Laughter is the best medicine for stress M ost of us have some experience with stress, anxiety, panic attack disorders, inflammation and pain whether suffering ourselves or experiencing it through a friend or family member. All of these health concerns are related to various diseases. In every disease one or more of the afflictions exist. If no obvious disease is diagnosed at present, ongoing stress, anxiety, inflammation and pain will precipitate a health problem. The chaos around us and fast paced living adds to the problem amplifying the reaction/disease re-

sponse. Looking for answers or suggestions to avoid illness or slow its progress by helping ourselves, I

healthier studies. I think many of us are trying to follow some guidelines however there are confusing and conflicting claims out there making choices difficult….a topic for another week. The one claim I found interesting was about the effects of Laughter. The positive side of exploring laughter is that it is not complicated! Laughter can help all disorders. It only has positive side effects and everyone can do it! Some may believe that they don’t have a sense of humor…No Problem! Humor can be learned. In fact, developing or refining your sense of humor may be easier than you think. Start with simple things like finding a few simple items, such as photos, greeting cards or comic strips that make you chuckle. Then hang them up at home or in your office. Keep funny movies and books on hand for when you need an added humor boost. Look online at joke websites. Laughing does you good. Laughter is a great form of stress relief, and that's no joke. A good sense of humor can't cure all ailments, but there is evidence about the positive things laughter can do. A good laugh has great short-term ef-

fects. When you start to laugh, it doesn't just lighten your load mentally, it actually induces physical changes in your body. (Mayo Clinic stress management) Laughter isn't just a quick pick-me-up, though. It's also good for you over the long term. Laughter may improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts can help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses. It can relieve pain by causing the body

to produce its own natural painkillers. Laughter can also make it easier to cope with difficult situations and improve your mood. Many people experience depression, sometimes due to chronic illnesses. Laughter can help lessen your depression and anxiety and may make you feel happier. The laughter information I really enjoyed was about Laughter Yoga. In laughter yoga, people practice laughter as a group. Laughter is forced at first, but it can soon turn into spontaneous laughter. At first people feel shy and silly participating in this group laugh-

ter but it becomes catchy. I watched a few u-tubes about it and must admit that they made me chuckle. Go ahead and give it a try. Turn the corners of your mouth up into a smile and then give a laugh, even if it feels a little forced. Once you've had your chuckle, think about how you are feeling. Are your muscles a little less tense? Do you feel more relaxed? If so that's the natural wonder of laughing at work. Comments suggestions welcome. byrne299@gmail.com Check out the website livinglaughter.ca. To be continued…..

Naturally, the renewed idea of a tramway system for Montreal makes many people excited, not only those nostalgic about a means of transportation that –as Low states on his film – was clean, efficient and produced zero emission, but also anyone who

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale Cote St-Luc we only give classes for rhythmic gymnastics

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn • September 1, 2018

may be concerned about environmental and urban issues. One good point that Low's documentary also makes is that the tramway as a means of transportation is even "more democratic" than other means: one tram – depending on its size of course – could move between 70 to 200 passengers. "Why the tramways had to be removed from most cities in North America so individual motorists could have the streets all for themselves?" asks the filmmaker. The documentary also described many factors to support the thesis that moving on rails is actually the smoothest and more energy-efficient way of transportation.Would our policy-makers bring the tramway back to Montreal?

Régie issues liquor permit to Dorval bar targeting Inuit 50

he Ullivik Centre works to improve the overall health, well-being, and living conditions of Inuit. Situated in an industrial area of Dorval bordering Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Ullivik’s residential facility provides temporary accommodation, transportation and nursing services for Inuit patients (and accompanying family members) receiving health care in Montreal. On July 27, 2018, the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux approved the issuance of a liquor permit to Resto Bar Archies. Located 600 meters from the entrance to the Ullivik facility, the Bar specifically targets Inuit. Together with the City of Dorval, the Service de

