Lyme disease on the rise in Canada

e are hearing so much about Lyme disease now that I thought I should get a better look at what’s happening. The number of cases of Lyme disease in Canada has increased ten times in less than 10 years thanks to tick bites and ticks moving north. As Reid Fiest reports, it no longer matters where you live in the country, ticks have no boundaries. There are more ticks in more parts of Canada now. Experts believe that this could lead to more cases of Lyme Disease. “What we’re seeing is definitely a range expan-

sion. This is not a problem that’s getting smaller, it’s tending to get larger in terms of the range of the

of Canada who specializes in ticks. Around 20 per cent of blacklegged ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Don’t think that if you are bitten you have the disease. Researchers are studying where these Lyme carrying ticks are so you should remove the tick and place it in a small sealed container. heal. Clean the skin well with soap and water and wash hands thoroughly. Call 811 for advice about whether or not to see a doctor right away. Lyme disease symptoms usually appear between 3 and 30 days after the bite of an infected tick. Redness caused by Lyme disease. © Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The most common symptom is reddening of the skin. This symptom is visible in 70% to 80% of infection cases. The rash

spreads rapidly day by day, extending over 5 centimeters, and can be shaped like a ring or a target. Other symptoms may accompany this redness: fever, fatigue, headache, neck stiffness, muscle and joint pain. There were 1,479 cases across Canada in 2017, a “significant national increase” of nearly 50 per cent since the year before. Although in the 1990s, ticks were only found on a tiny peninsula in Ontario, blacklegged ticks have since expanded

their reach across most provinces. More ticks means more bites and therefore more Lyme Disease diagnosis. The best way to prevent tick-borne disease is to not get bitten. When you are in a wooded area that might have ticks, stay in the middle of the trail. The bugs can’t jump onto you, they only grab on if you brush against them. Wear long sleeves, light colored clothing with everything tucked in. You should also wear a bug repellant containing DEET.

In order to help them, Sun Youth distributed new clothing in adult sizes on Augus14th and 15th. By the end of this annual operation, over 3600 people shared some 18,000 pieces of clothing. This represents a considerable increase over last year as in 2017, 2200 were assisted by Sun Youth in this manner. For Sun Youth, taking care of parents means contributing to a better future for the whole family. The organization can count on the gener-

Catch & release program for feral cats Veterinary hospital shows leadership

By John Symon mtltimes.ca

a South Shore veterinary hospital, is showing how “Catch & Release” (C&R) programs can lead to better lives for felines. “We ask the person who brings the cat here to pay $75 for a cage rental,” explains MarieÈve Vaillancourt, the head veterinarian. “Then we do a blood test on the cat, checking for feline AIDS and leukemia. We vaccinate against rabies, spay the cat and treat it against parasites. After that, we release the cat back where it was found. Or, in the case of cats to be adopted, we also provide

dental treatment!” While some other groups are also doing C&R, they are not necessarily providing all of these treatments says Vaillancourt. She sees hers program as a way of controlling the population of stray and feral cats, while reducing the prevalence of feline diseases. Over the past two years or so,Vaillancourt estimates having released 20 cats back into their environment. The cats treated by Passion Compassion are released back into their environment are marked with a slight cut on their ear. They are also fitted with a microchip to track their location. “For kittens raised at Passion Compassion, we can transform them from feral into sociable creatures for our adoption programs. We have six that need adoption now and once we had 11 kittens to be adopted at the same time. Since our program started two-and-ahalf years ago, we have had some 60 such cats adopted.” “When people adopt our cats, the technician spends a full hour with them, explaining about health issues such as urine problems. Our technician

also explains how to play with cats so as to reduce their aggressiveness. Visitors are invariably charmed by our cats, which make amazing pets. Having spent time here, they are used to chaos, noise, and even dogs.” “But this costs us money: $650 for a male cat and $750 for a female. The wild side of Carigan

ach wine region of the world has their flagship grape. For Argentina, it is Malbec. Tuscany has their beloved Sangiovese and Burgundy will not be the same if they did not had Pinot Noir. In Roussillon, it is all about Carignan. Slowly but surely, the grape is making a strong comeback in the International wine scene. I was in Rousillon, at the end of May and I had chance to

familiarize myself with the many nuances of this Catalan grape. Roussillon is blessed to have old vines of Carignan well adapted to their mineral soils. So much the grape is entrenched into Roussillon wine culture,

by law, is the principal variety in the palette of Côte du Roussillon appellations. Carignan yields structured and powerful wines with predominant notes of ripe red fruit when young and evolving towards the floral and animal side with age.

