New vocation for the Grand Séminaire W The magnificent complex of the Grand Séminaire will become the Campus du Fort de la Montagne

ell, in strict terms, a renewed vocation, since –according to the director of the site, Fr. Guy

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

Guindon– the Order of the Sulpicians was always committed to educational work, since the beginnings of the French settlement in Montreal. This week Fr. Guindon met with members of the Peter McGill Community Council to inform the residents of the plans for the historic area, as well as to hear suggestions from the downtown neighbours. Renamed the Campus du Fort de la Montagne, the site will comprise five distinct educational institutions: The Grand Seminary itself and the Theological Institute dedicated to the training of priests and theologians,

the Collège de Montréal, a private Catholic high school, indeed the oldest high school in Montreal. These two are already located there. In addition to them, Centennial Academy, a private high school, and Centennial College, a private Cegep, and a public elementary school, will also be part of the campus, thus covering almost all levels of education (the need for a pre-school establishment was mentioned by one neighbour, but that doesn't depend on the campus administration). The project seems a win-win situation: Fr. Guindon points to the

fact that, keeping this site, much of it classified as heritage buildings, could not be done by the Sulpicians alone. On the other hand, Centennial was looking for a suitable place for its high school and college students, and the creation of a public primary school in the area had long been a demand by residents in the Peter McGill district. The complex would then contain religious and secular schools, reflecting the diversity of the neighbourhood. In addition to the conversion of the site into a new hub for students of different ages and backgrounds, what Fr.

Guindon calls "an intergenerational campus," some of the existing facilities, particularly the green space comprising some of the oldest trees in the city, a soccer field, and a small basin, could also become accessible to the public. However, this access will be subject to some restrictions (limited to daytime only). This proposed new park, however, depends on the result of negotiations with the City of Montreal, since it would require maintenance, security, and lighting. To plan for its new vocation, which is to last for the next fifty years, the

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn • December 15, 2018

site has been divided into 14 zones: the Seminary and the Institute of Theology in zone 1 which is the core of the whole complex, including its beautiful chapel and the crypt that contains the rests of priests buried there since the 17th century. Zone 2 includes the existing Collège de Montréal. Zone 3 will be rented to Centennial Academy (high school) and Centennial College (Cegep). Zone 4 and 5 are historic sites too used by the Collège de Montréal. Zone 6 will host the new public elementary school. continued on Page 7

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. What’s happening in Montreal T wenty eighteen will come to an end in less than three weeks from now, yet organizers at Juste pour rire are getting a jump ahead for its upcoming 37th edition, which will run from July 10 – 28, 2019. At a press conference early last week (December 11) at the TD Gallery on St. Catherine Street West, Patrick Rozon, the festival’s Vice-President of Francophone programming, announced two new shows that will be part of next year’s festival line-up. The first is the “Soirees Carte Blanche” series of galas, which will run from July 16 to 20 at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts. These galas are being carefully crafted between the festival and the six hosts, who are rising stars in the Quebec comedy scene and are making their respective debuts as Juste pour rire gala hosts, in order to offer audiences a unique, complete live comedy experience. These “Soirees Carte Blanche” hosts were revealed to the gathering at the press conference, and they are Katherine Levac (July 16), Philippe Laprise (July 17), Anne-Elisabeth Bosse (July 18), Adib Alkhalidey and Julien Lacroix (July 19) and Jay du Temple (July 20). cois comedian Laurent Paquin, who has been a constant presence at Juste pour rire as a performer and gala host for over 20 years, will star in his own comedy showcase called “Le Cabaret a Laurent” for a two-night, four-performance run at the Monument National Theatre on July 13 and 14. Paquin and a roster of special guests will perform genuine stand-up comedy in an intimate club setting that is inspired by what a typical comedy club setting is like in New York City. Tickets for both the “Soirees Carte Blanche” series and the “Le Cabaret a Laurent” shows can be purchased by calling 514-845-2322 or going online at www.hahaha.com. *** Here’s the latest update regarding homegrown Montreal comedy superstar Sugar Sammy and what he is going to be up to on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the remainder of 2018 and into 2019. First of all, Sammy recently announced a North American tour this January, February and March, which will take him to Chicago, San Jose, Toronto, New York, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Seattle and in September, a two-night engagement

at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. And in France, Sammy’s popularity has grown even further. He has been nominated by Parisien Magazine in the Humour category for 2018’s hottest arts and TV stars (the final list will be unveiled on December 17).

