In the Autumn of 2018 we already saw the demolition of the railway overpass - which has made way for laying the foundation for a continuous elevated structure on the whole branch, including installation of superstructures, excavation at the Technoparc and boring of the Airport tunnel. There has also been preparatory work towards the Pierrefonds-Roxboro branch since mid-September. Details of the work have not yet been released. Do you plan on using the REM? tem on the island. Indeed, the fundamental part of the entire system is the bus service, and it is on this front that the STM shows its main failures. Conflicting reports from management and unions, plus the constant complaints of the public, indicate that cancellation of buses is more common than in other cities. While an STM statement admitted to an 18 percent of its buses parked for repairs, the union representing maintenance workers put that number much higher: around 30 percent. Michael D'Alimonte, who had been reporting this issue for some time wrote that "There's a supply and demand problem in Montreal, and it's seriously affecting the

lives of citizens. Simply put: there aren't enough buses to meet the public transit needs of Montrealers." For her part, the Mayor has said that new vehicles will be purchased, but buses also need maintenance, and that aspect has been neglected in recent years, according to what the unions have denounced. This is not a new phenomenon nor is it exclusive to the STM, many government agencies and corporations across the country have fallen into this ideological notion of costs reduction, leading to cuts in various areas – in the case of the STM it seems that it has been in the maintenance department. This in turn results in deterioration of services, it is obvious, if buses receive less care than
they need, they will break down more often. Moreover, there has even been an increase in buses running out of fuel while on the road! Another report last week indicated that the new hybrid buses –hailed at the time of their introduction two years ago as a significant, modernizing step– are presenting many problems forcing many of them out of service. In a public statement this week, the STM replied that "It is incorrect to state that hybrid buses were not designed to operate in an urban environment. They were designed for frequent start-stop driving; the problem involves the diesel engine, more specifically, its filters. These particulate filters are required by regula-
tion (clean engines)." Whatever the actual cause of the breakdowns, the end result has been fewer buses on the streets. Overcrowded buses creating great inconvenience to passengers is the immediate result of having a reduced fleet, a problem that is now so prevalent that according to a report by Radio Canada, drivers currently don't bother reporting it anymore. The question about the declining quality of bus service in Montreal becomes now, as we enter the winter season, a severe problem which –it seems– neither the STM management nor their political bosses at City Hall seem willing to tackle anytime soon.

ast March, Ogilvy's announced that their magical Christmas window display with the familiar and beloved mechanical jumping frogs, donkeys, monkeys and teddy bears of the Mill Forest and Enchanted Village - would be moving to a new home at the McCord Museum. They were merging their operations with Holt Renfrew and because there was a concern about space - they decided to donate the collection to the museum, along with $50,000, as their expertise would help them care for the toys and put together a new exhibit for at least five years. As promised, the McCord Museum has continued the tradition and kept the magic alive with their mechanical holiday window display of 'The Mill in the Forest' just outside the museum at 690 Sherbrooke St. West. in other neighbouring municipalities and boroughs, especially regarding traffic impact. Carbonleo, the developer of the giant mall at the cost of $1.7 billion, describes the project in these terms: "Royalmount intends to create a bustling multifunctional urban pole that will be green, local, and innovative. Set to include a wide variety of uses such as hotels, offices, commercial establishments, restaurants, cinemas, concert halls and other types of entertainment, the project will revolve around an animated space within a visionary complex with distinctive architecture." Quite attractive on paper, however, the impact on traffic has raised concerns among the people in the adjacent boroughs, and even in the areas of Mile End, and The Plateau, since the effects of the extra vehicles running on the two highways would also spread to arteries that feed and are fed by them, such as Jean Talon. The City of Montreal's Eco-

