Lighting the Jacques Cartier Bridge is designed to celebrate Montreal's 375th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. ederal plans are continuing to light up Montreal's JacquesCartier Bridge structure for an estimated $39.5 million. This is despite a change of government late last year; it was the Harper Conservatives who approved the bridge lighting plan, together with Montreal mayor Denis Coderre. Lighting the Jacques Cartier Bridge is designed to celebrate Montreal's 375th anniversary and the

150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. Proponents talk about creating a visual icon that Montrealers can be proud of while detractors wonder what value there is in “the world's costliest bridge lighting project.” For clarity, we wrote Julie Paquet, Director of Communications for the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Corporation, a federal agency: “The illumination project is well underway, studies and design have been ongoing since fall 2015, and light installation will start shortly. The project is expected to be complete in

time for Montreal’s anniversary, May 17, 2017 and be operational for at least 10 years.” “The $39.5 million budget includes all costs for the concept, design, system purchases, execution, operations and maintenance for 10 years. It is still too early to calculate precisely the cost of electricity.” Dorval resident Murray Levine is among those trying to stop what he sees as a huge waste of taxpayers' money. “The system is a friggen joke,” Levine says. “The media is no better as they bitch about it but don't ask

questions. I know who authorized it as (former Minister of Infrastructure, Denis Lebel) told me that he did...” Montreal is paying top dollar for the Jacques Cartier Bridge according to a list of 12 similar lighting projects around the world in The Montreal Gazette. While the average cost is 10 times less than the Jacques Cartier Bridge, that list also includes Toronto's CN Tower and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The 2,431 metres John Blatnik Bridge in Duluth, MN seems the most similar to the 2,687m Jacques

Cartier Bridge. The Blatnik Bridge had lighting installed in 2014 at a cost of $750,000 USD ($985,000 CDN). We asked Paquet why costs are about 40 times higher to light up a bridge in Montreal versus Duluth. Her response, in part reads: “The project will cover the entire steel superstructure and the piers of the bridge. The illuminated area is considerably higher than other similar projects. Canada's northern climate puts a strain on infrastructures: temperatures that can drop to -45 Celsius, strong winds above the

river, snow and ice that add weight to the structure, road salt that may damage the equipment, etc. All of these are considered in the design, choice of lighting equipment and systems installation.” The Blatnik Bridge crosses part of Lake Superior; like the Jacques Cartier Bridge, it is built high enough to accommodate ocean-going ships passing underneath. Duluth, at 46.8 N, is farther north than Montreal and endures long, cold, snowy winters according to Wikipedia.

difficulties, this year's festival has so far a great selection. "The Habit of Beauty" by Mirko Pincelli is an Italy-UK co-production in which a tragic accident that killed his 12-year-old son changed the life of successful photographer Carlo, now living in London. He is now separated from his wife who is also residing in the British capital, but she is now with another man. Carlo—who was working giving some photo lessons at local jail— would find some unlikely company and friendship in a young former convict, himself with a heavy set of problems, but who may help him to find a new look right at the time when Carlo's life is experiencing a crucial moment. Another remarkable first work is "As Far as the Eyes Can See" by David Frankin, featuring

Quebec actress Juliette Gosselin performed at the opening film

Jason London as Jack Ridge, a prodigious piano player in a small town in Texas who is now retired from her career and facing a dark period in his life. He has been invited to perform at the local piano competition, an event that first consecrated him but which now he sees as a distant past which doesn't seem to interest him. The appearance of young teenager Alyssa (Jasmine Skloss-Harrison) would make things change for James, and instead of being anchored in the past would make look at the future, with different eyes. Regarding the official competition "La pelle dell'orso" ("The Bear's Skin") directed by Marco Segato is in my view one of the

www.mtltimes.ca

most serious candidates to win the Gran Prix des Ameriques, the first prize in this category. Pietro and his son Domenico live alone in a small town in the Dolomite region. A bear has been causing havoc among the peasants and in an unexpected move, Pietro—who is not much liked in the place— decides to challenge the unscrupulous boss of the local company by saying that he would kill the bear, in exchange for a large sum of money. The manager accepts, but if Pietro fails, he would have to work for him for free for a year. Domenico accompanies his father on the risky journey, and that would also be a moment of revelation for them.

