Work on the station began last autumn with a 3,000-square-metre forested area near the corner of Highway 40 being cut down. A cry went up by some West Island residents at the time, who were upset after seeing the devastation of the green area and the impact it would have on the quality of life for residents liv-

It is not the only area seeing greenery cut down as close to 200,000 square meters is being cut for the system around the island. Nonetheless, between the Fairview projects and the REM, big change is coming to the area and hopefully the future will be bright.

n Monday, March 25th a crowd rallied outside the Montreal Holocaust Museum in a show of support for a Roma family facing imminent deportation. Monika, a single mother, and her 10-year-old daughter “Alexa”* are facing deportation on Wednesday, March 27th. (*For their

protection, the name of the girl has been modified and only Monika’s first name is being used.) Monika came to Canada as a refugee 10 years ago, at the age of 18. Her daughter, now 10, was 8 months old. Monika and her entire family left Hungary because of the mounting discrimination and violence against Roma people. The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has now given them two weeks to leave the country, in the middle of the school year. The rally took place in front of the Holocaust Museum to highlight the fact that at least 500,000 Roma were killed in Europe during the Holocaust. Neo-Nazi movements targeting Roma have seen a resurgence in the past decades across Eastern Europe. According to a 2014 Harvard study, owing to the establishment of vigilante groups hate crimes against Roma and other minority groups in Hungary increased at an alarming rate over a fiveyear period. Moreover, despite the adoption of European Union (EU) anti-discrimination regulations and laws, the study • March 30, 2019

Monika (blonde right of sign), a single mother, and her 10-year-old daughter “Alexa” concluded that extremist organizations, private individuals, and state officials in Hungary continued to widely and openly discriminate against Roma by a variety of methods. Despite these facts, Monika's appeals to remain in Canada have fallen on deaf ears. In 2013 after a three-and-a-half year wait her refugee claim was refused in a decision which made light of the situation of Roma people in Hungary. Two years later a lawyer put in an application for permanent residence for Monika and

Alexa on humanitarian grounds. However, the lawyer failed to include any evidence and so the file was refused six months later. Then in May last year the CBSA refused a preremoval risk assessment and gave Monika and her daughter a deportation date for July 4th but just before, Monika was informed that the flight was cancelled and it would be rescheduled. By September a new lawyer had put in a new humanitarian application for Monika and her daughter. Nevertheless, on March 13th, 2019 CBSA called Monika in

and told her she would have to leave the country in two weeks, on March 27th. Monika asked if her daughter could finish her school year. The agent refused. Monika and Alexa are now facing impending deportation to Hungary where they have no one and Monika hasn’t lived in 10 years. Canada is the only country Alexa has ever known and her home. The wheels of justice turn slowly and for Monika and Alexa it would appear that they have ground to a halt, barring an act of God, or government agent.

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Daughter’s Sparkle Launches Lip Colour Collection in Support of the Autism Community

M

ontreal makeup artist Charlotte Marie Flannery’s daughter Ariana has inspired another project in support of autism. Ariana’s Sparkle is the new autism awareness lip colour collection launched by Ray of Light Canada. The makeup will be available for purchase through the Ariana’s Sparkle Etsy shop as of World Autism Awareness Day: April 2nd, 2019. At this time last year, Flannery co-created and launched a Swarovski crystal jewelry collection

with local jewelry designer Tracy Gartner. They named this collection Ray Of Light Mtl, inspired by the idea of families finding the light—signifying hope—in what can be a dark place or time in their lives. Now called Ray of Light Canada, its co-founder Flannery is a mother of two children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). With this new collection, she put her experience in the beauty industry to use. Inspired by her daughter Ariana’s continuing love of glittery things, the Ariana’s

Sparkle collection can be worn on its own or over lipstick. “Like most moms, I have many roles—mother, makeup artist and autism advocate are just a few of mine,” explains Flannery. “Ariana’s Sparkle is a project inspired by my daughter that encompasses these roles perfectly.” Available in five shades, Ariana’s Sparkle is a lip product with the shine of a gloss and the wear of a lipstick. The collection is made in Canada, hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and is not tested on animals. to Autism Speaks Canada, 50% of proceeds will go supporting evidencebased research and Family Services Community Grants to address the needs of individuals with ASD and their families. CAQ tables The price of Bill 21 against the parking tickets wearing of is about to jump religious symbols E ven though there has been a massive public outcry, not only in Quebec but also nationally - and even with the English Montreal School Board, one of the largest teacher's union in Quebec, ready to file a legal challenge against it and who just yesterday announced they will not adhere to the ban, Premier of Francois Legault and his CAQ government have tabled Bill 21 today that would ban many of the provinces workers from wearing religious symbols. The proposed ban has even made international headlines, but that seems to have no influence on the Quebec government who has fatuously promised to use the Notwithstanding Clause to stop any legal challenges to Bill 21. On one hand, Premier Legault has stated he wants 'to build an inclusive society for all in Que-