nomic and Urban Development and Housing Commission issued a report that contains important concerns regarding the impact on circulation in the area. It states that while on average 360,000 vehicles use every weekday the Decarie Expressway or some of the connected streets in that area, the construction of the new project which should be finished by 2022, would result in an addition of 70,000 more vehicles. Although some measures to counter these adverse effects have
14.
been proposed for the area or incorporated into the project such as a reprogramming of traffic lights and a pedestrian link to the De la Savane metro station, critics of the complex are not satisfied and are demanding a revision of the plan. Carbonleo for its part also reacted to the report, stating in a communiqué released this past Tuesday that "Contrary to data that have been conveyed in some media reports, the increase in the number of vehicles will be
just 20,000 and not 70,000. Note that the current volume in the Décarie interchange area is 360,000 vehicles per day." The developer also contradicts the report regarding the increase of travel time for vehicles using the Decarie Expressway, Highway 40 between Cavendish and Highway 15, and others in the area, between the critical hours of 5 to 7 p.m. According to its own findings and with the increase in traffic that Carbonleo claims "The average effect is therefore not 20 to 30 minutes but rather five minutes for those scenarios." Is public interest being considered in this project? Which one of these assessments of the impact of such big structure is the right one? People who could be affected by the giant project will have an opportunity to voice their concerns at the first public session on the issue, to be held on November 27 at Montreal City Hall.

Mickey Mouse turns 90 years old
O
n November 18, 1928, Mickey Mouse made his first appearance on screen, "Steamboat Willie" was the short, black and white animation film that marked the debut of the famous mouse. This first Mickey had rather crude features, which would later be transformed into a more gentle appearance, especially one

that would better relate to kids. One has to remember that the first animation movies were not necessarily intended for children only, and they were usually designed as amusing complements to feature films intended for
all audiences. Only later, the big studios –and especially Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey– would realize the enormous marketing potential of movies for kids, which, since children wouldn't attend the shows alone, would necessarily involve the family as an audience as well. Unlike other characters who were first developed as comic strip characters and then crossed over into the film medium, Mickey only in 1930 made its first appearance as a comic strip in various newspapers. In 1941 it started to appear in a comic book, where, with some interruptions particularly between 1954 and 1962, and between 1991 and 2002, it has continued to be present until today. However, the golden period of the comic book was during the decades of 1940 to 1950, later being supplanted by television as the primary medium for children to familiarize with Mickey as well as with other of the many pop culture characters, while these days the Internet plays that role. Of all of Disney's characters, Mickey is still today
the most famous, and to some extent, an archetypical figure of American pop culture. When Disney created this mouse, he was careful to keep control of the character, unlike his bad experience with his first creature –Oswald the Rabbit– which he lost to the studio for which he worked before. So intense is the connection of Disney with Mickey that the
mouse has become a symbol for the Disney studio itself, and in a way, a projection of its own image, or the perception that Disney wanted to project of himself and his company. Initially seen in the early films as part of a tradition of the picaresque literature, i.e. a mischievous character, Mickey evolved into a sort of exemplary citizen, a conser-
vative typical "good" American, especially in the comic book format. A large part of the repertoire of Mickey's stories, especially from the 1950s, consisted of helping the police chief, Captain O'Hara, to catch lawbreakers. Mickey has also been a "political animal" taking a role as a model even at an international level. In 1935 the then League of Nations recognized Mickey Mouse as an "International Symbol of Good Will," a recognition that in Disney's view, was a distinction given to himself and his vision of the world. For his part, Disney made good use of his connections in the U.S. to promote his particular vision with substantial government support. When in the early 1940s his studio was close to going under,
Disney got important contracts to make propaganda wars, so Donald Duck went to fight the Nazis, and Mickey managed to mock Hitler (in their own propaganda, the Nazis usually presented their enemies as mice, so Mickey's animosity for the German dictator was a fitting revenge). Mickey is now one more of the many creatures that populate the vast universe of children entertainment, but it is undoubtedly one of the most typical figures of popular culture. He is still loved by many, but is also a character with controversial sides: a conservative yet compassionate individual, or a passionate defender of traditional values who would now be joining those who want to make America great again?

