Montreal opening a winter homeless shelter

A

public outcry arose when late last November on a cold and frigid night, Christian, a homeless man, was unable to find any place to go with his dog Buddy, who was shivering badly in the record breaking temperature of -16C and ended up dying in his arms that night. The City of Montreal has already been taking steps towards tackling the problem of homelessness and has just announced they will be

opening a special winter shelter for those living on the streets, hopefully within two weeks. It is good news indeed, but unfortunately too late for Buddy. According to Montreal city Councilor Rosannie Filato, who is responsible for the homeless, they are looking for a place where people can eventually go for more than just a night in a warm bed. The old Royal Victoria Hospital building, where they could open up at least 80 beds

for now, is seriously being considered. The plan is to

have an area for men and another area for women and a place for those with their animals. The Welcome Hall Mission, Maison du Pere, Accueil Bonneau and the Old Brewery Mission will work together to manage it. It estimated there are 2,500 to 3,500 homeless people on the streets in Montreal on any given

night - and why the city's goal goes beyond just the 80 beds. They are hoping to offer a wider range of services, working together with community groups and health officials. Last March, Montreal announced a $7.8 million project to improve the plight of the homeless. It includes plans for a new 'wet shelter' (where alcoholics living on the streets

Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate • December 22, 2018

Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. ontreal rock band The Damn Truth’s newest music video, which is of their song “Devlish Folk”, has a tragic, yet poignant story behind it. The video, which took nearly two years to complete, was filmed by Parisborn filmmaker Mikael Theimer, and was shot in black and white. It starkly portrays the difficult dayto-day existence of a group of panhandlers and street kids who make the mean streets of Montreal their home. However, during the filming of the video, Jake -one of the street kids whom Mikael and the members of the band befriended -- tragically died from a drug overdose. Obviously shaken up by Jake’s tragic death, the group wasn’t sure if they should complete the work on the video. However, during a recent tour stop in Calgary, they met with Jake’s biological father and he encouraged them to finish the video in his son’s memory. To make a long story short, the group and Mikael did complete the video. And to serve Jake’s memory well, and raise aware-

ness of the plight of street kids in Montreal, the band decided to start a fundraising campaign to benefit the organization Dans La Rue to coincide with the video’s release. The reason behind the band’s decision was that Dans La Rue, whose mission is to help homeless kids get off the streets, offered a safe haven to Jake and his friends. As well, Dans La Rue held a memorial service in Jake’s memory following his untimely passing. If you want to make a donation to Dans La Rue as part of The Damn Truth’s fundraising campaign, go to www.danslarue.org/en/donations. *** If you need a family-oriented activity for this holiday season, then check out the Stewart Museum on Ile Sainte-Helene, as it is currently presenting a series of activities and programs based on the classic fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast” from now until January 6. A special visit to the christmas basket distribution at Sun Youth!

A special visit at Sun Youth’s Christmas Basket Distribution: New Montreal Police Director Sylvain Caron (on the right) alongside Sun Youth’s Director of Crime Prevention and Victim Services Helio Galego (on the left) and the organization’s cofounder and Executive Vice-President Sid Stevens (center). O

n Wednesday, December 19th, the distribution of Christmas baskets continued at Sun Youth with a massive support from the forces of law and order! As usual, the organization was able to count on the support of groups of volunteers, including officers from the Montreal Police (SPVM) to distribute food baskets and toys to thousands of families in need. By the end of the 2018 Christmas basket distribution, approximately 5,000 fam-

ilies will have received perishable and non-perishable food, hygiene products and some surprises. It is also some 5000 new toys that will have been given to children 12 years and under. The relationship between Sun Youth and the Montreal Police is nothing new. Indeed, the Montreal police officers were among the first partners of the organization in the 1950’s. Even today, the SPVM collaborates with Sun Youth year-round, notably with the organiza-

tion’s Bike Patrol, its rewards program (set up in 1991 thanks to the kind collaboration of the SPVM) as well as other special SPVM projects. It is with pleasure that Sun Youth welcomed the new director of the SPVM, Mr. Sylvain Caron, who came to lend a helping hand to distribute the Christmas baskets. Director Caron is a long-time friend of Sun Youth and was not on his first Christmas helping the organization.