Old Carignan vines at Domaine Lafage

For centuries, the true colours of carignan, and its true potential, were completely ignored; it into the high-volume vat along with everything else. Then, in the late 20th century, as the world wine drinkers were turning away from quantity to

quality, many Roussillon producers decided to get with the times. They took out high yielding vines and planted more Carignan. The lesson that they learned was that low yields of carignan would make wines of better quality, and that letting carignan hang on the vine until was fully ripe was the best way to bring out its unique flavor profile. With proper handling, carignan can go from the grape making dark, dull wine to a grape that produces wine full of cherries and berries in youth and that takes on characteristics of earth, truffles, barnyard, licorice, and spice with a few years of age. The kicker is that , fully ripe carignan has a great capacity to retain very good acid levels. However, Carignan has its own set of drawbacks. It is a late ripener and has a predilection for warm and dry climates. Otherwise, it will suffer from powdery and downy mildew. It is a perfect fit for the mediterranean climate of the Roussillonhot summers, mild winters and autumns. The region has as well numerous and frequent winds which gives a natural protection against pests and

diseases such as the mildew mentioned above. In fact, due to this favorable environment, Roussillon is the premier region for Organic and Biodynamic viticulture In wine, location is everything. This truism specifically applies to Carignan, where it will yield different results according from where is grown. In the Aspres sub region , between Perpignan and Spain, Carignan will yield highly aromatic mineral and floral wines. Aspres Terroir can be characterized by clay and gravel quartz, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

Some Cuvees of Domaine Ferrer Ribiere

In their wines, Domaine Ferrer Ribiere represents well the Aspres terroir. Their cuvee Empreinte du Temps 2015 ( 140+ year old Carignan) stunned me with its dry blood, iron and red currant fruit with a stream of dry rose and violet petals. Fresh, and fluid, with cashmere tannins and an aerial structure, and an elegant finish.

Equally stunning is their cuvee Centenaire 2014 ( 100+ year old Carignan). Different and thought provoking with notes of graphite, asphalt and dry black fruits. Austere with angular tannins and a powerful expression of minerality. Legendary wine.

sentative of this style is the Domaine Lafage Carignan Cayrol Vieilles Vignes 2015 which shows the generous animal and spicy side of Carignan around those parts .It displays aromas of dry peperoncino, with Tuscan leather undertones. It has a polished texture and a enticing fresh acidity. For me the apex expression of the Carignan was found in a parcel of producer Mas Amiel. Vol de Nuit 2014 is a pure breed Carignan 100+ years old from the St-Eugene parcel. The terroir here is pure black schist which lends the wine the most purist display of Jean-Marc Lafage Carignan. Very perfumed crafts singular Carignan with dry petal flowers, cuvees in his Domaine spices and game notes.. Lafage estate Very smoky. will want to put the muscle on slack by bringing the two ends closer to each other. With your fingertips, press the muscle in toward itself from the ends. This signals the neuromuscular system to turn off the muscle. This is a tricky skill with neck muscles because it is more difficult to find the ends of the muscles. Repositioning- Another way to put the muscle on slack and send those deactivation signals is by gently moving other structures around the locked-up muscle. If you have a nasty 'crick in the neck', for example, one end of the affected muscle attaches to the shoulder blade. So, you can gently press the shoulder blade upward, toward the neck, to put it on slack. Strain, Counter-StrainThis is the third technique that most health practitioners could be using to relieve spasms. When your neck is in spasm, you will apply a slight, gentle resistance force in the opposite direction of the spasm, and then stretch the muscle in the direction that it was originally tight. It will stretch farther and loosen up. If you practice these, you will eventually be able to use them very quickly to stop spasms. When you are proficient at them, you can also help others to relieve their pain and tension. f your neck feels tense or painful, your neck muscles may be locked up in a spasm. A neck muscle spasm occurs when the cervical muscles are over stimulated. Essentially, they won't turn off. A spasm can occur when a muscle is held in the same position for a long time. Or a muscle can be made to do repetitive movements. So, it is being trained to work extra hard at one activity. The neck may be affected by the shoulder and upper back muscles, so it is best to treat all of the upper-body muscles if you want to take strain off the neck. Natural treatment secrets based in osteopathy. There are natural remedies that most doctors and health practitioners don't practice. But they can help you get instant relief, stop the muscle from its spasm, and prevent your neck from future spasms. They originate in osteopathic medicine schools. However, the training in these techniques is minimal, and the application is becoming a lost art. Who is practicing these simple, natural techniques in the wellness and medical professions? (Answer: Hardly anyone!) * Positional Release- With the following positional release techniques, you will deactivate the muscle in spasm. It can be done with one of two ways: Muscle Shortening- Identify the muscle which is in spasm. Then find its end points, where the muscle attaches to the bone. You

