Montreal artist, Peter W. Hart in action
The PETERwHART Gallery offers free book with interactive tour!
Montreal artist, Peter W. Hart, announces the launch of his free and interactive tours of his eponymously named gallery located in Old Montreal to the public. This innovative and personalized virtual tour allows for not only a one on one experience but also an incredible and safe activity of both education and entertainment during these difficult times. The PETERwHART Gallery has been a cornerstone in the heart of the Old Montreal community for many years. “With the limitations on travel due to the pandemic, we kept hearing from people who were disappointed that they couldn’t visit our gallery”, says Francine Bellomo, Director of the gallery. “After a while we thought, ‘if people can’t visit the gallery, we’ll just bring the gallery to them’”. The tours are live, completely interactive, and will be hosted by one of the gallery’s knowledgeable associates using the preferred virtual method each visitor • November 21, 2020
prefers… i.e. Zoom, Facetime, Messenger etc. The goal is to bring the beauty and charm of the PETERwHART Gallery to visitors at a time and place that is convenient for them. Peter W. Hart is a self-taught artist who fell in love with painting at the “ripe old age” of 39 while flipping through a book that included a reproduction of Degas’ “Dancers”. The painting awakened a surprise response that led to a sudden and intense passion for art - especially the works of the Impressionists. “The play of light, as well as the use and juxtaposition of colors of the impressionist artists fascinated me”, says Hart. “I could not get enough of them and began traveling the world to study the originals. I was an intern studying with the greatest masters of all time and collecting inspiration from every painting I saw.” To help kick off the virtual tours, The PETERwHART Gallery is giving away “Transwww.mtltimes.ca
posing Joy” to the first 100 virtual tours. This is Hart’s latest book, a 200-page, oversized chronicle of his latest paintings in big, beautiful pages filled with bold strokes and even bolder colors. Both abstract and nature scenes are represented using almost every color imaginable that seem to leap off the pages. “The book is our way of giving back to the public that has been so kind and gracious to our gallery over the years”, says Bellomo. “The pandemic has been tough on all of us. It is our hope that by showcasing the beauty of Peter’s paintings it will help put a smile on someone’s face and make our days a little more cheerful.” For more information on The PETERwHART Gallery and to book a virtual interactive tour simply send an email request to contact@PETERwHART.com https://www.peterwhart.com/index.php 3

First West Island homeless shelter opening in December AJOI (Action Jeunesse de l'Ouest-de-l'île) has been working tirelessly for many years to help young adults ages 18 to 35 in need of assistance in the West Island area - and they have been unwavering in their goal to open a homeless shelter. Although many issues still need to be addressed involving the plight of those who are homeless their mission to open a shelter is finally coming to fruition. This December, the West Island’s first-ever homeless shelter is scheduled to open for the winter. It may come as a surprise to some people, that even though the West Island is considered to have advantageous living conditions, the area hides a reality where an estimated 18% of young people up to 34 years old are living in areas of social and material deprivation - according to Tania Charron (Executive Director of AJOI) when I spoke with her in early 2019. They live in the shadows of our society and are often unseen. "People have suggested these young adults should simply be taken to shelters in downtown Montreal, but the growing number of young people from the West Island don't want to be taken there," Tania had explained. "They are afraid and do not want to be uprooted from the area they have always lived in and known and so refuse to go.They end up sleeping in cars or couch surfing at the homes of friends until exhausting all of their options and then • November 21, 2020

fonds and Lachine areas. Outreach workers will be at the shelters - offering hot coffee, food, drinks, use of a shower, a place to rest and support. A shuttle service will also be available. The shelter will be able to accommodate between 10 to 15 people at night - operating seven days a week from 11:00pm to 7:00am and open until March 31st 2021. waiting and hoping an outreach worker manages to find them a temporary room for the night. Many of these young adults want a better life for themselves, they don't want to be living on the streets or sleeping in conditions that put them further at risk… how can they go to school or hold down a job when they do not know where they are going to sleep and if they are going to eat?" That statement is still relative today - and with the ongoing pandemic, the challenges are now even greater. To run the shelter for the winter, the City of Montreal and the CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal has granted $200,000 to AJOI. Although the exact location has yet to be determined, they are looking at potential sites in the Pierrewww.mtltimes.ca