Belgian director Nic Balthazar won the first prize at the Montreal Fest in 2007 with his movie "Ben X". Now he has a new one in competition, "Everybody Happy" focused on the demanding life of a stand-up comic, Ralph Hartman (Peter Van den Begin) who is now overcome by a profound sense of pessimism. Problems in his relations with his son and former lover make things even more complicated, on top of that, his producer keeps asking for him to perform the same safer, old routines which he has actually come to detest. The Montreal World Film Festival continues until Labour Day at the Imperial Theatre, 1432 Bleury St., metro Place des Arts. For complete schedule go to: www.ffm-montreal.org

he statistics are hard to believe. In Canada, someone is diagnosed with lymphoma every 45 minutes. This form of cancer that attacks the lymphocytes, a main part of our body’s immune system, is the 5th most common form of cancer in Canada; as well, it the leading form of cancer amongst teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 and 29, and the third most common form of cancer in children. On October 23, Lymphoma Canada will be holding a major fundraiser that will not only help raise needed funds in the battle against lymphoma, but also teach you how to live your life with ease and humour and enhance your well-being through yoga or meditation. Called “Take it to the Mat”, it will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Shatner Building of McGill University, and will be emceed by

Making Waves by Shirley Babashoff with Chris Epting By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

(Santa Monica Press, $32.50)

B

ack in the summer of 1976, I was caught up in the flurry of excitement that was the Summer Olympics that year, especially since it was taking place in my hometown of Montreal. I was fortunate enough to catch the opening ceremonies live at the Olympic Stadium, and was quite impressed to see all that pageantry right in front of me. As well, I watched a great deal of the coverage of the games on both CBC and ABC. And throughout those 16 days of glory, three names were always mentioned who constantly dominated the spotlight at the 76 Olympics: Nadia Comaneci, Bruce Jenner and Shirley Babashoff. The first two are well known for obvious reasons (Nadia scored the very first “10” during the gymnastics competition and Jenner won the decathlon). As for Babashoff, she was the champion freestyle swimmer and world record holder who won three medals at the

1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, and was touted to win a slew of individual gold medals in the pool four years later in Montreal (she even appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 1976 Olympic Preview issue). However, something happened during those individual swimming competitions at the Olympic Pool in Montreal. It was in the form of the women’s Olympic swimming team from East Germany. They somehow appeared to be more stronger and muscular in appearance than any of their other female swimming counterparts. And they virtually tore up the pool with every race they competed in, practically winning the lion’s share of the gold medals. They proved to be no match for Babashoff, who ended up winning four individual silver medals, and scored a personal victory when as a member of the U.S. women’s relay team, they beat the East Germans and won the gold medal in the 4X100 relay. Although her medal haul in Montreal was quite impressive by any standards, something about the way the East German women swimmers appeared and their somewhat superhuman performance in the pool seemed to bother Babashoff a great deal. She was suspicious that these swimmers were winning their gold medals not through the merit of years and hours of hard work and practice like she did, but through constant

doping using illegal performance enhancement drugs (which she learned about from a 1973 article by French journalist JeanPierre Lacour in Swimming World magazine, which stated that East German athletes were part of a state run program since the 1960s, and were given a “vaccine” to combat fatigue). When Babashoff decided to go to the media and voice her opinion about why the East Germans really won so many swimming gold medals, she was accused of poor sportsmanship for picking on the poor, defenceless East Germans. And instead of being regarded as game changer who first shed light on the worldwide illegal doping of athletes, both amateur and professional, she was viewed as a bitter individual, and was given the nickname “Surly Shirley” by a rather unforgiving sports press corps. And now more than 40 years later, Shirley Babashoff tells her story as a revered champion swimmer and a pioneering whistle blower when it comes to sports doping in her engaging memoir Making Waves. Babashoff, who was born and raised in the L.A. suburb of Norwalk, began swimming competitively when she was eight years old. The impression you get is that she built her swimming career as a means of escaping a rather dysfunctional family upbringing with a constantly disapproving mother and a father who later was convicted of being a child molester. Through her swimming, Babashoff managed to give herself not only a sense of purpose and accomplishment, but also gave her a means to explore the country and the world through the multitude of swim meets she competed in. And she got

