he 33rd edition of the International de Montgolfieres de Saint-Jean-Sur_Richelieu took place from August 13th to 21st and what a time it was. Heavy rain had delayed our festival experience by almost a full week, and the construction along the way extended the drive to nearly three hours. Along the way, I felt a sense of excitement and tremendous fear as I had never flown in a hot air balloon previously Ăą and have a terrible fear of heights. Once we reached the scheduled flight time, things were still up in the air. Pardon the pun. There was a growing concern that there wasn't enough wind for the balloons to travel and having them remain stagnant in one spot wasn't an option. It was decided that an hour would go by before conditions were checked again and decision could be made. An hour later, little had changed and it was hinted at that there wouldn't be any flights that evening. A small glimmer of hope still shone through the clouds, though, and forty-five minutes later, there was a rouse of action as balloons were prepared for take-off and it seemed we were really going to climb the skies in a wicker basket attached to a balloon. In all, crew and passengers, we were eleven souls gathered in a basket, climbing towards the heavens at a surprisingly rapid click. The people below us cheered and grew smaller and smaller, cars appeared like ants and soon we were up in the atmosphere. All around us were other balloons and the freshest air imaginable. Perhaps it was the thinning air that created the feeling of euphoria I felt through my entire being, but I feel it was more the experience itself. We were still climbing skyward and just beginning what would become a seventy minute flight.

We peeked at a height of four thousand six hundred feet and reached speeds of nearly thirty kilometers an hour, sailing just over ten kilometers in distance before the pilots began planning our descent. It hadn't occurred to me that we wouldn't be returning to our point of take off for our landing until the moment we began descending towards what looked like a lush forest. The basket sliced through tree tops, bending them with ease as we cleared the brush and drifted towards what appeared to be some sort of crop. A pair of startled deer dashed out of our flight path as we hovered mere inches above what now looked to be a corn field. Knees bent to brace for impact with solid ground, we hit and lifted again. Controlled as we were, this was the most unnerving part of the whole experience. Yet I was still euphoric. The crew and some of the passengers jumped overboard, securing lines to the balloon that was still just high enough to skim the field we had landed in, and in the distance, the headlights of an oncoming vehicle could be seen heading towards us. The van contained more crew members that jumped out and ran towards us, aiding us to a landing where the balwww.mtltimes.ca

loon itself could be brought down and deflated and that is what transpired. With the balloon and basket folded and loaded up, we all boarded the van and headed towards the farmhouse that governed our landing zone. There, we met the owner of the field and all of us formed a circle, where a story was told about the history of ballooning and why the crew, after each flight, cracked a bottle of bubbling champagne to share with all that had flown with them. It was a story tale ending to a dream of a day, and one that I will not soon forget. Still in a state of euphoria, we rode in the van back to the festival grounds where Les Cowboys Fringants were moments away from taking stage. Their rollicking and explosive live show had the crowd in a frenzy. On the other side of the stage, Ferris wheels whirled and fairground rides and attractions basqued in the glow of the neon lights about them. I don't yet know if my fear of heights is a thing of the past. What I do know, is that next years edition of the festival can't come soon enough and I'll be dreaming of this wild and fantastic experience for a long, long time to come. This is something everybody needs to experience in their lifetime. A truly incredible experience.

here is no doubt about it: we have definitely entered a Women Empowerment era, and whether you turn on your TV, browse on the internet and the social media, there is always a woman dominating the scene and telling the truth like it is. Luckily, Carlos Zappien seized the opportunity to contribute to the growth of women empowerment, creating a concept called Fit In Your Dress, to help women of all walks of life to obtain their ideal body and healthy weight through learning to live a healthy lifestyle. “I grew up watching all the women around me trying different diets only to get very unfit, unhealthy and ultimately frustrated. I saw them have kids, go in recovery after surgery, get overworked and tired without the time nor knowledge of how to live healthy”, shared Carlos. Carlos is the president and founder of Westmount Solutions Inc.; a company offering information technology consulting and web development, Trainbright Fitness Inc.; an online Platform to find the best boxing and weights workout, and, Purple Empower Inc., a company focused on empowering women in work, business and fitness, currently focusing on their project: Fitinyourdress.com 17

