Bialik students learn the taste of Quebec dishes

ialik students recently participated in a new hands-on program that gave them deeper insight into Quebecois cooking. As part of the school's 'Semaine de la culture Québécoise', the new 'Dégustation de recettes Québécoises' project had Secondary I and II students researching traditional Quebecois specialty dishes. They learned about the history of the dishes, how to adapt them to a kosher kitchen, measure out the various ingredients, and create both a video and a poster that explained the ingredients, the history and the making of their dish. The finished products were proudly served up to their teachers and fellow students at a special food fair. According to Lysie-Anne Desrochers, Coordinatrice du département de francais, "What Bialik Secondary II students, (L-R) Avi Korman, made this particular program so popular and Charles Presser, Evan Schachter, and Jesse memorable was that our students learned a lot about Quebec culture while having fun. After celebrating London and Paris in previous years, this year’s event theme stayed closer to home to recognize “Our Montreal” and its 375th anniversary. Leaving no doubt about the theme was guest of honour Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and a stirring performance at the start of the evening by 25 members of the worldrenowned Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir, founded by Dr. Trevor W. Payne, C.M. There was also a surprise performance from Montreal’s “Queen of the Blues,” Dawn Tyler Watson, recent winner of the 2017 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. The Annual Valentine’s Ball for the Residence pre-dates its opening by several years as a means to raise funds for its initial construction. The first gala event was held in 2000 with the Residence opening in the fall of 2002, the 15th 6
anniversary of which is being celebrated this year. The Ball has continued to be the organization’s largest annual fundraising event. Masterfully handling the host duties again this year were media commentator and former member of the National Assembly Yolande James and Jamie Orchard, Senior Anchor of Global Montreal’s Evening News. “I am humbled every year by the out-pouring of support for the Residence that we see at the Valentine’s Ball and the generosity of the community throughout the year. This support is absolutely vital in allowing us to continue to serve the community with quality palliative care,” said Teresa Dellar, Executive Director and CoFounder of the Residence. “As we mark the 15th anniversary of our opening this year, we remember we are only able to do so thanks to the ongoing support of our community.” “We can only achieve success with the Valentine’s Ball thanks to the efforts and generosity of many individuals and companies, as well as our numerous volunteers.” said Kerri Elkas, Head of Corporate Affairs, Pfizer Canada Inc., and cochair with Lily Kieliszczyk Mancini, Accounting, Broccolini Construction of the team of dedicated volunteers on the Ball organizing committee. “They all deserve a very big thank-you for making the evening such a success.”

How to sell high: Avoid these three mistakes when selling your home
WEDNESDAY
February 15, 2017
MONTREAL - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they're even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home's "first impression", and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it's imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a home seller as pricing too low.
Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it's own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled "Home sellers: How to Get the Price You Want( and Need)".This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. Nightlife For the late-nighters, W Montreal offers a nightlife experience unlike any other without even leaving the property. For starters, their Wunderbar is a multi-level cocktail lounge that draws from the local culture. Bartini is a little bar located in the middle of W Montreal that keeps the party going until 3am Thursdays through Saturdays. The Plateau Lounge Montreal is set up living-room style for guests to enjoy all the amenities of home, without having to mix their own drinks. Green Guests A little-known fact about W Montreal is that the hotel strives for green choices for themselves and their guests. As a Starwood hotel, for each day a guest turns down housekeeping, they receive 500 Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints. Starpoints can be redeemed for future stays at all Starwood hotels.
Other steps W Montreal has taken to attaining green operations are energy efficient lighting and power, regular maintenance and tune-ups to appliances, the donation of old linens and supplies to local non-profit organizations, as well as paperless check-ins and elimination of paper directories. Even the onsite restaurant strives for sustainability by serving 40 percent local and organic produce, a selection of organic and biodynamic wines, and menus that are based on seasonal availability that also eliminate threatened species. All of these strategies mean that guests have another reason to feel good about their stay! Anytime, dedicated service and exceptional comfort, all in a fantastic location within the city. ith the weather starting to add a bit of a chill in the air, and the sun starting to set earlier, these are sure signs that winter is making its slow but steady arrival. And whether you are a Canadian snowbird or someone who would like a brief break from the cold and snow of a Canadian winter, the Sunshine State itself, Florida, is making its clarion call to those Canadian tourists who are craving that winter escape. And there are many Canadians who are heeding that call. In fact, they are doing it in droves. Last year, out of the 106.6 million international visitors who made Florida their vacation destination, about 3.8 million of them were from Canada, helping to contribute towards a massive tourism industry in Florida that is worth over $89 billion. And there are many obvious reasons why they flock to Florida every year; there are the many sites and attractions, the easygoing way of life, the different regions and areas that have their own unique imprint, and of course, the multitude of sandy beaches, blue oceans, and plenty of warmth and sunshine. Last month, the Florida visitors bureau – Visit Florida – hosted a special “Flock to Florida” breakfast at the W Hotel in downtown Montreal, where representatives from seven Florida regions told a group of local travel writers what the Sunshine State has to offer Canadian visitors this winter, as they make their annual winter migration south.