Rioja behind the Tempranillo grape red fruits found in Imperial; with a bit of age both offer notes of coffee, cigar smoke, leather and earth. In blind tastings it's quite possible to mistake them for well aged Bordeaux, although the brighter acidity and different oak treatment—classic Rioja was aged in large old American oak casks, giving more herbal character and less vanilla than French wood—makes Rioja different. On September 11th, a crianza from CVNE will

be released at the SAQ. If there is a lot of demand and attention for 6 months it will be listed as a regular product in the SAQ catalog. It will be available at 40 SAQ outlets. This crianza is made in the Rioja Alta and it is a predominant blend of tempranillo ( 80%) with Mazuelo (10%) and Garnacha Tinta ( 10%). It is aged in american oak. It is an amazing value for the price it commands and can be kept for a few years in the cellar.

ay “Rioja” and wine lovers think about the Tempranillo grape, and for good reason: it makes the majority of the blend for most Rioja wines (and many times 100% of the wine). It also gives Rioja

quality, but permitted the idea of exportation to become a major element in Rioja (eventually creating markets as far away as Cuba, since the wines of Rioja stayed in prime condition during travel as the best wines of France). In another example of Bordeaux helping Rioja become what it is today, during the late 19th cen-

power. Because most producers do not own land in multiple sub-regions, the wines of a particular producer will most of the times show the qualities of their sub-region. Add that with the fact you can employ any of the four main grapes in any percentage, and you end up with the reality that there is a huge variation in styles and possibilities with Rioja. From light bodied, delicate, nearly Pinot Noir like queens, to full body, decadent hedonistic fruit bombs, and everything in the middle(even on the same

point and offer the opportunity to enjoy mature wines at what are, considering their age and reputation, extremely reasonable prices. The two famous CVNE wines are Imperial and Viña Real, which are made to contrast the differences in Rioja terroirs. Imperial is produced from vineyards in Rioja Alta, which has a higher elevation and thus cooler weather than the vineyards in Rioja Alavesa which are the source of Viña Real. The different conditions translate that Viña Real has darker fruit tones compared with the

its particular aromas of dried red fruits and soft spice that so many people cherish and appreciate. Tempranillo has been associated with the region since the mid-15th century and is by far the majority grape planted. As a result, it’s normal to simply think about just Tempranillo when thinking about Rioja However, three other red grapes are prominent in Rioja: Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and Mazuelo (otherwise known as Carignan). Rioja owes to Bordeaux a lot. The connection between Rioja and this famous wine regions goes back to 1780, when Don Manuel Quintano went to Bordeaux to acquire the skills to make fine wine. He came back to Spain with a kind of silver bullet:a new techie tool in Bordeaux, the oak barrel. Not only did this improve • September 3, 2016

tury as vineyards across France (including Bordeaux) were slowly dying from the Phylloxera invasion, the Bordelaise never ceased drinking or shipping wine. To satisfy their thirst (and the demands of their customers in the capitals of Europe) they looked to the south, Rioja, as a result promoting the wines of Rioja onto the world stage in Paris, London, and beyond. Rioja is labelled into individual regions There are three sub-regions in Rioja: Rioja Alta (western part, higher altitudes, often seen as the best quality area with great verve and balance), Rioja Alavesa (northern part, poor soils with low yields, high altitude that translate to full bodied and high acid wines), and Rioja Baja (southeast, much drier and warmer and more Mediterranean, making wines of ripeness and

vintage). At the heart of Rioja, we can find one of the greatest producers of the region and Spain, CVNE. This acronym stands for the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España. It has been known since its origins as one of the best producers of traditional Rioja. In a wine industry dominated by over extracted and overrated luxury Spanish cuvèes built to achieve high scores with expensive prices, the winery has kept the traditional Rioja style of wines built to age for decades. The best vintages of the 1960s and 1970s are just now at their optimal drinking

