such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease. In part, this is because the information available about mental health is fragmented but mostly it is because people do not want to talk about mental illness.

What we are hearing in the news these days is shocking and very scary.

We deal with some families in our home care business that are struggling to cope with family members who have a mental illness.There is not much help out there and people are grasping trying to do what they can without the expertise to do so. Mental illness falls be-

Bixi to Offer Electric Bikes; Pilot Project Starts August

EABs are legal on bike paths and most streets; adults require no special driving license, but the operator must be wearing a helmet.Youths aged 14-17 do need a 6D scooter license, while youths under age 14 are not allowed at all to drive an EAB. omedian and writer Scott Thompson – throughout his time as a member of the legendary Canadian sketch comedy group “The Kids in the Hall”, which gained a massive cult following thanks to their sketch series that aired on CBC, CBS and HBO from 1989 to 1995 – will always be remembered for his repertoire of characters that he brought to life on the show, whether it be Fran the unflappable housewife, diva-esque fashion model Francesa Fiore, Cathy the office secretary, or businessman Danny Husk.

Just For Laughs - Talking comedy with Todd Glass

odd Glass made his Just For Laughs debut in 1992, during the festival’s 10th anniversary edition, as a “mobile comedian”.

Glass had a makeshift comedy club that he operated out of the back of a Jeep pickup truck, complete with a fold out comedy club brick wall backdrop. During his stint in Montreal that year, Glass would take his mobile comedy club around the city (I had the chance to see him perform outside the Rialto Theatre with his mobile comedy get up) and would do his comedy act to whoever gathered around his truck/club.

“I started doing the mobile comedian bit half as a joke. My truck had a folddown brick wall, a stage, speakers, a spotlight and a generator mounted on the front of the truck to power up the P.A. system.

As well, I had a cordless microphone so I could work around the audience,” said Glass during an interview with him in the quiet, deserted lobby of the Hyatt Hotel.“Bruce Hills saw me do the act in Irvine, California and wanted me to bring it to Montreal, and made it very easy for me to bring the act to Just For Laughs.

I just set myself up all over the city and I was having a great time. Fortunately, these days I am no longer performing from the back of a Jeep pick-up truck.”

The Philadelphia native, who launched his career as a comedian 36 years ago when he was only 18, has toured with the likes of Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan and David Cross and has done several stand-up specials on cable (including his most recent special “Act Happy”, which aired on Netflix).

This time, the back of a pick-up truck is not his stage, but instead it’s the

MainLine Theatre on St. Laurent Boulevard, where he is performing his solo stand-up show throughout this week.

Glass is a very serious student of comedy and what makes people laugh, and is quite passionate when he talks about his craft (which was quite evident during our conversation). “When I say what’s on my mind, people think it has to be deep, and it can be. But what’s great about comedy is that you hear people talking about their depression, alcoholism or just about everything,” he said.“However, some people are just sillier when they are onstage. I like to learn by watching other comedians like Rory Scovell as he gets his silly juices going. What makes you laugh, what makes you giggle and bringing that onto the stage is what stand-up comedy is all about.”

“And loving stand-up certainly helps. I genuinely love it now as much as I did when I started in the business 36 years ago,” he added.

Glass is a firm believer that anyone who asserts that comedy these days is not what it used to be 20 or 30 years ago is quite wrong. “If you think comedy is not what it’s used to be, then I think you are through being as great as you can possibly be as a comedian because you’re wrong. Here’s a fact: comedy is getting better and better,” he said. “It’s like a litmus test on absurdity.”

“When I was 17, I got tired of hearing guys like (veteran comedian and TV host) Steve Allen talk about nothing but how comedy was over, and it really bothered me. I felt like telling him to just shut up. On the other hand, I heard legendary comedians like Alan King and Don Rickles say in interviews that there has always been good and bad comedy, and it will be that way until time dies. And I always wanted to thank

them for saying that,” he added.

A major attribute to Glass’ longevity in the comedy world is his open mindedness to subsequent generations of younger comics, and how he can be a role model to them, and in turn be inspired by them.

“My genuine belief that comedy is still great helps me to at least stay on my game and admire new generations of comedians.

It’s comedians like Chelsea Peretti and Rory Scovell who really moti-

vate me to tap into a sillier part of me. There are times when I am in a room and when I see a comedian I like, I will turn to my friend who is with me at the time and tell them ‘Watch this guy!

