Pro-skier launches climate change advocacy group ‘Protect Our Winters in Canada’ By: Deborah Rankin / mtltimes.ca

NEWS – Pro-skier Mike Douglas will always be known as the "Godfather" of freeskiing. These days the proskier turned filmmaker has a twin mission: to protect winter and raise awareness about climate change. Douglas is the producer of the Curve of Time a video timecapsule to be opened in 2050 which examines the effects of climate change on the planet. He recently teamed up www.mtltimes.ca

with professional snowboarder Marie-France Roy and pro-skier Greg Hill (featured in the video with Chris Rubens) to launch Protect Our Winters (POW) in Canada after been involved with its parent organization in the U.S.A.. Douglas has a social media following and is a voice for climate change advocacy.

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". To order a FREE Special Report, visit www.WestislandGuaranteedSold.com or to hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-727-7105 and enter 3005. Mandatory Winter Tires and 'Mobile Igloos' By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

NEWS - Although it will only be next year when the official date for having mandatory winter tires installed on your car changes from December 15th to December 1st - it wouldn't be a bad idea to make that change now. In fact, it makes good sense. Winter tires have been mandatory for drivers in Quebec since 2008, and for good reason. Not only do they offer drivers better control on snow and ice, but compared to All-Season tires, they also provide better traction when temperatures start dropping. The rubber 6

compound of winter tires is designed to have the flexibility needed for a better grip on road surfaces in temperatures as low as -40C. All-Season tires just don’t cut it because as soon as the temperature drops below 7°C, or when there is ice or snow on the road, the rubber compound of the tires harden and loses its grip. Breaking on ice at 30km/hr on Winter tires takes approximately 30.1 metres to stop, versus All-season tires at 44.8 metres. An almost 15 metre difference could be a very significant factor when it comes to avoiding accidents. www.mtltimes.ca

Along with that, drivers must also be diligent in 'Adapting their Driving Habits to the Conditions on the Road'. It not only makes common sense, but drivers also have a legal obligation to do so. And then there is the 'MOBILE IGLOO'; even with proper winter tires on and smart driving, this is a serious menace drivers are required to heed. It's when snow or ice is not properly cleared from a vehicule before getting on to the roads, especially on highways. Not only does it dangerously obscure a driver's vision, but when left on a car (or semitrailer trucks for that matter), especially on the roof huge chunks of ice or snow can suddenly dislodge, hitting cars behind them or causing them to swerve and lose control, sometimes even breaking windshields leading to potentially serious or even life-threatening accidents. For those who have to park their cars outside all winter long, it could be especially inconvenient. Trying to remove ice or a foot of snow off a car in below freezing temperatures could be a daunting experience indeed, www.mtltimes.ca

but it is a responsibility that comes with driving. If logic does not appeal to the senses, perhaps the SAAQ fines and demerit points will: • FAILURE TO ADAPT YOUR DRIVING TO WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS: A $60 fine, plus costs and 2 Demerit Points. • MANDATORY WINTER TIRES: If your vehicle is not equipped with winter tires by the official December date and until March 15th of the next year, you could face fines from $200 to $300 - plus costs. • DRIVING A “MOBILE IGLOO”: A peace officer may impose a fine of $100 to $200, plus costs, on the driver and require that the vehicle’s windows and windshield be cleared of ice, snow, or any other matter that reduces the driver’s visibility. *NO PERSON may drive a vehicle covered with ice, snow, or any other matter that may detach from the vehicle and constitute a hazard for other road users. Offenders face a fine of $60 to $100, plus costs.

Bixi Montreal show record number rides MONTREAL - As BIXI's 10th season comes to an end on Thursday evening, BIXI MONTRÉAL continues to celebrate this anniversary! We hit a record high of more than 5.3 million rides in a single season in 2018, which is an 11.3% increase compared with 2017. With the ridership rate constantly rising year after year, BIXI MONTRÉAL President Marie Elaine Farley says that she is very proud of what has been achieved so far: "By enhancing the client experience and continuing to innovate with the collaboration of important partners who are committed to improving urban mobility, including our presenting partner Manuvie, BIXI MONTRÉAL has shown its capacity to renew itself. We are proud of contributing to the cycling modal share in Greater Montreal through an offering that is ever more diversified and accessible to the public and visitors alike." Ms. Farley also underscores the success of innovative initiatives that can respond to clients' present and future needs. "New products, implementation of a corporate sales service that is more popular than ever, pilot projects for electric bicycles, BIXI laser for client safety, attractive new prices and the rollout of an OPUS payment system combining public transit and bike-sharing are a few examples which speak for BIXI's vitality over the past five years," she adds. A LARGER NETWORK IN 2019: FIVE NEW BOROUGHS WILL BE SERVED Since its launch in Montreal, 1.3 million Bixists have