We first met him at the Montreal School Of Performing Arts BBQ, summer of 2014 playing with his rock band he promoted through CAHZ Productions, a label he created in 2008. He went to Abbey Road Studios in London to work on his album, toured and worked with tremendously talented people in the music industry. Today, he shares his time between writing music, boxing and managing his companies. “I still play and write music almost every day. Otherwise I go crazy. I don’t perform live as much, but we will be getting back in the studio this Fall to start recording our new album”, shared Carlos. Making waves all over Montreal with both his music and business careers, Carlos Zappien was invited on June 19th, 2016, to talk about his new concept Fitinyourdress.com, live on Brunch Latino, a show airing on CISM 89,3fm. During the show, Carlos described to the host, Elkin Polo, his fitness-wellness program to help women of all ages get fit and healthy and of course, help them “fit in their favourite dress”. The website just launched this summer www.mtltimes.ca

and is now rapidly growing in lifestyle content, sharing beauty tips, recipes, inspirational stories of women who got back to work after recovering from disabilities and also advises on how to deal with sexual harassment. “We focus on helping busy women getting fit, reorient their lifestyle, I want this to be an example for my 10 year old daughter”, shared Carlos. But that doesn’t stop there. Carlos also mentioned that he is working with organizations and companies to create scholarship programs for girls to attend University, and, a similar program to help women entrepreneurs jump-start their online business, starting with his daughter. Quite the catch, isn’t he? Well ladies, when you get a chance, go take a look at the website to see what’s new. As for Carlos, he will be appearing on CJAD 800 Solo In The City show with Cheryl Besner September 17 and 24.

Crescent St. Villa Paradizo

- a paradise for electronic music

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

rescent St. will again be vibrating with music: on September 9 and 10 the famous downtown street will be hosting the 3rd edition of the Villa Paradizo festival, an occasion for DJs from various parts of the world to demonstrate their mixing abilities. And indeed a chance for electronic music lovers to dance the night away. Besides, the whole event is free. Well in a strict sense the event is scheduled to start early in the day, on Friday, Sept. 9 the show will begin at 11 a.m. featuring the winner of the DJ contest; at 11:30 Mark & Sylvester will be doing their presentation. Then from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a one-hour show each, on the stage will be Étienne Ozborne, Kayliox, David A, Seibaz, and Bynon. Starting at 7:30 and again, for one hour each, the following DJs will be performing successively: Garmiani, FTampa, and Sander Van Doorn, the whole show ending at 11 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 10 starting at 11 a.m. Darryl Masih, at 12:30 Flight 57, and from 2 p.m. for one hour each, KHAOS, Spaz, Tizi, Muren & Random, and Domeno. The show will continue at 7:30 with one-hour successive performances by Chocolate Puma, Thomas Gold, and Cazzette WEDNESDAY

I had the opportunity of interviewing Domeno, a celebrated Montreal DJ who is this year's spokesperson for the festival. He is described online in these terms: "Some DJs are defined by their musical preference, some are praised for their unique mixing abilities, but what makes DOMENO stand above the rest is the intensity and musical excitement that he supplies for his crowds every night." Montreal Times: Tell us about your involvement in Villa Paradizo and what it means to you. Domeno: I am proud to be the spokesperson for this event, personally for me is a big deal. I also am part of the team of Villa Paradizo, and I find it incredibly precious. It is something superb for Montreal. It has also required a lot of work, to prepare it takes a year, it is a one block party on Crescent, a great celebration of music. MT: How do you think is this event perceived

by the public? D: I think is perceived in a very positive way, it is an event for all ages, for the whole family. Kids under 18 who cannot go to a club and the only occasion they have to enjoy this music is on YouTube, have the opportunity to attend the event, which is totally free, it also starts during the day and finishes at 11 at night. Parents actually praise the event because there are no problems: the whole environment there is very safe too. MT: In seeing the lineup I can see that it is also very international... D: That's right. There are people from all over the world to perform, this year there are DJs from Holland, from Brazil, among other places. MT: What about the presence of women DJs D: An increasing number of women are in this field. The idea that the DJ's world is a "Man's world" is being challenged by women who don't feel intimidated at all for being there; they are fierce women who are taking space in the DJ world. It is something that resembles Woodstock, where it doesn't matter whether you are Black, Latino, or any other background, you might have a place too.