Watch this girl! They’re really funny. Watch them!’,” he said.

“You really have to be immersed and be out there checking out what’s going on in the comedy world. When I get into a town the night before a gig, I find out if there is an open mic night around

taking place. I want to hang out and talk with other comedians because where else am I going to have a better time than in a comedy club?”

As well as his week-long solo gig at the MainLine, Glass will also do a live taping of his podcast “The Todd Glass Show” on July 27 at the Hyatt Hotel.

Rated as the #1 podcast by the Podcasters Association of America since it went on the air in 2011, he asserts that a lot of what goes on during his podcast filters into his stand-up act.

“I am going to have Gary Gulman as my guest, as well as a live band that will play some slinky music as the people are walking in,” he said. “We will take the room that we will be doing the podcast in and darken it up, and get it as funky and cozy as we can.

We’re going to have a good time with all the bells and whistles involved. It will basically give me the chance for some good talking and spend an hour being silly with another comedian.”

Just For Laughs: Talking stand-up with Katherine Ryan

F

or comedian Katherine Ryan, comedy was always something that she really valued throughout her life.

“My dad came from an Irish background, and he always enjoyed telling humorous stories with the rest of the family. We also enjoyed telling funny stories to each other at the dinner table, which was quite engaging. I even liked watching ‘The Golden Girls’ with my grandmother,” she said during a recent phone interview.

Ryan, a native of Sarnia, Ontario, always had that need to have a laugh and make people laugh; however, when she was in school, having a sense of

humour was not the way to make new friends. “My schoolmates always regarded me as being rather strange. They thought comedy was sort of a detriment towards having a social life.”

When she moved to Toronto, where she studied city planning at Ryerson University, Katherine found out that there was much easier access to the comedy world. While working with the Hooters restaurant chain to train waitresses and help set up new branches, she decided to try her luck at an amateur night at Yuk Yuk’s in downtown Toronto.

Not only did she find developing herself as a stand-up comic a means of personal entertainment, but it had other benefits as well. “It was there that I discovered that having a sense of humour can make you feel quite useful and engaging.

In a way, you feel that you have joined a like-minded community,” she said.

In the summer of 2007, after graduating from Ryerson – and continuing her Hooters corporate job – Katherine decided to follow her thenboyfriend to England because he wanted to spend some time exploring London. “I initially tried it for a month. Then it turned out to be three months, then six months, then a year. After that, I decided to stay,” she said.

While she was working at an office job in London, Katherine made the decision to give stand-up comedy another try. And what she discovered was a whole new world when it came to how British comedians approached their brand of humour, and the audiences they were set to entertain.

“The British love pop culture, especially TV and celebrities, and its comedians are influenced not only by their peers, but also by the culture and the politics in the UK. They are always interested what I had to say about these topics, especially because I am an out-

She even got the chance to be the opening act for Stewart Francis, a Canadian comic who resides in Britain, during one of his tours.

From there, Katherine became a widely-seen figure in the British comedy scene, whether it be as a comedian, actress, writer or presenter (emcee) on a variety of British television panel shows, sitcoms, comedy specials and series. In 2016, she embarked on her own cross-UK tour called “Kathbum”, which evolved into her own Netflix special “Katherine Ryan: In Trouble” the following year.

here was a time when people would pay steep prices for a taste of melon. Around the turn of the century, the Montreal Melon is said to have been sold in New York City for $1 per slice, what would now be the equivalent of about $24 today. Considered one of the top delicacies of the world at its time, this melon was a whopping 20 pounds and was valued for its texture and special nutmeg flavour. The heyday of the Montreal melon, however, was short lived, the farms were bought by developers and the sensitive melon was not robust enough to be grown on industrial farms. Modern technology has vastly improved the availability of melons and this is a good thing since what has remained the same is a hunger and thirst for these juicy and healthy fruits.

The watermelon was once enjoyed only in summer months and many of us can remember a time when eating it involved some oral agility- sucking the flesh of the melon while allowing the seeds to stay in the mouth was a skill that we were all motivated to learn quickly. Increasingly, we see the yellow melon with its mellow honeyed flavour, the intensely sweet sugar baby melon and cantaloupe-like hami melon with its sweet and crisp flesh. Even the Montreal melon has been revived but interest in this melon ebbs and flows and many farmers have given up on growing this delicate crop.

Local melons always taste best, so summer is the

time to enjoy this hydrating and nutritious treat.