10

clocked more than 38 million rides, which shows Montrealers' captivation for the BIXI service. In a context where traffic jams, environmental preservation and the role of cars in the urban setting are topics of concern, a bike-sharing service such as BIXI is proving to be more relevant than ever. As increased use is projected for the next few years, the City of Montreal announced in August that the BIXI network would start expanding from 2019. "BIXI, at the heart of the city's future development plans, is an integral part of promotion strategies for active transportation modes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a higher quality of life. The addition of 1,000 new self-service bikes and installation of 60 new stations will enable BIXI to be even more present in the Montreal area. Also, an investment of $15 million will pave the way for 48 bike path development projects to be implemented and the existing network to be upgraded so that is safer and more user-friendly. To date, the network has 879 km of bike paths, making Montrealers prouder than ever," says Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante. 60 new stations, 2,625 docking points and 1,000 additional bicycles will be in service from next spring. So, BIXI will be present in five new boroughs, that is, Lachine, Saint-Laurent, Montréal-Nord, Anjou and SaintLéonard. Currently, BIXI is working together with the boroughs to finalize the location of new stations. www.mtltimes.ca

TRAVEL

(re)discover Turks & Caicos By: Catherine Maisonneuve / mtltimes.ca

TRAVEL - Grace Bay Beach was named 2018 World’s Best Beach by Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards. So why now hop on a flight and come see it for yourself ? The famous stretches of uncrowded beaches and vibrant coral reefs of the islands of Turks and Caicos offers unique serenity, hospitality and beauty. They are also more accessible than you think. The perfect itinerary in Providenciales: The Turks and Caicos consist of 40 different islands and cays, only 8 of which are inhabited. From the main tourist center of Providenciales to the quiet and tranquil islands of North and Middle Caicos; each one offers a different experience and a unique character but all offer year-round great climate, splendid beaches and fun underwater activities. Since the international airport is located in Providenciales, and so the “best beach in the world”, why not stay on the “main island” and plan a day trip (or two) to check out the other islands, while you

www.mtltimes.ca

are there… Most of the islands are only about 10 to 25 minutes by air and can be reached by boat, too. West Jet & Air Canada offer weekly direct flights to/from Toronto and also flights from Montreal (with a connection in Toronto Pearson) to Providenciales. The flight from Toronto is less than 4 hours, therefore it is possible to visit the island only for a short trip. The very popular Club Med Turkoise, ideally located on Grace Bay Beach (aka the best beach in the world), just went through major renovations after Hurricane Irma hit the island in September 2017. After a complete makeover, the colourful adults-only all-inclusive resort reopened last Spring as a 4 Trident (4 stars) property. And it now looks better than ever.

COMMUNITY

Dorval City wins Renaissance Challenge COMMUNITY - The City of Dorval and its citizens stood out as part of the Renaissance Fall fundraising campaign, held from September 23 to October 20, 2018. On the occasion, Renaissance launched the "Renaissance Challenge", a friendly competition where 25 cities and boroughs of Greater Montreal were in the running. The people of Metropolitan Montreal were invited to donate their clothing and reusable items to the donation center in their neighbourhood, to support their municipality and the mission to return to the Renaissance job market. Congratulations to the City of Dorval! The City of Dorval hosts a Renaissance collection point within its territory. Thanks to the generosity of the population, the municipality won the prize for the largest number of donations collected per 1000 inhabitants, with 126.37 donors. There are 80,535 pounds of clothing and other household goods that have been diverted from landfills. To underline the generosity and support of the citizens and those of the City of Dorval, Mr. Éric St-Arnaud, Executive Director of Renaissance, presented an honorary plaque to Mr. Edgar Rouleau, Mayor of the City of Dor-

"Thank you and congratulations to all the citizens of the City of Dorval, as well as to the municipality. Thanks to your donations, you make a great gesture for the environment, but also good for your community; every year, you make a difference in the lives of more than 200 people who are far from the job market, who regain their independence and their dignity, "says Éric St-Arnaud. Renaissance Renaissance is a non-profit organization in Quebec that has been working since 1994 with hundreds of people each year to return to the job market.
