Montreal Contests Order to Bury St Pierre River By: John Symon / mtltimes.ca

MONTREAL - Montreal is appealing a court order to bury the last vestige of the St. Pierre River that still runs above ground on Meadowbrook Golf Course in the borough of Lachine. The order results from this stream being contaminated with sewage from improperly connected pipes upstream in Cote St Luc and Montreal West. Formerly this stream flowed some 15km, first west from Mount Royal to Lachine, and from there east to the Old Port. Today a mere 200 metres of the stream still www.mtltimes.ca

flows above ground; the other 99 percent of the stream has been channeled into sewers. A lake 5 kilometres long (Lac St-Pierre) was also once part of this waterway. Historically, this was a very important stream for Natives and for early colonists in Montreal because it afforded a way for canoes to bypass the treacherous Lachine Rapids. Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the founder of Montreal, also first stepped ashore onto Montreal Island beside where the St. Pierre River joins the St. Lawrence.

The Times also reached out to Montreal West mayor Beny Massela but did not hear back by deadline. “I do NOT support covering the St Pierre on Meadowbrook as it is historical but also for its ecological value,” local environmentalist Louise Chênevert emailed The Times. “Water attracts amphibians as frogs. Insects breed, which attract birds and bats. It is a source of drinking water (although presently unclean) for mammals...” Chênevert attended a film projection last week about “Lost Rivers” that have been channeled underground, such as the St. Pierre River. Around the world, such rivers are now being restored as surface-flowing streams. There are similar plans for downstream portions of the St. Pierre River as part of the Turcot Highway reconstruction project. This underground St. Pierre River seems to have achieved cult status fame: adventurer Andrew Emond has written fascinating articles about his attempts to follow the stream underground from Meadowbrook Golf Course toward Place d'Youville in Old Montreal. This reporter has written articles suggesting that the 4

former Iroquois village of Hochelaga—as described by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535—was on the St. Pierre River near Meadowbrook Golf Course. Old maps, Cartier's written accounts, and botany feature among the evidence. Chênevert is also organizing an August 26 bicycle ride to follow the approximate path of the St. Pierre River. Her 30km ride starts from Richard Schwartz Park in Côte St-Luc at 9:00 on Sunday and is free for participants. “Join Danielle Plamondon, featured in the film Lost Rivers to discover what lays underground and its ecological impacts,” reads a description on Eventbrite. “Louise Chênevert, will discuss its value to First Nations' culture and its trade history.” “This is a one-way, bilingual, guided bicycle ride covering history, culture, urban planning, and environmental issues. There will be several stops including one for lunch. Please bring your own lunch and water.” More information at the Facebook page “Balade de la Rivière - st Pierre - River Ride” or email: riviere.st.pierre@gmail.com

Montreal and Toronto Call for Handgun and Assault Weapons Ban By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

MONTREAL - On July 22nd, after two people were killed and thirteen others injured when a gunman opened ďŹ re on Danforth Avenue in the Greektown district of Toronto, Toronto City Council adopted a motion just two days later, calling on the Federal government to ban all privately owned handguns and assault weapons www.mtltimes.ca

- and on the Ontario Provincial government to ban the sale of ammunition in the city. And now the City of Montreal will join them with its own motion, also calling for a nationwide ban on handguns and assault weapons.

NEWS

Firearms seizure - Photo: RCMP On Monday August 20th, the Chair of the Public Safety Commission, Alex Norris, will put forth the motion at a Montreal City Council meeting, requesting the Federal government also reinforce Bill C-71's gun control legislation by prohibiting weapons which are now legally available for private possession. Mayor Valerie Plante supports the motion and if it is approved, it could have a significant influence on the Trudeau government to include the bans in the Bill, which is now before Parliament and a priority on the legislative agenda for this autumn. Montreal is no stranger to gun violence, with the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique massacre and the 1992 Concordia University and 2006 Dawson College shootings. On a Provincial level in Ontario, Premier Doug Ford appears to have taken another stance on the matter, rebuffing the motion put forth by Toronto's City Council, stating at the beginning of August that 'there are many legal and responsible handgun owners.' Federally, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several ministers in his cabinet have not closed the doors on the idea of the bans, stating to reporters while in Frederic6