Police de la Ville de Montréal, and a lawyer from the Régie itself, the Ullivik Centre presented the Régie’s members with a range of health, safety, and social issues that constituted a significant threat to the public interest. Many of the arguments put forward highlighted particular service needs in the context of Inuit culture as well as the complexities of Inuit history. The Ullivik Centre documents more than a thousand intoxication-related incidents annually. Despite these submissions, the Régie issued the liquor permit. The Ullivik Centre is appealing this decision and has received support from Ungava MNA Jean Boucher and the Makivik Corporation, an Inuit non-profit organization created under the

terms of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement to promote the social, economic and cultural development of Quebec Inuit. Many Inuit who come south for health care and healing are survivors of trauma. For many Inuit, colonial policies led to substance abuse, sexual abuse, and violence. In cooperation with the SPVM, Ms. Maggie Putulik, Director of the Ullivik Centre, has worked to sensitize police officers to the specific needs of Inuit in the Montreal-area. Tackling these complex issues requires that governments and organizations – including the Régie – work together to implement cross-sector solutions that support and draw upon the resilience that characterizes the Inuit.

Great road trips for the long weekend

W

ith the long weekend ahead of us, why not take the opportunity to explore our beautiful province and the wealth of experiences it has to offer? You don’t have to go very far to satisfy your travel cravings and experience gastronomy, culture and natural beauty at its finest. Here are some road trip ideas to inspire your next plans, within twohour drives of Montreal. • A restful trip in the Eastern Townships

By Catherine Maisonneuve

mtltimes.ca

With its breathtaking towns and villages, upscale gourmet restaurants, farmers’ markets, spa stays and wine routes, the Eastern Townships are a great destination for those wishing to unwind, wine and dine. The perfect itinerary:

• September 1, 2018

Spa Eastman

Start your restful trip in the Eastern Townships with a full 24h detox program at legendary Spa Eastman. Nestled on 326 acres of land and forest, Spa Eastman was the first "destination spa" in Quebec and the idea here is to indulge in the full experience. Established in 1977, its reputation has grown because of the excellent quality of its services, fine dining offer, exclusive activity program, fitness activities and top-of-the-line spa treatments. The all-inclusive program allows you to fully disconnect while enjoying the spa facilities, the daily free activities, the healthy meal program and the refurbished rooms to spend the night on site and wake up fully refreshed and ready to retox. After 24 hours well

spent under the good care of the professional team of Spa Eastman, why not hit the road and enjoy a wine tour? The Eastern Townships produce more than 60% of Quebec wines and The Wine

Bleu Lavande

Route is a great way to make new and delicious discoveries. The only urban winery in the region, set in the heart of Dunham village, Le Clos Sainte-Croix, offers visits, tastings and the option to

picnic on the fields. If you are not a wine person, Bleu Lavande also offers the visit, discovery and picnic options, this time in a lavender field. It is the perfect day trip idea before heading to North

Hatley for the finest evening. Manoir Hovey, member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association, is a must-see. In season, their gourmet table Le Hatley offers the option (by reservation only) to organize a private dinner on Beaver Beach, a small beach nestled on the majestuous site of Manoir Hovey. In the morning, enjoy breakfast and some fun and games at their outdoor pool overlooking the lake, try paddleboarding, kayaking or book an in-room massage. It's whatever you want at this Quebec landmark and it's definitely worth a visit while exploring the Eastern Townships. continued on Page 7

problems to get venues for some of the movies, and this year the event had a new threat. At one point Revenu Quebec was threatening to close down the WFF for good. If that had happened it would have made no one proud: it would have put tax collectors (the loathed "publicans," as they were called at the time of the Roman Empire) in a position to dictate cultural policies in the province of Quebec. The mainstream media have practically ignored the event, making it more difficult for the public to get information about the movies. Journalists such as The Gazette's Brendan Kelly launched a vicious attack on Losique and his festival. Others like La Presse's Marc-André Lussier and Mario Girard attempted a more balanced approach by trying to unravel what they called "the Losique mystery," however, regardless of the passionate reactions that the WFF founder may elicit, the truth is that if the WFF

disappears, it would be a loss for the city. I say this because -with all due respect to the other film festivals in town- none of them has undertaken the mission of being a window to the cinema of the