Chef Peter Webster - Bouquet Garni

Zucchuni Parmesan with Roasted tomato sauce

W

ith so many tomatoes around, I was looking to find a use for them. My garden is loaded with tomatoes and there are only so many one can use in a salad. I decided I would try a quick tomato sauce by roasting the tomatoes instead of boiling the skins to remove them. Roasting the tomatoes and onions and herbs brings out the natural sugars for a beautiful sauce. Marva, my sous-chef gave me a huge yellow zucchini from her garden. It was then I decided to try a zucchini parmesan. You need three pans to prepare the zucchini. One is for flour to dust the zucchini slices. The second is for the egg mixture and the third is for the bread crumbs. It is a little bit of work to prepare this dish but if you start with the tomato sauce, by the time the zucchini is prepared, the tomato sauce will be finished and you are ready for the oven. Roasted Tomato Sauce • 3 to 4 lbs tomatoes, halved • 1 sweet onion. Chopped • 8 cloves of garlic, peeled and halved • 1/2 to 3/4 cup basil • 2 branches of fresh thyme • 1/4 cup olive oil • Salt and freshly ground pepper Toss all the ingredients in a baking pan. Bake in a hot oven, 400º, for about one hour until the tomato skins turn a bronze colour and are softened. Using a blender, roughly puree the tomato sauce. Zucchini Parmesan As mentioned, I was given a huge zucchini and I cut it into 1/4 inch slices. Use enough of your own zucchini as you will need for the number of guests. You may decide to peel the zucchini or not.

• Sliced zucchini, about 1/4 inch thickness • 1/2 cup flour in a flat pan • 4-6 eggs slightly beaten with salt and pepper • 2-3 cups of bread crumbs mixed with 1 cup parmesan cheese, a pinch of fine herbs and salt and pepper • Oil for frying • Sliced mozzarella or Jack cheese Dip the zucchini slices in the flour and shake of excess. Dip the slices into the egg mixture and then into the bread crumbs, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the slice. Place slices onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat until all slices are prepared. In a frying pan, heat a little oil until hot. Fry the zucchini slices, a few at a time, until golden brown on each side. I used a paper towel after each batch, wiping out the frying pan so the bits of leftover bread and cheese would not burn and give a bad taste to the next batch of zucchini slices. Assembling: In a baking dish, coat the bottom with some tomato sauce. Place the cooked zucchini on top. Add a slice of cheese and top with tomato sauce. Finish with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. You can also double the layers of zucchini, sauce and cheese. Bake in the oven, 350º, for about 30 to 40 minutes until the sauce is bubbly.

ime and time again, I hear ‘success’ testimonials from my customers. This next story is particularly genuine. Once again, ‘One of a Kind Christmas Show’. Toronto. My favorite show of the year. Non-stop! A young man walks in, a good looking guy, but seeming quite distraught. He selects one of the literature explanations we offer. I walk over to say hi. With no dilly-dallying, he asks, “Can you help me?” He holds up his palms. His hands are covered in warts. Not just one or two, I’m saying 30 at least. I gasp, “My goodness! You poor thing.” He sighs, “I’m an artist. I can’t work. I can’t paint. I can’t hold my brush. The Pain. I can’t function. It’s gross. People think I’m disgusting. I’m desperate and nobody can help me. I’ve tried everything for 2 years with no results.” I smile encouragingly, “Well, I can try.We do sell good skin care. I make no claims for warts, but sometimes a healthy product can perform miracles. Come.” He looks at me in dis-

belief, as I lead him over to our Neem salve. I explain neem to him, where it’s from, how it can work. Testimonials show nothing works on warts like neem. I share my own experience. “I used it years ago on a cluster of warts on my foot. They never came back. The neem apparently pulls the roots right out. Do your own research on neem and you will see what people say.” He buys a container. I advise patience and to be consistent. I wish him success, hope that his life will change and he will be able to go back to his painter’s oasis and not have to be so ashamed anymore. He departs, eager to get started. The next year came, same show. In walks this nice looking guy. He is over by the Neem products holding two of them. I ask “Are you familiar with neem?” He beams, “If it wasn’t for this product, I wouldn’t be able to work.” He holds up his hands and a memory triggers. “Oh my, I remember now. Both hands. Covered in warts.” He smiles, displaying hands, beautiful, clean and clear. “Remember, I could not make a living as an

artist. Nor could I be in a relationship. The neem took a few weeks. The warts all disappeared and never returned. I would never have been the same if I hadn’t met you and tried this product. I’m an Earth To Body customer for life. Thank you for changing my life entirely. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. The new 3 P’s of Selling your Property

S

By Eleni Akrivos mtltimes.ca

urprisingly, the old way of selling a property was to “Put up the Sign, Place the listing on Mls, and Pray”. Homes used to sell using this method for many years, but the market has changed drastically. Being in a buyers’ market for some time now, means that if you are a seller, you need to have a good strategy to not only sell, but get the best possible outcome. Our job as realtors is to get the most people in the door, since real estate is a numbers game. We need to market the property, and find the right buyer for the property, who is qualified financially and willing to pay market value. In order for the marketing plan to work effectively these 3 things are a must! 1Pricing If your asking price is too high it drives people away and by the way if your property is NOT selling, this is the #1 reason. Most sellers on the market today, are used to the overinflated prices of the past, so the tendency I see is that sellers often

