The ceremony started with the announcement of two mentions given by the organizers; both were given to the firm Pirotecnia Spa representing Chile: one for its environmental concern, the other for the best soundtrack. The Silver Jupiter (second prize) went to Sweden, represented by the pyrotechnic company Gรถteborgs FyrverkeriFabrik AB that presented the show "Let's celebrate the wonders of life: love, friendship, happiness, music and dance." The firm Ricasa representing Spain took the Gold Jupiter (first prize) for a spectacular, technically impeccable show called "Cinemagia: A declaration of love... to life, cinema, and outstanding movie scores." The soundtrack included music from movies such as "The Mask of Zorro", "The Godfather", "Avatar" and "Transformers" among others. The final night ended with a spectacular pyromusical tribute to Elton John designed by Melrose Pyrotechnics featuring a display of colours and shapes in the sky which were in perfect synchronization with some of Elton John's most emblematic themes such as Rocket Man, Honky Cat, and Tiny Dancer, among many others. The fireworks competition is over, no more nights of colour and light in the sky, accompanied by great music until next year that is.

The effect is quite impressive, aren't those eyes looking at you from the sky? A picture of the winning Spanish show

After Drisdelle saw Shakespeare in the Park (Repercussion Theatre) a few weeks back, it kind of sparked another interest. “I would also like to have a better understanding of Shakespeare and the classics. WEDNESDAY ILE SONIQ By Arturo Las Pinas Jr mtltimes.ca

our parents grew up with anything from Sinatra to Rock to Disco (how old are they?!) And these songs all had words to sing to, at least most of them. Fast track (literally) to today at 160 bpm (beats per minute for the uninitiated), no instruments, no band. Instead you have a laptop and a mixing board. This is what is used to produce (not sing) what is known as Electronic Dance Music or EDM. Previous generations were familiar with Woodstock or Lollapalooza. The generation Z’ers (birth years ranging from the late 1990s through the 2010s) have found a new type of festival scene. Currently mainstream music is seeing a shift and acceptance towards the EDM culture, with festivals such as Tomorrowland in Belgium or Ultra Music Fest (centralized in Miami with spinoff venues in many other cities). Even though the EDM scene in the US seems to have already popped (there will not be the short lived TomorrowWorld this year), Ile Soniq continues it’s steady march to attracting great talent.

I caught up with Pierce Fulton, 23, an American DJ with his single Runaway that reached the number 1 spot on the American Billboard's Emerging Artists chart. In a beach lounge chair, we spoke about his experiences on the EDM scene so far. “We’re in nature, surrounded by trees next to a major city. It’s a nice escape!… I would love to hit a lot more of the genre blending festivals, where I can adapt my style to others.” Ile Soniq was held this past weekend at Parc Jean Drapeau and was held for the third year. www.mtltimes.ca