Will Rapid Covid-19 testing at airports change your approach to travel? Airlines across the country have been particularly hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many struggling to survive - including at Trudeau National Aeroport. However, a new rapid test may prove to be a solution towards saving the airline industry. Air Canada was one of the first in the industry in responding to the situation, by requiring travelers to wear face coverings and the first airline in the Americas to take customers' temperatures prior to boarding. In May, it introduced a comprehensive program, Air Canada CleanCare+, to apply industry-leading biosafety measures at each stage of the journey. Provinces across Canada now have a total of 3.8 million Covid-19 rapid tests and each government is deciding how and where they will use them. The airline industry is one area of concern and Air Canada had already announced in News Release on October 1st that were they were 'finalizing an initial order from Abbott for 25,000 rapid test kits for voluntary employee testing now that it has been approved for use in Canada'.Air Canada's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jim Chung had said, 'Understanding
By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca that we will need to live alongside this virus for the short- to mediumterm, we have been pursuing relationships and a layered approach as a way to keep our employees and our customers safe. We believe testing will be key to protecting employees and customers until such time as a COVID-19 vaccine is available. Rapid testing is also a means to enable governments to relax current blanket travel restrictions and quarantines in a measured way while still safeguarding the health and safety of the public." The rapid testing system could prove to be an alternative to the 14www.mtltimes.ca
day quarantine system. Called ID NOW, the testing kit can provide results in 13 minutes with tests that are able to not only detect the active virus, but also detect antibodies in people who were previously infected - according to Abbott. According to McMaster Health Labs (MHL) who performed 13,000 tests on volunteers since September 3rd, more than 99% tested negative for COVID-19. Of the less than 1% who tested positive, more than 80% were detected in the first test with the others found in the seven-day test. However, reliability of the tests are still being questioned by health officials on whether they can fully trust the results or not - and that rapid tests might not be as reliable as the lab tests. The Medical Officer of Health in Ottawa, Dr. Vera Etches said the 'city's testing team is looking at some pilot projects to use rapid tests, such as at a long-term care home with a suspected outbreak' but that 'there are still concerns rapid tests might not be as reliable as the lab tests'. At this stage, it might be enough for some people to feel safer traveling - and for others, perhaps not. November 21, 2020 •

I AM GRETA The unexpected activist
It is certainly uncommon to see a teenage girl becoming a media phenomenon of global dimensions and interacting with world leaders and being received by international organizations. Greta Thunberg achieved all that in just a couple of years. "I Am Greta" a documentary directed by Nathan Grossman and made in 2020, captures her extraordinary trajectory. From the time she started her quixotic "school strike for climate" in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018, when she was just 15year-old, until the following year when she addressed the UN Conference on Climate Change in Poland and then the UN Climate Action Summit in New York. Who is this young girl, now 17-year-old, who visited Montreal last year (that trip is not covered in the film) and who has been diagnosed with Asperger? Is it just a media phenomenon or a powerful symbol for the fight against climate change? Or, perhaps, a little bit of both. As a darling of the media, depicted as the "girl with the right answers" is at times somehow irritating. It reminds us of the "teacher's favourite," seating in the front row who—when the occasion allowed it— we would give her a smack on her head when passing by. Her admonishing speech to international leaders begun with that famous "How dare you…!" is now a potent symbol of youth anger in the face of global inaction regarding climate change. The movie captures that moment very well, which eventually cata10