OVERPRICE. If you price the same as the neighbors, this is not the best strategy. Your professional realtor will research the SOLD properties in the area, and do a complete CMA- Comparable Market Analysis. By adjusting the prices of recently sold homes, a good analysis shows what a potential buyer will pay for your property, when compared to the properties sold. Although slightly subjective, a good realtor with a long standing of selling properties (not just listing them) is able to price correctly, to avoid several price reductions. Keep in mind, most properties now go through at least 1-2 priced amendments before selling- this is due to OVERPRICING! Last before least, after the CMA is done, do the MATH! Sit down with your realtor and calculate what amount you will be left with after all is said and done. You should look at this in a realistic way, depending on how long you have owned the property and enjoyed living there! 2Preparing Once you decide to sell, your home becomes a product, like any market

it needs to be competitive. If you can afford the time, and effort a huge clean-up is needed, from windows, walls, floors and everything in between. Next you need to consider if there are any major or minor repairs the property is in need of. If your property is a fixer upper, then consider selling it “as is” at a competitive price. The preparation stage should take up quite a bit of time and effort, which will pay off. We had a property that took 30 days to prepare, and only 1 week into the listing, we had 3 visits per day

such a way that appeals the most to families – rooms and basements should be kid friendly, assets such as a large finished basement, backyard and extra storage spaces need to be showcased. As a condo seller, your condo needs to compete with the new modern construction condos being sold- sleek, clean and modern without too much fuss. As part of promoting your property make sure there are incentives and added value provided by you the sellers or your realtor such as notary fees included with condo purchase, high end appliand an offer accepted that all buyers watch ances included, and flexiafter the first week! Canada 1937 Issue of Paper Money By Michael Joffre mtltimes.ca

n 1937 when King George VI became King of England, and the British Empire, it was decided that a new issue of Canadian paper money be created. It was only 2 years before, in 1935 that a whole series of notes were created by the Bank of Canada, and now these were to be retired (resulting in many scarce notes). The 1937 issue is special, and groundbreaking in many ways. Firstly, it was the first bilingual notes. The previous series had separate English and French notes...which proved expensive to produce, and obviously made little sense. Secondly, beforehand the lower denomination notes all had different members of the monarchy on them, and this was the first time

that the king appeared on more than one note of a series. Usually other family members would be on different bills. Also, a new numbering system was devised where a 2 letter prefix, written as a fraction was put before the serial number. The lower letter was for the denomination, the upper for the series. This was also the first time all notes had different numbers, before notes printed on the same sheet had the same number, and a check letter showing the position on the sheet. $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 (issued with George VI portrait), $100 (Sir John A. Macdonald), and $1,000 (Sir Wilfrid Laurier) notes are part of this series. Most notes were released on July 21, 1937, but the $1,000 was not needed until 1952, and therefore few actually circulated since a

new issue was again created in 1954 with Queen Elizabeth II. The backs of the bills are stunning allegorical vignettes copied from the 1935 series. (see picture) Despite the series continuing until 1954, all notes issued have the 1937 date on them, and it

The Montreal Times is proud to introduce our new weekly edition

is safe to say most surviving examples are actually ones that were printed in the early 1950’s. Fortunately collectors have an easy way to tell the earliest notes from the latter ones. Since all notes are signed on the bottom by the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, and these positions changed a few times during this period we can use this as a guide to when they were printed. The first part of the series issued July 1937 to November 1938 are signed on the left by JAC Osborne...in general

www.mtltimes.ca

these are quite scarce and highly sought after by collectors, as few were saved, and very few are known in new condition. Next, again signed on the left; Donald Gordon, November 1938 to January 1950..most of the circulating life of this series an signed by Gordon so these are in general quite easy to find. Lastly notes signed on the left by James E. Coyne were issued from January 1950 until this series was replaced with the Elizabeth II notes in 1954. It is common for collectors to only save notes when they know a series is

ending, and this is why notes signed JE Coyne from the 1937 series are plentiful.