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

He will also perform in the magazine’s annual “Les Etoiles du Parisien” gala telecast, which airs on French television on December 21. He was also chosen in a national survey as one of the top 50 favorite comedians of all time for 2018. He will soon conclude his gig as a judge on the popular reality competition show “La France a un incroyable Talent” (the French version of “America’s Got Talent”), and continue his residency at the prestigious Alhambra Theatre in Paris throughout Decem-

And if you want to give the gift of Sugar Sammy this Christmas, you can buy your choice of a brand new selection of Sugar Sammy merchandise, including copies of his best selling DVDs “You’re Gonna Rire” and “En Francais SVP!” at: www.sugarsammy.com . *** British comedian James Mullinger, who moved to New Brunswick five years ago and has carved out an impressive career as a touring stand-up comedian, feature film writer/producer and publisher of a popular quarterly magazine called “The Maritime Edit”, will hit the road in 2019 with his new cross-Canada tour called “James Mullinger – Almost Canadian”. And Mullinger will make a stop in Montreal during the tour, as he performs his first standup show in Montreal in three years; this time, he will take to the stage of the Theatre SainteCatherine on April 24 starting at 7:30 p.m., as he shares his unique style of storytelling comedy that’s seasoned with the

After successful runs in the U.S., Canada, Europe, China and Mexico,“Dance Me” is a dance spectacular performed by 14 members of the troupe, and is based on the music of the late Montreal singer/songw r i t e r / n o ve l i s t / p o e t Leonard Cohen, who personally approved of the production before his death two years ago. he Montreal Police Service's (SPVM) arson investigators are seeking the population’s help to identify and locate a suspect who placed an explosive device in a rural mailbox, which exploded on June 6th, 2018 at approximately 7:10 pm on Senneville Road in Senneville. The device exploded when the victim took the package from the mailbox. The victim suffered minor injuries. A $5,000 reward is offered through Sun Youth Organization to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect responsible for arson. This reward expires on May 20th, 2019. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the SPVM at 514-3931133. Sun Youth's reward program Citizens interested in the solving of certain criminal investigations do-

They are offered for a limited period of time after which, as decided by the donor, they are renewed, or the money is returned to the donor or used in other crime prevention activities like in providing assistance to victims of criminal acts in particular. Sun Youth is the sole manager of these rewards. This year, why don't you opt for something local and surprise your loved ones for Christmas This year I had the chance to taste a variety of local products including gins and diverse liqueurs. My coup de coeur was Artist in Residence Distillery. This is an avant garde artisanal distillery located in Gatineau, Quebec. They possess the biggest production capacity in Canada in their category and all their products are sourced from local ingredients. As Outaouais’ first micro-distillery, Artist in Residence abides by the principles of artisanal distillation. It starts with dealing with sourcing a local supplier for the primary raw material: corn. Waxwing Bohemian Gin. SAQ # 13811110, $39.75. This gin is inspired by the migration route of the waxwing bird. This species , travels across large desert plains as well as small city gardens of Canada and the United States in search of berries to relish. The Waxwing Bohemian Gin is crafted from 8 fragrances: Juniper berries, coriander, lemon peel, Angelica archangelica, licorice, quassia bark, mountain ash berries and rosehip berries I am not gin lover but found this gin to be be fruity and perfumed. Its aroma is reminiscent of a cross between Paco Rabanne and Dolce Gabbana.Creamy with and almost oily texture, it has lovely floral verbena tones with a long and persistent finale reminiscent of con-