Redevelopment of Ste Catherine Street causes controversy

This week, reports appeared on the website of CTV and on The Gazette, highlighted what seems to be the plan that the city administration has for Ste. It is important to remember that it all started a couple of years ago when the former mayor announced that given that water pipes and sewers running beneath the street had to be replaced, a complete overBy Sergio Martinez haul of Ste. would include the narrowing of the street to only one lane for car traffic, and another for deliveries. A total of 140 parking would be eliminated between Bleury and Mansfield, the first phase of the street's overhaul, but when all parking spaces are removed in the western section up to Atwater Ave., a total of 484 parking spots will be gone, if this plan goes ahead, and opposition to it doesn't prevent this. Reactions to the changes on the part of businesses as well as from those who
work in the area have been understandably adverse: although using public transit is generally recommended when coming downtown, that might not always suit everyone. People doing shopping who carry large items will prefer to travel by car, the same may apply to the elderly with some mobility problems. And, at least shoppers, may opt to visit suburban malls instead, a prospect that, if generalized, may be lethal for downtown stores. Sidewalks will be widened to 6 meters, in

an apparent move to privilege pedestrian circulation over motorized one. However, opposition at city hall and retail businesses have argued that the elimination of parking space as planned for the central part of Ste. Catherine will cause irreparable damage to this, the most important commercial street in the city core. Others argue that although for many years, indeed since the private car became omnipresent in the urban landscape of North America, motorists had all the privileges:
roads were built, streets widened to accommodate them, highways multiplied sometimes cutting through entire neighbourhoods. Now it seems that pendulum is going in the direction of favouring pedestrians and cyclists, for a long time neglected. However, the question to ask now to the Projet Montréal Mayor and her councillors is whether moving the pendulum into the other extreme will do any good to the people of Montreal, in particular, those who work or live in the downtown area. A middle ground, in this case, is highly needed: Ste. Catherine St. is a great place to stroll during the summer or spring months, but in the middle of a five-month winter, it is not that wonderful. This street is lively and pleasant to walk because of the many amenities it offers, and those depend to a great extent, on the availability of restaurants and stores on Ste. Catherine. Making the street too restrictive to access may end up "killing the goose that lays the golden eggs."

onight (November 24) is your last chance to catch the compelling “The Tashme Project: The Living Archives”, which is being featured at the Centaur Theatre as its Brave New Looks selection for 2018. Presented by Tashme Productions, the play is an oral history that deals with the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. It’s based on 70 hours of interviews that were conducted with the Nisei (second generation Japanese Canadians) by the play’s creators/performers Julie Tamiko Manning and Matt Miwa (who are themselves descendants of these Nisei). Throughout the 90minute production, both Manning and Miwa take on a variety of roles; not only as themselves, but also the many Nisei whom they interviewed. And through flawless transitions, they become those Nisei, and adopt their characteristics, mannerisms and sentiments, as they recount their lives in Canada before, during and after their respective internments (many of them were spent in the Tashme camp that was located in the B.C. interior). Combine that with the stunning multi-media stage design that allows a more visual aspect of those interment stories that are being retold,“The Tashme Project: The Living Archives” is a compelling piece of living history that strongly brings forward one of the most shameful episodes in Canadian history, in which a segment of the population were regarded as outstanding citizens one day, and then enemy aliens the next day. And with the 30th anniversary of the Canadian government’s formal apology to these Japanese Canadian internees and the Japanese Canadian Redress Agreement happening this year, this play becomes an even more relevant example of what injustice based on fear is all about. For more information about the play, go to: www.thetashmeproject.com *** How far would someone show their gratitude for a small favour, before it goes overboard and becomes even further complicated beyond the point of no return? That idea is explored is Oren Safdie’s play “Gratitude”, which is playing at the MainLine Theatre, 3997 St. Laurent Boulevard, until December 2. The play focuses on a quartet of students from

a Montreal private high school, in which 15-yearold Dariya (Michaela Di Cesare), who does a small favour to class stud Drew (Patrick Keeler) by providing answers to an upcoming class exam. Infatuated with Drew, Dariya is willing to bow down to Drew’s version of showing his gratitude to her, which is more of a sexual nature. However, when expressing that sense of gratitude in a sexual manner extends