T

hose who anticipated the death of the Montreal World Film Festival were once again proven wrong. Despite all the problems derived from lack of funding from Telefilm Canada (federal) and SODEC (provincial), a defiant Serge Losique was able to open the 42nd edition of the WFF this past August 23, with a red carpet and the presence of some Chinese stars. However, that was far from the festival openings of yesteryears, when that was a ceremony nobody wanted to miss. Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and successive Quebec premiers were usually honour guests. In the WFF's golden years the first show was held at the Maisonneuve Theatre of the Place des Arts and followed by a lavish party at the Hyatt main ballroom. The WFF survives but with problems: 2015 was the last time that it published a catalogue describing the films, in 2016 and 2017 there were severe

world as the FFM has done. NOW, THE FILMS "Samurai's Promise" (Daisaku Kimura, Japan, Official Competition). The WFF opening film. A story set in a corrupt 18th century Japan, an engaging story that makes this film a good contender for the first prize. Its only prob-

lem: a music score totally alien to the epoch and the place, moreover, its first tunes resemble the music of "The Godfather." "The Etruscan Smile" (Mihal Brezis, Oded Binnun, Switzerland-Germany-USA. Official Competition). An excellent performance by Brian Cox, a Scott suddenly transplanted to San Francisco where his son lives. A story of cultural shock and a problematic family re-encounter. Another good contender for the Grand Prix des Amériques. "Diana" (Alejo Moreno, Spain, First Feature Competition). An interesting plot focused on a highlevel prostitute and her relationship with a prosperous businessman. Some sequences, however, in particular, the ones with the prostitute

participating in a lesbian act are not relevant to an otherwise engaging story. "No One Will Ever Know" (Jesus Torres, Mexico, First Feature Competition). Set in rural Mexico, this movie features Lucia and her son Braulio, enjoying and living in the fantasy of soap operas. That until the occurrence of a tragic event. Not a bad story, but it has a plodding narrative. "The Commitment" (Jian Lu, China. Official Competition). This is a sad commentary on the contemporary life in rural China. After an accident in a quarry that left one of his workers in a coma, and where he is the boss, Yu takes advantage of the worker's wife. • Outdoor fun at MontTremblant Mont-Tremblant is the perfect getaway for those wishing to enjoy the great outdoors. The colourful pedestrian village is the perfect starting point to a great weekend of outdoor fun. With the mountain and the lake at your doorstep, Mont-Tremblant can offer family entertainment for days. The perfect itinerary: There’s a lot to do in Mont-Tremblant : paddle-

boarding or kayaking on the lake, hiking the mountain or downhilling the trails in luge but, after a full day playing outside, a hotel located at walking distance from everything is the thing you will be the most thankful for. There are a lot of accommodation options in the pedestrian village of Mont-Tremblant, but a few have been recently renovated. The Fairmont Mont-Tremblant is one of them and offers a brand new lobby, lounge bar, restaurant, spa and pools.

Fairmont Mont Tremblant

Good thing about the restaurants, because Mont-Tremblant may for long have had a lot to offer as a getaway destination, but the food offer wasn't that great. With the opening of new Restaurant Choux Gras, there is now a great fine dining option in the village. Another great dining option in the area is Restaurant Altitude at Casino MontTremblant, where the view is as good as the food. During your next trip to Mont-Tremblay, don't forget to book

evening activities as well and enjoy a show and some entertainment at the lively Casino or book your ticket for the Tonga Lumina interactive outdoor show happening in the Tremblant mountain every night until October. Mont-Tremblant used to be considered an overrated destination, but considering everything there is to do on site, it's a great option for an outdoor fun getaway.

The Hornets home field is located at Jeanne-Mance Park and games are on weekends. The program can count on the support of 40 devoted volunteer coaches. These coaches were named Personnality of the Week by La

Meawhile, the Hornets have shown an amazing track record so far this season, especially the Midgets currently undefeated 3-0. he Sun Youth Hornets football program has been around for decades and they owe their longevity to the late cofounder of the organization, Earl De La Perralle, who sadly passed away on June 19th at the age of 73. The "Godfather", as he was known in the amateur football scene, may be gone but he will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through Sun Youth's sports programs, including his beloved Hornets. The Sun Youth Hornets offer children 7 to 17 years old the chance to play football in various provincial civil leagues such as the QMFL, QBFL and the MRFL. The organization thus provides yougsters with an alternative to channel their energy positively through sport while supporting their education. Coach Earl always believed that school success should come first, with his pass-to-play approach. With Sun Youth the student-athletes are fully supported in their education with tutors available after class in the organization's Study Hall. They are also provided with a healthy snack prior to practice to make sure they have enough energy to play the sport they love. While the football season has already started the Hornets are still recruiting players for all their teams: Atoms (7-9 years old), Mosquitoes (10-11), Pee-Wee (12-13), Bantam (14-15) and Midget (16-17), with the