5 important questions you should ask when looking for a retirement home

A

By Matt Del Vecchio mtltimes.ca

re you or a loved one considering a move to a retirement home or senior community? Many Canadians have either already made the move or are considering such a move. Some moves are for proactive reasons (i.e. wanting to downsize and enjoy a better quality of life) while other moves are for reactive reasons (i.e. physical or cognitive issues, death of a spouse, safety and security, etc.). Regardless of the reason for wanting to transition into a retirement home, the search for the perfect residence can be stressful and overwhelming. Like any important decision, it takes time, research and preparation to make the best choice in choosing the right retirement home or senior community. Here are 5 important questions you should ask when looking for a retirement home or senior community: 1. What level of care will I need? When looking to move into a retirement residence, it is vital to do the research and find out what services it provides. Each retirement residence provides a certain level of serv-

ice. It can range from independent living, assisted living and memory care. The level of service depends on each residence or community.

2. How is the residence managed? Find out the staff to resident ratio. Ask if they are a certified residence. Check to see how the staff interacts with residents during your tour. Is there a positive atmosphere? Find out about their nursing care abilities and how often a doctor visits the residence. Another important aspect is what safety and security features are available. 3. What services are provided and what will cost you extra? Do not shy away from financial questions. You need to know exactly what is included with your rent and how much services cost, how you can terminate a lease and what financial penalties may apply after ending a contract early. 4. What are the types of activities that are provided? In many cases, the social lives of residents improve once a move is made into a retirement home. Most residences have a monthly calendar of activities. Ask

for this calendar and inquire about the various activities that are offered.

5. Is there a referral agency or counsellor that can guide you through the process? Referral agencies or housing counsellors, such as Lianas Services, can be a tremendous source of support and guidance. Very often, their services are provided for free to families as their fees can be covered by sponsored senior communities. Their experienced advisors can help navigate the many challenges of transitioning into a senior residence and they can help ask the tough questions when narrowing down the search for the perfect senior community.

About the author. Matt Del Vecchio is the founder and president of Lianas Services. He is a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging (CPCA). Matt and the Lianas Senior Advisors assist families with retirement residence searches and transition support. www.lianasservices.com 514622-8074

olidays are here! Can you feel the excitement? Or perhaps your anticipation has been creeping up inside as tension, nervousness and anxiety. Not many of us can float around calm and collected as we shop, clean, work, prepare, cook, clean more, decorate and organize. Finding patience in the ice and snow during traffic and parking madness can be a feat of futility. We breathe. We try to relax. We attempt the art of gratefulness. Sometimes holding it all together is more challenging than not. "What have I forgotten? Will family time be flawless or fury? I've checked my list twice, but am I still forgetting something? I've spent so much already, how will I afford all this?!?" A part of us just wants to crawl back under the covers and hibernate through it all. Chinese philosophy describes yin and yang as complementary forces that, when in balance, will bring us peace. Winter is a yin season, a dark, soft inward pull that craves for inner reflection, rest and sleep...Yet we are expected to force the yang up and out with doing, social time

and activity. Finding a 'peace' of yin this season will balance the nervous system. Here are a few tips to Keep Calm. Box Breathing This can be done anywhere. Walking, while doing dishes or sitting quietly with your eyes closed works best. Slow, deep, controlled breathing will bring your mind and body into a rhythmic balance of serenity. Inhale for a count or four. Hold your breath for 4. Exhale slowing for 4 and hold for 4. Start again. Repeat until calm. You'll be pleasantly surprised how a simple technique can transform your nerves. Music If you are a music lover, be sure to blare your favourite tunes this season and give your body a little wiggle while you work. Something about Christmas music lightens the load of obligation. Lavender Carry Lavender Essential Oil in your pocket or purse. One inhale can go a long way to calm, soothe and relieve stress. Tea Time Tea isn't just a warm drink, it can be a ritual to rebalance. The practice of taking the time to sit down

alone, or with a loved one for a 'time-out', can become a break well needed, and well deserved. So, take a small rest, everything will be right where you left it when you return recharged and relaxed. Simply steep a few slices of fresh ginger, a squeeze of lemon, a dash of cayenne and some real honey. Gratitude List Beside your 'to-do' and 'tobuy' lists, keep a gratitude list. Write down 10 things you are grateful for, as a reminder of what's important to you. This helps to gain appreciation and is helpful reminder of what really matters. Breathe, dance and melt that stress away!