Time for A Skin Care Change? By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

Have you been thinking about changing your skin care routine? Are you starting to realize that maybe, just maybe the creams and lotions and soaps you have been using might not be the absolute best for your skin? Doctors and dermatologists are doing their very best to help us but since they themselves are inundated with the latest and the best, I am sure it is an overwhelming situation. Companies change their recipes. You may have experienced a change in a product that you used to love, but now it just does not feel the same. Take Burt’s Bees as an example. Burt started selling amazing natural pure and delicious honey. He then got involved in developing other natural skin care products and almost overnight he became famous. A long saga ensued and eventually Burt’s Bees were bought out by Clorox. Most consumers

16

www.mtltimes.ca

were unaware of the changes in ownership. After all, it happens all the time and is not always a lingering news story on Facebook. Change happens. Any transition allows companies leeway in time to make label changes. It was well over a year before I witnessed the first label change on a Burt’s Bee lotion, at the pharmacy counter. The label was quite different from the original. Need I say more. If you are ready for change, it need not cost you a lot of money either. A consumer may spend $120.00 on a face cream but that does mean that a very similar one could exit under a different name for $40.00. Different packaging. Clever marketing. While I might avoid a cream at the Dollar Store, I would also not buy one at a high-end spa for $300.00. Do you ever remember a parent or a grandparent making their own skin care.? If your heritage is European the answer is probably yes. Good natural skin care has been around for centuries. But here in the

western culture we Baby Boomers, Gen X, Xennials, Millennials, are over 70 years into new technological advances in cosmetics. This does not necessarily make it a good thing. Take the Plunge Listen to history. How did man/woman nourish the skin? How did one maintain a healthy complexion? Honey is good. Olive oil, coconut and shea are good. Charcoal, clay and salts are good. Avocado, frankincense, lavender are good. The pure, unadulterated, of course. Where to Begin? A good soap and a good moisturizer. Natural and handmade. Call us or visit our shop or at a show-onthe-road. We will be pleased to advise you. We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. Visit our online store: natural.ca. Another win for Coach Earl De La Perralle!

aturday, August 11th was the first home game for the Sun Youth Midget Football team and the Hornets were battling an old adversary: the Saint-Leonard Cougars. The emotion was high as this particular day was chosen to honour the cofounder of Sun Youth, the late Earl De La Perralle, who sadly passed away on June 19th at 73. Putting rivalries aside for a moment, the President of the Quebec Midget Football League (QMFL) Renzo Fraraccio, also involved with SaintLeonard's Cougars, gave an inspirational speech to the players just before kick-off, calling for a moment of silence in memory of Sun Youth's and the League's mentor, a man who gave so much for amateur sports in Quebec. Fraraccio announced that the 2018 QMFL Season would be dedicated to Earl De La Perralle's memory, with players of all teams sporting a sticker on their helmets. Earl De La Perralle was probably watching over the players he cared so much for as the Hornets defeated the Cougars 32 to 15. Senator Larry Smith commented on Twitter: " This past Saturday was a wonderful football game and event to celebrate Earl’s contribution to the