pulted Greta as a courageous young leader. However, Greta's personality is far from the image of an outspoken rebel. Soon after the scenes depicting her initial protest in front of the Swedish parliament, she declares, "I don't like to do small talk with people, or socialize" she adds: "Sometimes I may be quiet for hours." She also admits to having felt "depressed." Her own insecurities are made clear when at one point, she suggests—about the people in general—"They are tired of me now." Indeed, the most candid expressions of her doubts come when she takes that demanding journey on a sailboat to cross the Atlantic to attend the UN Climate Action Summit in New York. The crossing, which she made accompanied by her father and the ship captain, would have been a challenge to anyone, let alone a physically-small www.mtltimes.ca
girl like Greta. (Although sixteen at the time, she really looks more like a 12-yearold.) During the trip, she admits it was too much for her, but she also indicates that the cause for which she is campaigning is worth the sacrifice. (Greta refused to fly due to the high impact of commercial aviation over the atmosphere.) The director and producers of this film should be praised for the sincere portrayal of a special young girl. Certainly not the average teenager from any well-to-do family living in a developed society. For some, an unexpected heroine of our time, for others a media creation. Respected by most political leaders despite them being her target for their insufficient action to counter climate change. Although with some exceptions: Vladimir Putin was not particularly impressed by her; while both, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro were openly dismissive of her. The film also mentions other unsavoury occurrences around the young activist: from innuendos of her being exploited by her family to death threats she has received. In any case, this documentary may interest especially people who are involved in the fight against climate change. However, I would also recommend it to anyone interested in current world events. "I Am Greta" is in Swedish with English subtitles and is available on Video on Demand on Apple TV+ and local cable operators. Running Time: 97 min. November 21, 2020 •
What’s going on Montreal To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the visit to Montreal by the late African National Congress (ANC) leader and President of South Africa Nelson Mandela (which happened in the same year he was released from a South African prison after 27 years of incarceration), a special mural was unveiled during a ceremony at the Union United Church on November 16. Entitled “Long Walk to Freedom” (which shares the title of Mandela’s best selling memoir), the mural was a joint project of the church (where the mural was painted on one of its exterior walls, located on Atwater at the corner of Delisle Street), the Round Table on Black History Month and MU, a charitable organization with a mission to transform Montreal’s public spaces through the creation of original murals throughout its many communities. Based on these responses, Chef’s Pencil managed to compile a final list of those who ranked as these unsung heroes of gastronomic delights. And Montreal made that list; in fact, it landed in the #9 position. In the report, Montreal was cited for their “eat-less-feel-moresatisfied” approach to many restaurant menus, and highlighted such new restaurants as Tiers Pasage, Marcus and Bar George for their contributions to Montreal’s renewal as a high-dining destination. By the way, the other destinations that made it to this list (in order of appearance) are: 1) Cape Town, 2) Budapest, 3) Chicago, 4) Melbourne, 5) Mexico City, 6) San Sebastien, Spain, 7) Bergen, Norway, 8) Hong Kong, and 10) Napoli, Italy. Called “Malunderstood”, he dealt with his rural upbringing in Ontario as a member of a family whose roots go back to Switzerland. It was an enjoyable show that gave audiences a new perspective to Streule, who always presented himself in a likeable, offbeat manner (especially if you saw him as the narrator every year at the MainLine’s annual run of “The Rocky Horror Show”). And now, for those who need their theatre fix (virtually, that is), Kenny is presenting “Malunderstood: A Virtual Performance Experience” until Nov. 22, so you can enjoy the show once again in the comfort of your own home, and share it with your friends to tell them what was playing to sold out crowds at the MainLine during those cold pre-pandemic months of early 2020. "Many Canadians love to visit Hawaii during the winter months to escape the cold weather, so the timing for this works well. Hawaii has the most rigorous pre-travel testing program in the United States, and we're grateful to WestJet for making it available to their passengers," said Hawaii's Governor David Ige. The airline will begin the testing program in partnership with DynaLIFE in Alberta for guests holding a WestJet-ticketed itinerary to Hawaii within 72-hours. Colours you might die for The two young men closed their menus having settled on their breakfast options. By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca
“What can I get for you this morning?” the waitress asked, pen poised. Felix looked up and grinned. “Well, I’m going to have the 3-egg option, sunny, brown toast and jam, orange juice and coffee, please. Oscar shrugged and said, “Um, I ate already so I’ll just have the Kellogg’s corn flakes, but with the strawberry flavoured milk. And throw in the Yoplait yogurt on the side, please. The waitress gathered the menus and promised to be back soon. ‘What was that all about, dude. Red Dye #40?” Oscar asked “You know my little brother is a terror, right? Like Red Dye #40. I’ve been looking at the affected food items and corn flakes is right up there, bud. Loaded. “Red Dye? Corn flakes aren’t red?” said Oscar “Doesn’t matter. The dye makes them look golden delicious. Take chocolate pudding? If there was no red dye in it, it would be green, not brown. And there is red dye #40 in your soon to arrive strawberry flavoured milk, and in the yogurt on the side. That’s why I said you might have just as well ordered Red Dye #40. Oh, and dyes are in cosmetics too. My mom changed her red lipstick brand. She’s become the Dye Spy. There are lots of artificial dyes but Red 40 is the worst. Looks like you could be the next candidate for ADHD, bud.” “Maybe I should just stick to Gatorade?” sighed Oscar, but seeing the quizzical expression on Felix’s face, said, “O sht, that too?” Red Dye no. 40 a.k.a. Al-
lura red, Red 40 Lake, FD &C Red No. 40,Aluminum Lake, CI Food Red 17, INS 129, E129 and more. It is the most common dye in foods. And the Red 40 is the really bad one. But the reds are not alone. There are varieties of blues, greens, yellows too. These synthetic dyes are made from coal tars or petroleum that can contain toxic heavy metals. Found in pharmaceuticals, food (candies, packaged foods, dairy products, cereals, popsicles, baked goods, sports
drinks) and cosmetics. When a product is enhanced in looks, the consumer is more likely to buy. Colour additives are regulated but in many cases the restrictions may not be nearly enough. People are often more aware of the dangers in foods, but tend to be less cautious with cosmetics. Make sure you read all your food, medication and cosmetic labels carefully for colour additives. with our body care products. cream, lotions, make ups. Dermatitis maybe, but over time the toxins can build up and result in reproductive and developmental disorders, mood swings, muscle disorders, lung damage, cancer, allergies, memory problems, neurological, kidney, renal problems, hair loss, nausea, headaches. When was the last time you heard someone say, “Oh, they traced her illness to her body lotion.“ Earth to Body uses no
colour or other synthetic additive. Any colour in an Earth to Body product comes from the natural colour of the ingredient. Like the earth tone beauty in shea, charcoal, clay, moringa, amla.