he things we consume are the “stuff” that fuels our body. Nothing is more personal or more contested than common ground about what is the best approach. In the years that I have been working in the fitness industry, there has been hundreds of “Break Through” diets and more “Earth Shattering” supplements to hit the market, than I could remember. These often Pseudoscience based claims that sound too good to be true, almost always are. So what to believe? Basically; Scientifically analysed, unbiased research based information, presented by Nutritional professionals (in Food Science), like the Dentitions of Canada (United States) and the Federal Government (Canada, United States). Programs such as Canada’s Food Guide’s and My Plate in the United States provide factual information and guidance on the right way to help you to

make healthy food choices. You need to eat a variety of foods (pick lot’s of colours), and unless you have “special dietary needs. Following the Food Guide ensures a well rounded healthy diet. Here’s the catch….”Quantity”. If you’re metabolism requires 1500 Calories per day and you consume 2500 Calories, the extra Calories are going to be stored as body fat. Over time the extra body fat builds up and can lead to health concerns. When it comes to exercise “ You can’t run from a poor diet”. A great “Boot-Camp workout” that burns 500 Calories doesn’t insulate you from poor dietary habits. Fad & Supplement based dietary solutions are often short lived, ineffective and sometimes no use at all. Stick to real foods as your base of nutrition and eat what you need. If you drift away from a healthful diet (Cheat), don’t stress, just get back on track. Peter Churchill C.S.C.S. Fitness & Lifestyle Expert www.trans4m.me Conditionnement Trans4m Fitness

old laser therapy, also called low level laser therapy (LLLT), soft therapy and laser acupuncture, is used in the treatment of a variety of health conditions, and is now used to treat arthritis. This low-intensity laser therapy is said to reduce the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Arthritis has many variations, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, but the symptoms of arthritis consistently involve swelling, stiffness and pain of the joints. Cold laser therapy has been used as an alternative pain relief method for over four decades by physicians worldwide. There have been more than 2,500 international clinical studies on cold laser therapy since 1967, most of which have proven this type of laser therapy to be effective for pain relief. This is particularly relevant for arthritis patients, since the arthritic inflammation is painful, and worsens over time. How cold laser therapy works Cold laser therapy is based on the process of light absorption into the cells, also known as photobiotherapy. This stimulates protein synthesis, as well as cell metabolism, improving cell health and ensuring proper cell functionality. The lasers used in cold laser therapy are low-intensity, and are hardly comparable to laser types used in other treatments, which intentionally use heat and heat damage to be effective. Therefore, cold laser treatment poses no risk of cutting or burning on the

treated skin area. Instead, wavelengths of light interact with the tissue to stimulate the cells of the target area, and dramatically accelerate its healing process. This function helps eliminate inflammation and pain caused by arthritis. The absorption rate of the lasers is so low that cold laser treatment is safe and painless. Procedure Cold laser therapy involves hand-held devices that emit nonthermal (meaning nonheated, hence "cold") photons of light that penetrate all the skin layers to the target area. Once the laser beam reaches its destination, it is absorbed by the cell, which has elements that interact with the light, transforming it into energy. The laser beam is aimed at the treatment area between 30 seconds and several minutes, depending on the severity and size of the condition. As the cells absorb the laser light, they supposedly respond to the activity by healing the damaged tissue, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. Advantages The technology of cold laser therapy uses such low-intensity laser beams that there is no risk for complications or side effects. The procedure is painless and has no downtime. Patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after one treatment session For more information please call: 514-244-0799 Health Center Dorval 514-244-0799 1564 Chemin Herron, #106. Some books that make ideal last minute Christmas gift suggestions Book review

W

ith Christmas just a mere few days away, and you are still scrambling for some gift ideas for a friend, relative or loved one, there is nothing like a book, especially an attractive, illustrated hardcover that could grace any coffee table in the home. Here are four diverse choices that could make it to your lastminute Christmas gift list. *** On and Around Montreal’s Three Mountains: The Green Heart of Montreal by Mackay L. Smith (Infinite Books, $46.95). Veteran author and photographer Mackay L. Smith certainly has a passion for Montreal, its history, and its preserved heritage, and he transcended it into four pictorial tomes that focused on the historical richness of Montreal’s landmarks and districts, whether it be McGill University, Sherbrooke Street or the Golden Square Mile. For his fifth book, Smith has literally centred his focus on the major piece of greenspace that forms the nucleus of the city: Mount Royal. From every direction, Smith gives a richly illustrated history of Mount Royal’s three summits, and the many houses, buildings, structures and monuments that are sprinkled throughout the mountain, and the stories behind them, whether it be the lookouts, the CBC transmitter tower, the Mount Royal Cross, Beaver Lake, the Cartier Monument and St. Joseph’s Oratory, to name a few. Through diligent research (concise, informative texts) and 110 contemporary and historic photos (thanks to the Notman Collection at the McCord Museum), Smith tells a fascinating story of how a dead volcano turned into a much cherished piece of historical greenspace (that was transformed into a much used public park thanks to Frederick Law Olmstead, the same man who developed New York City’s Central Park). A must have volume for Montreal history buffs and former Montreal residents who always enjoyed Mount Royal’s majestic natural beauty all year round. *** Whiskey in A Teacup by Reese Witherspoon (Touchstone, $45). Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon (“Legally Blonde”, “Walk the Line”, “Sweet Home Alabama”) maybe Hollywood royalty these days, but she remains faithful to her down home Deep South roots and values, which were imparted upon her by her grandmother Dorothea, which combined the qualities of beauty and strength. 18