bec' and on the other hand he seeks to divide Quebecers through a discriminatory policy. If Bill 21 is passed, it will forbid public sector employees 'in position of authority' from wearing religious symbols at work - the small consolation being a provision which would allow for employees already working in those public sector positions to continue wearing their religious symbols. According to Simon Jolin-Barrette, CAQ's Immigration, Diversity and Inclusiveness Minister, who tabled the Bill 21 and has stirred up enough controversy of his own since holding the position, when he introduced Bill 9 in early February, indiscriminately throwing out 18,000 immigrant applications without any real justification, "They (elementary and high school teachers, judges, police officers, peace offi-

cers prison guards, crown prosecutors, public servants and speakers of the National Assembly) will still be able to realize their dreams, just not while wearing a religious symbol." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was not able to fully respond to details of the bill as he is waiting to read the exact wording, but he condemned discrimination based on religion and was cited in a CTV report saying, "Canada and indeed Quebec are places where we are a secular society. We respect deeply people's rights and freedom including freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, freedom of religion. It is unthinkable to me that in a free society we would legitimize discrimination against citizens based on their religion."

S

ome may see it as 'cash grab', others may see it as justice served - but drivers who choose to park illegally in Montreal may soon see a significant increase in fines for doing so. Not respecting the following regulations where parking is prohibited, drivers could receive tickets for the infractions which will have them digging much deeper into their pockets to pay them: The present fine for parking illegally on the street will jump from $62 to $78. If your car is found

parked in a reserved lane, the present fine of $150 will increase to a whopping $302. The fine for parking illegally in a designated, disabled parking spot will remain the same at $300. The new proposed parking fines will voted on at City hall on April 15th. The city could collect up to an additional $11 million in revenues this year from illegal parking - if drivers continue doing so at the same frequency. Mayor Valerie Plante said in a CTV report that 'the money will be reinvested

in security and mobility', but she 'would prefer to see drivers respect parking signs to improve safety and traffic flow'.This is the second consecutive year parking fines have been increased, and there is still one big concern not yet fully addressed by the city - and that is the highly confusing parking signs that leave many drivers scratching their heads, not knowing what to do and it is unfair, especially if they receive a ticket when they were led to believe they parked legally.

Working on CBC TV series “Diggstown” an eye opening experience for Montreal actress Shailene Garnett series is that of Iris Beals, the centre’s receptionist/intake worker. “Iris is very clear about the do’s and don’ts of her job and how the centre is run; basically, she runs the show. Without her, the place would fall apart,” she said in a recent phone interview. Filmed on location in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Ms. Garnett believes that she learned a great deal of the hidden history of the province’s Black community while working on Diggstown. “Having the series filmed on location in Nova Scotia made the most sense because it had to be as authentic as possible. (Show creator) Floyd Kane was a lawyer beforehand and he grew up in a town in Nova Scotia where he had no running water. He knew exactly what was going on with the Black community in Nova Scotia, and there was no one better who could have told the story

the back room of the supermarket, which amidst the clutter of cardboard boxes filled with such grocery items as paper towels, laundry detergent, diapers and Oreo cookies, serves as the HQ for the store’s security guards: the tired old school veteran Otto (Michel Perron) and Dom (Laurent Pitre), the rookie whose overzealous determination to catch thieves and convert them to a religious life is just as big as his two-sizes-too-big uniform. During this hectic day at the supermarket’s back room, they match wits with the two shoplifters they caught with the meaty goods: Alma (Ellen David), a tough, brassy purloiner with sharp skills when it By Stuart Nulman comes to the five finger discount, and Phyllis mtltimes.ca (Marie-Eve Perron), her large Montreal supermar- weepy, reluctant newbie ket (which are found, of a partner. “The Shoplifters” deftly quite inconveniently, combines broad comedy, stuffed underneath their skirts). in today’s complex world. The quartet of actors that make up the cast of “The Shoplifters” is one of the best ensembles that I have seen on the Montreal theatre scene in recent years. Each one brings to the table so much talent and comic sensibilities with their respective performances, that saying Michel, Laurent, Ellen and MarieEve complement each other to make this an entertaining night at the theatre is indeed an understatement. And a special shout out goes to young Laurent Pitre, whose performance as Dom the over enthusiastic security guard is a bona fide scene stealer. In fact, his performance is almost reminiscent (if you’re a fan of classic TV sitcoms) of Barney Fife, the equally over enthusiastic deputy sheriff on the classic 60s sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show” (in fact, I was waiting for Dom to show off the one bullet he keeps in his shirt breast pocket for his service revolver, just like Barney Fife did). “The Shoplifters” will definitely steal a lot of laughs from you, as it’s an entertaining example of how comedy can be used to tackle so many social issues that affect us, especially when the “steaks” are that high. Don’t miss it!

