude thrown in. So keep cool and refreshed while enjoying the season to its fullest. Winter will inevitably arrive and the thermometers will dip and we will start shivering before we know it and complaining about the snow and ice.

The strawberry moon has emerged!
I
n Algonquin tradition, the full moon of June is known as the Strawberry Moon. It is so named because its appearance is believed to signal the peak time for picking this important berry. This year’s Strawberry Moon graced our sky this past Thursday and sure enough, Quebec strawberries have made their grand debut in stores. Though we are now seeing them more frequently throughout the whole summer, June and July is when they are most bountiful. There’s nothing like biting into a fresh Quebec strawberry straight from the basket (though you should wash it!), and the good news is, they’re so good for you.
As you’ve probably noticed, imported strawberries have nothing on our Quebec strawberries! They may be ample and sweet, but they are quite tasteless. The strawberries from the south are bred for some important characteristics like size, sweetness, and yield but taste just isn’t as much of a priority. Quebec strawberries are a deeper red, their texture draws you in, and they are full of that strawberry flavour that is missing from the imports! For those of us willing to hold out for fresh local strawberries, we can take comfort in knowing that the season is no longer so short; many farmers have started growing everbearing varieties. In contrast to the June-bearing ones, By Natalie Lavers these plants continue to produce more fruit mtltimes.ca throughout the summer, which is why you now see Strawberries are a good local strawberries in source of manganese, fo- stores well into Septemlate, potassium and vita- ber. min C. Strawberry Sorbet Makes for 4 small portions • 1 pint of strawberries (frozen) • ½ cup of coconut milk (cold) • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 3 tbsp of maple syrup Let the strawberries thaw for 5 minutes on the counter before starting. Using a high-power blender or a good food processor, add all ingredients and blend until smooth. The sorbet will be more similar to softserve style ice cream. Serve right away or let it harden slightly in the freezer for 20 minutes. Natalie Lavers is a health and wellness consultant in Montreal. A quartet of capsule show reviews from the jazz festival
T
oday (July 7) marks the final day of the 39th edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival. And although most of the 10-period of the festival was swathed in a blazing heatwave, that heat was remedied by a lot of cool music, whether it be jazz, blues, R&B,

world music, fusion or classic rock. I managed to see my share of shows during the festival, and here are capsule reviews of four shows that I consider to be my highlights for this year. DreamWorks Animation in Concert was a musical tribute to nearly 30 years of hit animated features that were produced by the DreamWorks studio, from “Shrek” to

“Kung Fu Panda” to “Madagascar” and so many more. Accompanied by a live symphony orchestra, the audience was taken on a fantastic journey on how original animation – and original musical scores – went hand in hand to contribute to the art of movie animation, whether it was thematic clip montages, or tributes to a selection of six separate DreamWorks features (which were shown on a giant screen suspended above the stage). The end result was so dynamic, that at times, I had to glance down from the screen to realize that a live orchestra was playing the musical scores, and not a perfect movie theatre sound system. A real treat for families and animation buffs alike. George Thorogood and the Destroyers delivered what they promised to the full house that showed up that night to Salle Wilfrid Pelletier: an evening of high-octane, kick-ass rock music. Thorogood delivered that in droves, and it was quite evident with the loud, enthusiastic reactions he got from the crowd with every song he played, such as “Who Do You Love?”,
“Ain’t Going Home Tonight” and of course, “Bad to the Bone”. After he performed another of his signature tunes, “One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer”, Thorogood was given the festival’s B.B. King Award for his lifetime achievement in music. “No one rocks the blues better than George Thorogood,” said jazz festival co-founder Andre Menard, who presented the award to him during the show. Boz Scaggs has been writing and performing music for over 40 years,
George Thorogood
and after his show on July 2, proves that he doesn’t plan to slow down any time soon. Scaggs -- with his familiar twangy voice - and his band provided a solid, entertaining two hours filled with new songs from an upcoming album (watch out for “Last Tango on 16th Street”), songs that inspired him, and a selection of his greatest hits (including “Lowdown”,“Jojo” and of course “Lido Shuffle”). Watching the Preservation Hall Jazz Band perform on July 3 was almost like taking a trip to the

on every member of the audience. Also, kudos to the three opening acts I saw during the George Thorogood, Boz Scaggs and Preservation Hall Jazz Band shows, who really distinguished themselves respectively: Montrealer Jordan Officer proved why he is one of the best guitar stylists around, and how he masters that instrument with lightning speed no matter what type of music he plays, whether it be blues, classic rock or western swing. Polly Gibbons from the U.K. gave a sultry set of jazz standards and original tunes; topped off with her sense of humour, she city where the roots of is almost like jazz music’s jazz were planted: New answer to Adele.