And Ms.Witherspoon has used these values that she learned through her life outside of Hollywood, especially when it comes to raising her family, living her everyday life, cooking and entertaining at home. In her book Whiskey in A Teacup, Ms. Witherspoon, in such aesthetically eyecatching detail, shows how you can live a simple down home life from how to celebrate holidays, to how to enjoy watching the Kentucky Derby, to having your own Southern book club, to home décor, to even a good old fashioned family road trip. And there is a good selection of Ms. Witherspoon’s favorite Southern recipes, where you can make and enjoy such mouth-watering dishes as cornbread chili pie, pecan crusted chicken skewers, mint juleps, thick breakfast biscuits (with or without the gravy) and lemonade stand-style lemonade. Garnished with plenty of beautiful photos, this book

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

is as lovely and charming as Reese Witherspoon herself.

*** Bobby: My Story in Pictures by Bobby Orr (Viking, $37). Throughout his 12year Hall of Fame career in the NHL, Number 4 Bobby Orr never seemed to rest on his laurels. And throughout those 12 years in pro hockey (mostly with the Boston Bruins), Orr set the bar high for a new generation of defencemen, led the Bruins to two Stanley Cup championships, and compiled countless NHL records and Art Ross trophies. A firm believer of the photograph as a means to capture those special moments in one’s life and career, he delved into his vast collection of photos to produce Bobby: My Story in Pictures, a perfect companion volume to his best selling memoir that was published a few years ago. Through many never-seenbefore photographs, the books shows the many faces of the private and public Bobby Orr, from his beginnings growing up in Parry Sound, Ontario, to the beginning of his pro career with the Oshawa

Generals, to reviving a dormant Boston Bruins team, to capping off his career with the Chicago Blackhawks in the late 70s. And of course, no photographic autobiography of Bobby Orr is complete without the iconic photo of Orr taking a flying leap the moment after he scored the winning goal against the St. Louis Blues during the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals. However, he included one photo following that moment that has never been seen, which showed dejected Blues players Glen Hall and Noel Picard moments after Orr scored the winning goal, as his Bruins teammates piled upon him off camera. This book is a wonderful illustrated tribute by the man who defined professional hockey in the modern, post-1967 expansion era, and truly showed a genuine love of the game, even 40 years after he hung up his skates. *** Ernest Hemingway: Artifacts From A Life, edited by Michael Katakis (Scribner, $47). Ernest Hemingway is one of greatest writers in modern American literature, who showed through vivid descriptions and prose that was filled with simple word economy, the glories of the macho life that was filled with fun, adventure and danger, whether it be fighting a war, bull fighting, deep sea fishing, or safari hunting in Africa through the pages of such classic novels like The Old Man and the Sea, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway was not only the living embodiment of his many writings, but was also a complex, troubled individual to boot. Thanks to the Hemingway Collection at the John F. Kennedy Library, this book gives a new face to the literary and personal side of Ernest Hemingway through plenty of rare photos, letters and artifacts, from being an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I; to his early days as a newspaper reporter for the Toronto Star; to being part of the Lost Generation in Paris during the Roaring 20s; to witnessing and reporting the Spanish Civil War and World War II; to relaxing, sporting and fishing in Key West and Havana; to his torturous final years in Ketchum, Idaho, where he tragically died in 1961. This book is the ideal companion that should give readers a better understanding of Ernest Hemingway’s world, and what drove him to write such unforgettable works that were filled with so much machismo and daring adventure.