Some communities provide furnished rooms for a few days at no charge to help the future resident get acclimated. 10. Be sure to complete the resident history questionnaires before moving in as it helps the staff in the building become even more involved with the new resident if they already know their history, likes and dislikes. When there is a move into a retirement home, the lack of familiarity with both the environment and the other residents can be quite intimidating. Very often, family members can feel guilty about placing loved ones into a senior residence. The reality is that a move will most likely be for the best. Please see ad next page.

The best car for every Millennial By Harry Kasparian Montreal Times

We millennials have everyone confused. We have varying views on marriage, corporate culture and even travel. Our spending habits are historically unconventional. Every industry is trying to accommodate and capitalize to our tastes and values. The automotive industry is no different. After all, we are today’s largest generation with the highest purchasing power of any group before us. A popular misconception is that we aren’t buying cars at all. However, the truth is millennials are, but we are doing so at our own pace. Millennials prefer, for example, short-term commitments and don’t necessarily want to own a car for more than five years. And just like the trend of postponing marriage and rearing children, some of us are also delaying the big car purchase until our 30s. Defined as those born between the years of 1980 to 1996, millennials are seen as a diverse and complex group. While we have different wants and beliefs, one thing is for sure: when it comes to our attitudes toward cars and car ownership, we don’t see our vehicle as just a means of transportation. Rather, it’s an extension of our personality and the gateway to the lifestyle we want. Choosing a car is always an adventure. So to help you navigate the numerous options out there, here’s my list of the best cars that reflect who you are and where you’re going: 1) The Always-Connected If you’re attached to your phone, connectivity to you is important. As soon as you get into the driver’s seat you want your phone to display your route and sync your playlist seamlessly, freeing you up to focus on the road, distracted free. For first time buyers, look into a Chevy Cruz, Honda Accord, Honda Civic or a Nissan Altima. They all offer the latest technol-

ogy to keep you driving hands free. These cars are also sporty enough for someone on a modest budget. Best of all, the latest models can help you safely parallel park and/or warn you of oncoming traffic to avoid collisions, helping you feel more comfortable if you’re new on the road. PRO TIP: Everyone loves new bells and whistles, but ensure you understand (and need) all the features that come with the vehicle. Look into older models and purchase off season to lock in a good price. 2) The Un-Soccer Mom If your birth year falls into the earlier tip of the millennial bracket, chances are you’re balancing a career with a baby on the way. However, you wouldn’t naturally gravitate toward the typical minivan. Car manufacturers have tuned into your needs and have supplied subcompact SUVs as the answer. Take a look at the Buick Encore, Buick Envision, GMC Terrain or Mazda CX-3. These models are multifunctional – sleek enough to park in your reserved spot at the office with room for cargo and family life. PRO TIP: We know you’re busy, but it helps to do your research. Get price quotes online and get pre-approved financing from sites like HGrégoire. Ensure you have accurate figures, especially when you’ll have to start budgeting for a growing family. 3) The Hustler You are no longer the company intern and you’re hitting your stride in your career. You want

your vehicle to reflect your ambition but without appearing overly confident. Luxury car manufacturers have introduced lower-price point models, such as the Mercedes CLA, BMW 1-series, Lexus CT 200h and Audi A3, with the goal to entice and mold you into a life-long customer. If a designer brand doesn’t resonate with you, but you still crave a vehicle with performance and design, additional options are a Subaru WRX, Subaru BRX and the Nissan GTR. PRO TIP: Since you might be looking to upgrade your vehicle sooner than the average person, make sure to ask about the trade in value of your car or what it would re-sell for in the future. If you’re already thinking of selling, visit sites like Autobye.com, which is a simple platform to sell your vehicle for maximum value. 4) The Scenester Like most of us, your social calendar is full – from brunch dates to a night out with friends, you live for interaction. To you, driving your car is a joy in and of itself. You want your vehicle to be fun and unique. Try the Mini Cooper, Scion TC or Ford Focus. Not only do these cars serve as a conversation starter, but they have the best sound systems, allowing you to set the mood prior to arriving at your destination. PRO TIP: With your always-on-the-go schedule, ensure to enquire about models that require less maintenance and general upkeep. 5) The Weekend Warrior