between Dariya and Drew’s classmates Josh (Laurent Pitre) and Ben (Patrick Emmanuel Abellard), things begin to spiral out of control between the four, and involves everything from blackmail, to threats of violence, to peer pressure, to sexual behavior that borders on the scandalous. The 75-minute play begins rather innocently, but dissolves into so much sexual tension and human desperation with a great deal of simplicity and humour. The acting by the quartet that makes up the cast is riveting, and brings out issues that teens handle amongst themselves within the sanctity of a private school – sometimes beyond their reach of comprehension -- with a great deal of force and authenticity. As well, the play is filled with a great deal of explicit and disturbing content, and is recommended for audiences 16 years of age and over. Tickets for “Gratitude” are $20, $18 for senior and $15 for students and can be purchased by calling 514-8493378 or online at: www.mainlinetheatre.ca/e n/spectacles/gratitude . *** Have you ever wondered what it is really like for an aspiring stand-up comedian goes through in order to get their big break and be discovered by the industry, which would eventually lead to large-scale success and fame? Starting next Friday, November 30, Amazon’s Prime Video will present a six-part documentary series called “Inside Jokes” for its customers in
Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, as they will get a first-hand look at an up and coming comic’s road to stardom. The series will focus on seven New York and L.A.based comedians – Rosebud Baker, Robert Dean, Kellen Erskine, Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Alzo Slade and Daphnique Springs – as they go through the exhaustive process towards their quest of being those select few to perform at the prestigious New Faces showcase at this past year’s Just For Laughs festival. New Faces is regarded as one of the most important launch pads for comedic talent today, and has been responsible for discovering such popular comics as Gabriel Iglesias, Colin Jost, Gary Gulman and Chelsea Peretti. As well, viewers will get an unprecedented behindthe-scenes look at how these seven comics prepare and hone their acts regularly at home, during their day jobs, and on countless comedy club stages. “Inside Jokes” will be available for streaming through the Amazon Prime Video app, free downloading to mobile devices for Amazon members, and through www.PrimeVideo.com in 2019. *** The Plattsburgh-based Mountain Lake PBS station is inviting its Montreal viewers to an exclusive screening of Ken Burns’ latest documentary feature about the famed Mayo Clinic called “The Mayo Clinic: Faith/Hope/Science” on December 4 at the Jeanne Sauve House, located at 1514 Doctor Penfield; it begins with the serving of refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the screening at 7 p.m. Following the screening, there will be an open discussion about the Mayo Clinic and its 150-year legacy of innovative health care and patient care with Dr. Claude Deschamps, a graduate of the University of Montreal, who was once the Mayo Clinic’s Chief of Surgery and is currently President and CEO of the UVM Health Network Medical Group; it will be moderated by Thom Hallock, who is host of the newsmagazine program “Mountain Lake Journal” that airs on Mountain Lake PBS. eal estate development in Montréal's Quartier des spectacles - Comprising two towers, 51 and 53 storeys high, this flagship project will have access points on Jeanne-Mance, De Bleury and SainteCatherine streets. Marketing of the approximately 1,000 condo properties and 500 rental units will begin in February 2019, and construction is due to start by the end of 2019. “We are proud to be building a distinctive, avant-garde property that will help enhance the urban fabric of this booming arts and culture district," said Devimco Immobilier President Serge Goulet. "With this landmark project, we intend to maintain the Devimco tradition of creating a living environment with mixed uses that will serve project residents as well as visitors to this highly popular part of Montréal," he added. capital fund, is pleased that this ambitious project, which promises to attract tens of thousands of Quebecers and tourists alike, is coming together on one of the most strategic sites of Montréal's entertainment district: "We displayed vision in acquiring the former Spectrum land and other adjacent lots, and the outcome today is that we are part of another structure-enhancing project for Montréal that will help drive the local economy," Mr. Bélanger said. "As a reminder of the glory days of the Spectrum, we plan to incorporate some commemorative items, including a collection from the legendary concert venue's archives." Pierre Pelletier, Senior Vice-President, Opportunity and Development Funds, Fiera Properties, remarked: "We are enthusiastic about our partnership in this major project, which promises to be a true masterpiece: an emblematic building complex in the Quartier des spectacles." Designed in collabora-
tion with the architectural firm Lemay, MAESTRIA will be a prestigious project inspired by the arts and culture vibe of the Quartier des spectacles. Daniel Arbour, Senior Partner, Lemay, describes it as "a nod in the direction of the Quartier des spectacles, a project with a powerful identity and a unique signature, with the two tall towers seemingly in motion, like a pair of tango dancers." He added: "The design includes, at the 25th-storey level of the towers, the highest walkway between two buildings ever to be built in Montréal, where residents will enjoy a prime view onto every major event held in the Place des Festivals below." The plans also call for a mini-plaza for adjacent retailers, which could be used to host cultural events. lthough Sun Youth was founded as a sports and recreation organization for the disadvantaged youth in 1954, it didn’t take long for the community group to start offering food assistance to it beneficiaries. Coaches were noticing that some of their young layers lacked the sufficient energy to perform well and realized that these kids weren’t getting the proper nutrition at home because their parents had a hard time making ends
meet. It was then that Sun Youth started handing out food hampers to the less fortunate families in their neighbourhood. The next logical step would be to tackle hunger during the Holiday season. The Sun Youth kids took it upon themselves to collect food in their neighbourhood to be able to prepare Holiday hampers for the families in need, which there were many back when the Plateau Mont-Royal was a rather disadvantaged sec-