When I first heard of putting watermelon in gazpacho, I was reluctant but then delighted after tasting it; the melon adds a subtle sweetness to the soup that balances out the flavours.

Watermelon Gazpacho Serves 4 appetizer-size bowls

• 3 medium tomatoes • 1 small red onion • ½ English cucumber • 1 cup of watermelon • 1 small clove of garlic • 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar • ½ tsp of green Tabasco • Sauce or 1/2 chilli pepper • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp pepper • Juice of ½ lime • Fresh oregano (for garnishing) • Olive oil

Directions:

Throw all ingredients in a blender and on a low setting, blend until you have an even consistency.

Chill and serve garnished with oregano a drizzle of olive oil on each bowl.

Vinho Verde the ultimate summer wine

Few wines symbolize summer quite like Vinho Verde. These refreshing, young wines are fun, simple to drink and the perfect companion for the outdoors in the sun.

They’re also quite affordable. The Vinho Verde selection at the SAQ is under $22 a bottle which makes them accessible for every budget. These are wines of pleasure that serve their purpose perfectly, to enjoy the playful nature of summer.

Made in Portugal, Vinho

Verde literally means “green wine” in Portuguese and its name implies that the wine has to be drunk in its youth when the wine is alive.

Even though it’s not carbonated, as a result of their youth Vinho Verde’s can have a slight effervescent quality ( frizzante) that accentuates the wine’s refreshing acidity.

For some novice wine lovers, drinking a glass of Vinho Verde can evoque memories of quenching down a lemonade.

Vinho Verde region has a beautiful historical precedence.WIth 22 centuries of winemaking tradition under the belt, winegrowing goes back to the time of Pliny, the Roman philosopher. In addition, Vinho Verde was one of the first Portuguese wines to be exported in European markets. Finally, the region was delimited in 1908.

The region the wine comes from is one of Portugal's largest, and the landscape where it grows is lush and green, located right near the Atlantic ocean. It actually conjures images of Ireland Those oceanic breezes assist in the development of the bright fruit that’s used to make this refreshing wine, and it’s the ideal representation of the place it’s made, the perfect wine for the lake.

Composed of nine subregions in the Douro Valley, each with a particular microclimates but granitic soils being the common denominator, the Vinho Verde wine region begins right below the Portuguese-Spanish border, and continues all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, where it encounters the city of Port.Vinho Verde is humid rainy, as two rivers pass through it, the Douro and Minho.

Almost of all Vinho Verde bottlings are a blend of white grapes, native to Portugal, but there are two majority varieties that producers recognize to have more potential than others: Alvarinho and Loureiro.Albarinho is

Sun Youth offers children ages 5 to 12 a fun and educational day camp, and youth ages 8 to 17 the chance to join the organization’s football or basketball teams while supporting their education.

Annually, more than 600 children take part in the Sun Youth sports programs.

At a session of said Court, held in the City of Kalamazoo, County of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan PRESENT: THE HONORABLE Circuit Court Judge

This matter having come to be heard pursuant to Plaintiff s Ex-Parte Motion for Substituted Service, and the Court being fully advised in the premises; NOW THEREFORE IT IS ORDERED AND ADWDGED that service of process in this action may be made upon the Defendants, THOMAS B. EWALEIFO and ROYAL AND SON, by mailing a copy of the Complaint, Summons, Demand for Trial and this Order to the Defendants, THOMAS B. EWALEIFO and ROYAL AND SON, at their last known address by way of regular mail and certified mail, return receipt requested, to wit: THOMAS B. EWALEIFO, at his last known address, to wit: 8631 Rue Basswood, Quebec, Canada PQ H8Yl S8 and ROYAL AND SON, at their last known address, to wit: 7449 Rue Saint-Hubert, Montreal Canada PQ H2R2N5. Proof of Service for these mailings shall be filed with the court by The Sam Bernstein Law Firm.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that notice be given by posting, for a period of three weeks, this Order in the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court by Plaintiff who shall file a proof of said posting with the Court.

IT IS FURTHER ORDERED THAT this Order shall be published in the Montreal Times once each week for a period of three consecutive weeks with proof of said publication to be filed with the Court by the Sam Bernstein Law Firm.

EWALEIFO, on January 12, 2016 causing injuries and damages to Plaintiff RHONDA A. CODY, and that Defendant, ROYAL AND SON was the owner of the vehicle Defendant,THOMAS B. EWALEIFO was driving.