ton, NB last Sunday - where another gunman, with a valid firearms license, opened fire killing two police officers and two civilians, “We were pleased to put forward gun legislation that is going to make our communities safer. Do we need to take further steps? Do we need to go a little further? These are things we are talking to Canadians about, we’re talking with experts about and that we are reflecting on.” Next Tuesday August 21st, the government will be holding a 3 day Federal cabinet retreat in Nanaimo, BC and the issue of gun control is expected to be debated. Although Canada has far less deaths caused by guns than in the United States (one is more likely to be shot to death in the US than to die in a car accident in Canada) we continue to see a rise in gun related deaths. There are many voices being heard across Canada saying it is time to bring forth stricter legislation in order to achieve the goal of securing the safety of all Canadians. Where do you stand on this issue? Are Canada's gun control laws as they stand now sufficient - or are they not enough? www.mtltimes.ca

5 tips to help you save cellphone data

TECH - Running out of data easily makes it into the top 10 list of modern-day problems. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some fast and easy ways to conserve data without infringing on your regular online activities:

3. Restrict apps to Wi-Fi. Not all apps need to run on data all the time. You can restrict apps like Candy Crush, Camera, Notes and the like to Wi-Fi usage only.

Annual Ken Reed Golf Tournament Raises Funds for OBM

COMMUNITY - 114 golfers braved the scorching heat on Monday August 6 and teed-off at the Beaconsfield Golf Club in Pointe-Claire in support of the Old Brewery Mission’s 15th Annual Ken Reed Golf Tournament, presented by The Tenaquip Foundation. In addition to being sold out, the event raised a record $258,000 to help end chronic homelessness in Montreal. Matthew Pearce, CEO of the Old Brewery Mission, says the funds will go beyond providing nutritious meals and a safe place to sleep for homeless men and women. “The problem with traditional shelters is that they end up facilitating homelessness,” says Pearce. “We need to challenge the status quo and work together to provide complementary services that span from homelessness prevention to affordable, permanent housing with supports for those who need it most.” The tournament’s chairman and co-founder, Jim Ross, who kicked off the evening ceremony by playing the bagpipes, says he is inspired by the Reed family’s continued compassion and generosity towards fellow Montrealers in need. “We owe the success of this special

www.mtltimes.ca

event to the late Ken Reed and his family, who carry on his legacy year after year,” he remarks. “They never lost sight of his commitment to the homeless men and women he saw lined up outside the Old Brewery Mission on his way to work. Their continued support is truly remarkable.” About the Old Brewery Mission Established in Montreal since 1889, the Old Brewery Mission is the largest resource for homeless men in Quebec and for homeless women in Canada. The Mission provides life-saving emergency services, as well as adapted physical and mental health programs, affordable housing options, psychosocial support, community outreach and research. Aimed at eliminating chronic homelessness in Montreal, our person-centred approach puts a strong focus on rapid re-housing and helps over 4,000 homeless people each year to rebuild their lives. THINGS TO DO

Strangers in the Night Saturday

COMMUNITY - Since 2005, Strangers in the Night has been one of the largest and most anticipated charity fundraising events in town. To date they have raised $4 million for Montreal children’s charities – and this summer’s event will only raise those numbers. Guest are treated to gastronomic delights with close to 80 participating restaurants masterfully cooking up their specialties, preparing everyone for a night full of great music and dancing. Last year’s headline act, Styx (with Gowan), was an enormous success and this year’s act will not disappoint. Every year they bring it up a notch with internationally renowned artists – and for the 14th edition of Strangers in the Night they are proudly presenting renowned songwriter/performer Boy George with super group Culture Club. Together they gained international success in the 80’s until the band was dissolved in 1986, but now Montrealers (especially those who know their ‘Karma Chameleon’ from ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’) will have the opportunity to get their groove on. Special guests also include Crystal Waters, an American house and dance music singer and songwriter, best