Their food drive was so successful that they had enough food on their hands to be able to feed the poor beyond the Holidays and through the cold winter months. Nowadays, Sun Youth still counts on the generosity of its donors to provide food assistance for the Holidays while being able to store enough food before Christmas to support its clientele during the first months of the year. The organization is looking for donations of non-perishable food, hygiene products and also new toys for children 12 years and under. Those interested in organizing food drives for Sun Youth may contact the organization to receive posters and also schedule a pickup once the food drive is over. If you are in a situation where you would need help for the Holidays, you can go directly to Sun Youth’s new service center located at 6700, Parc Avenue, Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and noon or between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm with a proof of address, a proof of income and identification documents for all household members. No appointment is required to register and only one basket is allowed per family, regardless of the organization providing the food hamper. Registrations are ongoing but those interested should reserve their sport as soon as possible. The Christmas basket distribution itself will take place from mid-December right until Christmas Eve.

Record sales expected in Quebec's residential real estate market in 2018 and 2019
T
he Quebec Federation of Real Estate Boards (QFREB) presented its 2018 results and unveiled its 2019 forecast for Quebec's residential real estate market at its 8th annual Fenêtre sur le marché conference, presented in cooperation with Desjardins. Portrait of Quebec in 2018 The Quebec residential real estate market already achieved record sales in 2017, and that record will be shattered in 2018 with the Centris system exceeding the 86,000 transaction mark. All census metropolitan areas (CMAs) in the province except Trois-Rivières are on track to post growth in the number of transactions this year. "With a 5% increase in sales, Quebec is performing well in the residential real estate market compared to other provinces," explained Paul Cardinal, QFREB market analysis manager. "Western Canada is experiencing a significant decline in activity, particularly in British Columbia, with a 23% drop to date in 2018. Ontario sales are down too, with an 18% decrease. As for property prices, Quebec is turning in the best performance with a 5% increase, all categories combined." With respect to market
conditions, it is a seller's market in the Montreal and Gatineau CMAs, while buyers have more bargaining power in the Quebec City, Sherbrooke, and Saguenay CMAs. In Trois-Rivières — still the most affordable area for the purchase of a property — the market is in balance. Montreal region leads the way Montreal's real estate market continues to outperform the rest of the province. In addition to record sales in 2018, time to sale is falling sharply, prices are increasing steadily, and bidding above list price is common in some sectors. In terms of total sales, condominiums are the hottest category, but "plexes" are seeing the best price growth. "Abundant condominium construction in recent years has not lowered prices as some observers feared," said Mr. Cardinal. "Demand has held strong in the resale market, as reflected by the 15% increase in sales in this segment to date in 2018." Revenge of the suburbs "Compared to 2017, when we saw strong sales growth on the Island of Montreal, the suburbs— particularly the South Shore and the Laval region—are now doing the
best, with increases of 12% and 7% respectively to date in 2018. The North Shore comes in just ahead of the Island of Montreal, with a 4% increase in sales," said Mr. Cardinal. Bidding over list price is very common in all property categories, but particularly for plexes, with 17% of sales closing at higher than list price. Overbidding is most prevalent in Outremont, Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Plateau-Mont-Royal, the Southwest, and the West Island. 2019 forecast for Quebec A strong labour market, rising disposable income, and high consumer confidence will boost home sales next year. The