re you or a loved one considering a move to a retirement home or senior community? Many Canadians have either already made the move or are considering such a move. Some moves are for proactive reasons (i.e. wanting to downsize and enjoy a better quality of life) while other moves are for reactive reasons (i.e. physical or cognitive issues, death of a spouse, safety and security, etc.). Regardless of the reason for wanting to transition into a retirement home, the search for the perfect residence can be stressful and overwhelming. Like any important decision, it takes time, research and preparation to make the best choice in choosing the right retirement home or senior community. Here are 5 important questions you should ask when looking for a retirement home or senior community: 1. What level of care will I need? When looking to move into a retirement residence, it is vital to do the research and find out what services it provides. Each retirement residence provides a certain level of serv-

ice. It can range from independent living, assisted living and memory care. The level of service depends on each residence or community.

2. How is the residence managed? Find out the staff to resident ratio. Ask if they are a certified residence. Check to see how the staff interacts with residents during your tour. Is there a positive atmosphere? Find out about their nursing care abilities and how often a doctor visits the residence. Another important aspect is what safety and security features are available. 3. What services are provided and what will cost you extra? Do not shy away from financial questions. You need to know exactly what is included with your rent and how much services cost, how you can terminate a lease and what financial penalties may apply after ending a contract early. 4. What are the types of activities that are provided? In many cases, the social lives of residents improve once a move is made into a retirement home. Most residences have a monthly calendar of activities. Ask

for this calendar and inquire about the various activities that are offered.

5. Is there a referral agency or counsellor that can guide you through the process? Referral agencies or housing counsellors, such as Lianas Services, can be a tremendous source of support and guidance. Very often, their services are provided for free to families as their fees can be covered by sponsored senior communities. Their experienced advisors can help navigate the many challenges of transitioning into a senior residence and they can help ask the tough questions when narrowing down the search for the perfect senior community.

SHOPLIFTERS: A very peculiar family

W

hat is a family? That's a question with no easy answer, or rather, a question that in recent times has elicited new responses, away from traditional notions. "Shoplifters" directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, was the surprise winner of the Palme d'Or at this year's edition of the Cannes Festival. Precisely the question about what constitutes a family is underlying in this movie which starts by showing Osamu (Lily Franky) and a boy, Shota (Jyo Kairi), diligently shoplifting in a supermarket. On their way home, they notice a girl who seems hungry and distressed, without much thinking they take her to their place with the intention of giving her some food. Eventually, the little girl called Yuri but who the family will call Lin (Miyu Sasaki) will be

The film presents a very unusual view of Japanese society: marginalized people, trying to survive by petty crime and living outside the regular institutions and norms. At times the spectator may feel disoriented by the relations among the members of the family, but the pieces of the puzzle would eventually be put together as we approach the end of the movie. Shampoo Bars are the best way to clean your dog’s coat without the mess and toxicity of liquid shampoos. See our article on Zero Waste Shampoo. Instructions: 1.Wet dog thoroughly using warm water. 2. Rub the bar directly on your wet dog’s coat. 3. Massage into a foamy lather, avoiding the eyes. 4. And Rinse! 5. We also recommend the Apple Cider Vinegar Hair

he things we consume are the “stuff” that fuels our body. Nothing is more personal or more contested than common ground about what is the best approach. In the years that I have been working in the fitness industry, there has been hundreds of “Break Through” diets and more “Earth Shattering” supplements to hit the market, than I could remember. These often Pseudoscience based claims that sound too good to be true, almost always are. So what to believe? Basically; Scientifically analysed, unbiased research based information, presented by Nutritional professionals (in Food Science), like the Dentitions of Canada (United States) and the Federal Government (Canada, United States). Programs such as Canada’s Food Guide’s and My Plate in the United States provide factual information and guidance on the right way to help you to

