etting your gear stolen and van broken into at that last rehearsal space you rented was probably not a pleasant experience, but finding a great practice space for your band is difficult, especially if you are just starting out, and your budget is slim. You have probably already tried the free basement or garage - until your folks told you in no uncertain terms to stop and the friendly neighbor whose dogs you used to housesit called the police. Some popular options are to ask for free, or really cheap space at churches, schools or community centers where they don’t occupy their rooms all the time. Commercial building owners, or storage space owners, have been known to slap up partitions in empty buildings and rent it out as “practice space”, but don’t be too surprised if the experiment comes to a premature end due to a violation of city zoning regulations. Simple logistics matter. Most bands go through membership changes. Quality players won’t always live right next door, so try to make the venue as accessible as possible for everyone. Is the area dodgy? Is it climate controlled so you can play throughout the year? One electrical outlet won’t do the trick, and there must be enough room to replicate a live setup for the band to avoid a volume war during rehearsal.

In the long run, paying a little more to rent a semi- or fully equipped space is a commitment and will probably force you to focus your attention on the job at hand. Rehearsal studios are fun places to be. The buzz is inspiring, and sharing a zone with other creative spirits is stimulating. There are two main options to consider: Pay by the hour: Look for semi-professional studios or practice rooms that have a PA and assorted gear hanging around. It saves wear and tear on your precious instruments. Remember that you are on the clock from the minute you set your acoustic guitar down. Plan your session before you go. Some studios offer lessons and other services with membership schemes for discounts and special offers. You can expect to pay from $10 to $20 per hour, even if the studio requires you to book a minimum of two hours. Monthly rental: You can leave your gear there and have a place you can call a home base. You save a lot of hard work lugging your

WEDNESDAY

amps around, but you also save on knocks and accidental damages to your instruments and equipment. Look for a decent size room in a rehearsal complex or if the location isn’t a big deal but the price is, explore beyond the borders of the city for a suitable space. Budget for around $400 to $600 per month for a wellequipped studio space, less if you can make do with a knock-up on the city outskirts but remember to figure in your transport costs. Rehearsal rooms – even in purpose-built rehearsal complexes – are not recording studios and are usually semi-sound proofed. Be realistic - you may hear your neighbor when you stop playing, but good studios compensate for this and should provide great sound even when all the rooms are occupied. Well-run complexes have basic rules and guidelines that protect the interests of everyone in the building. We looked at some of the studio spaces in Montreal.

Solo Drum in Rue Hutchison has eleven fully equipped rehearsal spaces and its own recording studio. They also offer music lessons. Typical equipment includes a full drum set, a laptop and software for drummers to experiment with, audio recorder and they even rock a webcam to video yourself! Free WiFi and online booking. Great for drummers. www.solodrum.com

Studio-365 is also centrally located and offers three rooms on a paid-bythe-hour basis (a two-hour minimum). Standard equipment is a full drum set, one bass and two guitar amplifiers; two microphones. mic stands; one mixer and two speakers. They offer 25% discount Mondays to Fridays between 1 pm and 6 pm for musicians rehearsing alone, great for a singer with an acoustic guitar. www.studio-365.ca/home.html

Musicopratik is in the Western part of Montreal. They offer large rehearsal studios with the latest high-end gear. A typical studio would have a drum set, a base and other amps, mixer, microphone with cables and stands, 3 or more powered speakers, music stands and wall mounts for instruments. Their membership option lets you qualify for discounted rates. Monthly rentals are available. Great for bands with a lot of equipment. www.musicopratik.com

More commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that attacks the body’s nerve cells, and is usually fatal within five years. As motor neurons are destroyed, persons with ALS lose their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. They become prisoners within their own bodies. The cause is unknown and there is no effective treatment. The ALS Society of Quebec is a non-profit community organization which provides programs and services to families touched by ALS during all stages of the disease. Promoting, subsidizing, and advancing research on the causes, treatment, and cure of ALS are also integral parts of the mission of the Society, which survives on donations and on proceeds from various fundraising events. he demise of Montreal Fashion Week some time ago and most recently Toronto Fashion Week (second largest in North America), coupled with the closing of brand name stores earlier this year, has made it a great challenge for designers to be relevant, not only in Quebec, but all of Canada. Step in Festival Mode et Design, an annual Montreal festival of exactly that. Showcasing talents from local design schools to world designers, the festival works to connect those of the industry and the general public.

Karine Savage, PR and Social Media Manager for Alton Gray, as well as a previous model of the festival produced their runway show. She believes the festival is more relevant now than ever. "It's the only event in Montreal that brings together the people who work in the fashion industry and the public. The festival is free and open to public which makes it even better for the companies who want to target directly their customers and create content."

With models such as Ashley Graham proving to the fashion industry that stick thin is no longer sexy, introduce "The Fashion Hero", a new reality television program set for January 2017. Revealed at the festival, host Brooke Hogan states it's aim is to change the current unrealistic stereotype of acceptable models and advocate the non-use of photoshop in the industry. Caroline Bernier, a native Montrealer, is the creator of both the new show and global movement. Please see more photos@ www.mtltimes.ca

he four-day animation festival—Animaze—came to an end this past Sunday with the awards ceremony and the promise to stage an even greater event next year. Animaze presented this year 170 short and feature films from over 40 countries, comprising all kinds of genres. The final night was devoted to Irish animation. “The Jury, consisting of three time Oscar nominee animator Gerald Potterton, French producer Anne Pages and award-winning animator Luc Chamberland awarded Best Short Film, Best Canadian Student Film and Best International Student Film, adding a special mention to each category, due to an enormous amount of great projects submitted and screened at this year's program,” reported the organizers.

The winning films were "Neka" Nemnemiss Vollant-Mckenzie, with a Special Mention to "Meringue" by Louise Petut-Truchon in the Canadian Student Film Award category. The prize for International Student Film Award went to "Catch It" by Ciline Moire – France. A Special Mention was given to "Fulfillment" by Rhiannon Evans – UK. Short Film Award: Tea Time by Guillaume Blanchet – France, with a Special Mention to "To Build a Fire" by Fx Goby – France and a 2nd Special Mention to "Yul et le Serpent" by Gabriel Harel – France. TV Film Award: "Tu Mourras Moins Bëte" by Amandine Fredon – France, with a Special Mention to "Counterfeit Cat" by Ben Marsaud – Canada-France. Animaze presented a varied sample of what is being done in animation in many different countries, a good way for Montrealers to get acquainted with this type of films www.mtltimes.ca

made outside North America. And there were many to choose: from the dark "Aurelia" by Greece's Christos Bourantas and Kreon Krionas, and the Eastern Europeans "Transparency" (Daniel Šuljić) and "Before Love" (Igor Kovalyov) to the more amusing like "The Walker" (Heather Collins) and some more thought-provoking such as "Yul and the Snake" (Gabriel Harel), and my favourite for its absurdity, "Klementhro" by Ben Mitchell. All in all, Laurie Gordon, Animaze Festival director and her team could be satisfied with the results of this edition of the animation fest. It certainly delivered a high quality, diverse sample of movies made by drawing or by using inanimate objects that in the end provide animation. One of the oldest and more magical motion techniques that were celebrated at this unique festival.