QFREB expects 2019 to start with a bang for the residential real estate market, with activity gradually slowing in the second semester due to steadily rising borrowing costs. The five-year mortgage rates posted by the main financial institutions will continue to climb, adding half a percentage point to end 2019 at around 6%. Ultimately, the QFREB expects a slight 1% increase in the number of transactions in 2019, for a new record of 87,650 sales. The median price of a single-family home is expected to increase by 3%, to $257,000. Greater Montreal in 2019 The QFREB expects
Montreal's residential real estate market to kick into high gear and perform slightly better than the province as a whole next year, due in part to steadier population growth as net migration rises. As a result, the number of transactions in the Montréal CMA will hit a new high of 47,600 in 2019. Price growth will also be a little steadier than elsewhere in Quebec. We anticipate a 4% increase in the median price of a single-family home, to $332,000. For condominiums—for which market conditions have tightened dramatically over the past year— we expect a median price increase of 3%, to $263,000.

Jumping Rope
here are many benefits of jumping rope. Boxers; Including kids and adults in the Trans4m Fitness KidzBo and the adult FITBOXE Fitness Boxing classes use jump rope as a way to improve Cardio Respiratory fitness, train the Aerobic energy pathway and when jumping with higher intensity, incinerate calories, develop better timing and foot/hand coordination. A fast jumping pace taxes the Anaerobic energy system, for an even greater Cardio effect and energy expenditure. Feel the burn! A Jump Rope is a very inexpensive (starting at $34/rope), so everyone can “jump” on board. There is some technique involved, but the K.I.S.S. philosophy fits well at the beginner level of Jump Rope training. You can layer up to very extreme fast paced high intensity, one skill at a time.
All you really need is a rope; space to jump and a little technical instruction can go a long way. Pick a rope length that’s the right fit. Follow these pointers for good jump rope technique • Lightly (hop) jump on the balls of your feet • Keep a slight flex in your knees as you jump • You only need hop 1cm to 2cm off the floor surface to get over the rope • Keep your elbows down and close to your sides • Use your wrists with a slight whip action to turn the rope, not your arms • Look forward and keep your head up as you jump • Stay relaxed in your upper body and try not to tense up • Keep your shoulder blades retracted and back straight • Your breathing should be even and controlled You can reach Peter for more tips on fitness and training the West Island studio or on-line at www.trans4m.me (514)429-1533 See ad below

great many people, approximately one in four, suffer needlessly from irrational fears that prevent them from living normal lives. Life is not the same if for example you cannot fly, approach a dog or cat, take an elevator or swim. Those around you, family and friends may be affected as well. In these cases, the subconscious mind has made an erroneous connection between a normally harmless situation and danger, in which case your primal instinct to survive kicks in and all bets are off. This is known as the fight or flight reflex and is your subconscious minds way of protecting you from that perceived danger – but in the case of a phobia there is no danger, it is a false alarm! An extreme example of this would be the fear of dust, amathophobia which
I have in fact encountered and there are a great many more. If there is something you would like to do in life but cannot because of fear you can be free of it! Through hypnotherapy, I can retrain your subconscious to cut the fear connection between that scary object or situation so the fight or flight reflex remains off, no alarm sounds, so the rush of adrenalin, sweating raised heart rate and tensing of the body never occurs. The therapy is very focused and targets only the false fear, the persons normal fight or flight reflex is unaffected for those genuine situations where it may indeed be needed, such as jumping out of the way of a car when the requirement to survive is immediate and paramount. David Bernstein C.H. is a clinical hypnotherapist in Pointe Claire and can be reached at www.davidbhypnosis.com davidbhypnosis@gmail.com or 514-249-1907.