National pharmacare to make prescription drugs more accessible and affordable

anadians pay too much for prescription drugs – and that means far too many go without the medicine they need. With Budget 2019, the Government of Canada is taking important first steps on implementing national pharmacare, to make prescription drugs more affordable and accessible to more Canadians. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today visited Halifax, Nova Scotia to highlight the Government of Canada's plan to move forward with important measures that will lay the foundation for national pharmacare. Through Budget 2019, the government announced its intention to move forward, in partnership with provinces, territories, and other partners and stakeholders, on three foundational elements of national pharmacare:

Create a Canadian Drug Agency, which would assess the effectiveness of new prescription drugs and negotiate drug prices on behalf of Canada's drug plans to help lower drug costs for Canadians by up to $3 billion per year in the long term. Develop a national formulary – a comprehensive, evidence-based list of prescription drugs – which would help promote coverage that is more consistent across the country. Establish a national strategy for high-cost drugs for rare diseases to help Canadians – many of whom are children – get better and more consistent access to the muchneeded treatments that they need. From young children who need lifesaving drugs to seniors who need affordable medication, the Government of Canada is working with its part-

ners to provide all Canadians with a better quality of life. "No Canadian should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying for the prescription drugs they or their family need. Through Budget 2019, we are taking action to make medication more accessible and to lower the cost of prescription drugs for Canadians of all ages. These are important steps toward building a system that helps all Canadians get the medicine they need when they need it." —The Rt. Opposition Party-Sandwich Scandal

nvitations went out for the 'Party of the Year', an unexpected surprise in the middle of the fiscal year. The ruling Liberal Deficit party wanted to celebrate their new tax-free catering deal and not only were members of the official Overreactive-Opposition Conservative (OOC) party invited, but also the Gleeful NDP and the Green-Viro, Marijuana Munchy and Extinct Rhinoceros parties. The dress code was semi-formal, but clean underwear was required. The guests arrived in fashionable time for the much anticipated event. They were led into a hall just off the House of Uncommons chamber and greeted with cocktails and strolling pied pipers. Once everyone settled in, Prime Minister Trusmiley-dough entered the chambers wearing a Coat of Many Colours, made especially for the event by Jacob the tailor, while a band played the theme from Rocky. Soon after, tables filled with trays of hors d'oeuvres and all types of delectable goodies were rolled out. Members of the Marijuana Munchy party were first in line, gobbling down minieggrolls and fudge brownies, using both hands and even their feet at times. "Man, this is good stuff," leader Blaring T. Stoney was overheard saying. The Extinct Rhinoceros party was far more behaved, using napkins and plates to pile on the goodies and also filling up plastic takeout bags with nary a care but that's when Lizzie May, leader of the Green Viro party stepped in. "Plastic bags? Plastic?!" she cried out, tackling their leader by the horn, almost decomposing but quickly recycled herself and began scolding him with such ramming

Wait times for joint replacements and cataract surgery growing

A

pproximately 30% of patients who required a hip or knee replacement or cataract surgery did not have their procedure done within the recommended wait times in 2018, according to new data released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Meanwhile, most Canadians continued to receive timely access to more urgent procedures, with 88% of Canadians receiving a hip fracture repair and 97% of Canadians receiving radiation therapy within the recommended wait times. "Differences in wait times across the country are a reflection of multiple factors, including how care delivery is structured, how a patient's wait time is measured and —

most importantly, in hip and knee replacements — whether provinces are able to provide adequate resources to meet the demand for these types of surgeries." — Dr. Eric Bohm, Orthopedic Surgeon and Canadian Joint Replacement Registry Advisory Committee Chair Wait times for hip replacement, knee replacement and cataract surgeries continue to vary depending on where patients live. In most provinces, they are not improving. For example, the percentage of people receiving knee replacement surgery within the recommended wait time of 6 months improved by at least 5% since 2016 in only 3 provinces (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and British Columbia) while the percentage in Canada's remaining provinces either

decreased or remained stable. "Reducing wait times is a complex challenge and we see from the data that increasing the number of surgeries performed won't necessarily mean patients will experience shorter wait times. For example, Canada's growing and aging population, as well as increases in conditions such as osteoarthritis and obesity, have contributed to a growing demand for these joint replacement procedures." — Kathleen Morris, Vice President, Research and Analysis, CIHI Data on trends from 2014 to 2018 is available in CIHI's online Wait Times tool, organized by province and procedure. Wait time data from 2008 onward is also available for download.