make healthy food choices. You need to eat a variety of foods (pick lot’s of colours), and unless you have “special dietary needs. Following the Food Guide ensures a well rounded healthy diet. Here’s the catch….”Quantity”. If you’re metabolism requires 1500 Calories per day and you consume 2500 Calories, the extra Calories are going to be stored as body fat. Over time the extra body fat builds up and can lead to health concerns. When it comes to exercise “ You can’t run from a poor diet”. A great “Boot-Camp workout” that burns 500 Calories doesn’t insulate you from poor dietary habits. Fad & Supplement based dietary solutions are often short lived, ineffective and sometimes no use at all. Stick to real foods as your base of nutrition and eat what you need. If you drift away from a healthful diet (Cheat), don’t stress, just get back on track. Peter Churchill C.S.C.S. Fitness & Lifestyle Expert www.trans4m.me Conditionnement Trans4m Fitness

old laser therapy, also called low level laser therapy (LLLT), soft therapy and laser acupuncture, is used in the treatment of a variety of health conditions, and is now used to treat arthritis. This low-intensity laser therapy is said to reduce the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Arthritis has many variations, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, but the symptoms of arthritis consistently involve swelling, stiffness and pain of the joints. Cold laser therapy has been used as an alternative pain relief method for over four decades by physicians worldwide. There have been more than 2,500 international clinical studies on cold laser therapy since 1967, most of which have proven this type of laser therapy to be effective for pain relief. This is particularly relevant for arthritis patients, since the arthritic inflammation is painful, and worsens over time. How cold laser therapy works Cold laser therapy is based on the process of light absorption into the cells, also known as photobiotherapy. This stimulates protein synthesis, as well as cell metabolism, improving cell health and ensuring proper cell functionality. The lasers used in cold laser therapy are low-intensity, and are hardly comparable to laser types used in other treatments, which intentionally use heat and heat damage to be effective. Therefore, cold laser treatment poses no risk of cutting or burning on the

treated skin area. Instead, wavelengths of light interact with the tissue to stimulate the cells of the target area, and dramatically accelerate its healing process. This function helps eliminate inflammation and pain caused by arthritis. The absorption rate of the lasers is so low that cold laser treatment is safe and painless. Procedure Cold laser therapy involves hand-held devices that emit nonthermal (meaning nonheated, hence "cold") photons of light that penetrate all the skin layers to the target area. Once the laser beam reaches its destination, it is absorbed by the cell, which has elements that interact with the light, transforming it into energy. The laser beam is aimed at the treatment area between 30 seconds and several minutes, depending on the severity and size of the condition. As the cells absorb the laser light, they supposedly respond to the activity by healing the damaged tissue, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. Advantages The technology of cold laser therapy uses such low-intensity laser beams that there is no risk for complications or side effects. The procedure is painless and has no downtime. Patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after one treatment session For more information please call: 514-244-0799 Health Center Dorval 514-244-0799 1564 Chemin Herron, #106. early 35 years ago, Stephen King – writing under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman – published a novel called Thinner, in which an individual was put under a curse by a Gypsy elder when he accidentally ran over and killed the elder’s mother with his car. The consequence of the curse was that the protagonist rapidly kept on losing weight until he got thinner and thinner. The rest of the story was taken up with him trying to find that Gypsy elder, so that he can break the curse before he gets even more thinner and prematurely wastes away. In King’s latest novel (which is published as a novella) called Elevation, he takes that same main plotline (but without the Gypsy), but this time, puts more heart and a reaffirming approach to it. The story takes place in the town of Castle Rock, Maine and its protagonist is resident Scott Carey. One day, he visits his friend – and town doctor – Bob Ellis to confide with him about a mysterious condition he has: Scott is rapidly losing weight, yet he is not getting visibly thinner. Realizing he will one day get to the point where his weight will get to zero (which he declares as “Zero Day”), Scott decides to come to terms with a running feud he has

However, something mysterious, yet genuinely kindhearted, happens between the two towards the end of the race, which occurs during a driving rainstorm, that puts a positive change of heart between the two as a result, and contributes to Scott achieving a sense of personal elevation before he reaches that “Zero Day”, which is happening By Stuart Nulman much quicker than he anmtltimes.ca ticipates.