Always Look On Are you frustrated with your the Bright Side of social media marketing? Life by Eric Idle R Book review
W
By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca
hen you think of Eric Idle, what q u i c k l y comes to mind is his years as a member of the legendary British comedy team Monty Python. With his hard-to-miss nasal voice and pointy face, Idle made his presence felt in a bunch of classic, oftenrecited Python sketches, such as “Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink”, “Spam” and the Australian Bruces. And as a solo act, Idle has distinguished himself even further, with his cult classic spoof of the Beatles “The Rutles”, his performance in a modern dress version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado”, the hit 1990 comedy movie “Nuns on the Run”, and as the creator of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy “Spamalot”. As well, Idle has deftly applied his comedic talents as a singer-songwriter, responsible for putting together many of Monty Python’s bestloved ditties. However, the one song that Idle will forever be associated with is “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. What began as a quick solution to end the Python’s 1979 movie “Life of Brian” on a positive, upbeat note (while the title character and many of his followers are meeting their fates by crucifixion) is now a song that has worldwide cult status, and is always performed by Idle to close out any live performance he does (it’s even one of the most requested funeral songs in Britain). So when Idle decided to
18
recount his life story in book form, it was only fitting that he choose his best remembered song for the title of his recently published autobiography (or “sortabiography”, as he puts it in his inimitable, self-deprecating manner). Idle was born in 1942 in County Durham, England as Eric Idle (“We couldn’t afford a second name,” he glibly writes). He experienced personal tragedy early in life; at the age of three, his father, who served with the RAF since 1941 as part of a bomber crew and survived the entire war, was killed in a road accident in 1945, as he was riding in a truck on his way home for Christmas (he actually died on Christmas Eve). At the age of seven, Idle was placed in a boarding school called the Royal Orphanage (or “Ophny”, as he and his classmates referred to it as). And the chapter that deals with his time as a schoolboy at the “Ophny” during the highly austere post-war period in Britain almost reads like something out of a Charles Dickens novel. However, with show business in his blood (his great-grandfather was a music hall manager and circus ringmaster), Idle entered Cambridge University in the mid-1960s and immediately joined the legendary Footlights Club, and soon began to write and perform in several of the club’s popular comedy revues, following in the footsteps of such memorable predecessors Jonathan Miller, Peter Cook, Graham Chapman and John Cleese. He even served a term as President of the Footlights Club, where he successfully fought for the right
for women to join the club. However, it was in 1969 that he landed with the comedy troupe that he will forever be associated with: Monty Python. And it’s his years with Python that takes up the majority of Idle’s very entertaining memoir. Through his wealth of anecdotes, Idle recounts every aspect of what made Python such unforgettable comedy legends, and his role in that development, from the unorthodox writing sessions; to the creation of some of the group’s best known sketches and songs; to the soggy, distasteful conditions of filming “Holy Grail” in Scotland (where they also had the use of one castle, and used every inch of it for all of their castle scenes); to the controversy surrounding “Life of Brian”; the overwhelming popularity they had in the U.S. as of the mid-70s; and the number of Python reunion tours, which climaxed on a grand scale during their series of final live shows at the O2 in London during the summer of 2014. And there is a sizeable local angle to Monty Python’s rising fame during the 70s, as Idle gives Canadian fans their due towards the group gaining cult status in North America. “The Canadians were nuts about Python. They had been watching the TV show since very early on, and there had been mass protests outside CBC when they tried to take it off the air. These fans were crazy,” he writes in the book.