www.mtltimes.ca

known for her 1990’s dance hits ‘Gypsy Woman’ and ‘100% Pure Love’, as well as jazz, dance/electronic sensation Freddie James who should inspire you to ‘Get Up and Boogie’. Past musical performers include Kool and the Gang, Blue Rodeo, KC and The Sunshine Band, Nikky Yanovsky, Devine Brown, Martha Wash and a host of top rated Montreal bands including Boogie Wonderband, Rob Brennan and jazz great Wally Muhamed. Due to land expropriation at Fairview Pointe Claire for the Light Rail project, where they held the event for the past 9 years, they have to change locations – but are looking forward to a new chapter for Strangers in the Night. Starting this year, the August 25th event will be held in Pierrefonds at the Borough Hall, 13665 Pierrefonds Blvd. The event website will be up and running this Friday, but for table reservations you can contact Ellen at 514233-7535. FOOD

Montreal Ribfest 2018 a tasty success By: Stuart Nulman / mtltimes.ca

FOOD - Over 30,000 people flocked to a converted empty lot across the street from Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School on Pierrefonds Boulevard to enjoy three days of great food, great live music and a whole lot of late summer family fun at the annual Montreal Ribfest, which took place from August 17 to 19. I have developed a weakness for southern style BBQ throughout my life, which was fortified even further when I experienced – and tasted – genuine BBQ during visits to Nashville, Memphis and Dallas (including Central BBQ in Memphis, which is regarded as one of the

14

best BBQ restaurants in North America). It was my first visit to Ribfest in three years, and sizing up the six gargantuan kiosks where the six visiting ribbers, who came from across the U.S. and Canada, exhibited their passion for cooking BBQ – not to mention being amazed by the displays of their respective multitude of trophies and awards and being tantalized by the overwhelming, delicious, tangy, smoky smells that emanated from their respective grills – I wondered to my myself why did I wait for three whole years to visit Ribfest once again? www.mtltimes.ca

August 22, 2018

It wasn’t the long lines at each kiosk that prolonged my decision as to which ribber I should choose to sample their BBQ wares, but the embarrassment of riches that these six had to offer. The six ribbers (Ribs Royale, The Hogfather, Fatboys Southern Smokehouse, Billy Bones BBQ, Dinosaur BBQ Pit and Camp 31), offered items ranging from, of course, ribs (available in full, half and 1/3-racks), pulled pork, chicken, sausages and sides (i.e., cole slaw and beans). After two or three walkbys and some careful deliberation, I chose to sample the food from Billy Bones BBQ. And it was a decision that I never regretted. I decided on the 1/3-third rack of ribs (four sizeable ribs), which was grilled to perfection and smothered in their award-winning barbecue sauce. The verdict: dee-licious, as the meat was tender and tasty and easily slid off the bone with each bite; and the sauce was so savoury, I spent extra time making sure I stripped each rib bone clean of its meat and sauce and enjoyed every minute of that taste experience. And I wisely topped it off with an order of their freshly-baked southern cornbread that – without exaggeration – was the best cornbread I ever tasted. In fact, I liked it so much, that I ordered another generous portion of their cornbread to take home with me (which was polished off in

www.mtltimes.ca

FOOD

less than 24 hours). And for those who are not fans of BBQ, Ribfest also had a variety of kiosks of different types of summertime and picnic-style foods, such as lobster roles, roasted corn on the cob, fried potato spirals, soft ice cream, Beaver Tails, soft drinks and homemade lemonade (where you were to add your own flavours to it from a wide choice of flavoured syrups). And throughout the weekend, Ribfest offered a continuous line-up of 21 local bands and singers such as Olivier Forrest, Space Wizard and Stereo Bling that provided live music as attendees enjoyed their ribs and sides. As well, there were kiosks that represented local crafts, boutiques and businesses offering their respective merchandise and services, plus a children’s play zone with inflated bouncy houses and various fun activities. Appetites for southern style BBQ food were not the only things that benefitted from this year’s successful Ribfest. Proceeds from the weekend benefitted the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the West Island, a long time volunteer organization that offers vital mentoring services to children who go through difficult and at risk situations.