You work hard and play hard. As soon as the weekend hits, you want to jump into your car for the next adventure. And if you are among the 60 per cent of millennials who are single, you’re free for impromptu weekend getaways at a moment’s notice.A Jeep Renegade, Jeep Trailhawk, Jeep Cherokee or a Ford F-Series pickup may be just the ride for you. They can handle any terrain and give plenty of room – whether it’s to store your gear or provide legroom for your crew. PRO TIP: Look for cars that have low mileage based on its year. On average, people drive their cars 12,000 to 15,000 kilometres annually. Do some quick calculations to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck. While the above tips may help, above all, do your research and take a car out on a test drive. Also ask about refund and exchange policies, in case you’re not completely satisfied with your purchase. Pre-owned car dealerships like HGrégoire allow you to check out hundreds of models online. Once you’re ready to take the car out for a spin, the dealership guarantees it will be available when you arrive, and you have three days from the point of purchase to return your vehicle in the off chance you change your mind. Harry Kasparian is the millennial vice president of marketing and communications at HGrégoire, which is part of HGrégoire, a network of more than 22 new and pre-owned car dealerships in North America. Mineral Oil? Yes or No?

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

Mineral Oil Definition: Noun: a distillation product of petroleum, especially one used as a lubricant, moisturizer, or laxative.

The Debate: Is mineral oil safe for the skin? Finding the answer can be confusing. Some say yes. Some say no. We do our research and... We say NO. Mineral oil is petroleum based and offers no nutritious benefits to the skin. It might be ‘considered’ safe but that is not a solid reason to use it. What does ‘safe’ truly mean and who decides? If the skin is a living organ it should be well fed. Petroleum is not a good food for the skin. Back in 2003, Paula Begoun wrote a mammoth 1300 page book ‘Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me’.The book is a reference for companies and their product lines. Kudos for being well researched, extensive, informative. Yet, there are many things with which I disagree. For example, chemical sunscreen for babies and the use of mineral oil. I will concentrate on the later. Begoun is in favour of mineral oil. In her review she writes,“Mineral oil is an exceptional ingre-

16

www.mtltimes.ca

dient for dry skin and its demise in skin care products would be sad to see.” Begoun is referring to the fact that companies were starting to sell skin care as ‘mineral free’. People had begun questioning the use of petroleum on the skin. Others argued that many grandmothers swore by Vaseline and had no wrinkles. In her book, Begoun totes the positive properties of mineral oil and felt it a shame we might be swayed from using products with mineral oil. I wonder if Begoun would still agree now, 15 years later, with updated information on mineral oil. Mineral oils, like Vaseline pretty much sit on the skin, preventing moisture loss. Proponents of Vaseline interpret this as ‘Vaseline does not dry out the skin.” Seriously? Since Begoun’s research, new studies have indicated that some mineral oils may actually contain toxins. The oil itself is not metabolized so the toxins remain. This oil has also been shown to clog the pores (earlier beliefs said it did not). In blocking the pores the skin’s natural respiration is affected. This can aggravate acne, pimples, blackheads. It is a known fact that there is nothing beneficial nutritionally in mineral oil on the skin. Whether or not it is a

carcinogen is still under study. Why take the risk? We have so many better choices today. Good heathy oils, from plant leaves, barks, nuts, flowers. When people ask us, “Has this product been dermatologically approved?” My response,” Not dermatologically tested, but tested yes. And extensively, over centuries.” I explain that it is not always in certain profession's best interest to study natural products. Too costly. Mineral oil, for example, is cheap to produce, so why not market a product where the profit is good. It was our ancestors who weeded out any potentially poisonous ones for us, discouvered and devised the perfect solutions to cleanse, moisturize, protect and heal the skin. Yes, they have been tested over centuries. Not in a lab. But in and from nature itself. On us, successfully. Call us or visit our shop or at a show-on-the-road. We will be pleased to advise you.