Born A Crime by Trevor Noah (Anchor Canada, $22)

E

Trevor Noah being interviewed on the red carpet at Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal

ver since the days of the court jester, the comedian has been regarded not only for their ability to make people laugh, but through their comedy can become a valued social critic, giving a unique, informed take on society and vital social issues of the day. South African comedian Trevor Noah utilizes this role of the comedian-associal-critic quite extensively, first as the host of Comedy Central’s popular mock newscast “The Daily Show”, and as a touring stand up comic (he will be returning to Just For Laughs this summer, with a solo show at the Bell Centre on July 26). Thanks to Noah’s standup comedy, we get a look at how he grew up in South Africa during the waning days of the government’s oppressive apartheid policies and that historic moment when Nelson Mandela was released from a 27-year prison sentence and ushered in democracy when he was elected its president during the 1990s. But Noah was born to a white Swiss father and a black South African mother, which was a direct contravention of the country’s Immorality Act

18

of 1927, which made it illegal for Europeans and natives to have “illicit carnal intercourse” with each other and can lead to imprisonment for up to five years. This racial mixture had Noah fall through the cracks of the South African government’s rather bizarre racial classification (where Chinese

citizens were classified as “coloured” and Japanese citizens were classified as “white”). Basically, he couldn’t be classified neither as “black”, “white” or “coloured”; in his pointof-view, Noah was, according to the above-mentioned law, “born a crime”. And that’s the phrase he used for the title of his million-copy best selling memoir, which has re-

cently been released in paperback, and is about to become a major motion picture that will star Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. Born A Crime is not the typical kind of memoir that comedians have been churning out for over the past 25 years, which are mainly a collection of humourous autobiographical stories that are strung together with samples of their stand-up comedy material. Noah offers a sobering, gritty, realistic look at what it was like to grow up in the volatile world that is South Africa, when it went from one turbulent period in its history to another. We find out how he grew up as the child of a single mother, whose strong ties to religion and unique approaches to discipline and child rearing created a string bond between mother and child. We also find out how life was like growing up in the grinding poverty of the townships of Johannesburg (especially the powder keg that was Soweto, which was the site of violent riots in 1976), in which his detailed accounts can equal or surpass that of some of the best TV or newspaper for-

eign correspondents. On the other hand, we also get a first-hand account of Trevor Noah the survivor, and how he made being an unclassifiable citizen gave him the ability to learn and master many of the languages and dialects that are spoken in South Africa, which made it easier for him to interact with many of the country’s ethnic groups (and sometimes evade some of its strict criminal laws); also we get to know how he survived an abusive stepfather who somehow managed to always evade arrest and imprisonment for domestic violence because of the pro male bias of the South African police (especially after he nearly fatally shot Noah’s mother in the head). As well, Noah treats his readers to a number of stories that give a somewhat light hearted look to growing up under the harsh, racially charged at-

Born A Crime is probably one of the best memoirs to be written by a comedian since Lenny Bruce’s How To Talk Dirty and Influence People and Steve Martin’s Born Standing Up. Although Noah’s comic voice is quite evident in the narrative, he doesn’t chiefly rely on it. Instead, we get a quasijournalistic portrait of life under an oppressive, racially tense society in a turbulently changing South Africa, and gives his global audience a much more clearer understanding of how apartheid tore apart this troubled country from someone who was thrust in the middle of all of that turmoil and survived it all with a great deal of humour, resourcefulness and a strong will to continue.

WOMAN AT WAR: The improbable eco-terrorist girl from Ukraine has just been approved, and she should make the trip there to meet the girl and bring her to Iceland. Things will get complicated, and she must seek some help from her sister, whose interests are more ethereal: yoga and meditation, and the unique occa-

sion to travel to India to be instructed by a famous guru. The director manages to keep us interested not only in the fate of the unlikely eco-terrorist but also for some the ingenious resources he uses to take us through the story, namely the presence of a

band and a trio of Ukrainian folk singers as a kind of ‘live' musical accompaniment, but not visible to the actors, instead of the off-camera soundtrack. "Woman at War" a pleasant story of an ordinary woman who decides to do something about climate change, and the re-

sponse she receives from other people, highly praised at Cannes and other festivals, is especially recommended to those concerned about environmental issues but also, to anyone who appreciate the fighting side of human spirit. Running time: 101 min.

For those who perhaps do not qualify to obtain a mortgage loan under the new mortgage rules introduced by the federal government at the beginning of 2018, this will not be of much help! Although the incentives are outlined by the Government, many details have yet to be provided, and may only be finalized in the Fall of 2019, after the provincial elections. With the tightening of the mortgage rules in 2018, the Montreal real estate market has experienced a sharp decline in inventory of homes for
